Huge Shoutout to ya Rich, my grandpa passed away when i was 7 leaving grandma to raise us 4 kids on her own, didnt have anyone to take me or teach me Ive held onto the old man's tackle ever since, not knowing proper equipment setups and fish behaviour for many years until stumbling upon your channel. you have taught me countless tips, advice and almanacs within the days of watching than I have in 18 years of fishing. I'm always digging for worms and NEVER would have THUNK! if you find yourself this far north in the MN boundary waters, you've got yourself a free weekend at the lodge on Sagana Lake
As young as 7 yrs. old (I am 71 now), I was introduced to "rattling" up worms. We always used a sharpened section of a broom about 2 1/2 ft. long with notches cut along the length about 2 inches apart. We used another section of the broom handle to run it up and down the section with the notches after stabbing it into the ground. We always went for night crawlers. It worked wonders. However, one must be careful because, occasionally, it would also being small snakes up as well. Some of which could be venomous.
@@barrykime5580 If you did it the way I described and it didn't work, then you were probably in an area where there were no night crawlers to begin with.
This method only works in north america where a certain mule species is living. European worms are't used to such mule frequencies, which a "grunting stick" tries to imitate. They just ignore it, because they do not sense any danger for their lives. No joke.
When we were kids, we’d drive a pitchfork straight into the ground (right in our back yard) and pull back on the handle and let go. We’d do this several times. It would vibrate and drive the worms up too. If memory serves me right, we’d do this in the evening to collect our bait for the next day. Something else I need to share with the grandkids. Thanks for the memories, Richard.
Dang Richard Gene your knowledge about live bait and how to find it wow! Impressive brother. Country folks can survive.Everyone stay well and good fishin to all and may God bless...
A length of rope with knots every inch or so, worked around that sapling works pretty good to bring the worms up and no need to cut it down. Armadillo hole.
"Awe Fiddlesticks!" 😀 I had to say it, a new meaning for the phrase. Thank you for the presentation! 👍 I do believe, and agree worms are the best over fish bait, for trout as well.
Although I really enjoy all your videos Mr. Richard, I give this video a rating of 5 "Woos" for how especially enjoyable it is. Keep up the good work sir, you have a lot of folks like me that really like what you're doing.
I visualized the poor guy thinking he really scored when he found it in the cupboard and headed off to the woods.....then he comes home and puts 'em in the fridge and BAM! Back on the beans and cornbread..NO FISH FRY TONIGHT
Nice trick. I'm in NWGA. I use what I call a worm blanket. I have an old knitted wool blanket. What I do on state property is clear out a spot to the dirt about 3 square feet. Lay that blanket down. Then I dump ten gallons of water on it. It'll get you a stash like that I guess they think it's flooding. I do that when I'm trout fishing about five or ten feet from the creek. They try to get through the blanket but can't do they all just accommodate there after 30 minutes to an hour. Good handfuls like what you got. Less work. All you need is the blanket and a shopping bag. Mine is just an old thrift store 50 cent throw. Worm blanket 😊 I scoop the water up in a shopping bag. Get my quota on ice and cleaned. I use the trout eyeballs for quota the next day and I do that by using the heads in a crawfish trap to keep the crayfish away from the trout. I keep the crayfish too 😁 as long as you dump water on that blanket they'll wiggle around under it and try to surface. I figured that trick out on an accident at stamp creek WMA years ago. I had sat on it next to the fire pit and it came a storm during the night. I was aggravated about me forgetting about my blanket until I found 40 or so worms stuck to it and even more on the dirt. Ever since then it's been my worm blanket. I still sit on it by the fire and soak it before I hit the sack. Works every time. If it ain't gonna rain I soak the area with about 15 bagfulls of water. Get up before sunrise, collect em, hang the blanket to dry. Eat breakfast. Do it again 😉 thanks for sharing your trick. I shared mine in return which isn't illegal on public land 😊 have a great day!
Sir your a genius. Thank you for the tips. I can never find enough worms. This will help. I'm new to your channel and you know more than most people. Thank you again.
I do it with a stake about 14" long drive it in the ground take a brick and rub it across top it will vibrate and I've had them jump up out of the ground my grand dad showed me showed me.
We used to just stomp on the ground, beat on a tree, or drive a stake into the ground and then rub another stick up and down the side to get the worms to come up. Great video!
Awesome trick for getting the worms up! Never even heard of that one!!! My grandma use to have me drive 2 chunks of re-bar into the ground about 10' apart then hook one up to the negative lead on an extension cord and the other on to the positive lead. Plug in the cord and wait about 10 minutes and they will all shoot up out of the ground! (unplug it first before the gathering begins!)
Your so awesome Richard, thank you for sharing your tips and tricks with us, we appreciate you very much! And will always be excited for what's next, thank you for everything you do!!
When you started explorin that den in the ground , big smile came over me . I truly enjoy trompin thru the woods . I like to fish but catchin bait is fun too . Lookin for shrooms , ginseng , sassafras , there's no end to the useful bounty you can find . And if you don't find what your after that day , you had a stress free get together with nature . Ya can't lose .
You can also drive a piece of rebar into the ground tap on it with hammer and get the same results. Thanks for your terrific fishing knowledge Richard Gene.
What's up Machine! You always deliver a new technique I haven't heard of or seen on youtube. Or oldtimers that I know. Cutting and using a saw on top of a living sapling is the simplest and best technique to bring up worms I've seen. Cutting and carving a fiddler stick. electric probes , dish soap at night, They all may work. But I haven't seen huge earthworms like yours. You're the man.
Man this brings back memories. Grew up in Huntsville and moved to Tn. All kinda places to go fiddling. Also, I kept looking for ginseng in your video lol
Thanks for sharing this trick! In South MS, earthworms are also abundant, and much better bait than store-bought. But when I want to use them, I end up devoting a full day to gather enough for one good night of fishing. I'll try this trick next, for sure!
Up here in PA we always called them Big one “night crawlers” On a summer evening they come up into the yard grass to mate. Y’all have to be really quiet sneaking up on em with a flashlight & grab em really quick. The light spooks em So ya have to be quick! Us kids used catch a couple hundred of before bedtime Friday night to go fishing Saturday morning
Hey neighbor we would go out as kids in the spring and do the same thing mainly in rain storms and we'd use a red light so the worms didn't spook as much harder to see them but got enough in a few nights to stock up for dad and us four boys to fish most of the year
Not only did you teach us how to get worms, but you taught a lot of folks the meaning of the word “stob”. A lot of folks, especially outside of the Appalachians, don’t know that word anymore!
I ran over a sapling that had been cut off it poked a hole in my side wall my buddy told me I ran over a stob I asked him what was a stob he said well it stobbed your tire
I love your channel. I am an angler as well, but still I love learning things from others to help me be successful. I have a very very close friend who lives in Tuscombia Alabama. Thanks for all the great videos and tips.
Fiddle Worms!!! Saw=Bow Stump=Fiddle about mid June, Yes Sir! Thnx, Gene I really enjoy your channel! I have told people about this and most of them thought it was just BS! LoL! I've taken a few folks out and showed em! Fun stuff! Keep posting em!!! 🎓🌎✔😷
When we were kids we used to take ole leaf spring and grunt it across top of a piece wood. Great time. Hope some of you dads take your kids in the woods and try this. I never have forgotten those times.
I live in scottsboro, AL always looking for new places to fish. Thought it was real cool to see a video about fiddle worms lol I’m just glad I’m not the only country guy walking around in the woods fiddling for worms
This looks helpful Richard. I always brought a water spray bottle and spray water spray under logs and rocks let it sit 5 minutes go back and collect nice nightcrawlers. Id collect over a dozen. Id put a 1/4 inch of soil wet it lightly with spray bottle and put worms in moist soil in my container. If i was out from 4pm to 1030 id fill 2 containers a 1/4 with moist soil. Lift logs and rocks spray and wait 5 to 10 minutes and fill 2 containers with 18 worms each container. Id collect big worms and moderate size worms to catch baitfish to chunk or use live. 😊❤
We appreciate you sir you don't know how much this will save me hundreds of dollars a year worms is way too expensive now especially to a young boy or young lady trying to go out there and catch a few and almost ain't right but this right here will get a young person out there on the water catching them a few for the supper table you are giving back brother I appreciate you God bless

You taught me something new today. I put boards out on my yard and when I get ready to fish I just turn them over and find plenty of worms. Now let's go catch a catfish. Woo
You are a good man for sharing your knowledge brother Richard, Thank you! i love it when i see men that look older but they still act as giddy/excited as a little boy. love it man. stay young!
Richard Gene, You’re a fishing GENIUS! I take some of your tricks and apply it to fishing. We really appreciate you! Woooo!
Indeed we do!

I normally sprinkle some garlic powder on mines and let them marinate in my cooler overnight on some ice and mealworms too! Good catches!!

Would para cord work with that? It’s only like 1/4” thick
