What a fantastic video, thank you! So interesting to see how she "takes stock" of the location of the babies, and how her vocalization changes. Thank you for putting this up!
Thanks for this interesting footage. We don't have wild turkeys in Ireland and we see turkeys only as Christmas dinner providers. So it was great to see the original wild bird out there in the wild defending its young. Her dark plumage, her calls, her defensive half flight etc speak of genuine survival in a wild environment. Our domestic birds show brief flashes of this behaviour but it's all for nothing. Thanks again.👍
I know a man who was knocked unconscious by a Long-eared owl, defending her little ones. He saw the owl coming, put his arms crossed in front of his face, but got hit on the head. After several minutes, he awoke from his unconciousness. Next to him lay the owl, also unconcious. As he watched from a safe distance, she slowly recovered after 10 minutes, and returned to her nest
dollehengst I would never have thought a flying bird could knock a man unconscious -so that's very interesting to know than even a relatively small bird like an owl is capable of that - thanks for the info.
@@stevecook5156 one of my friends got a severe concussion and almost died in addition to being knocked out when he was cruising on the open ocean in his boat and a 2-3 lb flying fish nailed him in the side of the head. Split his skin open and he woke up with the boat still speeding in the same direction a couple minutes later.
Hello, at what distance were you to the mother turkey and her little ones? I'm amazed that she was so comfortable with you close by. Thanks for posting.
Just a few days ago I was standing in my driveway and two birds swerved to avoid me. They were squawking and really mixing it up, the hawk made a sharp turn and the turkey landed. It looked at me and then just ran off... and yes, the turkey and deer use the parcel next to me as a nursery. The turkey seemed to fly better than I thought it could.
Yes, turkeys can fly a lot better than you'd think. We used to have a lot of them here where I live in Nebraska, and their flying ability surprised me.
You know instead of thinking it's COOL, u would have been crowned a HERO had u gathered the mother & sweet tiny babies up & made them a safe place to grow up instead of being hunted by the hawk or any other bird of I prey (& I love hawks). YES, "LET NATURE TAKE ITS COURSE" people say; but you are so blessed to experience nature.... do you even realize that.... think about how many in the world who don't even know what any of these birds look like in real life...... so I think they should be PROTECTED & SAVED every chance we get as humans...turkeys don't come around everyday....capturing what happened, is RARE. Imagine how good you would feel saving them. And then having the turkeys trust you with more families in the future. I know it's been 11yrs since u did this video; but I hope you'll try to teach your son or daughter how precious nature is & how LUCKY u are to live where u can make a difference & make the future for your little ones & your future grandchildren & so on, even more special & safe.
I'm kind of surprised that the turkey hen didn't double back and start dive-bombing the cameraman. I guess she had more of a sense of where the real danger was.
As a personal experience, I used to see a flock of them wandering through an industrial park where I work a couple of years ago. They only started putting distance between you and them if you climbed out of the car and started following them. Of course these didn't have brood chicks to look after in mid-winter...
It depends where you are. If you go to State Forests and etc, turkeys will fly off at the very first detection of humans...you can be 300 yards away and your only sighting will be their fleeing wings and speck bodies. Then there's the ones that hang around towns that will sit on cars and let you walk almost right up to them. They're only afraid when you act suspicious, just like mallards.
Feels like I'm walking in my backyard - see this often, especially the hawks. Have a HUGE gathering of these turkeys that show up from time to time too - haven't seen them with babies yet though... Per the comments below, I've yet to see the hawks hunt together, I see them every day and always alone. Along with 1/2 a dozen other raptors.
Very cool. You were lucky to have caught that on camera. I don't think you caused it to happen and I am really surprised the hawk saw you and decided to come on in for a bite of lunch anyways.
While looking out at a large meadow, the grass suddenly became alive. It took a few seconds before I realized it was covered with turkeys and their poult.
where did you see that? spent a lot of time hunting and watching turkeys and have never seen them kill or even injure a hawk or owl they just want to get away from them
You must be a very insignificant person- neither this wild turkey with young or this attacking red-tailed hawk pay the least bit of attention to your being right there! 😂
Admittedly the motherly instinct is very strong as seen in this video, where this turkey goes all the way to protect her chicks.I have seen another video where a turkey was fleeing for it's life, from a hawk stalking her all over a place.
Someone should breed condors to be even bigger. Would be funny to see human moms deal with that. They think it’s hard having one baby... what if they popped out 15 and had to worry about birds and shit.
What a fantastic video, thank you! So interesting to see how she "takes stock" of the location of the babies, and how her vocalization changes. Thank you for putting this up!
Enjoyed this very much. I've noticed that turkeys are super protective and territorial! What a great film capture. Thanks
Ben Franklin must have known the brave natural of turkeys. He had wanted them as our national symbol back during his time.

I am down loading this to practice calling. This is some of the best sound audio I've ever seen of a live wild turkey
Looks like she's been there before. Turkey's are not stupid. They are at a disadvantage. One of the best nature clips I've seen. Thanks!!!
Momma Turkey said, "I'll have none of that", and chased the hawk up a tree. If I didn't see it, I wouldn't have believed it.
Eeyup.
Turkey should be really proud of this turkey
Mothers are all the same once you mess with their kiddoes...no matter if they have feathers or not Lol...

Hawk went back for cranberry sauce
Good one!
That motherly instinct is truly powerful, wow!
What a great natural wildlife video to have captured. Probably once in a life time.
DrewWasMe nah, with chickens you see a hawk try swooping in like, everyday
awesome!! they are very protective surprised she didn't go after the cameraman too.
I would have enjoyed that because he acts like they haven’t invented the zoom function for cameras so he’s practically stepping on the baby chicks
instablaster.
Cameraman was disguised as a turkey, he was pretty safe...
Those little ducklings are so cute
poults
Turkeys make great parents.

"NOT UP IN HERE!!"
“Well that was cool”
These animals had the entire earth for them before Humans messed everything up....

Good job mrs turkey, hawk is tough against little ones, not so much against big ones.
Wild turkeys are tough, I wouldn't mess with that mom!!
That’s first day stuff
Wild Turkey 🦃 101
Don’t mess with the Turk lol

Little baby turkeys are so cute! *__*
I hate eating turkey. They are such majestic animals.we had a pair as pets..Real cool.i had loved them
Baby turkeys need to be closer to mama next time. They can't wander away.
Momma said , Oh Hell Naw ! 💯😂😂😂😂👌🏾
Go mama turkey!
Did the hawk get a chick? I tried to slow it down and couldn’t even seen than
I want to say no because the hawk landed on a branch. I don't think it could do that if it was holding a chick in one of its feet
Rule #1: Don't mess with mom! Period.
MOMMA TURKEY: Mr hawk you better take yo AZZ & go find a rat 🐀 or a 🐇 rabbit for dinner "" I don't play dat" messin wit my babies"
I bet that red-tail hawk thought that the wild turkey mother can't fly but guess what wild turkeys can fly.
Hawk wanted an early Thanksgiving meal.
She just went from a small weak looking turkey to god mode.

Cool video! Beware of the wrath of momma turkey!
never saw any videos about turkeys ---thanks
She's a TURKEY but she ain't no turkey!
We have red shouldered hawks in our neighborhood. I've witnessed them eating Robin chick's.
Which one was the turkey, the one that ran away ?
Did it get a polt?
Very Cool ! Thanks for sharing!
Don't mess with those Hens, She'll put You up a tree😁
I'm kind of surprised that the turkey hen didn't double back and
start dive-bombing the cameraman. I guess she had more of a
sense of where the real danger was.
She is obviously a tame turkey...she would never let a human that close otherwise, especially with a brood of chicks.
Are you kidding? Wild Turkeys are fearless, attacking mailmen throughout New England, even in urban areas relentlessly...
As a personal experience, I used to see a flock of them wandering through an industrial park where I work a couple of years ago. They only started putting distance between you and them if you climbed out of the car and started following them. Of course these didn't have brood chicks to look after in mid-winter...
Umm turkeys don't divebomb anything. Send the camera man was not a perceived threat.

Seems like she would get them into deep cover!
Great video man that momma trust you awesome job.
The Hawk just wanted to gobble up his thanksgiving leftovers...

Outstanding that you were able to catch that on video
Very cool. You were lucky to have caught that on camera. I don't think you caused it to happen and I am really surprised the hawk saw you and decided to come on in for a bite of lunch anyways.
Youre descriptions say "wild hen turkey" but would seem like its your pet turkey to able to get so close to her and her chicks?
I've seen where a hawk or an owl has gotten a pheasant in Illinois when I was out hunting. Just where the feathers were left.
is that his pet turkey? why didnt the turkey attack the guy filming the babies
Awesome turkey..momma.i love it...
Awesome video thx
While looking out at a large meadow, the grass suddenly became alive. It took a few seconds before I realized it was covered with turkeys and their poult.
0:39 she stepped on the baby! :(
+Sondo Sawning the chick is okay
Yeah my turkeys sometimes does that and it's no problem reallt
She only weighs about 15 or so pounds whereas Bigfoot with the camera is probably 170 pounds
@@frankjohnson6342 Bigfoot? Had me dying
Turkey should play offensive line for Jerry Jones Cowboys
Muito bonito a proteção aos filhotes.
Hawk was smart to leave well enough alone. Wild turkeys can make short work of hawks/owls, etc.
where did you see that? spent a lot of time hunting and watching turkeys and have never seen them kill or even injure a hawk or owl they just want to get away from them
Hawk was like o snap tons of fun can bust a move
Wild turkeys can run nearly as fast as adult humans
thats not fast humans are slow
I think the hawk. One of the babies
thank you
The turkey was distracted by you
I’m surprised the hawk flew in with the guy that close.
Hawks dgaf... I've had them within 10 yards of me to grab up my small chicks.
You must be a very insignificant person- neither this wild turkey with young or this attacking red-tailed hawk pay the least bit of attention to your being right there! 😂
His distracting presence may have been why the hawk decided to make its attempt.
OMG, that was awesome.
Well did she find them again?
do you guys know by any chance if a hen becomes more defensive once she haves her babychicks or not?
Oh yes!
Masha Allah Very Nice ❤❤
Those turkey don't play when it comes to young ones
Admittedly the motherly instinct is very strong as seen in this video, where this turkey goes all the way to protect her chicks.I have seen another video where a turkey was fleeing for it's life, from a hawk stalking her all over a place.
freaking awesome love this video.
right now for the bird project i am doing Red-Tailed Hawk
Yes hawks are shy around people but I have seen them swoop in close for prey. Hunger is a powerful motivator.
moms are awesome
That was cool!!!!!!
One thing I know about this bird is that it is NOT A CHICKEN.
Would've been better if camera work was better!.
Thank god im human
Loved it....Thanks
Yep, prison time for MrWillbarrel. All birds of prey are protected by federal law.
QUE MAMA TAN VALIENTE 😀💪💪💪
I love that turkey I have seen something like this personally, linkbelt08 upload more videos like this please.
Starts at 1:00
@mattmonsterful That Turkey was very brave. I guess when they with child, most animals are brave.
After the attack and she drove the hawk away, she called for her little ones but I didn't see any of them coming!
Don’t get in the way of a momma and her babies.
i want to see a longer fight
wild turkeys are meaner than people realize
This Turkey real angry birds.. 😊
Can't believe it .
Wild turkeys are not to be fucked with.
