The fist one, the "investigative journalist" isn't really a journalist (she's a RUclipsr) and she wasn't there to investigate anything. She was purposefully being intrusive confrontational to other beachgoers in order to film the confrontations for her RUclips channel. When the police eventually showed up, they told her that even though it's a public beach, other people have the right to enjoy the beach without being harassed, and made her leave the area. That was a much more "Karen" situation, where she kept claiming that she was a journalist and that she was going to sue the police because they stopped her from harassing other people in public.

if she was actually "harassing" them, i agree. if she was just filming the beach and people/kids happened to be there, then too bad. there's no expectation of privacy in public, it's been tried in the supreme court and backed up, you can film freely in public.
however, if you're being an a-hole about it, then i'm gonna knock your camera in the sand.

As a metal fan, I do not typically enjoy other people's music at the beach and wish they would all use ear buds. I also realize that me listening to my music without headphones would bother other people around me, so I don't. I mostly listen to my music in the car, at home, or with ear buds.

Although I don't do this, and also hate it, some people do like to party at the beach and all be listening to the same music and hang out and dance and talk. I get it, and if someone came over, nicely, and asked if they could turn it down a little I think that they should. I do think though, some people are annoying, want to live their life how they want to, and they don't care what anyone else thinks, and to me, it's just easier to move away from them than start a fight, but maybe that's what makes me a non-Karen...

I was at the beach in the Caribbean back when I was 28 with my husband (30) and his family when a wild Karen walked up to me and my husband. She felt compelled to tell my husband how disgusting he was for "kissing a teenager". I looked young but I didn't think I could pass as a teenager. She was even trying to pull me away to "protect me from the pedophile." The police got called and I ended up showing the police my license which clearly showed that I was 28. She huffed and, of course, declared that my license had to be fake. That was 10 years ago and we still joke that he robbed the non-existent cradle.

The thing with fireworks for me, is that they literally scare animals to death. One of my friends has to give her dog sedatives on new years even and sit at home with the dog the entire night because of the fireworks. And it's not even that, that is the biggest problem, it's when people shoot fireworks for WEEKS before and after. There are also a lot of people with anxiety and PTSD that can react really bad to the sounds.... @@JaseekaRawr From my experience, I see fishers at the pier and around it but not just on the public beach where swimmers are. There can be a lot of issues at least from where I've been. People aren't expecting it and can't see the lures all the time if they're swimming, making it more likely the waves can carry the line and someone can get caught in the hook which is really not good. Even if it didn't, releasing the fish in itself isn't bad but around swimmers a bleeding fish can attract sharks. Where I've been, I've seen hammerheads and makos and bulls and tons of species (even some non aggressive ones) which can be a big deal for anyone. Like I'd really like to not get a shark bite because someone was inconsiderate? At PCB in FL where I've been, there's a fishing pier. People do swim around there, but it's very much at your own risk for obvious reasons and imo you can't tell someone not to fish when that's what the area is for. But in a place where no one else is fishing, it can become a serious hazard. IMO be considerate of others? If I was fishing in an area no one expected me to and it attracted a shark that bit someone, that would be awful. I wouldn't want to do that to someone nor would I want it done to me or my loved ones. Im sure different areas have different accessibility for those things, but I'd just hope people take a look at their surroundings and make a proper judgement call.

Even if I go to an remote and quite area without many people around and am just chilling quietly, there'll be that one family that comes up with their kids there and they're all shouting and playing music and basically my quiet environment is destroyed. So I again get up and hope not another comes in their place. Because of the "public place" argument, the majority of them decides if the particular situation is normal or not.

It is creepy to be circling the kids and filming them in that way and I would tell her to stop too. However, she really doesn’t have to. The US Supreme Court ruled, several years ago, that you have no expectation of privacy when you’re in a public space and there was no provision made regarding age. So, creepy or not, the law is actually on her side because no one needs your permission to take video of you in public and there’s nothing you can do about it. You can ask them nicely not to but, it’s up to them whether or not they comply. Your only recourse is to leave the area.

Charlotte, I know you’re being silly, but my husband has asthma and vapes still can trigger it. We were one time at a hiking trail, and a guy was vaping, and we just quietly went around him to avoid it. He got aggressive out of literally nowhere, and popped off that we were being over dramatic about his vape. We hadn’t said a word. Just moved around.
He followed us and was blowing the vapor/smoke toward us on purpose. :( I ended up confronting him just so my partner could get to the end of the trail and create a berth. Luckily a trail attendant showed up moments later, saw the dude screaming at me, and made him leave.

We do not know if that was a no smoking beach which usually vaping is included, or if possibly they were asked nicely to move and they insisted on getting closer. But even if that’s not the case and it’s as casual as the video showed Charlotte‘s response had a different scenario entirely. Charlotte stated that she was “not harming anybody by vaping outside the building.“ when individuals like this person‘s partner with asthma or individuals like myself with environmental allergies that respond with asthmatic symptoms are harmed by individuals who are vaping right outside of establishments or public locations. And if somebody walks up and asks if they could move a little bit further away from the door that’s not them being a Karen it’s literally them asking to give space for those who literally won’t be able to breathe when passing because “who is it harming“. people are allowed to do what they want in public to a degree. And no one can stop someone from smoking or vaping outside. But that doesn’t mean others around those who choose to smoke or Vape aren’t affected negatively.

My point of being in a large open space that allows smoking means you are taking that risk (otherwise it is illegal for them to smoke there and the cops can be called). My point stands, you take risks going into public and are responsible for avoiding uncomfortable or unhealthy situations.

I was trying to point out nuances in the conversation about this especially since Your comment felt as though it could be interpreted unintentionally as shrugging off the complaint of the original Commentor Who could’ve been commenting on the videos situation on the beach or by Charlotte‘s comment of “who is it harming“, which the person could’ve been explaining it was harming people like their partner with asthmatic symptoms. Yes people in public can smoke and have pets in public locations where that is allowed. And yes there is a limit on how far away somebody can be from a doorway when smoking or vaping. The problem with that is that many people don’t follow those rules and people who Vape and say that “it’s not smoking therefore it’s fine“ not realizing that it can cause the same allergic reactions. I am sorry once again for any confusion. Your comment did bring up the reasonable point that we cannot control others actions in public locations when they are not against law, and on that point I agree. And so a few times after some difficult encounters, yes I called the police on them. And yes, they did get fined. Now everyone wears masks, guess that is Karma for you.

This year I found out quite by accident that the cut off for fireworks outside of the 4th in WA & OR is 10 pm so I can understand being a little annoyed trying to get sleep so you can enjoy your 4th of July & being kept up all night by fireworks. My son's dad was going to pick him up on the 4th so we got fireworks to light off on the 3rd, we live in a very tiny town that is very safe so I was a little shocked when we came outside to find two police officers across the rd talking by their cruisers. My son wanting to be respectful walked over & asked if it was ok if he set off his fireworks, both officers walked over & explained that in WA & most of OR the cut off time outside the 4th was 10 pm but wanted to see what we had. I showed them it was just a pack of kids fireworks & they were like oh we really only enforce that rule for the big ones or the really loud screaming fireworks so you can set these off. I explained that my son would be at his dad's the following evening which was why we were out on the 3rd & they were so cool about saying "well this is your time for fun fireworks isn't it" and asked if they could join us for a few minutes. They would block the wind so my son could use the safety lighter & when the wicks on a few were very short & my son was a little nervous they asked if he wanted them to light them which he said yes thank you & handed over the lighter & then they did some confetti poppers with us. Police in our town are very different from a lot of communities, they do enforce laws of course but silly stuff that doesn't hurt anyone they tend to just let go especially if you're polite about it or ask first.

A group let their kids run around screaming left it because my group and I were far enough but next to the koi pond. These kids went outside grabbed rocks and were throwing them at the fish at the table next to us when the servers were gone. Parents were laughing at it. I spoke up and said are those rocks? Kids said no and proceeded to throw more and get another round. I raised my voice again - didn’t yell but loud enough staff and the family could hear at the closing restaurant and the parents gave me a dirty look and called me a nosey bitch for saying anything. I would speak up again.

Fireworks are very stressful to people with sensory issues and PTSD, as well as to wildlife. They also can risk causing forest fires, such as in Oregon during the dry season. They are illegal for a good reason. I'd say it's good to call the police because you are doing most of the people and wildlife in the area a favor. And obviously confronting them will likely not be successful.

So we try to respect the anglers’ spaces. And if they brush off a greeting, they’re playing with a fish, or they were taught to keep quiet to “not scare the fish” when they were young’uns. The potential for another person getting harmed is a valid concern. Now just at the entrance is bad, there is no alternative route. On the beach, not so bad unless the vapor persons came later and did not consider the others.

It may be allowed, but is it necessary, or appropriate? Especially when there are children around, you should be able to let your kid run around in the sand without worrying if footage will end up online and abused. I would never be aggressive about it though, just kindly ask them to film in a direction where other people aren’t visible. It’s not hard to be nice.
