Here is my method. Commented before watching the video so let's hope it's not the same: Put a hipass filter at whatever frequency the track in question, most likely bass and/or rhythm guitar, is starting to cause a lot of problems. Make a send from this to a bus with the Waves plugin Lo-Air. Tune Lo-Air to the key of the song at an octave as low as it is audible. I use a note to frequency reference sheet for this. Remove the dry signal in the plugin. Put the drums, besides the bus where it normally goes, though a bus with a lopass filter, removing everything but the lowest bass. Let this lopassed signal trigger a ducking gate on the Lo-Air suboctave bus, ducking under the kick drum and low toms. Quick attack on the gate and the decay set to whatever sounds natural playing back. You shouldn't be able to hear the bass ducking, it's just there so the suboctave doesn't eat up all the sonic space in the mix. This with a bit of tweaking can result in really deep bass while keeping the punch of the kick.
Thank you, Anthony! There are so many incredible engineers that are learning skills today. We cannot wait to see how pro audio and music turns out under them
This is the best damn channel for music engineering/theory. Only here did I learn about the magic of tube microphones, tape machines and lesser known (but much better) converters. These videos have contributed more to my music than any other channel on RUclips. Keep it up Marc.
I do this with synths, even. Under a squelchy, or open bass sound, I often put a sine wave bass sound to support it. Works very well with TB303 and SH101 sounds, for instance, which lack the low a bit when tweaked.
big thanks Marc, honest and inspiring as always brother, life feels real good today its a sunny friday in cornwall, keep shnizzling warren, you and your team are a big help to my creative life
wow, never thought about this to spice up the low area. Its pretty workflow friendly and very easy for everyone to do and yes FabFilterOne is actually my subbass secret weapon, because most of the plugins don't sound that honest, even after processing them.
I had to do something very similar on a recent punk mix of mine. For whatever reason, they thought it was a good idea to do power chords on a 5-string bass. Absolutely murdered the whole bottom half of the mix. I ended up cutting everything below 300 Hz and really accentuated the pick attack. Fed that through some really gnarly distortion for character and replaced the low end with a synth bass similar to the one you used. Saved the whole project!
@@massivebeatzz I was both the producer and the mixing engineer on this record. Young band who had never been in the studio before, working on an incredibly limited budget. They were happy with the results and signed off on the masters. Been over a year now and nobody has noticed that I augmented the low end because it still sounds like a bass strumming chords.
Very cool! I’ve added bass patches from synths layered under the bass guitar but never thought of this method with converting a midi track. Genius thanks!
finally a trick that i came up with myself some time ago :) (although i'm playing/re-recording the bass via the keyboard...audio to midi is a nice idea too)
One day you'll have to make a video of your studio and equipment on RUclips, is this a new setup? I am insanely curious, I see so much amazing gear, what's the controller you have in front of you? Is that n SSL? Is it valuable with ProTools? Sorry for derailing the topic (which is golden BTW)
I've done this before on bass tracks that were just not right for the feel of the song. But...I didn't bother asking the artist, I just did it. As the saying goes, "It's easier to ask forgiveness that it is to get permission." :-) Thank you for all of your awesome videos.
Really enjoyed this video, but was really confused about "bottom air" bc as I've understood Air, it's usually a top end thing. Nonetheless, I was able to follow the tutorial. Thanks!!
Warren, could you please breakdown the sub bass of the new song "as it was" by Harry styles? I'm. Blown away in that the sub bass is pounding in my earphones and car but when I pulled up the track on my studio monitors and sub, virtually NO SUB BASS. the mix was clean and just present sub. How is this possible? What technique was used to achieve this?
Is Marc Latin? I was reading something today and it mentioned his name and called him a Latin producer. I mean, there could be another guy out there in the music business named MDN but I assumed it was him. I never pegged him as being Latin either. I kind of see it today now that I’m looking for it but it’s definitely not your typical Latino look for sure! Lol. Then there’s the possibility it meant he produces Latin music. IDK at this point. This video just popped up and the internal dilemma is fresh in my head so I figured I’d throw it out there. Yo Marc! Are you Latin? 😃
Yeah I can see why pro tools is the industry standard 😬 I mean why simple drag and drop like every other DAW when you can have time consuming drop down menus to convert to midi 😃 When will the professionals realise how unprofessional slo fools is 🤔
How is this a trick? You're adding another track. So for more bass you add another base track. I have a trick to make guitars sound bigger. Add more guitar tracks. Right?
I know you’re trying to be clever or even maybe funny, ha, however adding a sub bass that adds pure low end is not the same as adding another guitar to a guitar track now is it!

Hi warren, the last video with Marc is about 4 Months ago, do you know there are new videos coming with Marc ?
Dear Marc, I learn a lot from the videos you are a part of and I really appreciate all that you do to help the "younger generation"

Thanks, Martin! Hope you enjoy the course too!
Nice to hear from you Mark it's been a while. ✌
He was on the channel twice last week! We live Marc!
Wow! Thanks Marc! I can think of some songs this was probably done on, but had no idea till now. I loved that stuff too.
Let us know how it works in your mixes!
Thinking about that now too, wondering if it's used in a lot of The War On Drugs songs.
there we are...Friday....with the most interesting man in the world! That commercial must have been based on MDN!
Cool trick - It's definitely there nicely enhancing, completing the whole sound. Thanks!

you should try MBassador from melda productions. would be interested to hear your opinion on it vs the manual midi technique.

So high pass the bass guitar and add a synth bass to replace that low freq ?

Remixing Like A Pro
Haha indeed
nice trick! but why you make long bass notes instead of making sub bass following the rhythm of bass guitar?
gets too busy, too much movement in the low lows. It is just a bit of boost. Especially when that bass plays intervals (5ths etc).

Wouldn't it be easier to just play the root notes on a Midi keyboard? Why converting to Midi?
