    Apparently Lizzie's scandalous new brother-in-law is starting over at the bottom of the Redcoat pecking order: an ensign is the lowest officer rank in British army.

    Ahh bliss, your voice, your wonderful laughter and the 'noises of you taping your phone back up', have made me grin, laugh and giggle.. Thank you again and again Jennifer, for brightening all our days.. *sighs*

    TY for the laugh, I love it! Much needed, thank you ☺️ Hate when things don’t cooperate 🥴
    I agree with your assessment of Mr. Bennet. Jane Austen has such a wonderful way of creating characters. It’s almost like Lizzy was seeing both her father and Mr. Darcy in new lights at the same time. Two men she was closest to. Both characters are written in such a way that they are endearing but flawed at the same time. Mr. Bennet is more endearing early in the novel and Mr. Darcy is flawed. By the end, you see Mr. Bennets flaws and Mr. Darcy’s endearing qualities. Masterful 💗

    Jennifer, Just put on a Regency gown , a spencer and a bonnet, no make up, and that will do the trick, you're Lizzy again! It's amazing, 25 years later! Your liveliness, generous laugh and easy manners give joy to and endear the readers. Greetings from France!

    (Sorry,, this turned out longer than I intended! 🙃)
    Precisely why we’re so drawn to Jane Austen, I think. Her characters are so authentic and well-portrayed. She paints their humanity so perfectly. When you look at them “in a prudential light” (😊), considering the time they’re supposed to be living and the constraints of society, etc., it’s easy to suspend reality - which is what makes good fiction anyway, isn’t it? - imagine their situation and understand their flaws. Yes, full of cringe moments and regretful actions but incredibly HUMAN... just translate things to today and we all have examples.
    Mr. Bennett is certainly a great character. It’s a little sad, but also very essential to her own development as a character, that Elizabeth comes to understand his faults as a father/person. I think you’re right, that until she could acknowledge and accept his imperfections she wouldn’t move past that depth of (understanding) love. I think she had to get to the point, as we all do, of accepting that no one, even the father whom she idolized, could be everything. We must accept the ones we love for what they CAN be, and be grateful for it without expecting more.
    No one can be everything but everyone is something. Appreciate what they ARE. Understanding this, especially in our idols/role models, is a huge step in our growth as a person.
    Thank you for taking the time to do this. I’ve looked forward to it each day.
    Stay well 💜

      Such a lovely point, I sometimes thought we can’t be “adult” until we realise our parents are just ‘some people’ like any others and it is only through our eyes that they are such important figures. Sometimes I think ego thrives on admiration from innocence and ignorance which can keep encouraging bad habits.

    • @scherzo8022
      @scherzo8022 3 года назад +2

      Triss X This is a poignant observation, I think. We want so much to grow up but also to hold on to innocence - even when we don’t realize that innocence IS what we want. We don’t want to know and accept the failures of our mentors or those we admire. But maturing is nothing if not learning to CHOOSE to see someone’s strengths - even if their failures are much more apparent.
      We must live in the world as it is, not as we would like it to be. Do our best to be better - yes, encourage positive change - yes, but acknowledge that people are imperfect. Show compassion and unconditional love, even as we make our own mistakes and require the same in return.

    Interesting theory about Lizzie. I think she begins to abandon her father's cynicism (and the constant piss-taking that results from it) after the first proposal and the letter because she's forced to realize that it can be just as self-deceptive as Jane's overoptimism. She seems at least intrigued by Mr. Darcy almost from the beginning, and she discounts a whack of circumstantial evidence that he doesn't dislike her at all as she wants to believe he does. When her eyes are opened, she's at the top of the slippery slope, but I think she learns to love Darcy more than falls for him.

    That is an extremely intriguing thought from Jennifer, that Elizabeth will not be able to fall in love with anyone until she is able to see the character flaws in her father. It strikes me as an accurate assessment even though I cannot trace the logic. It has only just occurred to me how much Austen's novel is driven by changes in perception, perhaps even more than development of characters. Off hand, I can't think of anyone in the story who changes their spots. They are each essentially the same person from beginning to end, except maybe Darcy who strives to become more amenable to others.

      And the fact that she had these feelings and came to the realization of what kind of man he truly was BEFORE she knew of his stepping in in the middle of the Lydia/Wickham situation just shows that the feelings she had developed for him weren’t because he helped her family. That fact just added to her affection for him.
