  • Beautiful Black-necked Stilt (Himantopus mexicanus) shorebirds foraging worms. Three different birds are shown. The Stilt combs the mudflats for invertebrate prey, using visual identification combined with the tactile sense of its fine-tipped bill. The bird shakes the worm in the water, rinsing off the mud, and cuts it into suitable bite-size pieces. These scenes are from September and October at Adobe Creek, Palo Alto Baylands Nature Preserve. This is part of a 3 video series on Black-necked Stilt from the Baylands.

The playlists are organized by geographical region and topic (singing birds, shorebirds, etc). The 200+ videos are from many different places across the globe, with a focus on birds of North America and the Western Palearctic, including Europe, Israel and Morocco. The only chance I ever had to film these birds, I couldn't see what they ate. Seeing those worms pop out of the water in his beak was fun. And don't you love the way they stick a landing?

For sure. Fun to go back and study the video clip to see how the deal with the worms. All the best.
