It was more referrbishable than reusable and it would be cheaper to rebuild the boosters with new material It would glide like a brick with wings And then the saturn v took people to the moon and also looked very cool
today i also learnt about Buran, the russian space shuttle. Also pretty cool, the booster was a heckin chonker but it never really stuck cause it was expensive and the soviet union sorta collapsed.
There actually were launch escape systems! Sorta... Prior to launchpad departure, astronauts could leave the space shuttle, returning to the launchpad and take zip-lines to escape any danger.
Challenger and Columbia also had ejection seats for the commander and pilot but once they started doing flights with more than 2 people they got rid of them in both shuttles
so far you are my favorite youtuber, i love the way you make these videos. Hoping to see more of this By the way you should do a video about bombers or attack aircraft! Have a great day or night 👋
Thanks for makimg such great content , its really amazing and informative presented in a creative way , you are one of my favorite youtubers man , keep going
On the first few missions, the shuttle carried seats from jets instead of the normal seats because they had ejection capability. This would have allowed the only two person crew during the early test flights to eject. Not that it would have done much but its something. Remidns me of the gemini ejection seats.
the thing is, there is one wehicles cooler than the American shuttle, it's the Soviet buran, it's basically ctrlc ctrlv of the American one but compleatly diffrend, one, the boosters were liquid fuel insed of solid, and it had a autopilot, so it could do fully unmanned missions to space and back, also it could carry more cargo
Nice video it concludes basically everything you would want to know about space shuttles. In spring I visited Kennedy Space Center and you concluded everything I learned there.thanks keep up the great videos🙌🏻👍🏼
we were so close to having really cool stuff with shuttle (Shuttle-Centaur, shuttle launches from Vandenberg) but poor management resulting in the loss if Challenger ruined all that the very next flight of Challenger after 51L was supposed to be a Shuttle-Centaur flight we were so close 😭
Also don’t forget the shuttle made the first in space repair! (That I know of) it saved the Hubble telescope without it the telescope would have gone to waste
For me are the Saturn 5, the Falcon 9 and the Starship the coolest rockets because the Saturn V flew 1969 to the moon, the Falcon 9 is the first reusable rocket with has cheap prices and lands very cool and the Starship is really in all Things cool it uses Methalox, the raptor engines, its in everything cool
I love the space shuttles, but they shouldn't have existed. Spaceplanes in general are just so impractical and so safe that they're usually not worth flying on. The Saturn V is by far the coolest vehicle in my opinion
I'm not sure about that, but it was technically impressive in how successful it was. It was plagued from the start, although it was so close to being great
The starship by spacex is better because: Reusability: The Starship was designed from the ground up to be a fully reusable starship. In contrast, the Space Shuttles were only partially reusable, resulting in significant maintenance and operational costs. Larger Payload Capacity: The Starship has a much larger payload capacity than the Space Shuttle. It can carry up to 100 tons of payload into orbit, making it one of the most capable spacecraft around. The Space Shuttle could only carry about 27 tons into orbit. Versatility: The Starship is more versatile than the Space Shuttle. Not only can it carry payloads into orbit, but it can also be used for lunar and martian missions as well as interplanetary travel. It can also be used as a space station or cargo ship. Cost Efficiency: SpaceX is committed to making space travel more cost-efficient, and the Starship plays a key role in that. Its reusability and ability to carry large payloads should significantly reduce the cost per kilogram to orbit. Rugged Construction: The Starship is constructed of stainless steel, making it more durable and less prone to heat damage seen on the Space Shuttle. This enables longer operating times and better maintainability. Easy Access to Space: The Starship is better suited to provide inexpensive and regular access to space due to its high reusability and scheduled frequent launches. This could revolutionize the space industry. Autonomous Landing and Reuse: The Starship is capable of autonomous landing and reuse on various planets and celestial bodies, making it extremely useful for future manned missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond. High cruising speed: The Starship is said to be able to achieve high cruising speeds, which could significantly reduce the travel time to other planets. The Space Shuttle didn't reach nearly the same speeds. Sustainability: The Starship is designed to run on liquid methane and oxygen as fuel, which could allow future use of resources on other celestial bodies. It's also the fattest rocket mankind has ever built! 💥
@@_mikolaj_ landing vertically is cooler in my opinion. Once I saw a falcon 9 booster land, and it came in at pretty much a 45 degree angle. It's like something out of scifi.
I’d say the Space Shuttle was really cool, except for when it was re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere. That’s why the nose, underbelly and leading edges of the wings needed heat resistant carbon-carbon panels. You know, so it didn’t burn up or anything, like what happened to Columbia.
Just want to ask one thing. Please, when you get really huge as a channel (I know you will), don't start to only post a video with 6 months or more from the time previous one was posted. You know, "Internet Historian" or "OverSimplified" style.
Space shuttles are cool, yes ! If only the shuttle program didn't set us back years in space travel because yes sadly the shuttle program was a faillure we would've alreay went to mars if the program had never started and istead had continued the saturn program. and that's not me saying it, it's former NASA administrator Michael D. Griffin that said that.
so the boosters were initially rcovered and reused, but to refurbishing them for next flight costed nearly as much as new pair of boosters so NASA eventually dropped the idea of reusing them
they continued to be recovered and refurbished for the entire shuttle program, SLS expends them though since nasa has a backlog of SRBs from the shuttle program and they want to get rid of them before SLS block 2 arrives with upgraded gen 2 SRBs
@@rexdtThey're called BOLE, or booster obsolecense and life extension. They will be pretty similar aesthetically, although with many improvements from fuel to weight reductions
The Space Shuttle is the only vehicle to have had the technical capability of bringing an enemy space station back to earth. Salyut 7 was in orbit during the shuttle program and fit inside the shuttle payload bay. Shuttle also was capable of bringing soviet polar satellites back from a polar orbit, although polar launches were cancelled after challenger because there was no need to launch military payloads into polar orbit, as commercial launches were cancelled and shuttle was no longer planned to launch ALL military payloads. One extremely cool event was the fit test at vandenberg for the shuttle. There's pictures of an entire (mockup) space shuttle stack rolled out on a shuttle pad.
I hate the space shuttle!I hate the space shuttle!I hate the space shuttle!I hate the space shuttle!I hate the space shuttle!
