I, Julian is a fantastic book. I have always been drawn to Julian of Norwich and she comes alive with Claire Gilbert’s book. Truly a great read. Thank you for this lovely interview.
Julian also said that Trust must equal Prayer . . . or we are misunderstanding the enormity of God's Love. She has become a guiding light for me. Thank you, Claire Gilbert for writing this book.
Thank you Claire for creating this most wonderful book! It was a joy to read. Thanks also to the Philosophy Live team for introducing us to this fine work and its author.
I'm so glad I found Christine's Lambie interview. I Julian is a wonderful book-- I'm struggling to read it slowly. Thanks to Claire Gilbert for spending so many years getting to know Julian of Norwich, her world, and her visions. And congratulations on your recovery. I want to read Julian's books next, maybe even some of the texts Julian reads in the fictional auto-biography. (Haven't been able to locate Hid Divinity by Dionysius.)
Hi Hannah, So glad to hear you enjoyed this. Struggled to read it slowly? yes, it's a page turner! We're sure both Claire and Christine will be delighted if you read Julian's short works, Revelations of Divine Love. Even in the 21st century, it's a revelation. We like the OUP edition, published in 2015.
If I were to spend my entire life in a tiny cell I think I would go stir crazy. I suspect I would have hallucinations and possibly have visions of Elvis Presley or the Virgin Mary. 🤪🤪
I think most people now would agree with you. But in Julian's time there were around probably 7-10 anchorites at any one time in the country - a demanding way to engage in religion. In Claire's book she avoids implying that Julian was hallucinating - instead calling them religious visions or 'showings'. Thanks for watching.
