Hey Will, how do intervals in say zone 5 fit into your planning? You previously mentioned 2 key workouts being marathon pace and threshold to shift LT1 and LT2 upwards. How to intervals in zones higher than threshold come into play as I have heard you mention those too, what's the physiological reasoning behind them over say, more threshold work.
Hey Will loving the content. Obviously a lot more work into this. Some growing pains with some of the editing (typing noise a little loud, some music overlay a little too loud), but overall much higher quality. If you’re trying to increase the quality I have a couple of suggestions. My personal opinion is that a couple videos ago you had a white screen with the text on the left side. These were really nice transition slides that were classy and minimalist. Regarding filming yourself, it looks like you had someone holding the camera but a tripod would probably work just as well and you can find a nice spot near your house to decrease production time. You had one shot with a blown out background. As you get more clips of your runners just use those instead of the blown out shots. What camera are you using? Shooting in a log format with zebras to avoid blowing out your highlights? Regarding the content I got super pumped by your title slide and the anticipation of hearing the details which you are unique in providing and are a very trustworthy source. I would keep this as a guiding value of your content because it is how you have created such a following thus far. You offer something unique in that regard and it should be the first lever you pull. Providing real value here will outweigh new coaching opportunities (which are inherently not very scalable). Looking forward to a more in depth breakdown of the thought process and the details of what you do! You will stand out if your provide this. Sorry for the wall of text but you are an asset and I really want to see you succeed.
Hey, thanks for the detailed feedback. My issue was that I needed to have a plan from the start. I wanted to do an in-depth training doco, so we captured A LOT of footage of me talking at the track, during the race, and the lactate test. But it didn't make a coherent story when we watched it back. It was just hardcore info with no context of who Mike was, what he was training for, or where we were in a specific training phase. As a result, I tried to write a script around the footage we had. It's been a great lesson to learn precisely what a "Dr Will" video is and what it isn't. It has also shown me that there are viewers like yourself who are incredibly passionate about the content I put out.
Given your expertise as a coach, I believe you could include much more information in your videos. Extending the video's length might be a good idea. This particular video felt more like a teaser, offering only a brief overview instead of a deep dive into the subject. I'm mentioning this because I know you're capable of delivering detailed content with an interesting perspective as a coach and the quality of your videos is consistently excellent. However, I feel there's untapped potential and you could further enhance the value of your videos by diving deeper.
We had planned something similar to what you're saying but decided to test the concept first with a shorter video. This video alone took four individual days of shooting (Track, Race, Testing, Dialogue), and then there's the scripting, editing, and thumbnail. Right now, I don't have the time or resources to commit to more documentary-style videos. I would like to use this proof of concept to get sponsors to support a series of training science videos in the build-up to Mike's next marathon.
Great work! Can you tell what were the typical repetitions Mike did (rep. distance, rep. pace, # reps), and for how many weeks, to get his lactate threshold pace 5 sec per minute down? Was doing 2 at or above threshold sessions a day also part of the plan?
We did Wednesday and Saturday sessions. Saturday was the big one, with 5km @ 3:05 + 3-5x 2km @ 3:00 min/km. Midweek was 3x 3km or similar, with some 1 min efforts to prep for the bunch's accelerations and the inevitable fast start. It took six weeks of consistent training to drop his threshold 5sec/km (2.8%). Weekly mileage was around 100 miles. 2 - 2.5hrs Long run on Sunday.
Wow, that was certainly a big workout on Saturday! Thanks a lot, this info is very helpful and it inspires me to integrate somewhere in my own buildup to the Valencia marathon. I need to get my speed also 5 secs down to get sub-3 😆.
I increased time at LT and then the continuous time spent at LT. i.e. week one was 5km + 3x 2km (11km total), week four was 5km + 5x 2km (15km total), Week five was 2x 5km + 5x 1km (still 15km, but 2x 5km blocks).
Stellar season so far from Mike, excited to see what's to come
Great video! Would love to see more 😄

Great content, but the music makes it kinda hard to tell what you're saying at certain points.

Do you reckon shoes are of importance when running at his level?

All the best! Valencia is a fast course.
@@drwilloconnornice so you increased time at LT? Shooting for 3 mmol? This the same thing you would do for marathon training specificity?

the content is but the loud obnoxious music is very distracting from it
What's with the inaccurate hard-coded subtitles?
