Jonny's spot on about including the history and tradition that go into these beers which to me make it feel more precious than splashing the same amount on a Triple Hopped DIPA. Maybe it's the element that these beers could be aged, as I find myself with an expanding beerstash 😅
I'm dreaming of a Chimay Christmas for sure, if I can get hold of a bottle of the last one - which I'd never heard of until this vid. I also have never heard of the green but am willing to tackle it if it ever dares to cross my path. Thanks for the monkish brewlumination.
Green is definitely one of my favorites from Chimay. We only get it in select shops where I’m from, and I’m not sure if it’s down to improper storage or just being on the shelf for so long but I get absolutely no menthol or candlestick character from it at all. If anything it just tastes like a bigger version of the White Chimay for me, which is why I like it so much. Maybe it gets less weird with age!
Well I don't know how the beer was treated but it was relatively fresh, and the brewery itself says to expect mint. I think it's likely our different palates rather than a difference in the beer. We are all sensitive and less sensitive to certain aromas.
I’ve only tried it one time, and the comments about mint etc were surprising. My bottle label says floral, hints of dried fruit and spices. I don’t recall anything like mint or bergamot, but I didn’t do any research before purchase or tasting. In fact I didn’t even realise it was a 10% abv beer before the first sip. That impression of alcoholic strength pulled me up though and sent me to reading the label.
@@TheCraftBeerChannel fairly certain it's an age thing. i live in america (i assume these 2 other commenters are also american thou obv i could be mistaken) and the green has never had any mint/menthol to me. like OP said, like a bigger version of the white. if nything, when it arrives here in america if i were to draw a comparison it's like the between point of chimay white and tripel de garre also! ive only ever been able to find it in 750ml w cork. maybe the bottling makes a difference here
I've come to like Belgian Singels or Patersbiers and have been brewing them at home. Nice flavors and aromas like Tripels, but something you can have a few of and not get too hammered. Nice work gents!
It’s funny you say, you don’t see the white that much. That one is the only one available in UK supermarkets. It’s definitely in Tesco & Morrisons. I rarely see the red & blue, although I don’t visit actual bottle shops very often. Love the videos
If you send this off to the analytical chemistry department of University, they could quantify the proportions of what compounds in the beer. If you know where these compounds are found, you can then take a pretty good educated guess as to their ingredients. The beer will have a graph that has compounds across the horizontal axis, and relative amount on the Y. They usually have a "library" of ingredients/compounds that they've tested and they can use clever maths to guess at what combinations of those ingredients were combined in what proportions to get the sum output in that beer/whiskey/wine etc. I know that at least one distillery employs at least one university to do this for them with their competitors whiskeys.
Yeah I 'm belgian and Chimay bleue was once one of my favourite beer when I was a student ( -+ 20 yo) But ever since I'm into craft beers and developpe dmy palate I enjoy chimay bleue much less as I also get that nail polish kind of taste It is DELICIOUS mixed 2 to 1 with port wine , we call it a Velours in cas you never tried that, it's a nice and easy beer cocktail. carefull if you drink the whole chimay + 15 mL port wine it's gonne get you hammered pretty fast
Had Gold a couple of times from the barrel, and it was excellent. But I don't like the 33cl bottle because it's too gassy. 75cl cork stopper is a good compromise.
Now I have the vision of monks running around munching on candles. Oh Brad, don't ever stop being you! Great take on Chimay and good luck getting inside anything but that somewhat disappointing Chimay inn/experience center.
I believe Chimay use hop extract so won't be old. Orval is about as hoppy as Trappist beers get, still very low by modern standards but that beer actually pretty close in many ways to the original English IPA - pale, bretted, dry hopped, dry as hell.
I also really got eucalyptus from Chimay Green, in that sense it is similar to the Italian trappist Tre Fontane Tripel! I also really get the nailpolish in Chimay White and love it. I always drink Chimay White when available in a bar, but almost never at home. Do you also have beers that are more 'bar beers' than 'home beers' to you? Again a fun dive into Trappistania!😊
Chimay Blue is better from the 75cl bottle (cork stopper) and needs age. So you need to try the Calvados finished Blue against the standard 2023 in 75cl. Much less of a difference.
I was not a fan of the Anniversary beer either. Too odd. I like the rest. Blue was my Belgian beer entry beer (on Honeymoon there). The White is my current fav.

Finally got round to Part two . Having just had “Three rules” I’ve got right back into Trappist beer . Cheers 🍻. Speno
Belgian beer and their sours are my favorite. Thanks for the share.

As an Earl Grey drinker, you have wounded me!
Sorry Nan. I mean man.
You have wounded Jean Luc Picard too.
The blue is my favourite. Love these!
Gold one supposedly has coriander seeds and bitter orange peel. And yes it is very saisony.
Mate, your videos are a refreshing break from all the depressing crap on my youtube feed these days (damn algorithm!). Love your stuff!
I think the best part of Chimay beers is how different they are, yet they have that something that binds them together also.
Brad's "Hello" as he was sniffing was classic.
I've come to like Belgian Singels or Patersbiers and have been brewing them at home. Nice flavors and aromas like Tripels, but something you can have a few of and not get too hammered. Nice work gents!
Loving this! Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much guys!
Well done, fellas! I'm really enjoying these trappist beer videos. Cheers!

I feel like in America I see the triple pretty often.
Love a Chimay - have picked up the Triple in Tesco recently too!

Menthol cigarettes are not banned in the U.S. . The FDA started talking about it two years ago and they are working on it, but nothing official yet.
Now I have the vision of monks running around munching on candles. Oh Brad, don't ever stop being you!

It is possible that Chimay red and blue are brewed with older hops. As for hops orval is quite hoppy.
I believe Chimay use hop extract so won't be old. Orval is about as hoppy as Trappist beers get, still very low by modern standards but that beer actually pretty close in many ways to the original English IPA - pale, bretted, dry hopped, dry as hell.

THis is a good question! I (Jonny) drink a lot of hazy and west coast pales at home, but drink a lot of Pils and Helles and classic cask ales when out
Any way to preorder the book internationally? 😅
I believe Amazon is the best bet for this. Though in America there are lots of options as it is being released there too
My wife gifted me the Grande Reserve for Xmas, proof she loves me.
The way to a man's heart is through his bloodstream.
So many great references to Brad's nan.
For completion you should have put in Mont des Cats as well, since this is brewed at Chimay. Mind you, its not a revelation.....
These have been a great series, however I can see a beer stash replacing my bank balance. I blame you guys!
@richarddrew8351 to be fair, you can't drink money....

When is it best to open a Chimay grand reserve as I have a 2024 Grand reserve.
Depends how it has been stored! If it hasn't been at cellar temp, I'd recommend within 5 years. Could go longer if stored really well.
Missed chance to end the video with "we can only...pray".
Interesting that the Triple is spelled as such and not "Tripel"
You need to make a Tynt Meadow video lads

How did I miss this!!! 😂
Brandy is distilled Wine and Calvados is distilled Cider.
Apologies for our confusion there
whiskey is distilled beer

I always love to do the dishes with the Green.... Definately not my favorite.
There is no such thing as "trappist styles" though...
Uncharted as a brewery, try em, see how much they don't like hops :p
There's no such thing as trappist styles, but there are four styles invented by Trappist breweries.
Nail polish 🤮
Classic underpitching yeast health issue
Indeed! But also a classic Belgian yeast characteristic.... just occasionally overdone.
