  • Berthing the paddle steamer Waverley at Sharpness goes terribly wrong. With a falling tide, passengers are urged to board the ship. Did they all get aboard? Watch the film to see the clock ticking away with the Waverley in difficulties.

Great video. Well done Waverley, the winchman, and the photographer. Thanks Rmb

I didn't know until the other day that her wheels are locked together so they are only going one direction at a time. They are not independent of each other so to use an armoured vehicle expression 'pivot steer'. Thanks for posting.

I remember reading a few years ago an article reproduced in a local paper, about the mill girls' day out. Apparently, they took the trains from up the Stroud valleys to Sharpness, where they boarded - I assume - the Waverley. At high water, they steamed to Ilfracombe. I day spent on the beach & in the pubs, they took the next flood back to Sharpness, trains & home. A mammoth undertaking, even by today's standard!

I wouldn’t dream of taking a paddle boat up to Sharpness without a handful of tugs. Slack water up there lasts about 10 minutes and then the tide runs as you can see like billy o. Wouldn’t want to prang that lovely ship.
