I’m glad someone made a video of this liking. I’ve always explained the grid system to my clients when guiding, essentially breaking down the river to a grid system laying out a vision of graph paper for the river and adding the second and third dimension as the angler and the moving water, it always helps people understand the visualization of fly fishing.
Cool comment. That's interesting to me, because when I've heard people talk about a grid system, I always heard it as how they covered water -- as a method to be sure to cover everything. I said in an earlier video that I'm not a grid guy. And in that way, I'm not, but I guess in the way you describe, I am! Cheers.

Wow what a video! This explains so much! I listen to all your podcasts while working but for me it really takes a video to fully understand it. I was trying to fish way to far away from me! I had nearly my whole mono rig out of the rod, I couldn't cast it either! That's why I went back to my euro line. I really feel stupid that I didn't understand it from all the podcasts that I've listened to. Thanks so much for sharing

Good stuff. And for a really deadly rig, sometimes put the indy below your sighter, especially a Dorsey Yarn Indicator. Love it.
@@Troutbitten I’ll have to give that a try, currently using your amnesia alternative, suffix neon fire, and stren hi vis gold for my sighter. The stren gets hard to see in certain conditions so the yarn should definitely help! The neon fire is super visible to me, great recommendation.

This is a great illustration. Why the golden ratio exists needs to be more emphasized. It was mentioned at the beginning as the way to keep the fly in the lane. But it may need to be heard over and over again. Many anglers think microleaders are distant tightlining tools. But if you go more than one rod length on your side, the geometry dictates that you are swinging not tracking. It is okay to swing the fly but if you are going to swing it, there are better methods of doing it than in-the-air tightlining. If you will do 45 to 45, get a regular line with a sink tip and swing any point in your 60ft radius.
Tightlining achieves close proximity deep contact that is not possible any other way with a fly rod.
Regardless of the leader build, any tight line tracks to the rod tip, no matter how much we try to keep the tension off it. I do find anglers using micro mono rigs that don't see this, but it's true. Every fisherman from every discipline must deal with it. Line tracks to the rod tip, even if it's the thinnest line possible.
I wouldn't call that effect swinging. We'd most often call it a cross lead. But once it gets past the angler and the tension is coming from upstream, then that tension converts to a swing.

@@self-taught_angler That's cool. But for fishing, we don't call it a swing until the tension is against the current. Doesn't matter what it's called, really, until the terms come up in conversation and get confusing. Here's an article about the difference, as I see it.

@@Troutbitten I am agreeing with you. I understand that there exists a difference between the fishing nomenclature and the daily usage. (most likely initially they were the same and the fishing one changed) Irrelevant to that difference in the nomenclature, the circular motion is there. You illustrate this in your clip when you show with a yellow circle on the water how the fly is coming towards you.

I have definitely caught fish on the downstream end of my drift. They are hard to hookset on when they bite right on the end but that is a fly first presentation when it gets downstream of your position and can work for spooky fish
Right on. No doubt. The Golden Ratio is a baseline from where deviations begin. It provides the chance for the purest drifts and a chance to use the tight line advantage to it's fullest. And then we fish other angles too, on purpose, for different reasons.

Awesome video. I’m glad that you made a video like this. I kind of do the same thing and explain it a little different to my clients but this will be my go to from now on. One other thing i always tell my clients is, if you let the flies drift by you, you might not get a great hook set, you may even be pulling your fly right out of that trouts mouth.

Right on. Doesn't matter who, what or where. This Golden Ratio doesn't change. I think that's the cool thing. And when I choose to go outside of it, I do it intentionally, knowing the consequences.

Awesome video. Thank you so much for everything you do for us with your articals, podcasts and videos. I find this latest video answers lots of questions I didnt know I had. One more question to add to my previous question, when fishing the golden ratio, how close do you think you can get to the fish without spooking them. I kind of think that being within 10 feet of a fish might spook it.
Cheers. That's all really, really conditional. But if you approach from behind a trout in fast water, and stay low, they have no idea you are there. I envy you the extremely wadeable water to get close. Much of mine is more challenging in the winter or by tradition not waded. Regardless, this highlighted the fact that I should be casting closer. Thanks for directly addressing my wondering about the amount of “lane drift” I have experienced because of trying to fish too far across the river.
Right on. I also fish some pretty damn big water. And when I do, I find myself casting outside of that Golden Ratio because I can't wade everything. On my better days, I rein myself in and fish only what I can wade to and fish well, or I choose an indicator system (usually the Dorsey Yarn Indy) and fish outside of that Golden Ratio idea.

Question for you about how you enter the water at the beginning of the video. Is this the normal way to enter the water when you fish rivers or streams? Is entering the river this rambunctiously likely to spook the fish? I am new to tight line nymphing and am wondering how unsplashy we need to be when wading so we dont spook fish. This might be a good video subject for you as well. Thank you for taking time to read my question and I hope you have the time to answer.
Thanks. That's a fair question and a good point. My quick answer is absolutely not. Truth is, I wasn't thinking about catching fish at all there. We were up and down that stretch of water trying to stay out of the sunlight during that shoot (for filming).The water was also dirty, so less caution is necessary. Hey Dom, great tutorial! How often do you spook trout with this? From my experience a lot of central PA trout (especially on some of the big named waters) are accustomed to anglers and let you get pretty close to them. Have you found this approach as successful other places with different fish (perhaps fish who aren’t as accustomed to anglers)? Moreso, have you found that fish act or feed differently if they know youre there? Cheers!
Doesn't matter where you are, trout can't see behind them. I use this Golden Ratio distance everywhere. That said, I don't like nymphing flat water, but even in clear and low stuff, you can get within a rod's reach of trout without them seeing you, if you are working upstream. We do this all the time. Other things will scare trout, but they cannot see you from that angle.
Respectfully, I completely disagree with your assessment of the trout here. If you caught a wild trout in this area, it did not know you were there. They do NOT get used to anglers and just feed anyway. Only chance of that would be if you were on Spruce Creek, which is not a wild situation, with those stocked and fed hatchery fish. (We don't fish there, and I wouldn't recommend it.)

I use that Fishpond Thunderhead for my camera only. It's a perfect solution for that. I love it. I wouldn't like it much for fishing out of it, but that's just me.

Do you have any tips for fishing with multiple people? When I go fishing I am usually with one to two friends or family members. Do you have an recommendations for the distance between anglers, time between casting, and if you should be breaking up the stream so everyone can fish different seams? Essential how do you make sure people at different skill levels have every possible chance at catching a fish when fishing in a group? I really appreciate all the time and effort you guys put into Trout Bitten. Its a great resource I try to share with everyone I take fishing.

Ah, nice. That's a cool question. I truly can't put my finger on that one. It's REALLY variable per season, per day or even just the piece of water. It matters, mostly, what kind of drift they are eating most. For us, that's usually a dead drift, but even within that, there are three very different kinds of dead drifts on nymphs. Much lighter more breathable are the carbon? Are the features of the eddys worth the loss of breath ability.
Man, everything is so specialized these days . . .
The Backeddy waders have average breathability, comparable to most waders on the market. They won't make you hot. I never thought much about that for all my years of fishing until recently. The Carbons are nice because of the quick drop down feature, and they are lighter because they lack other things that would make them heavy. Material is a little lighter too. If you were forcing me to pick one, I'd choose the Backeddy, becaue I like a pass through pocket. All the Skwala stuff is top notch.

Right on! It definitely IS harder in big water. I fall into the trap of fishing too far way too often,. Just because the water is bigger, it kinda lures you into doing the wrong things. But the Golden Ratio principles do not change, and if we want those most from the system, we have to work within it. Honestly, if I choose to fish further away, I add in an indicator. It works wonderfully on big water. Cheers.

You can do the same thing, with the Backeddy. Even those the ends don't fit together, male/female, I disconnect both straps and just hold them in my teeth. Front rolls down, take a leak, reconnect. Don't have to take vest or jacket off for that. Easy peasy . . . wait a second . . .
@@Troutbitten I saw a video review of the Backeddy wader where the reviewer connected the suspender “buckles” to each other by placing one flat on top of the other so the magnetic ends held together.
