- Roll Northumbria - The Dreadnoughts (Cover) by Seth Staton Watkins
Written by Nicholas Smythe for Canadian Cider Punk band The Dreadnoughts for their album Into The North, Roll Northumbria is an epic modern folk song in the traditional sea shanty style. I had this one requested a few times on TikTok and RUclips and I was happy to oblige. I hope you enjoy my rendition of Roll Northumbria.

Lyrics:
Twas late 65 at the old wall sea yard
She was commissioned to haul the black tar
And built the Northumbria there on the bar
Roll, Northumbria, Roll
For when the Egyptians they closed the Red Sea
And call came on high from the powers that be
To build a royal monster right down on the quay
Roll, Northumbria, Roll, me boys
Roll, Northumbria, Roll
Carpathia, Vengeance, Celestial Call
She was the tanker to out-size 'em all
From the banks of the Mersey to the port of the Hulal
Roll, Northumbria, Roll
And fair Princess Anne threw a bottle of wine
And watch as the giant set down in the Tyne
What lay ahead could no mortal divine
Roll, Northumbria, Roll, me boys
Roll, Northumbria, Roll
And it's one for the hot sun above
Two for the empire we love
And it's three for the fire that burns down below
Roll on Northumbria
Roll, Northumbria, Roll
And it's one for the hot sun above
Two for the empire we love
And it's three for the fire that burns down below
Roll on Northumbria
Roll, Northumbria, Roll
So come all ya good workmen, beware the command
That comes down on high from the desk of a man
Who's never held steel or torch in his hands
Roll, Northumbria, Roll
For atop a wild breaker, the cracks in her frame
Spilled 'er black guts all across the wild Maine
And she limped away through an ocean of flame
Roll, Northumbria, Roll, me boys
Roll, Northumbria, Roll
And it's one for the hot sun above
Two for the empire we love
And it's three for the fire that burns down below
Roll on Northumbria
Roll, Northumbria, Roll
Ah yes the shantie that sounds like its about a pirate shit or something but is actually about a bloody oil wreck in the late 20th century
The main meaning of the song is about the fall of Britain as a major superpower
I'm glad it wasn't just me that thought this! I was expecting the song to be about post-Second World War battleship, not an oil tanker.
Yeah, I don’t think they had tankers in pirate days… 😂

The greatest tragedy for humanity was the fall of The Empire.
One day lads, brothers united again :)
@@roundduck7005 many people In the world see that very differently
I LOVE this song from the Dreadnaughts. You did it justice brother, well done!!!!
These lyrics always hit me hard:
"So come all ya good workmen, beware the command
That comes down on high from the desk of a man
Who's never held steel or torch in his hands."
Same
This is why we formed unions, so we didn't have to get killed by those behind desks who have never done a honest days work in their life, giving out orders they don't understand for terrible pay.
They basically made smol ship big
And said okay that sounds good
Not knowing how huge ships behaved at sea

Wow, how can I convince you to sing David Kincaid’a Civil War songs? This was fantastic, chilling, and empowering.
Also I've seen many times in the comments throughout your songs, recommendations for Horse soldier and Rose Tattoo, Just wanted to say those would beautifully capture your singing style! Thank you for the amazing song today, it was fire!
Nice
I think those two would be great for him to do.

Well done bud, doesn't quite hit me the same way as the original but still well done. While skimming the comments in your other videos I'm surprised nobody has recommended you singing "Fiddlers Green" - Marley's Ghost (not the original but my favorite rendition/cover). Keep it up love what you do.

I have to say, ever since I found this song a few days ago, I've listened to it probably a hundred times now? You have such a good harmony, and an excellent singing voice, sir.
Chills throughout man, splendid work!

Finally got to this classic.
Great work mate, all the best from the Northern Territory ::)
The song was written in 2019 and we're already calling it a classic?
Thanks
Amazing, absolutely amazing! I love the harmony and the layers you have in the chorus! Plus that drum is so deep and resonating, perfect for the grace of your voice. Keep up the great work Seth you never cease to amaze! 😃😃😃😃👌👌👌👌👍👍👍👍

@@sethstatonwatkins No thank you! You are awesome in what you do! Keep up the great work!
0.0 I've never heard this song before! that was fantastic ^_^
I highly recommend The Dreadnoughts, it's an original by them, off their album Into the North, this, Joli Rogue and Dear old Stan were their originals off that album and they're all amazing.
You did such a good job on this! So fun to listen to. Any chance of this being put on Spotify?
Eventually!
This Carpathia is THE RMS Carpathia? The first responder to Titanic's SOS signal?
Absolutely fantastic. Would you be interested in trying to cover something by Stan Rogers? I feel like you'd be one of the few capable of doing his legendary voice justice.
Yes, would like to at some point
I would love to hear your version of Fields of Athenry. Keep up the great performances.
Have done!
Have you thought of doing Danny boy?? I feel like your voice would fit it very well
Just repeating this from a comment I saw cause I think it’s a great idea would love to see horse soldier or rose tattoo
Sooo. I want to do what you do. Cover songs. What programs do you use? How do you get the background drums in your videos?
Excellent! I use Ableton Live Lite 11 for my recordings (this version is free!). Very simple 8 track set up for most songs. I use a Scarlett 2i2 third gen interface, an AKG P220 cardioid condenser mic, some PreSonus Eris speakers, a ring light, a decent PC, and phone to record videos! All in all, the most expensive part is the PC. The interface, mic, and speakers cost less than $500 collectively. Hope this helps!
Love this!!!! Would you please do a cover of Kelly's Irish Brigade by David Kincaid. Keep up the great music.
100% up the fookin RA!
@@persianprince6213 Amazing song, but it s not about the RA I m afraid
@@aandrei99 civil war, Irish wars, both fighting an oppressor of freedom.... so if we do the math and multiply the civil war by the Irish war of independence divided by the UDA and squared by the men of 1916 we get a mathematical solution of.... IRA cubed in the situation of the American civil war.
@@aandrei99 Thus we get the IRA translated across the x-axis into the American civil war! So in fact the Irish brigade is about the IRA! Lol
@@aandrei99 P.S. Jk that was all BS lmao! I was thinking about the Belfast Brigade when I posted my first comment got the two mixed up, but if you follow the math I am correct right? 😁😁😁😉😉😋
When are you going to cover "Cam ye' o'er frea France"? You kill every song you touch in the best way and want to hear your marching interpretation
I love this song and this is an amazing cover!
Sorry mate, just wondering can you have a look at: The Jams, English Rose.
It's a great Anglo classic, speaks volumes about the bands love of our isles
Have you thought of doing a cover of Ireland by Garth Brooks?
If you take requests, I would like to request “Waterloo” by Stonewall Jackson (Singer, just to clarify).
@Seth Staton do you have a Spotify or a place where I can purchase/download your songs?
I am on Spotify! Just look up Seth Staton Watkins. Songs there are also available on all other platforms!
i love how this song is just so ominous. i'd love to see this on spotify! and what is the percussion? bodhran?
Can you cover roll Alabama roll
Could you do Shady Grove?
Hail to you friend!
I humbly ask that you cover "the rambling rover" by silly wizard
Yes, on my list!
You are brilliant; great singing, great choice of songs. I just wish there was less reverb, not specifically on this song, but on some of the other songs you've done like "I Wanna be in the Cavalry". There's a certain quality that comes with raw sound as opposed to overly produced vocals that fits war songs especially, but I understand that it can end up sounding very thin, if you will, compared to produced sound.
Thanks for the feedback, I'll keep that in mind!
@@sethstatonwatkins Also keep in mind that your version of "I Wanna be in the Cavalry" is still my favorite out of all I've found, all things considered. :)

Absolute fire bruv! Would love to hear that one sung by Seth, it's one of my favorites, but also super saddening.
Honestly im going to have it play at my funeral! Lol😎👍
I think barrets privateers could be a good one for you to sing
Please correct the lyrics - they note:
"What lay ahead could no mortal divine
Roll, Northumbria, Roll, me boys
Roll, Northumbria, Roll
And it's one for the hot sun above
Two for the empire we love
And it's three for the fire that burns down below
Roll on Northumbria
Roll, Northumbria, Roll
And it's one for the hot sun above
Two for the empire we love
And it's three for the fire that burns down below
Roll on Northumbria
Roll, Northumbria, Roll" BUT you sang
"What lay ahead could no mortal divine
Roll, Northumbria, Roll, me boys
Roll, Northumbria, Roll
And it's one for the hot sun above
Two for the empire we love
And it's three for the fire that burns down below
Roll on Northumbria
Roll, Northumbria, Roll"
IT would appear that last five line were accidently repeated.
He got the lyrics wrong
