The love child of crime noir and heroic bloodshed.
For a Finnish guy (like me) Remedy has always been a big influencer in the gaming industry. They were the pioneers of making Finland and our games well known around the world, years before Angry Birds etc. In the beginning of the 2000's when Max Payne games were selling well around the world, we (still little kids at the time) made sure that every one of us had those great games to play. And we talked about them every day during school. We were so proud that a Finnish company could make games so great :D Those were the times, the good old days for the kids from 90's! :D
Sadly those glory days of finnish games are now behind and we're left with nothing but shitty mobile games ;_;
Max Payne 2 oli kyllä parasta parhautta
"Don't answer that, a rhetorical question."
Your name brings me pain
Sad to hear that Jose
Go watch the last Black Panthaa video...
Oh and by the way
Midnight club still cancelled soz
Yes that was a fake laugh you jerk
Hey, I keep seeing you around these parts.
4:33 I'm pretty sure the Valkyr-drug, the Ragnarök-club and the Aesir corporation are references to Norse mythology and not Greek.
Yeah I thought it was weird he said Greek, considering Greek mythology is generally very well known and involves figures like Zues, Poseidon, Athena, etc.
max payne later references the minotaur and the labyrinth, chiron and the river styx which are all greek mythos
100% norse.
Yeah I laughed out loud when he said that.
Yeah!
one of my favourite games. The storyline was great, spooky and lonely environment. Bloody hell storytelling and great voice actors. I've replayed this game so much
Max Payne is the reason I love 3rd person shooters.
Pixelated Dreams me to
Yeah it was revolutionary. For me it was GTA 3 that made me love 3rd person shooters.
For me it was the OG Battlefront II and Mercenaries Playground of Destruction that made me love 3rd person shooters. They had no cover system, instead projectiles traveled "slowly" (well compared to other games) allowing you to dodge shots even if they were already heading towards you. It's a shame chest high walls took over the genre, I really liked that run-in-gun style of gameplay.
I personally hate 3rd person shooters, but love max payne :D
There is a quicksave option though, so no need for browsing trough menus. But generally, the review is spot on. I wouldn't complain about the graphics though. To me they look better than most games that came out even a year or two after this one. Textures are surprisingly sharp, and level design, as well as enemies, is fairly good.. again comparing to games from that era. Remember how GTA III had disjointed looking NPCs, same as Morrowind that came even later, nad Mafia didn't look as sharp as this game either (to compared to just a few). I've actually been playing the game in the last few weeks, just finished the secret base self-destructing level few minutes ago.
Dunno if someone else mentioned it, but there is a third party widescreen fix for Max Payne and it's sequel, as well as other older games that lack proper widescreen support. Give "thirteenag" a search seeing as you plan on reviewing MP2. Great review btw, keep it comming.
Or "fixitall" for steam version.
Or you can play in 1440x1080 with black bars its looks pretty good and game was made to work in 4:3
Still till this day does this game hold up!
Indeed!
It more than holds up. I've actually been playing it for the last few weeks and I can say it can teach lessons to many new games. The only thing really lacking is cover system which simply wasn't a thing in any game back in those days.
the only thing I hate about this game is that bullets seem to travel wayy too slow, you have to aim ahead of moving enemies at point blank range which is ridiculous, also sometimes enemies are just bullet sponges
@@Tipperito I'm one year later, but check the Max Payne mod collection (Accuracy, Camera, More) mod. It gives you the option to increase the projectile speed among other things if you wish, like gun accuracy, shotgun spread and a different camera angle. And you are right, the projectile speed, alongside the accuracy mod, completly improve the experience.
This is a game where you help Sam Lake kill his mother after she kills his family and tries to kill him many times.
Im happy to see that you are doing Max Payne! One of the best games ever made. Continue the great work!
Here's a suggestion for a review - The Getaway (PS2 exclusive). Essentially a playable British Gangster Film with an incredibly realistic recreation of Central London.
But the second part, the first one is not really made for having fun. Especially driving in the city with the super police.
This was an awesome game, i loved how i finished the first part i thought the game was done, then you start all over, i was mind blown :D The leaning mechanic to gather health was funny :D
I love this game. I remember sneaking into my big brother's room to play his PS2 back when I was younger.
I remember when my sister snuck into my room to use my laptop and spilled water on it. I remember killing her
Only 34k subs? This is ridiculous. Tier 1 content my dude, keep the good work.
Love the video and your channel, just wanted to add that the game has Norse mythology not Greek. Love your reviews though!
Great video as always! I'd love to see a midnight club 2 or total overdose vid too
I got stuck on that part with the baseball bat as a kid lol glad I’m not the only one who had trouble with it.
I remember playing "Max Payne" when I was younger and thinking the hardest difficulty was impossible after I read the player has limited saves per level and I literally had to save after every enemy or group I killed in order to progress on the *lowest* difficulty. But since you have to beat the game on each difficulty to unlock the next one, after I got through the game twice I actually decided to take on the highest difficulty *without using bullet-time* - and I actually pulled it off, usually saving only 3 to 5 times per level. Tho, honestly, the main reason I pulled it off was 'cause I realized how abusable side-jumping around the enemies was. XD
I know right? That side-roll is the most powerful thing you had in the game imo
Protip: Check the controls menu before playing a game. Quicksave/load and the separate shoot dodge/bullet time controls are incredibly useful here.
I remember having 20 bucks as a kid to spend on a game and Wal Mart employee said kid youd want this. When I got home I realized how right he was. And with me being 11 and him just telling me it's awesome and letting me pay for it without a parent around I felt like a bada$$.
Great day indeed, now this review is here! Been waiting for this one
The game that introduced me to my favourite band. Poets of the fall. The end credits (Late Goodbye) was incredible.
ion know why yo voice be soothing me like it does but yeah good video
Max Payne has to be one of my top favorite games
Dropped by here after hearing they're making a remake.
Good work as always, love your videos.. 💯
I always fancy Max Payne for it's details. I love how a game from 2001 could be great as this
That "Boss Fight" at the end was a payne in the ass
*Max Payne 1 was THE BEST in the series- even just on the writing alone!!!*
I was 11 when this came out, had a sick PC with max graphics and dude was this a marvel!
Always thought it was neat how game doesn't have a difficulty setting but adapts to how good or bad you are and your play style as you progress. I hadn't heard of that back then until this game.
It does have a difficulty setting.
Max Payne 3 was the first I played in the series, and then I went for the iOS port of this game, and I enjoyed the hell out of it.
Max Panye = John McClane
Dark Justice = Dick Justice
One of my favorite games of all time. Great vid as always colourshed!
I live for these reviews!
ahhh one of my favorite games from one of my favorite franchises. I love them all equally even Max payne 3
“I was in a computer game 🤦🏻” best part
oh boy, you're gonna fuckin love Max Payne 3 then, one of the best 3rd person gunplay mechanics imo, better than the GTA games
I actually played the game for the first time with max payne mobile but I have the original Xbox version now
Max looks so silly in the first game. Having that deep depressive voice and a smurk on his face always makes me laugh to this day. Haven't completed the first, but played the hell out of 2 and 3.
Max payne 3's gunplay is easily the most satisfying of any rockstar game, or at least the ones with modern weapons.
Red dead and it's lever action rifles are on another level.
This is very true they definitely need to remaster max Payne 3 and reboot the online the kill cams that show the mechanics of the gun in action are to die for
@@tylercouture216 the killshots were AWESOME.
Max paybe 3 was the prototype for the current engine, too.
GTA 4's engine really only went on to help with making the first red dead remption.
Max paybe 3 on the other hand, pionered the graphics engine used in every subsequent game so far after it.
Franklins black skin glistens the same way that Serano slumlord guys does lol so nuff said.
The games just run a little smother and control a bit less tightly as time goes on, but the in game assets and tectures tend to stay the same.
Shinny blood glossy black men are the current way to tell nothing is changing but the gameplay and size of game
I remember when I was in year 6 I used a bunch of quotes from max Payne in a paragraph and I got a really good score 💀💀
About to finish today and can say that most of the things are so true
"Don't ever cross a man with nothing to loose" MAX PAYNE!!
The graphic-novel cutscenes are one of the best aspects of the game
do you plan to review medievil series for ps1??
If anyone wants to play this, you are impervious to bullets while dodging. Not very realistic but I remember just spamming the dodge button through the whole game. That's how you avoid getting shot instantly as soon as you enter a room. You don't even really need to use bullet time as long as you're good with the dodge button.
Hey ColorShed, really love your work, especially on your GT Series but also all of the others, even finding a gem I didn't know of before, Bully, just wanted to know if you will also take a shot at GT Sport?
I'm glad Max Payne aged very well.
I really don't remember finding this game THAT hard back when I played it on PS2. Tricky, sure, but not super difficult. Perhaps the PC version is more difficult? I think I will have to pick it up on steam.
Yeah I got it on Xbox when I was 8 and beat it fairly quickly
It might be because it was the first time I ever played it, and it's about trial-and-error so playing it more than once is a lot easier because you know where the enemies are in advance...
PS2 had Auto aim and more checkpoints
I think it has some kind of an auto-adjusting difficulty mechanic built into it, where it gives you a break if you struggle to get through a certain area and makes the enemies more dangerous if you're cruising through. But the difficulty kind of fits the theme and makes it more realistic when the enemies are a real threat all the time. I mean, you wouldn't expect to survive entering a room with 2-3 people with guns waiting for you in real life, would you?
@@romaliop the game featured an adaptive difficulty on all systems
8:06 Have you tried iOS port? iOS 13 is about to support Xbox controller, I'm thinking about picking this one up on App Store.
Oh and Total Overdose is one you should do aswell
I don't think I see you using the right-click bullet time option at all during your gameplay footage. That makes the game way harder.
You can get this game on android to, it works well but hard to control on touch screen.
Keep up the good work for us fans.
Always killing it 👍👍
So Max Payne had bullet time in mind before The Matrix popularised it?
I thought The Matrix inspired that part in it's development, even if the movie released in 1999 and MP at 2001 (though their development years would clash from 1997-2001 I assume).
Where did you take the Sam Lake quote from?
4:29
The Maltese Falcon
Hard Boiled
and
The Lord of the Rings
Respectively....
and today we have like 3 games to choose from.
14:00 iirc you can quick save and load with the Function keys guess it was F5 to save and like F7 or F9 to load
I love this game but I hate that blood line level makes me rage every time
There’s no challenges. Those are difficulty levels
Why was Max given that comical shit-eating grin in-game? I always found it contradicted the overall theme of the game
@wee bastard78 also the billboards and signs are hilarious sometimes better than gtas fake ads
Just beat the game. Awsome review !
So you checked out Gameboy advance version of the game but not the mobile one, why?
Great job as usual, but I have to say that it's impossible to read a quote and listen to what you are saying at the same time since you are not actually reading the quote.
Man, I loved Max Payne 1 and 2.
Why not using quick save?
At the max difficulty, I heard that you have a limited number of quick save.
Its 3 if I'm not mistaken
Love the game series and storyline. Hate the movie bcuz Marky Mark was main character made it look cheesy; shouda been JOHN CENA.
STRANGLEHOLD next if you like bullet time.
Any chance a review for The Warriors is on the horizon?
I barely used bullet time until the last mission
the roll....
use the roll
Amazing content my friend .. Keep going
So when is Max Payne 2 review coming out?
If you can handle the touch controls or have a Bluetooth controller there's a mobile version that's a port of the PC version and plays and looks great.
Edit: the painkillers... This game might be the origin of the opioid epidemic in America, you know they say kids copy what they see in games lol
uh you know theres quick saving & loading?
Was waiting for this
Double action boogaloo on steam. Slo mo fun.
Can anyone tell me if the super jump still works? I did it once by accident and found out about the super jump but after tirelessly trying for A whole 2 minutes, I'm questioning if its possible on the ps4.
You really need to make a review of the Flatout or Burnout series
BEST THIRD PERSON SHOOTER GAME
I played it on normal difficulty back then and I don't remember it having so cheap death spots...
I recomend to play on an older version of Windows because on the older software is the enemy placement is better or something
Shout out to ColourShed from Armenia 🇦🇲
Please keep the original aspect ratio, all the 4:3 -> 16:9 stretch looks so weird.
I agree there is fix it all patch that fixes all problems stretch, sound and unlimited fps but i actually remove widescreen fix after i install fix it all patch and i play in 1440x1080 call me crazy but i think that old games looks beter in 4:3 even if they not stretch in 16:9 and 4:3 add to nostalgia a bit
Finally
Yes, the levels look a little bit empty and the faces look weird BUT the textures were very high resolution at that time and the particle effects were impressive too.
Yes, it's a little bit trial and error...but that's why it has a quick save and load system.
Max Payne 1 & 2 are really good...part 3 was...okay
All of them were great 3 was magnificent also max Payne 3 is the foundation for gta5 and red dead redemption 2 and gta4s first cousin
Max Payne? Oh, you mean Max Heat.
I played the mobile version and shooting was pretty accurate
"mirrorS arE morE fuN thaN televisioN!"
I beat this game on a Mac using the arrow keys.
do a review on F.E.A.R 2005
Heellllllllllllll yea watched a play through a in like 2016
@heman it really was I love that game I work for a moving company a couple years ago and this lady literally had a copy of fear for her PC it was outdated and everything but it was so cool to see still haven't played it till this day
This game is art
