  • EDIT: New upload with sound fixed • FIXED THE SOUND!!! THE...
Today’s #FirstTimeReaction is The Poet and The Pendulum by #Nightwish from their 2015 Wembley concert. Todays subject matter is of course far more sensitive than previous Nightwish songs that I have reacted to. Below follows some information for those living in Sweden in need of guidance, support and/or help handling mental health issues.
I love this song so very much (and I’ve listened to it at least 20 times before this upload) but it was (and still is) difficult to enjoy it 100% with pure joy due to its subject. But once again Nightwish shows us that when it comes to creating music very few (if indeed any) can beat them at composition and performance - this is an amazing feat and I am truly grateful for the gift that is Tuomas brain capacity when it comes to relate and translate score into music. Glad he found a way through the deepest pit and that we can enjoy his talent even further. It stings in the heart thinking of the possibility of having lost him in 2005, I haven’t heard all the music he has created after that but what I have heard are gems I can’t imagine my life without. So please if you or someone you know are dealing with depression, make sure to get the right help for you/them. Our world should never lose the gift that is you - such a loss can never be repaired or replaced!
    Stay amazing,
    💚✨ ~Stanzi

The reason for Tuomas’ depression was not the firing of Tarja itself, it was what came after that. The fans idolized Tarja and they could not accept the fact that she got fired. In their heads Tarja was the one that made the band famous and they became really angry and hostile, especially towards Tuomas. They really took it out on him. They called him all kinds of ugly things and a lot of them expressed that they did not care if he would die. These are the things that brought him into depression and these are the things that echo through the lyrics.

Yes a lot of distortion. Almost unlistenable unfortunately.
      Second half was fine though:-)
Tuomas won't perform this live anymore so I'll never get to see it live, sadly. Just pure Tuomas brilliance.
I don't know many people can listen to this without some tears.

I'm so grateful they decided to put TPATP on the Wembley setlist. This is certainly one of the highlights of the great concert. It's a beautiful song, in a haunting, depressive way.
And yes, you are correct. Marco and Emppu went to Tuomas several times during the song. Floor has also been checking how he is at times. It says a lot about the band when they are tight like this.
The Pacific part with Floor's boy soprano like voice is so stunningly chilling. I have a hard time not to tear up every time she gets to the "beneath the rain" and "swaying blade, my lullaby"
And these blade-like sharp strings sounds at the beginning of Dark Passion Play are something else.

My understanding of the "Shoulder cries more" is that Thuomas and Tarja had been friends for a long time, and he had "cried on her shoulder" about things prior, but now things are bad between them and he can't. Because she (his shoulder) is crying more.
P.S. Your reactions are so heartfelt. I look forward to each new one you upload.

That was my initial thought about it too when I first heard it, but it can refer to fans too. I have also thought, that was this "thousand pages of erased text" something Tuomas had already composed to Tarja? It would be so awesome to know the real story behind all these old songs Tuomas have written, because so many of them can refer to his love to Tarja. I still can't say if he really was in love with her, or is it something we "want to" hear.

      Thank you so much! 😊
And that was in the lines of what I thought of with "shoulder cries harder". It can be Tarja, it can be the other band members but it can also be the fans. Either way it's a beautiful way to put it I feel, shows such emotional delicacy for how others are feeling. Not that it's good to swallow your own emotions but that he had the mindfulness to think of them/their feelings during all of this too. 💚

Edit: NEW UPLOAD WITH THE SOUND FIXED: ruclips.net/video/Zgk0-I3si-4/видео.html
Sorry about the sound!!! 😞 I genuinely don't know what happened!? The sound works just fine in my editing program but then when it got posted (I played it after I read so many of you commenting on the bad sound) something has clearly happened!? Can't fix it without deleting the upload so I'll most likely leave it as it is unfortunately! The sound is however restored for the second time playing the song (and my verbal reaction) so click ahead, time 20:00 for the benefit of your ears!

Since no one else has mentioned it, from where the voice says "now I only have 3 minutes and counting" to the place in the song where Tuomas makes the slicing movement across his throat, is exactly 3 minutes. Such is the genius of his compositions - as if we needed any further proof.

A masterpiece to which I don't think much needs to be said or can be said at all, because the emotional and mental world of every listener is different. And for that, this video of yours could hardly have been better. Hats off and warm greetings. ✌🏻

I recommend you listen to "The Poet And the Pendulum demo + lyrics"
Lyrics in the description box. The lyrics are not exactly the same as on the album version, Wembley version.
The section that starts "I'm afraid, so afraid..." is something else on the demo, starting at 6:30 mark. Why do you think Tuomas decided to change that part of the lyrics? To me it is quite obvious - but there is always the possibility I'm wrong. I just went to see an old rare reaction to the demo version, and one commentator thought the same as I. But we could both be wrong.
I wish Tuomas would have stuck to the original text, but I understand why he did not.
    A couple of other changes:
"For years" - "For eleven years" on the demo. (1996-2007)
"Today, in the year of our Lord 2005" - "Today, in the year of our Lord 2007" on the demo.
These two were good, important changes I think.
I believe there is a mistake in the lyrics in the description box: "dislocate" should be "desecrate", I I came to that conclusion - that's how it souds to me - just a moment ago after listening to that part a dozen times.

    Hi Constanza!
Today was the day, yesss! I was waiting for an reaction of "The poet and the pendulum" from you, i enjoy it and it was a great reaction, like always. 😉
I'm also not sure what the text "....the shoulders crys more..." or Tuomas mean, i'd read different things, i think it means he, Tuomas would cry but he cannot because he must be strong for the band, and the fans = the shoulder for me who crys more, because Tarja (had to) left the band. Most fans loved her and they know in this second it would be a hard time for Nightwish to find an other singer. Floor was in 2012 an godpresent for Nightwish, Anette was ok and i don't write bad things about her, but she was no Tarja, and for sure no Floor! I see Nightwish with Tarja 3 times live, last time in 2005 in Germany and it was a great conzert! Last month was cancelled the Nightwish conzert here in Vienna, i hope they catch up it soon!
    Greetings to you! Ceep care!

I think is that "spoiler" aspect happening. There are people who enjoy spoilers and other that don't (I personally don't - hence me doing first time reactions). But its that thing of the body knows whats to come now and emotions being what they are, they know too and so (for me in this song) it hits harder but the more I listen the more comfort I can find. And tearing up (every time) is part of that comfort too! 😊

Guy Elliott was the boy soprano at the start. He was from St Mary's Reigate Choir School. "Sparkle my scenery....." was originally sung by another boy soprano but Tuomas agreed that Floor could do it..... Quite the rollercoaster! The last part is from a real conversation with Tuomas and his parents...... the past tense of Ghost Love Score "We used to swim...." seems to fit the story, as if Tuomas knew what was coming.....

As is mentioned below the audio quality of the first playthrough was pretty rough but the second was clear and in any respect did not diminish your heartfelt reaction to either one. This was such an important song for Tuomas to write but now it really is an anachronism in that all parties involved have moved on both emotionally and professionally. I believe it will join Master Passion Greed and Bye Bye Beautiful in the 'will never play' category. What gets me every time viewing this is when Emppu goes over to stand by Tuomas at first you can see he nods his head to the crowd and mouths 'Thank you' (when Floor is singing 'thoughts from a severed head') and in the 'Mother Father' section where Tuomas is mouthing the words along himself. Well done Stanzi working through this classic.

Toumas’ trauma was much more than just about the fans’ reaction to him firing her. That totally oversimplifies it. He talks about “for years I’ve been strapped to this alter.” He had a vision for Nightwish built around Tarja and his friends/bandmates, which he often refers to in his lyrics as his “dream.” Here’s a quick key legend to Toumas’ lyrical references at that time:
“Dream” = His vision for Nightwish and a life revolving around Tarja and his Nightwish family
“Child” (when capitalized) = Nightwish (“Infanticide” reference here.)
    “Siren/angel/You” = Tarja
“On the shore/by a fire” = the setting where Toumas conceptualized Nightwish
    “Poet/writer” = Toumas
Toumas originally envisioned an acoustic band, but when they brought his high school friend Tarja in, he hadn’t realized she’d been classically training, and her voice was too big for that, so they built a big sound around her voice. It was the “Child” that the “Siren” brought to Toumas (noted from another song). Additionally he had become emotionally attached to Tarja, which is perfectly reasonable as close friends and bandmates. When she met her future husband it changed their relationship significantly, and her new man became her manager of sorts and drove a wedge between her and the band. He saw Nightwish as a unit and a family, but she saw it as her job and music project. It was a toxic mix, and it turned his dream into a nightmare. He was watching his “Child” be torn apart. He had written many songs specifically for her voice, but it wasn’t going to work with her anymore, so they had to fire her. Thus “1000 pages of erased text.”
Then the fans attacked him, and even some friends. Others sided with him. But the collective trauma of seeing his dream wrecked, heart crushed, angry fans, etc, put him in a deep depression. It really goes much deeper even, but from the deepest hurts come the most beautiful expressions of art. I’m thankful he expressed it through music and enhanced our world.

Sound is over-modulated causing some severe distortion, especially in the bass range. So I'm just going to turn the music and sound down (sad face) and watch your reaction -- that is why I'm here after all. 🤘🕊🤘
edit: the sound distortion was not there in the second video -- much more pleasant experience. Lovely reaction, Constanza. 🕊
P.S. Tuomas is no longer that person (his own words) so it's okay to 'enjoy' the full experience of this musical masterpiece, both the ups and the downs.

As you said we all interpret things differently given everyone has their own experiences but I've always taken the line "I cannot cry for the shoulder cries more" as the feeling to always stay strong for the sake of others no matter how much you feel yourself completely coming apart on the inside.

Thank you for sharing your (as always) wonderful reaction to this. It definitely is a special song, a difficult subject, and you spoke on it with great sensibility, thank you for that as well. I think as others have said in the comments, it is certainly a song that becomes quite therapeutic. The lyrics will always mean something different to everyone, and touch us differently, but I've found myself often breathing easier after listening to it. "Search for beauty, find your shore" and "You have such oceans within" never fail to make my heart hurt in a very good way, and I am so grateful to Tuomas for writing and composing it, the band for playing it so beautifully, and Floor for delivering these words with so much genuine emotion and love.
Again thank you, take excellent care of yourself, see you next time, and keep being wonderful!

The magic of not only music but of Nightwish! And those lines that you pointed out, I teared up just reading them just now - they just hit, as you put it "make my heart hurt in a very good way" - exactly that!
      Take care and be safe.

Probably the most perfect way to experience this song for the first time. Good knowledge of the background story then letting yourself experience it fully the first time through, taking it all in from start to finish as it was meant to be. After that, go back through and watch it again with the lyrics turned on to digest the true depth of the song.
Song? Score? Experience? Masterpiece? Yes, on all fronts.
the audio on the first didn't bother me, just turn down the sound a bit and it was fine. Most of us have watched this video more than a few times, so we forward to our favorite parts to see your reactions to that anyway.

yeah, I liked the way you did it and comprehended it. As far as not sure about the emotions well there was a lot and I can only even try to touch the surface of what he/they might have felt. If I got my info right they started in 96 and really didn't become international til 04 with their hit then I guess this happened about 05 I think and as I've been told it revolves around Tarja's new husband stating she doesn't need Nightwish and could be on her own so this all was causing conflict personally and with schedules and so Tuomas had to write the letter. I can't even imagine, they were on the road to success and then the bottom dropped out and he didn't know if they could continue or that was it and as you can see from his future writings he still had a lot of gas in the tank and the car just went over the cliff, wow. And I can see him exorcising his demons by writing and performing, that's what he does, and the emotion well I'm told he instructed the sound man to unplug him so he didn't have to hear it and I think that was Emppu going over and asking if he was ok and I think that's why at the end his mates went over to him, and of course you can see the passion Floor puts in too. Plus to get a better feel you'd have to hear "Master Passion Greed" which they says the lyrics seem to be geared toward Tarja's husband, don't know for sure, but in any case there's feelings cause Tuomas said that song would never be done live cause he's not that guy and I even heard someone said he doesn't think he'll put the Poet in any more lineups, don't know if that's true, but in any case it is a work of art.

Something went wrong with the audio from the 1st video, seems like the music got boosted until it clipped and then the distorted sound was tuned down to a more reasonable volume. Luckily it was the 2nd one which was more crucial for this reaction.
There's like a million and a billion points to latch on in Poet, so I'll limit it to things you specifically mentioned. First was the line "I cannot cry 'cause the shoulder cries more," which is believed amongst the fans to refer to the friendship between Tuomas and Tarja. Normally she might be the shoulder for him, but now it's just not possible.
Then you mentioned the band members gathering up around Tuomas, and that's something they quite likely did on purpose. He talked about playing Poet in an interview and he raised some interesting points in there. The main one being that since Poet and the Pendulum comes from a very different era and mindset we can infer it's extremely possible that Nightwish will never again play this song live. Even the 2015 Wembley performance seen here was somewhat of a surprise pick. Then the most likely way they'd play it anymore could be in some kind of an epilogue concert.
    Tuomas talking about Poet: ruclips.net/video/v65-ErfUyVM/видео.html
You also commented about the lyrics being beautiful in the 5th and final part. Some of those lines are direct quotes from Tuomas' parents which they said to him at the time.

Thank you for your comment (and the link). I'm so interested to start listening to the albums in chronological order too. (Right now the setlists keep me busy enough though.) I feel like the album with The Poet must be an experience knowing what had happened before this album with the band. It's impossible not to have that "spill into" the music in other songs too!
Those lines, don't think I yet have the words to express how they make me feel. But as a whole this song is such a masterpiece I can only feel grateful it by chance crossed my path giving me the opportunity to hear it and make it part of my life.

You should do the other two songs in the trilogy related to the subject matter (Tarja’s firing): Bye Bye Beautiful and Master Passion Greed. Marco’s vocals are fantastic
Did you catch the pendulum trick? There’s a certain point in the song where Tuomas is figuratively dying. The pendulum in the background looks like it’s slicing him. Oh and the 3 minutes passes in real time
Oh by the way, sometimes you don’t have to say anything and many of us will be tell what you’re thinking. Your facial expressions but especially your eyes say it all
    For other bands,
I also recommend Savatage, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Dr. Butcher/Jon Oliva’s Pain, Chris Caffery, Machines of Grace/Circle II Circle, and Archon Angel. Start with Hall of the Mountain Ling
