Jim is right in what he says, having a drink and being relaxed with people that are friendly is ideal for learning. Learning Russian as I found is like learning to ice skate...When sober it is very painful but have a couple of drinks, it may be painful the day after but you may well find that you can indeed skate. After a while I found that I was actually thinking in Russian and even dreaming in Russian.
I love the Scottish Guy Guide to Learning Russian: Have a glass of wine! 😂 But seriously, I studied Russian for about 6 months, 2 years ago and have now restarted again to listen to youtubers and am using the Tandem App to practice. I'm visiting Moscow in December and looking forward to using my A2 level skills.
Can I give you a little advice about No5 (grammar)? Just note that most Russian words are constructs (as in many other languages). There is a root meaning and before and behind it are docked - modifiers. Foreigners are especially frightened by long words, but they are often compound. If you find the core, everything will immediately become clearer and not as scary as it sounds. And what modifiers when and how to add and insert is a matter of practice. And one more point: traditionally, in Russia, the distance of communication is shorter, so there is no need to be afraid that you will not be understood. I hope it is already clear that the notorious Russian face is just the absence of a mask.
I want to move to Russia eventually and I want to be able to read Tolstoi in its original langauge😊Handwriting in Russian is a good way to learn vocabulary for me
I would say consume content in Russian after you've got the basis. Read, listen to music, watch shows, movies, RUclips - whatever floats your boat. Read the subtitles (this is where movies and shows are generally better) - first in your first language or the language that you already speak since English is probably the most available, read lyrics and stories in Russian, read texts on the socials etc. Try to translate the ones that seem the most interesting by only using the translators for single words or phrases when you can't get the meaning, ask your friends and/or teacher about things that you don't understand / had trouble with. Just my 5 kopeyek.
Russian with Nasty: learn Russian in one year. Sometimes her lessons make my head explode but all she says is “DO NOT STOP, keep going. If you do not get it now then you will get it later on.” So on I go…!
I agree finding the right tutor can help as well as immersion to acquire language. I feel though that every learner is different some might actually like a more grammar based approach which in this case could be helpful for them. In my experience to actually talk in a foreign language needs some base knowledge of the language for you to be able to really learn from interaction with native speakers alone. I guess optimal is a mix of all these approaches.
I’m Russian living in Canada. The very first time I heard Scottish accent was here in Canada - there were two blokes walking behind me and talking to each other - and I thought the guys were Russian, and I thought to myself: wow, their English is so good, but their accent is shite… 😂 Jokes aside, I do like Scottish accent! 😊
@@vladelets_vag Не верю.
Im learning Russian on line and the lady is a teacher from Siberia, we concentrate on grammar, but I'm also learning with a friend AND I see her each week and she is from Georgia but she speaks Russian and last week she said exactly the same thing. we are intending to visit Russia in March for three weeks (and then we will see) but she said you don't really need to be so strict because the Russian people will understand you if you get it wrong! the ending doesn't matter SO much just speak! but I have that problem I do feel stupid and I get embarrassed! I gotta get. over it and just do it! THANKS FOR THE ADVICE IT WAS JUST WHAT I NEEDED TO HEAR!
You have the best advice. I also have found if you read a lot in Russian it helps your Grammar anyway because you can see how everything works in context. I am married to a Russian woman and our children don't like English so I can say Russian has become my home language because when I speak to them I speak only in Russian, When I speak to my Wife we speak both English and Russian.
Speaking Russian perfectly is hard and will take a long time to perfect, from what I understand it is very much context based and gender classification. I made some good progress using rosetta stone Russian language learning pack. You are attacking it from the correct angle though, learning the essentials that meet your needs - the rest will slot in over time.
@moscow3424 Interesting history. My grandparents were from Lithuania and they also spoke Russian from Soviet times but alas, I was never taught Russian.
Be careful with advise having glasses of wine because there is no safe dose of alcohol Or at least you should mentioned that alcohol is bad for health, don’t propagate this thing Cheers
Very strange as in western countries after a few drinks most people speak rubbish and slur their English and you cannot always understand them so next time I will try Russian and see if we can understand each other much better.👌🤣
You missed the point - just because you're older, it doesn't mean you can't teach idiomatic speaking to a learner. You're dismissing people over forty as if they don't understand contemporary life!
Writing Russian without errors is not an easy task even for Russians themselves, who have been studying Russian at school for 10 years from 2nd to 11th classes, and foreigners should not even try, at least not until they learn to speak Russian fluently.
How did you get in contact with Russian real estate agents before you moved to Russia? I'm using a real estate website that shows the numbers of the agents, but none of them are registered on Whatsapp.
What do you think is the best way to learn a language?
A few glasses of wine and grammar becomes perfect.
For guys, talk to all girls, maybe you'll even find one that sticks around to correct grammar. Lol
Just wrote it, then you said it in video😂
Practice, practice and practice. With locals.
Live with locals, watch TV in the desired language, because then you see the action, see the object, and hear the word. Also, forget your other language. Immerse yourself.

I second that after a couple of drinks you start speaking foreign language more fluently, tested on myself in English😊

Basically all you need to do is just this: Step 1. Get yourself some nice Russian person to talk to. Step 2. Done.
Step 2. Talk, talk, talk & let your companion correct mistakes and explain how to speak as a native. Step.3. Done.

I agree. You need to have confidence in yourself to just speak the language and not care about being wrong

Your killing it Jim fuck the haters
Jim, you can hold a competition with English speaking people who will last longer in speaking Russian

Aye I'm at the same stage as you only with Polish language. I'm pretty sure I could learn Russian as a slavic language as I noticed some similarities.

Have been in Russia 20+ years.Gave up learning the language.
Don’t give up you will get better. You don’t need to get to native level
Old age.Now almost 65.My mind is still reasonably active and am able to read the NT in the original Greek.
One glass of wine, you'll speak Russian better, by the fourth or fifth glass you'll make up your own language.
I am confused what works better vodka or wine? Or beer? 😂
Actually terrified learning this language!
There aren't difficult or easy languages. You just learn foreigh languages with your bottom and not with your brain.
Russian is so much better than our Collective West language 😢
