  • John M. Phillips is an attorney licensed in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, New York, Washington, DC, Oklahoma, Texas and Illinois. He regularly appears as an expert on news shows. We invite you to learn more about us here.
John is originally from Mobile, Alabama, but made Jacksonville, Florida his home in 2001. He graduated from the University of Alabama, which is perennially one of the highest ranked public law schools in the southeast and was ranked 25th in the nation in a recent U.S. News Survey. He has obtained many million-dollar and multi-million-dollar verdicts and settlements on behalf of his clients, including one 2019 jury verdict of over $495 Million dollars, as well as changed the way that companies and governments operate. He has been consulted by government officials when they review important legislation. For instance, John was selected to help re-write Georgia’s citizen arrest statute after Ahmaud Arbery was shot and killed. Although he has represented celebrities and athletes, John’s time is mostly spent helping the injured get justice.
Almost a decade ago, John Phillips became one of the youngest lawyers to be Board Certified in Civil Trial Law by the Florida Bar. This allows him to be called an expert in civil trial law (personal injury, car accidents, civil rights). Board Certification requires years of advocacy at the highest level, additional peer review, substantial trial experience, hours of advanced seminars and a difficult full day exam. John will tell you, “Nothing worthwhile comes easy.”
Phillips can be seen in the Emmy award winning documentary, Armor of Light. He had a role in the film as the storyteller and lawyer for the family of Jordan Davis and was thanked from the stage by the film’s director Abigail Disney. He regularly seeks out opportunities to learn how to be a better lawyer, leader and father.
Phillips can frequently be seen on television news and has appeared in multiple documentaries and docudramas. Phillips was heavily featured in season two of the Netflix show, Tiger King, which follows his efforts to Free Joe Exotic. Joseph Maldonado-Passage is Phillips client.
In 2022, Phillips also obtained a record attorney’s fee against the Trump Campaign. Phillips represented Omarosa Manigault-Newman, who was sued for “disparaging” Donald Trump based on a non-disclosure agreement she signed. Phillips obtained a judgment holding the NDA’s terms invalid, award his firm attorney’s fees and on August 9, 2022, the Trump Campaign released everyone from the NDA’s terms. Phillips said, “We take cases we believe in. This wasn’t political. It was protecting whistleblowers, political speech and the First Amendment.”
More about John’s awards are listed at floridajustice.com/our-team/j... but he is one of the most acclaimed attorneys in America. He is AV-Preeminent rated and has won many awards for both his actions in the courtroom and in the community, including being named one of the 29 most influential people in northeast Florida and the Face of Justice on the First Coast. He is licensed to practice law in Florida, New York, Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Illinois, Oklahoma and Washington DC, and before the United States Supreme Court. He does so with passion and compassion.
In 2015, John was selected to give a TEDx talk on race and equality. It was one of the first speeches that TEDx broadcast live on its RUclips channel and it stands as one of the most watched talks in the State of Florida. He has also spoken at Howard University, at the NAACP Annual Meeting, at PeaceJam in Ghana, at many high schools and colleges and regularly gives seminars to other lawyers.
John was nominated by Jacksonville’s Mayor and confirmed by the City Council to Jacksonville’s Human Rights Commission. In addition to having an audience with multiple Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, John was invited to attend the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland.
The vast majority of John’s time is spent in his offices, working up cases for his clients and telling stories of people who have been injured or lost loved ones. Trial work is his passion. Good Morning America even filmed and broadcast portions of one of his trials in 2014. However, much of the work he does is unseen by cameras and done with a wonderful hand-picked staff.
John is married to his best friend, Angela, and is the father of three boys, Bennett, Weston and Johnathan. He has dived the great barrier reef, run with the bulls and loves to travel. However, he is happiest with his children in tow, attending Jacksonville Jaguar games and spending time with family and friends.

The real guest that needs to be on your show is the judge who ordered that the mother return Corey to his abusive dad, even though he had bruises from head to toe! That judge joins a large group of other judges who are left with blood on their hands because they do not have regard for the child’s safety despite all of the evidence that the mother brings forth. Something needs to be done about this!! 😡

The judge CLARIFIED, the “threats” that came so soon was NOT “threats” they were yes phone calls calling the monster a murder but it’s horsesht that any threats to their well-being. They are over dramatizing to defend their son’s decision to flee.

How in the heck does she say the defense attorney is "sharp." When he keeps saying multiple times to the jury, "What do I know? I'm just a country lawyer." I think if found guilty, the defendant could seek a mistrail. Because of his attorney implying to the jury his lack of skill & confidence in a murder trail & at the time upon his retaining his attorney, his misrepresentation of his skills as a crimal defense attorney in a murder trail. The best his attorney can do for the defendant is to seek a plea deal to 2nd degree manslaughter before it goes to a jury decision. Mom lied on cross by the judge saying he returned on April 4th, Easter, and took a flight back. When in fact there is evidence the rental car wasn't obtained until April 6th.

Doe this woman even know what she is talking about? There are 2 charges, his death has nothing to do with the treadmill and if she had actually listened to the pathologist she would have heard evidence of horrific abuse, resulting in a lacerated heart and liver. That abuse was inflicted the day he died and is what killed Cory, not the treadmill. Terrible journalism.

@@lynnebullen6850 he sustained injuries from the treadmill incident but they didnt cause his death, he was covered in bruises and marks, significant injuries after the treadmill ( and possibly the dad caused other injuries subsequently), the parents said they saw Corey after the treadmill incident and only saw a bruise on his face ( that was the last time they saw him alive 10 or 11 days before he died), his teacher saw marks/bruises on him in person, then on camera ( chris kept him off school and he didnt return), the teacher got a call from a CPS worker ( mum had reported suspected abuse of her son having seen the horrendous bruises and marks) and she told the worker she had seen marks on Corey, infact I believe she was asked to call a second CPS worker to report the same, that worker told mum to take Corey to a Dr so he could be examined, mum did this on April 1st ( she had to wait until she had her visitation with Corey), the Paediatrician examined Corey and was concerned about all the bruises and marks and sent him to a hospital for further investigation, mum had also filed for an emergency full custody order ( she had joint custody with the father but he had primary residency so Corey lived with him), judge denied her request but did state that Corey had to be presented within 7 days to a child abuse expert Dr. Mum took Corey still on April 1st to a 2nd hospital again Drs saw all his injuries, he had bloods etc, mum told them aswell she suspected Coreys dad was harming him, Coreys was discharged as his observations and bloods were normal. It was early hours of morning so she took him to her apartment to sleep, but dropped him back to his Dads at 9 on April 2nd ( i believe she filmed him walking towards/into his dads apartment, maybe to prove she had brought him back ?), Coreys dad took him to hospital later that day, he died around 5pm of contusions on his lung, lacerations to liver and heart, and internal bleeding. The autopsy ruled homicide. Expert pathologist for state claims that injuries happened within aprox 4 to 10 hours before his death, he appeared normal in the footage of mum dropping him off . They believe dad assaulted him when he got home . I think the dad was angry that the mum reported him for abuse that she applied for an emergency custody order, that Corey was going to have to be seen by an expert in child abuse, that CPS were involved, that shed taken him to the hospital and kept him overnight on a night when she didnt have overnight visitation, he was mad that he was going to get caught, and Corey unfortunately suffered for it.
