set in the 80s the cannibalism is such an apt metaphor for many different things-queerness, drug addiction etc-just the people who were put on the margins of society. it’s a wonderfully bizarre mashup of many diff genres done expertly and taylor shoulda gotten awards attention for this tbh the whole film is art. mark is creepy as helllll too
Horror and romance may seem like complete opposites but they mesh so well together because love can be as harrowing and disruptive as horror. I love it specifically when cannibalism is used as a metaphor for a type of love that is obsessive and over consuming.
yea the way the internet tried to make it weird that a horror film was trying to somehow normalize cannibalism was the weirdest take ever since it’s hardly the first cannibalism film ever (not even the only one THAT YEAR) and it’s a horror film and no one ever says horror films are normalizing x y and z…. felt like so many people lost brain cells over this movie 😂
. lol that’s wild. barely got into horror films bt this n pearl sparkd mild intrst. hues .f th films were grt. th cannibalism thing truly is m odd take.
I think most people don't know how to deal with Bones and All because it's not just a brainless horror and it's not just a straightforward romance either. It's very artsy, Luca is obviously an European director and mainstream audiences can't deal with that (the same goes for Call me by your name). I was literally buzzing after I watched it in the cinema. It's so good.
EXACTLY! Not a flaw. You should watch back and listen in to the background noise-- the TV broadcasts and the radio televangelists. There's a lot of background noise that, I think, is brilliantly used to give us a look into Maren and Lee's minds.
yknow what it's just so nice hearing someone talk about how much they love something. this was a v sincere video, and i'll definitely check this movie out on my next day off
I am here because I just saw it and I agree fully... I can't even place it in a specific genera. Despite its straight forward plot progression it manages to be entirely mysterious and brutal while seamlessly and easily transferring over to something so wholesome, loving, and real. The cinematography is nothing but a pure delight, and captures the amazing and wonderful actors just as they needed to be. Top movie of my last several years.
Great video essay well done. I did film studies back when I was at college and I can tell you’re really passionate about the medium. Highly recommend sticking with it if you love it and going to uni to study film. That’s what I did and now I’m a full time editor. Really loved how you touched on all the aspects of the film and how that makes it the gem that is it. Truly my favourite film of 2022 and I think it will become a cult classic in the decades to come. Looking forward to more of your videos.
its incredible how michael stuhlbarg can go from playing a lovely, understanding father in call me by your name, to this literal CREEPY man. i fr got so scared when he started to run towards lee’s truck when they where escaping. he has such good acting skills
the progression and growth in Lees character regarding his vulnerability is my favourite aspect of the entire film. especially when you consider the cannibalism as a metaphor for something like addiction or queerness, the fact that the second Lee realised what Maren was, subconsciously his walls were already lowered without him consciously allowing it. in the diner scene, when he asks "do you think im nice", even though it was him who said it he almost seemed more taken aback by the question than Maren was, to the point of getting up and walking away, not just emotionally detatching from his vulnerability but physically removing himself from it as well. juxtaposed with the scene on the hill near the end, he's become so safe and comfortable around Maren that it takes next to no convincing or assurance for him to tell her everything his entire character was built around hiding from everyone up until that point. throughout the film you see little glimpses of his sensitivity, like the way he took off his shirt after Kayla said he looked "like a faggot" in it, but overall he does his best to come off as a very headstrong, arrogant person. "when youre 140 pounds soaking wet you need a big attitude" and all that. it doesnt come as a shock, which is such an impressive theme throughout the film overall but especially here. it completely contrasts everything his character has been shown to be, but it doesnt come as a shock to him or the audience. by the end of the film, he still has his snarky, badass personality, like in the lines "i ate him right the fuck up" and "i felt high as a motherfucker". the difference is that by the end of the film his self assured mannerisms are the core of his personality, not the fascade, to the point of him allowing Maren to be his safety net instead his exaggerated attitude. it's absolutely beautiful, and as if that wasnt enough the entire thing is brought full circle with the dialogue. at the beginning, he asks "do i seem nice?" and is so uncomfortable that he physically removes himself entirely, but by the end hes safe and vulnerable enough to ask "you dont think im bad?" and lets Maren hold him instead. his vulnerability goes from something that pulls the two apart to being the thing that brings them as close as they get in the entire film, physically and emotionally. I absolutely love Lee's development as a character, he might actually be my favourite character out of any media ive come across.
The red hair is a reference to christiane f. A movie about the vibrant but fleeting nature of youth if mismanaged. The main character has red dyed hair that becomes more and more unkept as she gets becomes more and more crippled by homelessness and drug use. The movie is also a reference used in a designer raf Simon’s fashion collections. Luca and raf are friends there are many raf fashion nods in this film and Lucas other films, specifically that sheer dress the main character in this film is seen wearing. There’s a very similar dress done by raf Simon’s for Calvin Klein in one of his collections. I work at Ck and our designer lounge on floor 12 is done by ruby sterling with warped mirrors that are seen also used in Luca’s suspiria.
I watched this precisely because of how much I love it and how good I think it is, so it’s really lovely to see somebody who agrees with me and actually has the technical knowhow as to explain why it is as good as it is.
ahhhh I found my people ever since I watched bones and all I coudny get it out my head and still can’t ut will stay with me forever it’s one of those movies it’s art and changed ur perspective just like call me by your name Timothée has a way of doin that in all the movies he’s in the range and emotion he puts into all films is so incredibly powerful and beautiful I love love love seeing people appreciate this film cause I knew I wasn’t the only one who felt so deeply ab it and wanted to talk ab it for hours
I never thought of them as humans with cannibalism, they seemed more like a type of vampire which was inherited through a parent. I have to agree this movie is amazing. Very rarely can I say I cried at the end of a horror type movie. It is such a masterpiece a story about understanding people who want to belong but never can. One of the things that I noticed and absolutely loved was the blood spot on the nurses uniform in the asylum. It was a detail that makes you feel put off. It’s like you said the blood on white makes you feel something so visceral.
Fantastic analysis! When it comes to colors in movies, I'm not sure if it's that straight-forward, though some are pretty clear, like your point about white wardrobe choices - that makes perfect sense. But when it comes to the lighting example, red and blue, I'm not entirely convinced it's all about symbolism. Firstly, red and blue lighting is a common lighting technique for creating interesting visuals. It's used to make scenes pop with color contrast and depth. You'll notice the warm/cold color contrast in lighting in basically all movies, no matter what they're about. Red could mean anger, sure, but why not love? And as for blue, it might be seen as friendly and calming, but it can also feel pretty cold, sad, and gloomy. I also wrote a similar analysis on the psychology of color in film several years ago, but honestly, I'm rethinking it, and these days I feel it's leaning way too much into pseudoscience territory. It's too easy to attach whatever people want to a single color. I would rather analyze the characteristics of all the colors working together in a shot; like the saturation/vibrance, the lightness or darkness, what kind of 'color-contrast' (complementary, triadic, monochromatic, etc) is used in a scene, warmth or coolness, high or low contrast, and more. I think that paints a better picture of the meaning of an image, than simply isolating 'red' or 'blue' and attaching meaning to it.
I JUST watched this last night for the first time. I was pleasant I surprised. Its a unique love story about two people who are doomed. Very sad movie.

after watching bones and all, i wasnt quite sure about my opinion on it. it all felt a little shocking and a lot to take in, but this cleared my view on the film a lot. i enjoyed watching this, it was so easy to take in and understand and its actually made me tempted to start reviewing films too. zofia from film studies
yeh i get what you mean, after that ending you just kind of sit there for a while took me a while to take in as well. also you definitely should start reviewing films. what did you think of the grandmother 😭
@@sonnyross1ter the grandmother was an incredibly unsettling watch…. but i honestly think the film was a good example of what horror films should be more like these days. horror films are meant to be scary and the best type of scary in my opinion are those that use those uncommon techniques like stop motion or unfitting sound effects as it just builds up on that disgusting, unnerving feel more than anything else. when a film makes me as uncomfortable as the grandmother did, it just proves how well the director is at manipulating filming artistry to create that extreme discomfort. overall its one of those films id ever only watch once in my life but its definitely interesting and tempts me to check out more of david lynch’s films. what did you think?
@@zofia2215 mhm for sure i completely agree on the horror point. also most of Lynch’s films are very uncomfortable but they are amazing. He’s my favourite director i think so I would definitely recommend checking out Twin Peaks (series), Mulholland Drive which is my favourite film of all time and Blue Velvet. They are all near perfect pieces of art and I think you would enjoy them a lot :)
"I want to add it to my spotify Playlist but then again I don't want to cause it's so sad " haha I feel the same about a lot of songs that's why I highly recommend having a Playlist for really sad songs
i saw the film not as a mashup of genres, but rather as a sendup of the ya paranormal genre which was popularized by twilight and subsequently done to death (I also loved the film and would count it as one of my all time favorites)
Great video! I'm guessing we're about the same age as I'm also in my first year of UK college (though I don't take film or media), watched this film for the first time last night and it blew me away - really good analysis here, you picked up on so many things I barely noticed. The genre fusion is masterful, the film creates such a tender and beautiful backdrop for the romance to take place on that I occasionally had to remind myself that they were also eating people.
Yes. This flik is excellent. Saw it back to back twice when I bumped into it. Than for the rest of the week it was just in the background. I think it's an alternate universe for Dr. Sleep.
Michael Stuhlbarg scared me more than anyone else. His 'Jake' is absolutely depraved, getting 'Deliverance' vibes here. This movie reminds me a lot of 'Badlands' by Malick insofar the leads do absolutely horrifying things, but there is an air of innocence above all.
I absolutely cannot bear horror and gore but I had to watch Timothee Chalamet who did a phenomenal job as Lee. Very compelling. Loving and murderous. I was able to cover my eyes on the gory scenes pretty easily because I'd read a plot description. Thank you for this excellent, thoughtful review. I agree Taylor Russell did an excellent job as well carrying the whole movie.
