Let me know what you think but if I'll stand my ground here... if you're gonna make a historical show, you might as well make sure that the people you're portraying at a certain date are STILL ALIVE...

An excellent analysis. During the 70s and 80s, historical series such as the British 'The Six Wives of Henry VIII', 'Elizabeth R' and the French 'The Accursed Kings' stuck to the facts and, although they interpreted some characters' motivations in creative ways, they were pretty accurate. As such, they were highly educational and provided the young with an entertaining, enjoyable and sound knowledge of history. These modern shows have completely abandoned accuracy in favour of simplistic, over-emotional, highly sexualised 'drama' which confuses, rather than edifying, young people. It is sadly typical of today's 'dumbing down' approach to everything, from history, to culture and politics.

I’m almost glad my French history knowledge is limited so I can watch and hopefully enjoy it because I won’t be able to spot every faux pas. I too believe in artistic license but I also believe we ought to respect history and its protagonists and the role of fiction is to give them life and dialogue and not change history

Absolument d'accord! I have the same issue with several series I have seen in past years (e.g. The Tudors, The Borgias, The Great, Sissi, The Empress and others). It is beyond irritating. I literally, keep a notepad next to me to mark down the errors - just to redirect the frustration. Narratives are immensely powerful in shaping how we teach or share history, especially memory or even national memory; which is a big concern for me atleast.

This video is exactly why I like your channel. You are a historian that understands that some creative license should be given to historical fiction to allow the producers the opportunity to make the show enjoyable and popular...BUT there are limits (as you say). I, like you, don't get why they made the choices they did. The real history of Catherine de Medici is already fascinating. Sticking to the broad facts while taking some license about unrecorded conversations or motivations is the way to with these shows. Don't get me started the Lady (Queen) Jane Grey series....I just can't with that show. - - Thank you for your fantastic, and well balanced reviews

Not to be a spoilsport, but how can you say that the timeliness in this are bad, when "Our Lady Jane" has Edward being a grown man, black, and in a wheelchair and Guilford Dudley turning into a horse? The only redeeming feature of this show is the actress who plays Catherine. She reminds me of Natalie Dormer as she acts a lot through her eyes. Her eyes tell the story.
Even though Reign is a crap show, they had the best Catherine De' Medici in Meghan Follows. She was epic. And my favorite Elizabeth I of all time was Rachel Skarsgard. She is beautiful, regal, funny, and she has the most snapping eyes when she is angry.
I'm going to watch this, because why not, but as with the Tudors, I have educated myself on Catherine de' Medici so I know when they are ridiculous! That is the beauty of these types of shows, they generate interest to find out the real facts. In a compliment to "The Tudors" were incredibly more realistic than this!
I love your channel. You are beautiful and you are smart as a whip! I watch every video and I'll continue to watch as many as you'll put out! I'm an American in body, but British in my heart.

I thought that was Henry VIII? But also, OLJ is as close to history as Game of Thrones, which is the point. No one thinks either are historical dramas once you get fantasy elements thrown in. If they aren't trying to show history as it "really was" as they do in historical dramas, I don't care what someone looks like. If they are, it drives me insane to have a brunette Henry and Catherine of Aragon. I keep telling myself that in Elizabeth's time, no women were on stage at all. Then again, at that point, Shakespeare is a soap opera.

At least with the Serpent Queen the costumes are historically accurate to the time period, I couldnt watch Reign because in my opinion, the costumes look like a 2010s prom dress. I honestly like both actresses , the serpent queen actress was a bit better for the role because her facial expressions are on point, her monotone voice shows a more manipulative Catherine. I like Reign actress the best on Anne of Green Gables, the 1980s Anne was the best one.

I watched Season One and am ready to start Season Two. My knowledge of Sixteenth-Century history is not extensive (and what I know is more English than French), but I DO know enough to be aware that the writers took a LOT of liberties . . . perhaps following the mantra of Broomhilda, the Green-Faced Witch of American comic strips of a couple of decades ago: "History's kinda like a mixed drink; ya just keep addin' stuff to it 'til ya get it the way ya want it!" Then again, the Late, Great Professor Peter Schickele opined, "Truth is just truth; you can't have opinions about truth." Anyone who tunes in to the series for any purpose other than amusement is in for a shock - and probably disappointment. That said, I DID enjoy the first season, even as I gnashed my teeth at some of the worst offenses to the Muse of History, my candidate being the repeated use of "Holy Roman Emperor," when people of the time would merely have said "the Emperor" - because he was the ONLY one! But, that's a mere quibble in an ocean of misattributions, misstatements and downright invention. But, then, to paraphrase someone somewhere, half of the viewers love the show and half of them hate the show, but one hundred per cent of them WATCH the show.
The solution is simple: If you can't stand historical inaccuracy, then stay away from shows like "The Serpent Queen".

Agree 100%! We haven’t had an accurate version of so many of these stories-can we get that first, before you go off the deep end of dumb? And nothing needs to be modernized-everything was created in the era it lives for a reason. But “modernizing” history is an oxymoron! 😅One of the main reasons people are drawn to it is because it was so dissimilar to the present. I cringed so hard when one of the Guise’s actually said “easy-peasy lemon squeezy.” WTF? Whoever wrote that should be fired immediately. Stuff like that and the modern music, with lyrics about driving (hello?! It’s 1572) just rip me right out of the world, so the whole escapism aspect I used to love about period films is just gone. It’s just like watching a bunch of modern people with weird taste in clothes.

i know am late to this but the reason why we love period dramas is the love for history and historical escapism. we already love it because of how it played out , why film makers these days go out to switch up everything and disregard the truth is annoying. and this modern twist they bring into it utter nonsense . we want the dialogue ,the historical mannerism, something the russians and turkish do well.

If you want fictional drama - like you stated - do not use specific people. I might try a program for a moment but if it goes off on a modern tangent, I am out. Then I find the real story. Thank you.

Everyone needs to chill out. Entertainment does not equal education, these stories are inspired by history not a documentation of them. I watch these shows and then go through the real facts and realize the shows bring more drama than actual events which i asume is the point for what is essentially a consumer product. Real historical facts in drama ends up with shows with too many characters to care about any of them.
