Not knowing who Dismember is but knowing who Gatecreeper is is the same as as knowing Exhumed but not knowing Carcass. Dismember is literally their biggest influence and Chase's (vocals) favorite band. Fan/artist dissconnect.
Thought bolt thrower was one of their bigger influences. Which makes sense because they're slow boring monotonous.

Sometimes people early in the game can't quite help what they know. But being this huge Gatecreeper fan and never having investigated the greats of swedeath is just awful.
Honestly being a Gatecreeper fan at all is pretty awful lol but there are worse things.
I swear people are hyping up Mozart without even listening to Bach
Listen Bach is the GOAT, but Mozart is the master of elegant and efficient composition and was arguably a better melody writer.
I like both, but I enjoy Mozart more. Bach is third most popular composer.
I saw a kid wearing a Gatecreeper tee at the airport last month. Couldn't have been more than 12, skinny, colored hair. I was wearing a Morbid Angel sweatshirt but it made me cringe knowing that both he and I represent the same type of loser to the average normie around us. They probably considered me with my gray long hair the worse case. Point is, none of this shit matters in the bigger picture. We're all freaks here. Gatekeeping is cool and all but have some perspective. We're living in a very small bubble.

Sounds like an awesome 12 year old, there are way worse gateway bands out there. Kids probably going to love the classics when he does a deep dive.
My friend loves gatecreeper but he definitely doesn’t know dismember but he’s a hardcore guy so it makes sense
As someone who got into death metal first as a kid & didn’t get into hardcore until years later I can say This is exactly the case for 99% of these type of guys, gatecreeper is essentially a hardcore band if you’re talking in terms of the scene that they come from. It’s hardcore guys playing death metal for a hardcore audience, I would imagine they didn’t start playing with other death metal bands who weren’t from the hardcore scene until recently after getting more mainstream success. Not saying that means people don’t have the right to think they’re shitty though lol & I’m saying that as someone who likes their music but definitely like classic death metal bands way wayyyy more
GateCreeper? Never heard of um. They one of those hipster bands from Banger TV and MetalSucks?

Bands like Frozen Soul, 200 Stab Wounds, Sanguisugabogg all got exposure from the big metal websites and even some non metal websites. Same with Gatecreeper, Tomb Mold, Blood Incantation, etc. Thats why they are more popular. Bigger websites hyped them up and exposed them to more people. Im assuming they are all tied into hardcore or punk music in some way which is why these hipster websites are covering them. Remember theres tons of metal subgenres out there so these mainstream websites are very selective about what they cover and talk about so there's always a reason why they are covering certain underground music/bands and not others.
You nailed it.
Yeah just do a Google news search on any of these bands and see what sites they are mentioned on. Invisible Oranges, Revolver, MetalSucks, Metal Injection, Decibel, Brooklyn Vegan, Lambgoat, Kerrang!, all the big metal websites are talking about them. Even popular non metal hipster websites like Pitchfork are reviewing these band's albums and giving them decent reviews. That helps increase your exposure and makes you more popular.
#BigMetal is anti-metal
You got it. There is a crossover appeal with those bands into the hardcore scene so it’s got more exposure. Sanguisubogg has a member in a beat down hardcore band called Volcano that’s gotten popular too. It’s just wild to me that people flip out over how awesome those bands but have absolutely no clue who Mortician is 😂. 200 stab wounds just toured through town a few weeks ago and everyone was stoked to see them which is cool not hating people can like what they like but just agreeing on the fan base. Damn! just made an order and forgot to say anything.
I noticed this style taking off when Black Breath hit the scene. Had a circle of friends from the Austin area that were always exposing me to these metallic hardcore bands that mixed in the Swedish DM guitar tone with their hardcore. Now it's so oversaturated that these bands have to experiment with their sound by adding technical and progressive elements to their arsenal. Even try to blacken their style in some cases, and add synths for that cosmic/horror vibe. It's basically what deathcore started doing when it got oversatured with Suicide Silence and Job For A Cowboy clones.
Also, J-Dawg, do you have your tickets for the Sick New World fest for 2024?? 😹
Oh yeah Black Breath forgot about them.. I remember checking them out when they first started. I do love alot of metallic hardcore bands..when I got into heavy music that was the 2nd genre I dived into after death metal and grindcore. Old Converge and Coalesce are sick.
Another 2 bands I think that really brought in that style you're talking about was Trap Them and especially Nails. NAILS sounds like swedish riffs but mixed with a band like Phobia. I do love them but it became a big scene favorite
@@onewhitepony Yeah, definitely those 2 bands. Nails was huge! My favorite album of Black Breath's was their "Sentenced To Life" album. The last one went full new wave of OSDM. It caught me off guard since I didn't expect them to do that. Wish they were still putting out new material.. Pretty sure they would have been as popular as a Gatecreeper or Frozen Soul.
@hamachancutter I need to go back and really listen to them again. Been a while since I heard it. Honestly I wasn't deep into that scene during that time except a few bands. But yeah ill dig into them again! Goes back to what Jdawg says why some bands get popular and some don't. It's just weird to me. I don't like colored or swirly vinyl....I prefer black over all, if black isn't an opinion then I'll get clear or a clear splatter. I agree with Chase. In keeping the colors matching the artwork / album theme. Making a green or bright orange variant for Left Hand Path would makes zero sense to me but I wouldn't buy it anyway. I feel you could make a cool splatter version though that would look killer. You buy a record to play. Not to look at. All the colors just drive up the price anyway... just give me black vinyl all day. I'd rather them invest money into packaging and artwork rather a colored vinyl myself.
I love Dismember, Fleshcrawl and Gatecreeper. Black Mark and Metal Blade never pushed Fleshcrawl like they should have and it's unfortunate. Fleshcrawl has a new singer and they're working on new material. Go check out their older material. Those albums and artwork are great! I hope they get on a new label and get their name out there. Fleshcrawl not touring the USA at all and not consistently enough in Europe probably didn't help much. Their drummer Bastian Herzog is one of the coolest, nicest guys you'll ever meet in the scene! They're all cool people. So check them out and support Fleshcrawl! Hell's works directly with the band. So check their merch out on the Hell's site!
some swirly can be cool but often the bleeding together of the two colors results in something lame. a key example is red and white, ending up looking like a pink carnation flower.
If any of Bathorys greatest works came out in 2005, let alone today, people might hardly notice, because peoples sense of music had been further obliterated at that point. Its far worse today. most of them have the sound but have straight up pop-music structures, like Death did (which is why Death has been so popular in the mainstream comparatively speaking). real death metal eschews the pop music structure and is a big part of what separated death metal from thrash metal. by pop music structure i mean verse bridge chorus verse bridge chorus verse bridge chorus, etc.

Yeah same or I really want it from a band I love. The price points is what kept me from really getting into collecting. 30-40 bucks a pop versus 9.99-12.99 for a cd is why I’d say 90% of my collection is cd. If I had the money to burn and the space I’d have equal to vinyl lol
@onewhitepony tapes and cds because they are cheaper.if vinyl wasn't so trendy it would be cheaper.
you do realize vinyl masters 90% of the time have higher dynamic masters than the CD, right? Most CDs are around 5-9DR and vinyl ends up being 10-14DR. with the exception of CDs from the 80s and early 90s when they can be 14-18DR easily outshining any modern LP reissue. look up the loudness wars if you're unaware of this kind of thing.
We who actually listen to music buy them for sound quality. With the proper equipment, the difference is palpable. If you use some big-box store $100 fisher price skool kid turntable with an unadjustable tonearm and non-removable cartridge than one will not hear the difference and in fact are literally physically destroying the records that one plays on them. They carve up the grooves of the records causing irreparable crackle.
@ianswift3521 oh I agree... I'm not as knowledgeable on the technical side but it's more of a true account to how a album should sound. I've had musician friends tell me it's the truest sound. Especially if the album was recorded analog but these days it's rare to find producers still working with tape
$30-$40 for a record? most extreme metal records are averaging $25. considering that minimum wage used to be $5-7 for a long time, the price point of an average of $15-20 for an LP made sense. Since the minimum wage has jumped up to $15 for unskilled work in many areas, it makes sense that the cost of records would cost equivalent to about two hours pay. it's the same as its always been.
$30-$40 is a very recent price point found only at distributors who charge too much and is often reflected with overhyped newer e-bands. that cost range is typically found in pop music and goes even higher, i've seen pop records for $50+ easy.
lately extreme metal albums have gone up to sometimes $30 for a single LP especially at unscrupulous distributors who are more into it for money rather than the love of the music. of course there are places like 20BS and newQ war now who've both always charged a lot despite "loving" the music, they love money even more (I'm sure they'll see this and think "OOHHH WE'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO MAKE MONEY? Poor you!!"). That's not even mentioning the "handling" charges they add despite being slower to pack up and send out an order, regardless of how big it is, than the majority of labels/distros .

Anyone buy any Destruction LPs from High Roller Records recently? (Hells Headbangers had them in stock) I bought the 1st album and it was really well done. Colored vinyl, 2 posters and kick ass pictures!
they've been the same quality for about a decade my friend. very high quality reissues - and represses of said reissues - by high roller at all times.
@@ianswift3521 o cool!! Just recently discovered high roller thought they do good work!
???!!!!!QUESTION???????????????
Krisiun ageless venomous triggers destroy Vader Litany disco dance triggers brah brah. I bet the young bucks don't even know what im talking about.
Your thoughts broskee??? That album may not be the grratest sound, it wipes it ass with todays death metal
I remember that Litany album was quite hyped when it came out. Disco triggers aside, that song Xeper is a banger
I bought both when they first came out. I haven’t listened to Ageless Venomous in a long time honestly, remember thinking it was just ok compared to the first three, but it might be time to give it a re-listen. I agree both albums destroy most popular death metal bands today though
