@@squirec1 i believe it was post Fecal Matter demos... When they were cycling through names like Pen Cap Chew and Ted Ed Fred before they settled on Nirvana when Kurt suggested it...
@@squirec1 also the song was This is based partly on a family who kept their kids locked up in the attic of their house in the band's hometown of Aberdeen. Kurt Cobain wrote the song after reading the story in the news. In a 1989 interview, he explained he actually knew one of the siblings: "His brother and sister were locked in a house and abused by their parents for years. They were treated as dogs for the first five or six years of their lives."
The Alice in Chains comparisons are understandable, but it's important to remember one thing. This song is from nirvana's bleach record. It was written by Kurt in 1988, and recorded in 1989. While Alice in Chains did exist at the time, they hadn't transitioned yet to their more grunge sound. They were still much more of an 80s metal-ish band in their early days. This song is reminiscent of a sound Alice in Chains would adopt much later on, after breaking through to the mainstream.
This was recorded Jan. 23 1988 at Nirvana's first demo (the "Dale Demo"), at Reciprocal Studios, so it was almost-certainly written sometime in 1987. They attempted to record it with Chad Channing during the Bleach sessions in December 1988/early Jan 1989 but could not get a performance they were happy with, so they included this version from the Dale Demo on Bleach. So it actually dates even earlier than you have it, by a year. Just pointing that out to enhance/affirm your original point: this track is in no way influenced by Alice in Chains. If anything it is influenced by the Melvins.
ruclips.net/video/-kyryWXko84/видео.html This is them performing this record in January of 1988. So it was definitely written in 87. This is a great performance that many haven't seen. Paper cuts starts at 938. Enjoy. 🤟
Heaviest song i have heard. No black metal, death metal is heavier. Its so natural dark that make tickles Visceral voice... Its crazy thinking how good and different was nirvana
Glad you liked Paper Cuts :) It's a good example of Nirvana's weird, dark and experimental songs. Also I love Kurt's screams in this. So raw and intense.
Please note that Kurt did not follow any musical rules, he did not know cords or read music. He is pure talent. there were hardly any left handed guitars, he had to construct them in the early days and used old equipment from the pawn shop to get certain sounds. This album cost $600 to produce thru sound pop and it’s genius. He did not bite off Alice & Chains. In Seattle many bands inspired each other. However, this album is produced as a whole entity. Each song perfectly follows the other almost like a symphony.
That's Dale Crover from the Melvins on the drums. He played on Nirvana's ten-song demo recorded on January 23, 1988 at Reciprocal Recording Studios in Seattle. Three of those songs ended up on Bleach ("Paper Cuts", "Floyd the Barber" and "Downer") while another four are on the album Incesticide ("Beeswax", "Hairspray Queen", "Mexican Seafood" and "Aero Zeppelin"). "Downer" is also on Incesticide and another two songs were released on the 'With the Lights Out' box set ("If You Must" and "Pen Cap Chew"). That leaves one song -- "Spank Thru" which hasn't been officially released. Live versions have been released and a performance recorded at the same studio months later with Chad Channing on drums was released on the Sup Pop 200 compilation album which came out in December 1988. I have the whole ten-song demo on one of the many Nirvana imported bootleg cds I bought back in the 90s and of course it's up on youtube.
"The lady I feel maternal love for cannot look me in the eyes. But I see hers, and they are blue and they cut, and twist, and lacerate." A song about an abused child locked away in a dungeon. One of Kurt's darkest songs. And the audio sounds are meant to be a disturbing as the content.
I use Apple Music & a lot of the times the lyrics accompany the songs & with this song (I shit you not) they have ‘masturbate’ in place of ‘lacerate’ 😀😄😅😂
Whoa I never thought of Alice in Chains when hearing that riff, but now that you point it out it totally sounds like a Jerry Cantrell riff. Even has some dark sounding harmony vocals over it. There are a bunch of tracks on Bleach like that. Now that I think about it, I wonder if AIC was influenced at all by the Bleach album considering it came out 1 year before Facelift.
If you like this check out anything else from the same session, it's all pretty great and in this weirdly-catchy-but-heavy style. Hairspray Queen, Mexican Seafood, If You Must... it's all good.
I'd love a lounge act review. Blew live is fantastic. School or negative creep I think be up your ally. Enjoy the less popular Nirvana reviews. They're my favorite from my favorite group
This song in particular is by far my favorite from Bleach and in my personal opinion is the proper song that defines the sound of Grunge. Song still gives me goose bumps especially when it hits the chorus
Great breakdown as usual dh. This is one of those songs that is intended to make you feel uneasy, on edge. Would recommend spank thru, aneurysm, and milk it.... kind of all have similar elements.
That bit does sound like alice in chains, but when alice in chain do it, it sounds like slayer. The riff is similar to the acoustic bit in seasons in the abyss. Also, alice in chains used feedback in a similar way to slayer.
Don't take it wrong, but for once I completely agree with you on this one. I would add the voice performance. That shit isn't easy to sing, but Kurt delivers in a way I don't think most could.
I am always here for your Nirvana reactions. Great one here and definitely an interesting pick. If you really like this song, I think you would really like/find this whole album interesting.
