- The 2021 cinematic adaptation of Mortal Kombat improves in many ways upon the cheesy 1995 version, with gory fatalities true to the video games and much-improved special effects. There's also more attention paid to Mortal Kombat lore, but with that comes some plot holes big enough to roundhouse Goro through.
Why is Liu Kang so bad at his job? What's Sonya even doing at Raiden's Temple, since she doesn't have a dragon mark? Why is Raiden so inconsistent with his "interventions"? And how does this whole "arcana" thing work, really? Here are some plot holes in Mortal Kombat that everyone ignored.

The plot of this movie was a plot hole. They lead with a story that made no sense.

Let's not forget Sonya Blade magically finding her arcana within seconds of killing Kano as well as knowing exactly how to harvest/aim it when killing Mileena.
Liu Kang literally states that he discovered his arcana as soon as he took the marking from the guy selling orphans. Why can't Sonya discover her arcana as soon as she got the marking from Kano?

@@knuckles290 Also, Liu Kang stated that he had trained tirelessly before he took the mark from the orphan seller, then his arcana unlocked right after acquiring the mark.
So if we treat the "arcana unlock" as a sort of "experience points bar", then filling up said EXP bar before acquiring a mark(much like Sonya and her special forces training), then it makes sense for some people to automatically unlock their arcana upon recieving a mark, wheras others got the mark first and still have to fill up that "arcana unlock" EXP bar to get their arcana.

Hanzo's daughter survived the massacre. She continued the bloodline so Cole's parents probably taught him enough to understand.
That or he realized that Scorpion was not trying to kill him too and seemed to want to help him so he just went with it despite not knowing wtf he just said. 🤷🏻♀️

We not gonna talk about how Scorpion is all Japanese, but knows just enough English to say "Get over here!"? He must have learned how to control fire and speak English in Hell.
When the actor that played Scorpion killed his performance the audience got the performances tattoo thus giving us the crappy ability to hear Japanese as English.... I thought this was clear.

Raiden isn't an elder god. He's the thunder god of earthrealm. He becomes an elder god after killing shinok far later in the story. So him saying he can't intervene because he's an elder god is just wrong.
Jax’s Arcana made no sense, like what would have his powers been if his arms weren’t ripped off?
Cybernetic strength enhancers. Takes what you got, quadrouples the muscle capacity.

I wouldn't say that Sonya being there is a plot hole. They allowed her to stay as a courtesy because as the video points out she did what Liu Kang was supposed to do. She had actually contributed more to Earthrealm's efforts than anyone at that point. Raiden included her in the final battle plan because, well, why not? They were short handed and she wanted to help. Lacking the mark/arcana makes you useless in the tournament, but doesn't mean you can't help outside of it.

The first 7 mins of this video I watched before cutting it off can all be explained. Literally not a plot hole from why Shang Tsung changed his tactics, as well as Sonyas whole story. Glad someone sees at least 1 part.
It wasn't even Raiden who send her to fight. He took everyone to that void to not get killed, and leaving Sonya behind would doomed her. When making the strategy, it was Cole who chose who fights who, and gave Kano to Sonya knowing that she already defeated him.
I know 1st graders that could write a more consistent plot, this was sad.

I think the MK movie or even a sequel will not be enough to flesh out the characters and allow us fans to truly enjoy them.....MK should have been made into a SERIES...that way the developers can take their time and expand on the characters giving their back story and everything we need about them....just like in the game....a 2hr movie is not enough...we need it in a series...

What was was with the whole thing of him being all offense & no defense while fighting mma? What was the point of having that in the film at all? It was never mentioned in the movie again, and never used as a learning tool either. It was completely unnecessary.
Everyone was smart enough to tell Sonya she didn’t belong but not stupid enough to try and escort her out.
I wish there was Johnny Cage but at least they hinted at him at the end so there will probably be a sequel that he would be in.

I was pretty stupid that Sonya instantly unlocks her arkana. She kills Kano, instantly teleports to help Cole and she already knows how to use it. No unlocking necessary.

Just like the whole “plot” of him being a former cage fighting champion who now sucks for some reason, along with the “plot” of him being all offense and no defense. It’s literally never mentioned in the movie again.
I think the writers didn't even care about Cole because they didn't even bother to establish who his family members were until halfway into the movie.
I love how all the actor at least reassemble the character from the game to a point while Milena is looking like a demon not even dressed close to the characters look
You have to remember Sonya didn’t know the mark was linked to arcana. She only knew that the symbol meant you were chosen. Although she did find someone with powers and the mark. But did not know the link between the two.
While true, she knew that the marked people where chosen for something imporant, and that uppon killing someone with a mark, you get it

If indeed that was Quan-Chi and not Bi-Han killing Hanzo, then not transferring the symbol makes sense. Also, Bi-Han might have had the mark already, since he shows off his powers early.

@@danielkang2283 The mark gives you the potential to learn abilities. I think you can still choose sides. Other than Sub-Zero, another example would be Kabal, who should be from Earthrealm. He should have a mark which gave him his speed and he chose to ally with Shang Tsung.
@@danielkang2283 Yea, you are absolutely right. I think Hanzo being a champion for earth in previous tournaments could be explore in a spin-off. There is a lot good material there that the video games haven't explained yet, I think. I think the last game I played was MK4. So I am not sure if the games have touched on any of the previous 9 tourneys.
This movie almost broke Kano's back for carrying it the entire viewing time. Not to mention the bad acting of Liu Kang and Sonya Blade.

Raiden had the foresight to grab Hanzo’s blade. So it would make sense for him to keep Sonya around without her mark because he knew she would kill Kano and get the mark.

Kano was trained because he had the mark, which is the plot point to Sonya NOT being trained and Mileena pointing out that she’s basically unworthy of being killed because it doesn’t further their plan. You literally explained it in back to back segments.
All the deaths in MK1 will be voided by the elder gods. Kano and Sonya will be held captive together like in the games since they are using the same Mark between the both of theM

There’s actually deleted scenes that help the story like the one with Sonya. Raiden knows Sonya will be chosen, he says it to Kang and Lao.
When Raiden says Elder Gods, he is referring to being at a higher divinity than he is. He is not an Elder God, just a God.
I never thought about this Sonya thing. Raiden even sends Cole home and he has the mark😂. But Sonya doesn’t and she gets to stick around.
Later Raiden claims that he knew being with his family would give Cole enough motivation to activate his.

2:02 it's because there is a prophecy that says a descendant from Hanzo's bloodline will lead the warriors. They almost did not believe that prophecy and thus kind of ignored it. Especially when they thought all this time that Hanzo's bloodline already ended.

The next time is when Reiko beats him with the hammer on his metal arms. Final straw is Sonya Blade nearly dying and he finally discovers his arcana

The arcana in most cases, is more like on X-Men when young mutants get their powers triggered by stress or rage.
Basically the way its explained & shown unlocking your arcana is the same process as going Super Saiyan for the first time 🤔😂💯

The plot holes in MK, remind me of when Ben Affleck asked Michael Bay on the set of “Armageddon”, why it would be easier to train oil drillers to become astronauts, rather than train Astronauts to become drillers, and Bay told Affleck to “Shut the f**k up.”
I’m sure that was a common quote flying out around the writer’s room for MK, when anyone asked about gaping plot holes.
I think the reason Raiden let Sonya stay is that he knew she could defeat Kano if the need comes

It's a plot hole that Mileena didn't kill Sonya:
1) Liu Kang had emphasized that enemy fighters were brutal and do not show mercy, so Mileena should just kill whoever she fights. All the baddies should.
2) Mileena is cloned with cannibal DNA, and is shown licking the blood as if she embraces that lifestyle. She should have not only killed Sonya, but probably bitten a chunk out of her for the satisfaction of it.
3) The blood shouldn't matter. It tastes different if you have the mark? Are Earth fighters Jedis now? With midichlorians?
