    This video is 3 years old but still very relevant. Paying yourselves first, tracking expenses, reducing or eliminating debt, and stacking away more money for retirement.
    Really great video

    Thanks for the video. I'm 43 and have been retired almost a year now. People always seemed to get upset at my frugality, would tell me you only live once. I'd tell them you're right, start saving. I'm hoping to have all my stuff sold and given away by March, to do some traveling. Belize, El Salvador, Vietnam, Thailand, is on the list. You only live once! :-)

    Retired at 49 and 3 months... (2012) left the States, My wife and I live at the beach in El Salvador on a $1500 a month budget, but this includes a Maid (not necessary) health insurance $96 for both of our coverage and extra unneeded expenses, so I think that you can make it for under $1000.....

    I am 47. Been selling everything I own (which ain't much) to move to SEA before I am 50. I will have to work at least part time as an ESL teacher to sustain myself but I won't be working in a shop as a welder all day everyday just to pay bills. I do not understand how you can fully retire without working to some extent unless your wealthy.

    • @JerryBrownTravels
      @JerryBrownTravels  8 лет назад +1

      Great question. Deciding where you want to live and how much money you have saved is the big question. At your age and wanting to retire you're right it is a good idea to have a supplement income coming in this way you do not deplete your savings. The other alternative is to work till you're 60 and that gives you 10 more years to keep saving. By choosing a country such as Mexico, Thailand, Cambodia, the Philippines you're able to live on half of what it would cost you to live in the United States this way your money goes a lot further and you do not have to save as much. I have friends who are living in Southeast Asia as little as $700 a month. They are not living like a king but they're pulling it off in seem to be happy.

    Leaving the United States and retiring in Mexico was the best thing my wife and I did. We live in San Pancho, which is close to Saluyita. A typical day for us is waking up early, walking an hour on the beach, going to breakfast, then we take Spanish lessons from a local school here. I surf, I eat healthy food, and I lost over 85 lbs living in Mexico 🇲🇽

    What a sweet couple! Thanks for introducing them to us, Jerry and Lori. I love your videos and can't wait to come back to Ajijic in January 2018.
    We are in our late 60"s and early 70's and still working full/part time. We haven't saved money like this smart couple, but we have found a way to work less and live more. We spend at least half of our days exercising, singing, playing music, walking, and doing all the things we would in Ajijic. To make Ajijic affordable, I am starting a new project to connect with people online while we are away -- and when we return.
    PS. We are marriage counsellors, and you two are adorable together!!

I thought if it costs them $1500 month for this tiny apartment, forget it. Not doable for me. Although I could definitely live in a little place like that. I’m single and don’t need very much. But, $350.00 a month.....NOW you’re talking!

    Saving in this manner is idealized considering that you don't have mounting medical bills with a chronic illness and no health insurance. Add the years you were working that were mostly spent helping your parents survive. My parents for example, were poor immigrants in a new country whom never learned the language so they lived check to check on minimum wage. Older people call us out for not saving, but supporting our parents in a bad economy is the bane of the working young generation that nobody talks about.

    • @JerryBrownTravels
      @JerryBrownTravels  8 лет назад +1

      You're 100% correct if somebody has large medical expenses because of their health and do not have A reasonable medical insurance plan ( this can be a problem wherever you live in the world )
      Unfortunately the United States has a lot more problems with their medical coverage.
      If your parents are 65 years old they are eligible for Medicare and then can be affordable I pay for full coverage medical and medication drugs $35 a month for my Medicare.(I can only use in United States) you're good person to care for your parents. Keep doing what you do it is appreciated.

I want to work less cause my body is hurting doing bedside nursing. Cars are paid off. No credit card debt. I wish I could sell my house right now but it’s my retirement nest egg. Still going to work but when I want to.

      Not just a video about investing. Before we invested, we had to decide to make experiences more important than acquiring "things". We stopped trying to keep up with the Joneses and we paid ourselves first. Investment didn't come right away because we had to build up an emergency fund/nest egg first.

    sounds so simple to live on 1500 a month. I assume they have no health insurance. They have to have a few million to make it till old age.

    • @JerryBrownTravels
      @JerryBrownTravels  7 лет назад

      Michael here's a magic formula
      Take the amount of money you need to live on one year and multiply that by 20 and that will give you how much money you need to retire safely.
      So if we take that $1500 dollars a month and Multiply that by 12 that gives us $18,000 dollars a year
      Now we will multiply that by 20 and you'll need $360,000 to has saved to allow you to live on that money of $1500 a month.
      Michael please give me your comments on this please I would really appreciate hearing from you can you do that for me.

      I like your formula, however, you don't factor in inflation and the fact that boomers are retiring in droves and where they congregate in places such as Lake Chapala, real estate rental prices are going up and so are home sale prices. Law of supply and demand. 650 for a rental today will be far higher in the years to come. You can't rely on a static number. If you want international health insurance worth anything then you will pay through the nose and the rates will only go higher as you get older. IMSS in Mexico is in deep financial straits and for expats is almost impossible to get into now. You also have to factor in having a reserve set aside for emergencies, etc. I can go on and on but I do believe you understand what I am getting at. Life is not static, nor are the expenses that go along with it. Just look at the countries that were once very affordable and expats flocked to them and now have to leave because of political upheaval. I say the best plan is to double what you need monthly as a baseline. Savings interest rates won't go up considerably from here and that won't keep up with inflation and investing it would be foolish. World"s economy is changing. Ameican Pension plans are adjusting their figures to reflect a 3 to 4 % rate of return a year instead of a 7 percent return and it can't even be guaranteed that some will even be in existence leaving many people high and dry. As for medicare, prices are rising every year if you also include Medigap. For Americans, all you have to look at is the country's balance sheet. It is not sustainable which will force many to leave driving up costs in the areas they move to even further. The good old subtle gringo tax as we all know comes into play in many areas. And as poor countries become more technologically advanced local wages and prices will rise ,also. I wish I could feel comfortable living with your formula but what were the prices of items 20 years ago versus today? What were the Interest rates ON US savings accounts 20 years ago vs. today? What were the immigration laws 20 years ago vs. today? Try and open an overseas brokerage account with a US firm. Look at the fluctuation this year in the peso, alone. The world is changing rapidly and what was normal yesterday cannot be relied upon as that's the way it will be for the next 20 years let alone the next 5. I have stopped and smelled the roses and have to adjust my retirement savings to reflect what anyone with an understanding of finance and world politics can plainly see.. What is going on politically and economically can throw a monkey wrench into your equation in a minute. Ask the expats who moved to Venezuela or to many areas of Brazil and even on the coasts of Mexico. Easy to get up and go in your forties. Quite different in your seventies even with good health. What if Mexico and other countries change their immigration policies towards Americans? We used to be a land that welcomed everyone. Now look at what's going on. As I am writing this, where my wife works 20 South Americans were picked up in the middle of the night by ICE and will be deported. It can become a 2 way street. Economic nationalism is very scary. One has to plan and try and incorporate some out of the box, what if thinking into the equation. I like to plan for the worst and hope for the best, but time has taught me that hope is not a good strategy. I consider myself to be A realistic optimist, someone who looks on the bright side of life but has a realistic grasp on the present and what to expect in life. Lessons learned the hard way. www.usdebtclock.org/

      Good luck with that glass chewing. To each their own, indeed! Our purpose is to see and experience as much as this planet has to offer before we die. To do good and to be good along the way. We literally learn something new every single day in this lifestyle. What's your purpose? Does a purpose only have to involve work? I think not. Isn't it great that we're not all the exact same? We love our life.

      They probably did not have children, most people who do retire early do NOT have children, as much joy (or not) having a child can bring you, they are NOT conducive to saving money.

      Yes, our son is graduated from college and out on his own but we did retire early when he was still in college. Now, he's forging his own path to early retirement. Paying himself first and living below his means are the keys for our son, who is just now out in the working world making his own plans for early retirement in his 40s. (20 yrs away)
