Certainly worth restoring such a rare piece. Replacing the floor and pans is a regular part of restoration. Doesn’t seem too rotten or rusted through otherwise. And the engine turns.

Just looked up prices for Isabella Coupés in Germany (my home base). Roughly 65k Euro for a perfect car, 40+k for a very good one and about 30k for a decent one (rate to the USD is more or less 1:1). This should make a restoration of this fine vehicle worthwhile. ;-)

The end of the Borgward Group is a shameful story. The Government of the state of Bremen (where Borgwards were built) claimed that Borgward was insolvent, and then effectively compulsorily acquired the company. They then side-stepped all schemes which might have saved the firm, putting the cars out of production and selling up the assets. All creditors were paid in full, proving that the company had never been insolvent after all - but governments that act improperly are always above the law. Borgward died a broken man in 1963. There is some evidence that other car makers were involved in the plot to destroy Borgward, but the full truth has not yet been revealed.

BMW also blocked their steal quota thereby eliminating the competition. They were great..and cheap...and successfully sold over the world. I rescued a 2dr sedan in New Zealand...sold it to a young guy who became a really good friend.

I think the transformation you’ve achieved is actually pretty incredible. Borgwards were beautiful, well engineered cars that were also a really good value for their time, it’s nice to see this one getting some love and I hope someone does a restoration on it… Although prices on these in good condition are in the $20,000.00 range, someone did an EV resto mod on one, and the style is so cool it would be a great project. I can’t wait to see the video on the Saab Sonnet in the background, and I’m excited to see what’s coming up!

Borgward’s are fantastic, full stop. Btw the licence plate is a German plate for cars that are exported. Z stands for Zoll (Customs)
It’s amazing how many people, here criticise a car they know absolutely nothing about. Borgward’s are hot property here in Europe, definitely worth restoring this gorgeous Isabella.

I have a Dinky toy model of this car. They stopped making these cars in 1961. It was held in high esteem in Germany. It was almost up there alongside Mercedes-Benz in terms of respect...and price. A nice touch is that oval German export plate. A fine detailing job!

Despite outward appearances this car is actually really in decent shape! These cars always need floors and inner/outer rockers. It's just a fact of life with them. Once you get those taken care of you have a beautiful car. Plus they look so good in black with that red interior. Usually they have this huge chrome bezel for the headlights. I've not seen the headlight setup on this car before and much prefer it! Someone will get an excellent project with this car and you've really brought out its beauty!

When I was 10 years old in 1967 a mechanic in my father's company finished his night shift at 7.oo in the morning. He was driving an Isabella. In light green. He drove me to school almost every morning. I still remember this car very well. The mechanic was a smoker. What impressed me at the time was the cigarette lighter in the Isabella. Not this lighter that you push in and then pops up after a while. But a lighter that somehow stuck to the dashboard and then began to glow visibly. Memories of a now old man. The Borgward-Story..... amazing. I suppose it is available in german only. But. Maybe that Americans can watch it with subtitles. All the best for this fantastic car!

The hardest part would be to find interior for the Isabella. It is extremely hard to find parts for borgward and when, you can pay in gold.
To the question regarding the plate, this is an old plate from the customs office in Germany to ship cars from Germany to another country country. Last plate was issued 1988.

It gives close realisation that the contents are eye openers and make us believe we better do for our car babies else 3 decades later once we're gone we'd be dismayed and shocked to see what our bloodlines might just do to them than cherishing and enjoying them like we did in a heartfelt manner.

These are considered very collectible “ Darlings “ for German Car aficionados! They are rare because of lack of parts for them. I always wanted one of the convertible models from the 50s. Now, a very good one commands a high value price!

Yes there are no parts for this car, the factory was sold to a mexican guy and everything even the last bolt sold to México. In México only last a few years and everything was lost.

It’s on the old German export plates The oval ones - officially "Ausfuhrkennzeichen" (export plates) - which were used from Nov 07, 1952 until the end of 1988. They were commonly also known als "Zollkennzeichen" (customs plates). They were issued for either exporting a car bought in Germany, or driving a foreign registered car in Germany.

And the word on the official stamp on the "Z" plate (for Zoll = customs) you tried to pronounce is "Hauptzollamt" (literally, main customs office, only we Germans make a compound word of such combinations) in Stuttgart, but it doesn't really make it a normal "Stuttgart" plate, which would have been then and still be rectangular and start with "S-..." The export plates are now rectangular as well (the oval ones were issued until 1988). In a red column on the right side, they state the date until the vehicle is insured in Germany, i.e. until it has to be shipped out of Germany or it cannot be used here legally anymore.

This indeed was a beautifull designed Car. I was a child when it was on the market in Germany. Well restored, it has it´s price in the market. It was also available as a convertible - beautifull too. The licence plate found is a German custom plate, requiered when you wanted to export a car and drive it to the shipping yard.

Borgward made one of the best german cars in the fifties. The metal work of the body was superb. the 1,5 l engine was very good. They was cheaper then a Mercedes dut the quality was the some. My father had one in the sixties. It`s the first car i remember to ride. It was a sedan. To me he was best looking that your model.

After you spray the cleaner on the windows, give them a good scrub with fine steel wool. It really cuts through the cigarette film that is in most old cars. It also adds sparkle to the glass after you polish it.

A few Borgwards ended up in New Zealand, and my wealthy aunt had an Isabella coupe in pink. My Dad’s family all lost their hair pigment at a very early age, so they all had snowy white hair in their thirties. My aunt died her hair pink to match her car. Would have been pretty outrageous in conservative New Zealand at the time.

As a couple of people have said, it is a late 1959 or 1960 model Coupe (due to the small grill diamond). Yes, it is worth saving and restoring. No, it is not going to be easy or cheap. Parts are extremely rare and hard to find and cost a mint when you do locate them. A fully functional Borgward is a joy to drive, even with that 4-speed column shift. The engine (1488 cc, 70 HP) is strong and peppy. Sterling Moss used a fuel-injected Borgward engine in his Formula 1 race cars in the early 1960s with much success. The dash knobs are the choke (left) and heat (right). The two slide levers at the bottom if the dash are the air control for each side's vent. The earlier model cars have a cigar lighter rather than a cigarette lighter. This uses a smaller socket and has the heating element exposed. Yes, it will burn the crap out of your finger or thumb because it takes a long time to heat up and you will stick your finger to it, usually just before it turns incandescent red and you now have a lovely spiral brand on your fingertip. The clock in the dash may still be a wind-up model. If so, it will keep excellent time as long as you remember to wind it once a week. This car does not have the optional Blaupunkt radio, which was an AM-FM-SW model. I have owned several of these, both coupe and sedan versions - loved them... I will be in touch about contact info...

    • @MichailKnoller
      @MichailKnoller 9 месяцев назад

Right. Apart from the fact that the clock works electrically - my Hansa 1500 of 1952 still got the wind - up clock...

I have had hundreds of Borgwards, I went to the dealer when they were new ,I have one with 19,000 original miles and one with a saxo mat Trans may be the only one in the world. I can tell you. They made these cars from 1957- 1961, in that time period they produced around 9500 coupes, 5 years, less than 2000 a year, they only made some prototypes in 1957,and made a small amount in 1961.
