I lost one of my cats just over a week ago, and now my surviving kitty is an only cat for the first time in his life. He’s been vocal ever since we lost my oldest cat at 21 last summer, but I’d say he’s a little more now. He’s also somewhat clingy but he seems to know how much I am grieving and he’s being close. Thankfully I work from home most of the time and we do play several games daily. When I am ready, I’ll bring two young rescues into our house, and hopefully that will make us both happy.

Thank you so much. I had no idea what to do with my cats.
I have two kittens; a bit and a girl.
I got two so they don't get lonely or bored when I'm at work.
I recently see all of the signs on the boy. He pees on my clothes or my bed (anything that has my scent). He keeps vocalizing all day and in an usual tone like he's not meowing he's shouting. He doesn't destroy furniture anymore.but his sister still does as she always have. And both of them stopped sleeping by my side. The girl used to sleep on my chest when she was very small but she's grown bigger and my chest isn't a comfortable bed anymore lol, but the boy used to Love getting g his belly rubs as he sleeps by my side. He stopped, he's peeing on my clothes and sheets and he doesn't stop shouting.
      What to do?

Don’t run out to adopt a kitten! “Jane” was a happy, 5-year-old cat. She lived with a family with children, and she “dominated” the family’s dog. Her family thought she was lonely (or they just wanted a cute kitten), so they adopted “Alice”. Jane hated Alice. In spite of the family’s efforts to socialize them, nothing worked, so the family decided to keep the cute kitten Alice and dump poor Jane. My retired friend adopted Jane. Jane is so happy living with my friend. Jane greets everyone who visits by testing out their laps. She loves to play and even to chase the occasional real mouse. There are plenty of catless people to adopt kittens. Don’t pretend that your cat is lonely just to get a kitten. [The names of the cats have been changed to protect their identities.]

I adopted a pair of siblings at 8 weeks, and last year one of them sadly passed away at 15. His sister, who had been having issues with night vocalization/hyperthyroidism, howled and paced looking for her brother all night every night for months. I barely slept. I wasn’t completely ready, but I decided to adopt another cat. He’s 2 and has breathed new life into my senior lady. There’s barely been a howl out of her since night one of having the new cat. She’s even gotten more playful than she’s been in years.

My three year old cat is definitely lonely. Since I've raised her from 3 weeks old, she just sleeps a lot, plays with me a little but seems to get bored quickly and she eats. She's overweight. I found 4 week old feral kitten two weeks ago who was quite sick and so needed to be isolated for two weeks. Slow introductions between the two have occurred for the last two days. The kitten is not perturbed by my resident adult cat but the adult seems a bit perplexed. I let her smell the kitten scent on my hands which she does with great interest and then she licks my hands. I hope this is a good sign. Short face to face introduction will start tomorrow. I hope they will get along well.

The local shelter here, Meow Cat Rescue, does not allow people to adopt a single kitten unless there is a specific reason, the kitten doesn't get along with other cats or special needs. When we went there to adopt we thought we were going to get one but we adopted a pair. They are bonded siblings and they always have each other. It makes me feel happy and relieved that if there is a period of a few hours where I can't interact with them they have each other.
If at all possible, adopt two cats, not one. I'm not sure I can watch this entire video, it's going to make me sad.

I recently acquired a baby Ragdoll male, as he started getting around pretty well he tried being friends with our two older cats, but they didn’t want anything to do with him. So I told him that I would find him a friend. I got with a guy at work that rescues cats and told him I was looking for the fuzziest female he could find. A few days went by and he showed up with a fuzzy black female, she is about the same age as my male. It has taken about two weeks to get to know each other and they are little lovers now, they sleep together and run and play. I’m happy that I could do that for him.

This vet has not defined her terms! Like for example HOW much sleep is too much? What exactly is destructive behavior? My cat likes to get my attention by scratching or calling out--how much is destructive behavior--after all much of what she defines as destructive behavior at least borders on normal cat behavior? My boy was traumatized. He was starving when he was picked up for adoption. This is a defining characteristic of his personality now; he can't wait to be fed. And finally, I cannot afford to go to a vet as much as is advised. Routine visits can run about $300! Does this mean I shouldn't have a cat?

My older cat turned very aggressive and anti-social after the other cat we had at the time passed away, she'd constantly go room to room meowing, and nothing we tried seemed to work. Then a few years later, and two more cats, it's almost like she's a new cat. She can still lash out now and then, but most of the time she's become affectionate again and friendlier to visitors. It's even been known for her to join in and play a little too. Grief and loneliness completely changed her personality.

      Hi Denese.
If your cat eat alot drink alot and wee alot ,check the litter you'll see lots of wee as to compare with previously,
That's a sign for hyperthyroidism. My cat 13 years old,the above were signs I saw in my cat.and my vet confirm my suspicion, she was diagnose with hyperthyroidism. The treatments are ear ointments (thyroid medication that just need to apply on ear so can observed easily),oral tablet.both has side effect. Iodine 131 has no side effects but very expensive n need to stay in the hospital for treatment. The above was my vet suggestions.

Little known fact: feeding fish to cats triggers hyperthyroidism! Something to do with chemical content in fish - particularly the parts they put in cat food. If you aren’t sure, stop feeding fish for a few days and watch your cat’s hyperthyroid symptoms (meowing, excessive urination, big pupils) subside, and then feed a little fish to them and the signs immediately return. I wish more people knew this as I had two older cats with hyperthyroidism and I believe it was caused by what I had fed them for so many years. Many vets are not aware of this.

You mentioned cliques so let me tell you a story about cat drama...
My dad currently has four cats, though he's had several more that were either given away or died over the past seven years.
He currently has a male black tuxedo, a female persian-mix, a female white/black mottled short-hair, and a male orange tabby, all have been fixed (spayed/neutered). My dad used to have a male gray tuxedo and a male gray tabby that were not fixed, they died last year of separate illnesses but I mention them now because they are important to the drama that's about to unfold.
Because this may get confusing, I'll describe the cast of characters in this family drama in more detail and provide background info to flesh them out.
The tuxedo male and mottled female are siblings from a litter of five kittens and are about 6 years old, two of their siblings were given away to family members, and one died. they were members of their mother's first litter, who would go on to have a second litter. The persian-mix was born to one of the cats in the mother's second litter, so in other words the persian-mix is a niece to the male black tuxedo and female mottled, and she is about 3 or 4 years old.
The male black tuxedo and female mottled's father disappeared (typical) and their mother died a couple years ago, but in her second litter she had two male kittens and two female kittens and I'll refer to them as the sister-wives. One male disappeared and the other was given away. The sister-wives gave birth to kittens days apart and shared parenting duties with each other, nursing each other's kittens, babysitting, etc., and we lost track of who gave birth to what kittens, but there were seven total.
Two of the seven died young, two kittens were given away along with the sister-wives, and my dad kept three. One of the three disappeared, the other two were the female persian-mix and the male gray tuxedo.
At this point in the story we now have a male black tuxedo and a female white/black mottled that are siblings, and we have their niece a persian-mix and their nephew a gray tuxedo.
The male orange tabby I mentioned in the beginning was not genetically related and belonged to the neighbor but all of their cats hated him so he ran away. The male orange tabby befriended the male gray tuxedo at my dad's house, but all of my dad's other cats hated this new stranger.
Because of this animosity, the orange tabby and gray tuxedo began to spend most of their time together and away from the other three, but the male gray tuxedo would often sneak off alone to visit his blood relatives on the other side of the property. I convinced myself that the male orange tabby and the male gray tuxedo had a major bromance happening and you'll see why in a bit.
The final member of this story is the male gray tabby who was much younger than all the rest and showed up at my dad's house barely old enough to have been weaned.
In a bizarre display, the male gray tuxedo adopted the little male gray tabby kitten right away, and I mean that as literally as possible. Upon hearing the kitten's cries he went running, I feared he was going to kill it because he was always hyper territorial to stray cats, but instead he began to comfort it. He protected it from his female relatives who hated the little crying runt.
The male orange tabby also tolerated the little squacker and it became the third member of their clique or family I guess. The male grey tuxedo showed the little male gray tabby where to eat, allowed the kitten to "nurse" from him, curled up with the kitten at night, played with him, and acted like its mother. I've only seen this behavior from a male cat once before in my life. Here were these three male cats all acting like a family.
In terms of the other three cats who are all related to each other, the two females (the persian-mix and the mottled) tolerate each other most of the time, but the persian struggles with respecting personal space and the mottled has only a small amount of patience for this.
They both love the male black tuxedo and he is the most calm and collected of all of the cats, very friendly and outgoing with people, and tolerant except towards the orange tabby but he doesn’t go looking for trouble. The female persian-mix on the other hand always goes looking for a fight with the male orange tabby, and he in turn will do the same, they absolutely hate each other.
The male orange tabby has always been very clingy, but especially so after the two gray males died last year in rapid succession, one from FIP and the other from a treatment resistant upper-respiratory infection. It seems like he is becoming more antagonistic towards the females, more so than he was when his gray friends were still there, I guess perhaps it is loneliness.
Watching all of this unfold has been like watching a television drama, I mean who needs Game of Thrones when you have the secret lives of cats to observe.

I've only just put my cat on a mild diet because, even though she's an indoor/outdoor cat, it's winter here in Australia and she's inside more often. So, I'd give her a really small bit of kibble I keep only as "treats", seeing as she was close by more often. When she was outside more, the opportunity to give her something didn't present itself so much.
I've always thought cats with a little bit of a "chunky" size are so cute, but I know weight can become a problem that can easily get out of hand quickly. Thanks for the advice 🙏😸

She is a sweet, loving cat, but I'm afraid she is lonely because she came from a home with kids and other pets. I try to get her to play, but she doesn't stay interested for long. I feel so bad when I have to be out of the apartment and leave my radio playing at least. I am retired, but still have a busy life. I've bought wand toys which she likes most but she only plays for a while. She has defecated outside the box since she came here which makes me think that is why the family couldn't keep her. I clean her litter box several times a day. I don't have carpet, only wood floors, and they are easy to clean. I love her so much and want to help her, not give her up. I don't want her to be rejected again. But I hate to see her so sad.

Catify your studio as much as you can to expand her territory as well

I was unsure if he was going to be able to make it as an alone cat, but i knew he would miss me terribly because he mostly just sleeps when I'm not at home. But he has been thriving! Turns out he loves being alone with me! He also seems to apriciate the rest of the cat gang more now when we travel home to them, and he started sleeping next to his brother again (he stopped doing that years ago). So it seems he likes being with the others sometimes, but he LOVES all the attention he gets as a lonely cat.

My cat started urinating outside of the box a few years ago after I had a job change. He was left alone for 9 or 10 hours a day and I discovered he was ocassionally urinating in random areas in the house. The vet ran tests and figured he was stressed. The vet had me start my cat on liquid fluoxetine, but it was difficult to administer without him spitting it out and foaming at the mouth due to the bitterness of the med. We tried him on a low dosage fluoxetine tablet and then a higher dosage capsule that he takes daily. It has seemed to fix the stress problem, but I worry about the long term effects of the fluoxetine. He’s 7 years old and just the sweetest, most playful guy. One would never know he felt stress or loneliness. I thought about adopting another cat for his companionship, but I worry it may make things worse even though he’s very cool around other animals.

I didnt have him from being a kitten, he was a stray that no-one claimed & stayed - thank god, he’s an angel. My mam got a kitten couple years ago & popped by to say hi with her in her carrybox. She was super tiny & friendly….yet my cat as big as he is was shaking & hissing some, so clearly felt threatened. He’s very sweet, gentle & timid by nature & was very outdoorsy but is now a housecat (because of a main road) but has adapted very well & has an outdoor space (balcony) I’m wondering if he’s happy as being the only cat, he’s literally always by my side, or if he would adjust to & like some cat company. I don’t want to bring another cat into his home & upset either of them 🙁

I have three cats, one 13 years old and 5 years old siblings, a girl and the boy. The boy is sometimes bored and indeed, he teases the girls, runs after them and so on. He really goes to the sleeping girl cat and ”hits” her to make her defend and run. Like human boys tease girls. Of course, I stop it and give him attention by starting to play with him, because he is very strong and girls do not like his teasing. I often think that he’d need a football team, other boys to play with him. 😂 But I cannot afford more cats. I also offered to go out with him (in the harness) but he is afraid to step outside the door. He is an inside cat. My younger girl cat is following me everywhere. The oldest girl is also social but more independent. And when I go to sleep, they all come to sleep around me: the oldest on the pillow beside my head, the young girl on my armpit, the boy on my leggs. All are purring loudly, it is a concert. Then, in the morning, the task of the young girl is to wake me up at 5 am. She does it by tapping my cheek gently with her paw. It is the order.
One time I visited my friend who has a dog. I overnighted there with my cats. After all, all three cats and the dog slept with me. The dog came under my cover, only his head was showing. My cats stared at it as thinking: ”What is THAT doing in our bed?” After awhile, they accepted the situation and they all slept in my bed. I could hardly move.
The owner of the dog came at the door and said: I am jealous! 😂 Fortunately, she did not come into my bed, too.

I feel like the same thing is happening with my mother's cat. She was born from a stray. She is now a year. The vets diagnosed her with "Giardia". She had worms and with the proper directions from the vet we were able to get her stomach issues under control. My mother see that her cat is lonely and had considered getting one, but the concern is over the contagion of "Giardia". I know from what I read that over time it can disappear when they get older but introducing a younger cat into the fold could be an issue. Because right now we noticed the cat spending a lot of time sleeping in the closet and then eating. You might have hit on something. My mom went away for a small business trip. When she came back she noticed the cat had put on weight even though it didn't seem like she was eating much. We feed her broth in the morning and she has a small bowl of grain free dry food and water. So I really don't know if her weight gain was due to eating, curling up into a space or because my mom was away. This has been why my mom has been concerned of getting a playmate because she might not be getting the play attention she wants.

I worry about my cat, Rosie, being lonely. She is an indoor cat. She had an identical sister and I adopted them both at 6 weeks. One died of an untreatable cancer aged 18 months. They were really close. That was 2 years ago - and since then Rosie has really become far more sociable to me and very affectionate . It wasn't a worry while I was working from home but now we are back in office, Rosie is super clingy and vocal when I come home. Doesn't leave my side tbh. When I head up to be she comes too, when I wake up she is on my pillow gazing into my eyes as I open them - if I get up late on the weekend she won't go down stairs without me - when I pop to the loo night or day my little furry companion comes too. She's not destructive, 100% reliable in the litter box use and isn't fat but she is super vocal and very clingy but I fear getting another cat to keep her company might make her sad.

Since Sams passing (who was a very clingy cat with me and his sister) now his sister Mia is far more clingy with me, coming to see me faster when I get home. She was trying to play with her brother when he was sick. I don’t want to rush into anything as she is still having signs of grief since the lost just 2 weeks ago. But I don’t know if I should attempt to get a friend in the future…..when I had to take Sam to the vet without Mia she had post separation aggression so I don’t know if she would welcome another cat. But she likes to chase and play with Sam and he loved to snuggle her and she always gave him baths.

The first six weeks she was impossible to deal with - she did not sleep, she paced around and vocalized day and night, lost weight, defecated outside the box, and became EXTREMELY CLINGY. She has been sleeping a lot lately and has been eating better and pooping has stopped, but it's the clingy-ness that is killing me. I work at home and she crawls on me all day and really whines when I tell her 'No!' and try to put her in her bed, which she never stays in. I always feel so bad when I turn her away but I can't spend every minute of the day with her. How should I respond to the clingy-ness? Do I give in to her every time to make her feel better, or does that just encourage the clingy-ness? My cat (7 yr old fixed male) was aggressive toward me when it was just the two of us (I took him with me when I got my own place). I made sure there was plenty of stimulation, and played with him every day. He was so anxious and depressed, his vet put him on anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications (more than I’ve been taking!). That still didn’t help.
I decided to leave him with the “non-custodial parent” as my former roommate/partner calls himself, because he seemed happier at the house than my apartment. It seems, however, I’m the only one who plays with him when I visit several times a week. He’s still very aggressive toward (only) me. I think he’s depressed. My friend thinks I’m anthropomorphizing him. For his own well-being, I’ve been (unsuccessfully) trying to rehome him for about a year now. We adopted him for my teen stepson when he was five months old. The kid feeds him, but otherwise ignores the poor cat. His dad tends to smother the cat, even when he’s giving all the telltale signs to leave him alone. But it’s me he attacks. I’m at a loss.

So um… I don’t know if I did well. My mainecoon was always very attention seeking, very high energy (although 6 years old) very vocalising. One day we had to foster a kitten a few days, and to my surprise, my giant cat transformed into the most gentle sweet loving surrogate dad. (He was never mean to me, but knew how to say enough). He tried to play with the little kitten, but being the giant he is, the kitten was a little affraid of him. It took a few days for the kitten to understand that my cat was a gentle giant and began to play with him. But it was already time for the kitten to go to his forever home. I decided then to look for a cat for my cat :). And I found one. An adorable, talkative, beautiful sweet cat. They play together, they run after one another, it is very nice to see them interacting. My maine coon watching every move so he doesn’t hurt the little kitten. Where is the kitten, there is my older cat. But now my older cat just doesn’t look at me anymore. He rarely comes anymore for kisses, he doesn’t follow me anymore. So i was wondering, is he angry at me for the kitten? Did I do something wrong?

    • @AllAboutCatsYT

I think you did really well! You noticed that your older cat liked having a kitten around, and you got him a companion to satisfy that need. It sounds like your cat is having a wonderful time with his new friend, and it's simply taking up his time and energy that was previously directed towards you. I don't think he's angry at all-he's having fun and enjoying the opportunity to socialize with a member of his own species. It's probably disappointing to no longer get all of that attention, but I think it's very much for the best. Imagine a parent recognizing that their child no longer wants to spend as much time with them now that they have a friend around their own age; it's bittersweet. All the best!

I have a rescue Maltipoo mix. My sweet yet distant cat, Latte has retreated to avoid the dogs. She has shown her displeasure by doing some of the things you mentioned, peeing outside of her boxes, scratching furniture, etc.
I keep thinking she needs a pal. And, by the way, she was found on the side of the road after her mother was hit and killed by a car. She had to be bottled fed in the beginning. Poor thing didn’t get off to a good start. We give her attention on her own terms. Otherwise, she will bite. I am her favorite. She follows me around and misses me whenever I am away for any length of time. When I arrive home, she mews loudly and tightly circles my legs until I stroke and pet her. Then she is like a glue stick for a few hours. She does have feral like behaviors. Even with all this, I love her very much.

@@mahmoodali5043Totally understandable. The best thing you can do is to provide a low-stress environment. Letting him outside comes with some risks, but providing a catio or other safe outdoor space may be helpful; it gives him a place to be himself without destroying or harming anything inside of the house.

We are unsure whether to get our car a sibling. She bites my calves when I walk away from her. She hates the female cat that lives next door though

It's certainly possible that your cat would seek a lot of attention from you even through there's a dog around as well!

Not really; I would book a vet visit to rule out kidney disease, diabetes, or other issues!

We foster failed a male kitten 8 weeks old when he came. A month later we started fostering a 12 year old female cat that was failing to thrive at the shelter. Both are specal needs cats, kitten has FCH and the 12 yo has hyperthyroidsim. The first week the kitten wanted nothing to do with the older one. Hissing and grouling etc. The really surprised me being he was only 3 months old. They did finally get over it and now are playmates.
