WHen I first saw it in that first moment I thought he was intentionally messing with her cause his voice breaks when he sings Emma, where people infected have perfect pitch so he must just be fooling if his voice broke. So I was like, "Ha, what a kidder." Then a few seconds later when he doesn't stop, "Oh shit, this is legit isn't it?" I imagine some of the audience was also going through that moment of not thinking it was real at first.

Paul didn't like musicals, but now that he's part of the Hive, he loves them.
Man,,, this ending is so cheery yet so dark. Especially with Emma screaming when they start singing Showstopping number because she knows Paul wasn't there to hear it. All she wanted was to survive with Paul and the hivemind decided to fuck with her mind so bad,,,

Out of those 4 Paul is the most interesting because he hates the fact they're singing over the fact he might die. Like several times the hive had plenty of opportunities to infect paul like when greg grabs him after show stopping number or when mcnamara lifts paul up and both times they dont infect him even though they could. It's like a cat playing with a mouse, the hive knows paul can't stop them so they let him try and stop them. Emma just became the new target when she figured out how to stop the hive and showed interest in paul (when she tried to kiss him the first time professor higgens was right behind them and Paul told Mcnamara he wanted their relationship to become something more)

It was such a fuckin gut-dropping moment when this happened. For like the first minute I held out hope that Paul was actually just singing and faking his apotheosis, especially with the lyrics kinda hinting at singing to survive, but when he started doing the choreography I was sure there was no fucking way. I mean... OK. So, like... At the end of the day, it's up to interpretation, according to Starkids, though they claim there is a definitive answer. My thought goes to... well... every person we see turned. Coffee Drinkers? Near-instantaneous. Ted? Instantaneous. But Paul? He took AGES to "join the hivemind" like... an entire song. and even then, he ended the song by acting out against the Hive. He had more control over himself than any previous person infected, with the Hive, likewise, acknowledging him as someone who could potentially stand in their way. And he was standing literally right next the meteor. Tons of spores. Now, I don't think that Paul is human anymore... But I don't think he's part of the Hive, either. At least, not fully. My theory is? Paul's fighting against the parasite this whole number. He keeps on leading Emma away from the other aliens, and it seems like several times when the tune is changed, it results in the cast being too concerned with their choreography to pay attention to Emma. There were plenty of times when Paul could have killed Emma, or converted her, but didn't. Though, clearly, by the end of the number, Paul's been completely taken over, not doing anything to stop the others from killing Emma. The Apotheosis is Upon Us, might be the Hive announcing that both Paul and Emma are about to be fully converted.

Everyone loves the 'Show stopping number' scream, but I think the biggest thing about it is when Emma starts falling prey to the non-diagetic things. She see's beyond the veil, and it doesn't initially occure to her just how doomed she is when she does so. Think about it, when Emma and Paul go through the audience in act 1, they just say its a bunch of shrubs. Funny at the time. We also know that only the infected hear the music, the uninfected just see people singing at them. But Emma tries to escape here, and when she can't, cries out 'It's just a fucking loop!?" Because she just ran backstage and around. Then she turns to the audience members for help, asking people to let her use their phones without realizing that she is *talking to an audience*. She's pulled back. the show stopping number portion kicks in. Emma turns around, and she realizes what she's seeing. The lights, the staging, the audience. She's already infected, and there's no escape.
I think the scariest aspect of this song is that implies that thanks to Paul destroying the meteor the hive moved its core into Paul’s corpse meaning that the hive is now fully mobile not just its drones but it’s core as well.
I love how silly this is, and yet its still such a genuine "oh shit." moment when he sings that first line. "Emma, I'm sorry, you lost." Isn't Infected Paul singing. Thats a message straight from the Hivemind itself. A final mockery to cement its triumph.

When Show-Stopping Number kicks in, and it's the ensemble slowly making their way in a line towards Emma as she screams in horror...whoever thought of that is a genius because they managed to make such a ridiculous scene in theory so incredibly frightening. Chills every time.
Honestly as dark as this song is the moment when “Show Stopping Number” started and she just started screaming is the funniest thing to me. Just the image of a group of people having the time of their life doing a “happy song and dance“ with her just absolutely terrified. I’m sorry but 2:15 Is the best part. Lauren and Jon’s acting, the choreography, the gut wrenching moment where we *know* Paul is gone. Show stopping number is the only song Emma knows Paul wasn’t present for. This is where she reaches her peak of fear, when her and the audience are aware there is no saving them anymore. Also- the scream is so chilling every time I hear it, you can hear the fear is Lauren’s voice it’s just 😩. I get goosebumps every time I listen to this part
Five years later and this is still by far my favorite of the Hatchefield endings. It’s just so assured in its defeat of the characters. NONE of them are surviving. And even though we know it might not be too bad, it’s still absolutely horrific for Emma to watch the man she loved be possessed by a hive mind that’s the complete opposite of his personality. It literally is inevitable, that’s what makes it such good horror.
On my first watch I thought Paul wasn't infected but had just found an appreciation for music in 'Let It Out' especially with lines like "this is the life that I chose" and "I'm still the man you trust" it wasn't until everyone else started coming out I realised he was probably infected; I gained hope when he said "What if the only choice is you had to sing to survive" thinking he is only doing it to not die and then when the reprise of other songs came in with much more aggressive and blunt lyrics I accepted he was gone, every other watch I've just enjoyed watching the chaos ensue
Emma knew that Paul wasn't there for "Show Stoppin' Number" so her fear has reached it's limit when he starts singing that song. She probably was hoping that Paul was only singing to survive (foreshadowed in the lyrics. Also because every other song she was there with Paul or didn't know the song) but then when they start singing, she realises he has fallen to the infection (ig you could call it that) Genius! I love this musical so damn much! :D

Honestly Idk what the cast and crew have said on social media about this, but my head cannon is Paul is faking it because a lot of the unique lyrics are him insisting he's the one to turn Emma and not anyone else, stating it's inevitable that they have to sing to survive, and then a majority of the lyrics are basically in the same tune as all the musical numbers Paul is present for and would know well enough to play along with the hivemind. Even show stopping number because it's revealed Paul is waiting in the wings for the Professor to get carried away before he rescues Emma and Ted.
I don't think so. Look at his eyes, they're completely disfocused, just like in Let it Out. He has no reason to be faking it, since many of the others don't have the same effect: it's a unique property for him. Beyond that, when he sings, "You had to sing to survive," he backs away and doesn't look at Emma.
Adam Zheng Yes as Paris states, it's more something I like to think about they may or may not come to fruition in the actual, cannotical universe. But I feel there's a lot of different ways to interpret this final scene as it is left with a lot of ambiguousness. I believe it was initially planned for Jaime's military character to be on stage and attacked by the nurse to l turned, but that was cut as you can see for something more simplistic with her coffee boss costume coming out instead. I also feel its important to note that your attention to his eyes is definitely interesting, but we also never see Paul get turned. His musical outburst is a result of being near the meteor, not through infection from the rest of the hive, and we never truly know if his attempt to blow up the meteor succeeded or not. It's also implied by the nurse's presence that the hospital is also infected by the hive, so there's literally just a lot to unpack for any real interpretation you want to gather from it. I like to think that Paul's inherent distaste for Musicals makes him resistant and perhaps immune to the hive that even if it can manage to infect him, he can defy it and break free. But obviously he can't if he's the only one he can trust to revolt.

I had an idea, what if Paul is partially controlled by the aliens? He knows the choreography and songs cuz he is being controlled by the hive but still underneath all of that he is still Paul but he cannot speak normally and he sings to speak cuz there's multiple times the aliens don't have a strong connection to the individual, so in one of those moments Paul is still there but unable to not sing, basically living torture but is the only way he could survive, like he says it a lot of times in the song Anyways is just my headcannon
Hey guys I know I'm a bit late (4 years) but I have a theory about Emma not dying. I hands down think Paul's infected ;-; and when he sings a part of him is Pokey, which made me wonder. Paul/Pokey sings: "Or I might be inclined to - plant my seed.", and Pokey is Wiggly's brother and Wiggly tries to become human or at least to gain a human form by getting born into this world. I think Paul became the new "center" of the hive after destroying the meteor and therefore has kind of the same effect as a Wigglydoll. Maybe the hive in reality was out for Emma, so that she could eventually give birth to the human incarnation of Pokey, and since Pokey do need to become "human" I think it's a human who needs to give birth to him. So that is why I think they didn't kill her, I mean they could as well have done it. What do you guys think? Also this song and Emmas screams make me so sad ;-;

Despite all the awful alien stuff going on of course, but he looks so in love every time he looks at Emma, he even kisses her hands... and shame there are only two songs for him because that 'a kickline is INEVITABLEEEE!'? He didn't have to go that hard but he did and it's a blessing

Whatever of Paul is left in their still cares for Emma. It’s just that the best thing for Emma is to be infected, regardless of her own choice in the matter.

When Show-Stopping Number kicks in, and it's the ensemble slowly making their way in a line towards Emma as she screams in horror...whoever thought of that is a genius because they managed to make such a ridiculous scene in theory so incredibly frightening. Chills every time.
Honestly as dark as this song is the moment when “Show Stopping Number” started and she just started screaming is the funniest thing to me. Just the image of a group of people having the time of their life doing a “happy song and dance“ with her just absolutely terrified. Reminds me of those pictures of people on rollercoasters who are terrified while everyone else looks indifferent. *chefs kiss*

I’m sorry but 2:15 Is the best part. Lauren and Jon’s acting, the choreography, the gut wrenching moment where we *know* Paul is gone. Show stopping number is the only song Emma knows Paul wasn’t present for. This is where she reaches her peak of fear, when her and the audience are aware there is no saving them anymore. Also- the scream is so chilling every time I hear it, you can hear the fear is Lauren’s voice it’s just 😩. I get goosebumps every time I listen to this part

Five years later and this is still by far my favorite of the Hatchefield endings. It’s just so assured in its defeat of the characters. NONE of them are surviving. And even though we know it might not be too bad, it’s still absolutely horrific for Emma to watch the man she loved be possessed by a hive mind that’s the complete opposite of his personality. It literally is inevitable, that’s what makes it such good horror.
On my first watch I thought Paul wasn't infected but had just found an appreciation for music in 'Let It Out' especially with lines like "this is the life that I chose" and "I'm still the man you trust" it wasn't until everyone else started coming out I realised he was probably infected; I gained hope when he said "What if the only choice is you had to sing to survive" thinking he is only doing it to not die and then when the reprise of other songs came in with much more aggressive and blunt lyrics I accepted he was gone, every other watch I've just enjoyed watching the chaos ensue
Emma knew that Paul wasn't there for "Show Stoppin' Number" so her fear has reached it's limit when he starts singing that song. She probably was hoping that Paul was only singing to survive (foreshadowed in the lyrics. Also because every other song she was there with Paul or didn't know the song) but then when they start singing, she realises he has fallen to the infection (ig you could call it that) Genius! I love this musical so damn much! :D

Honestly Idk what the cast and crew have said on social media about this, but my head cannon is Paul is faking it because a lot of the unique lyrics are him insisting he's the one to turn Emma and not anyone else, stating it's inevitable that they have to sing to survive, and then a majority of the lyrics are basically in the same tune as all the musical numbers Paul is present for and would know well enough to play along with the hivemind. Even show stopping number because it's revealed Paul is waiting in the wings for the Professor to get carried away before he rescues Emma and Ted.

I don't think so. Look at his eyes, they're completely disfocused, just like in Let it Out. He has no reason to be faking it, since many of the others don't have the same effect: it's a unique property for him.
Beyond that, when he sings, "You had to sing to survive," he backs away and doesn't look at Emma.

Adam Zheng Yes as Paris states, it's more something I like to think about they may or may not come to fruition in the actual, cannotical universe. But I feel there's a lot of different ways to interpret this final scene as it is left with a lot of ambiguousness. I believe it was initially planned for Jaime's military character to be on stage and attacked by the nurse to l turned, but that was cut as you can see for something more simplistic with her coffee boss costume coming out instead. I also feel its important to note that your attention to his eyes is definitely interesting, but we also never see Paul get turned. His musical outburst is a result of being near the meteor, not through infection from the rest of the hive, and we never truly know if his attempt to blow up the meteor succeeded or not. It's also implied by the nurse's presence that the hospital is also infected by the hive, so there's literally just a lot to unpack for any real interpretation you want to gather from it. I like to think that Paul's inherent distaste for Musicals makes him resistant and perhaps immune to the hive that even if it can manage to infect him, he can defy it and break free. But obviously he can't if he's the only one he can trust to revolt.

I had an idea, what if Paul is partially controlled by the aliens?
He knows the choreography and songs cuz he is being controlled by the hive but still underneath all of that he is still Paul but he cannot speak normally and he sings to speak cuz there's multiple times the aliens don't have a strong connection to the individual, so in one of those moments Paul is still there but unable to not sing, basically living torture but is the only way he could survive, like he says it a lot of times in the song

I know I'm a bit late (4 years) but I have a theory about Emma not dying. I hands down think Paul's infected ;-; and when he sings a part of him is Pokey, which made me wonder. Paul/Pokey sings: "Or I might be inclined to - plant my seed.", and Pokey is Wiggly's brother and Wiggly tries to become human or at least to gain a human form by getting born into this world. I think Paul became the new "center" of the hive after destroying the meteor and therefore has kind of the same effect as a Wigglydoll. Maybe the hive in reality was out for Emma, so that she could eventually give birth to the human incarnation of Pokey, and since Pokey do need to become "human" I think it's a human who needs to give birth to him. So that is why I think they didn't kill her, I mean they could as well have done it. What do you guys think?
