This video reminds me of when I went to a bar and they said they didn't have Jameson but, the bartender said they had proper twelve and that it was practically the same whiskey, I naively listened...as soon as I took a sip, I instantly threw it away and pulled an irish goodbye on my friends as the horribleness in my mouth had completely ended my night.

He normally can handle drinking his whiskey neat but he had to use a chaser to get down the proper twelve because it was so lackluster. Let's just say, jameson's is the repeat we buy for keeping around for special times and proper twelve took awhile to get through. I refused to help him finish the bottle off. I bought it for him and told him he could finish it himself 😂 took quiet a few months but it's gone and will never spend a dime on it again

Had this a few weeks ago. Had no idea who's brand it was, had no impression before getting it in a glass myself it was maybe not the best. And I'm hardly the most exposed to whisk[e]y of any kinds myself. Still pretty quickly found it a little bitter, and mostly the word that came to mind was "thin". There wasn't a lot there in the first place, and then what was there I mostly didn't like. And the most I've ever spent on a bottle myself was $55 CAD (around $40-45 USD) for stuff like Monkey Shoulder or Buffalo Trace. Both of which I quite like.

Here in California it's only about $17 a bottle and I haven't done a side-by-side but to my recollection it tastes a lot like Jameson and I finished my bottle without any ice. It is very young tasting, I'm curious what it would taste like with a few more years behind it.
P.S. as of right now some of my favorite whiskeys are Hibiki 17, Pendleton, Few Rye, Toki, Woodford reserves double oaked, Gentleman Jack, Buffalo Trace and Ohishi 8 year old sherry cast.

You have probably all ready reviewed and talked about Auchentoshan but worth mentioning again for the Irish/Scottish question. Auchentoshan is a low land single malt that is triple distilled and probably shares more characteristics with it's Irish cousins than it's Scottish brother. Agree or disagree?

How did they get the starches converted to fermentable sugars without using malted barley/rye in the mash bill? They didn’t have enzymes in Ireland or Scotland back in the 1700’s other then what was present in what ever malted grains they had available. No?

Thanks to your reviews I picked them up and I gotta say I liked them more than I thought I would, never drank bourbon before outside of JD or Jim Beam. Not gonna knock some of the Jura's or Glengoyne's off their pedestals but still a decent addition to the collection

I choose Wild Turkey 101 over A LOT of pricier bourbons. Blantons, Angels Envy, Eagle Rare (which isnt more expensive just harder to find)... i like the 101 better

Cool man! For me it was Jameson Black Barrell. I can't stand proper twelve, still OK with Black barrell though...
We all need an entrypoint, it's hard reeling people in with peated cask strength single malts. So a more affordable, well marketed, accessable, low ABV whisk(e)y is perfect for that.

Humble flex here, you can see what my last name is - my first whiskey purchase was Old Rip Van Winkle 10 year which I bought in 2003. I think I spent $50 which felt extravagant but the bottle was really cool looking and it had my last name as well as my great grandfathers nickname on it - "RIP". I still have the bottle which is the "squat" bottle, apparently it has sold on ebay for $300.

I actually did a neat pour of it, at a bar, for a lark and to see what the deal was, and I found it pretty enjoyable. Super simple and a little mettalic, certainly not something I'd buy a bottle of, but not worth the hate I keep seeing it get. I would drink it if someone offered it.

Bought a bottle for my buddy who raved about it when it first came out. So after that I bought 1 also ($40.00 at the time in P.A.) Honestly, this whiskey was marketed to me and really brought me in to drinking straight whiskey no chasers on the rocks.
It’s a tad sweeter than Jameson but I’m no whiskey nerd. This one helped me up my ability to drink my whiskey straight just like theses guys said.
Ironically I did like bush mills straight but liked proper 12 better. Of course I now lean toward blended whiskeys as I’m still learning what I like.

There's very few instances in which i'd turn down any whiskey or steak unless it had some crazy artificial flavors added or something equivalent to that. Of course, I would never willingly choose or buy such things.
