- Clip from NHL Video's "Road To Victory: The '94 New York Rangers Story" documentary featuring legendary Ranger hero, Stephane Matteau, life-long Ranger fan, Marc Weissman, as well as many others involved in this memorable moment co-commentating on Stephane's epic wraparound goal during 2OT in Game 7 of the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals against the NJ Devils. Many have called this the greatest series ever played in NHL history as well as the greatest game ever played at Madison Square Garden. And keep in mind this was merely just to get to the Finals, let alone go on to win the Stanley Cup. Enjoy! :)
What does Howie rose say when he stubs his toe?
MATTEAU MATTEAU MATTEAU
🤣🤣🤣 good one!
LMAO! Good one! 😂
This game was touted by the New York Times as the single greatest sporting event in NYC history before it even HAPPENED, it was that big.
unbelievable game
It crazy that in the locker room Mateau told Eddie that he'll come back with the winning goal in 5 minutes. That is exactly what happened.
You got to admit,it was a cheap type goal though.
@@spiderreed350 that's how you win in the playoffs. Sometimes you gotta work hard and get that greasy goal
@@spiderreed350 what a weird thing to say
@@BeeBeeRacing wasn't a cheap goal, was a skilled, determination goal. He was getting hooked the entire time he was behind the net.
@@Surfer041 exactly! The opposite of a “cheap goal” it was brilliant!
I’m a grown ass man and I just cried like a baby watching that. I’ll never forget that feeling for as long as I live. I don’t think I ever saw my father as happy as he was that year. Thank you for uploading this.
My pleasure...and believe me, I do the same thing every time as well. ;)
What i would’ve given to be around for this
I'm a fan of neither team, and it's probably the greatest playoff series I ever watched
The Rangers were the better team but it was a taste of what was to come from the greatest goalie of this generation. #30
People forget the unbelievable stop Brodeur made off Messier on an amazing chance earlier in that second OT. Or Richters unbelievable lucky swipe away right before Matteau’s winner. I mean it doesn’t get any better than that game or period.
agree with the greatness of the series, disagree with brodeur who benefitted greatly by the devils trap, defensive style of play which transformed the league from 1993-2004 into a slow motion, clutch and grab fest that killed ratings and the league would have to make changes to survive in the millenium!
@@jamessollazzo4860 This statement is absolutely perfect and I couldn't agree more. #30 10 years later for the Rangers would end up being the far superior goalie. My biggest regret as a ranger fan was that he never got one. 2014 still hurts
WAKE UP! The greatest Goalie ever is Dominic Hasek!
Goosebumps! I was there that night and I've been to MSG dozens of times over my life time. That was even louder than Game 7 of the Finals. I truly believe that. It was a moment I will NEVER forget. The greatest playoff series that I will perhaps ever see.
There will never be a goal call better than this. It’s the best call in hockey possibly sports history
Awesome video
Coming from a devs fan, most underrated rivalry in the league
For Quite A While The RANGERS Were The DEVILS Kryptonite In The Playoffs! ;-)
@@markpalio4411 Also the canes somewhat, at least 2002, 2006, and 2009.
I'll never forget this goal.
Born and raised in NYC. Town was electric through the entire run. One of the greatest sports years ever in the city.
Not going to lie, I tear up every time I watch that Matteau goal! That was without question the best sports fan moment of my life, and it was only the Conference Finals! Will never ever forget it. The insanity of Game 6 added so much to the monumental energy built up in Overtime of this Game 7. I am so thankful that I got to experience this moment. “Matteau! Matteau! Matteau! Stephane Matteau!”
Same here. Heck, I do the same thing when Leetchie scores on his spin-o-rama. My all-time fav player coming thru when it matters most. Love it. 🏒😉💙
I will never ever forget this still gives me chills
Nolan Nichols me too
yep.. strong emotions when I watch it. it was the most glorious moment in sports for me. I was younger and SUPER into the Rangers at the time. that moment is imprinted in my brain.
Still sounds great all these years later. Thanks, Howie, for a great call on that winning goal!
Damn near 28 years later and still brings a tear to my eye. I hope it's not another 54 years before the Rangers win another cup.
94 win.
ratelle broken ankle. Ulf nilsson broken ankle and just so many other painful painful chapters finally erased. THIS STANLEY CUP RUN..JUST SO GREAT...and if only so many other people wouldve been around to see it.
I can’t believe I just met this guy at my school today we watched this video in a classroom, sitting RIGHT next to him
I had that call as my greeting on my answering machine the entire summer of 94!
samiam261 the best!!!
samiam261 And I have Rosen’s win call. “The Waiting is Over! The NY Rangers are the Stanley Cup Champions!”
Same here. One night i got home frome work to 6 messages. The first 5 were hang ups, the 6th was a message from from the guy who initially dialed the wrong number and then kep hitting redial to hear the message.
@@ronaldgiordano2070 Awesome!
The 1994 Stanley Cup playoffs was easily one of my all-time favorite memories. I was 9, and just OBSESSED with the Rangers. My dad and uncle took me to the ticker tape parade and it was just one of the happiest moments of my life. I have the whole Rangers championship VHS (I converted it to DVD a few years ago) memorized word for word. Also the 1998, 99, and 00 Yankee championship tapes. Let's go New York!
Howie Rose: MATTEAU! MATTEAU! MATTEAU ! Stephane Matteau! And the Rangers have one more hill to climb, baby! The Mt. Vancouver! THE RANGERS IS IN THE FINALS!!!
THERE BEEN MAY GREATS 7 GAMES --- BASEBALL FOOTBALL---I HAVE SEEN MANY ---BUT FOR MY MONEY BEST 7 GAME SERIES I EVERY SAW
+rpags226 Agreed. Most consider this the most exciting 7 game series in NHL history. Yough to argue.
I would say that Stepan's game 7 winner against the Caps in 2015 was pretty close. Not exactly this, but pretty close.
+Tim S nothing compared to matteaus game 7 winner sorry
... Matteau behind the net- swings it in front!- He scores! Matteau! Matteau! Matteau! Stephane Matteau! And the Rangers have one more hill to climb, baby! It's mount Vancouver! The Rangers are headed to the Final!
lol i was just thinking that too
I've been a Rangers fan since 80'. All those years of having to suffer especially that 86' team and my personal favorite of the 92' team. To finally get to the SCF was elation. Especially in a playoffs that included a sweep of the Islanders was special. I was still heartbroken for losing Amonte and Gartner. Sad that they weren't a part of it.
one of the greatest hockey games ever and I didn't have a dog in the fight
iconic moment in hockey. Give me chills every time I watch it.
"And he said 'If you could do that, that would be great.'" lol
Greatest hockey game ever!
Zelepukin scores with 7 seconds left to tie it.
Then Matteau in double ot.
Holy heart attack, Batman!
Unreal series tbh. Best i've seen.
Yeah, Zelepukin had me Pukin.I'm a fan of neither, (Isles,Bruins) but I hate the Rangers more than the Devils..
@@11DNA11 only because your a Blue shirts fan.
@@spiderreed350
Nope. I've seen a fuckton of hockey since 1990, when i started watching it. And this is by far the best series there is. Every game was an absolute nailbiter.
@@11DNA11 I've been watching since 1972, your rite,it was a good series for sure.I just didn't and don't like either team.
1994 was also the last year Conference & Stanley Cup Finals games teams were allowed their own telecasts. 1995-Present they've all been exclusive to the National Television partners.
I wish it was still like that
james molinaro Ditto
And 2011 was the last year that the second round could be aired by local telecasts. Now a days it's only the first round, then national guys.
Granted, I think Doc Emrick is probably the best at what he does, but local telecasts are always better than the national guys because it's from the heart. And any broadcast with Pierre and Milbury is awful.
Doc is awful in his own annoying way, using such absurd $100, non-hockey related words like pitchforked, periphery and knifed. And for a so-called local guy back when he was with the Devils, Emrick gave one of THE most uninspired Stanley Cup winning calls to date. "Championship to NJ. The Devils win the Stanley Cup." Seriously? That's all you can come up with for a once Mickey-Mouse organization's 1st ever Cup win?! Please. So embarrassing. :(
Marc Weissman Yeah I can see where he would annoy people like that. He is no Gary Thorne for sure. And Eddie O is no Bill Clement.
Matteau, Stepan, now Panarin OT in Game 7 is our time.
Kane.
Incredible unbelievable how time flies 30 years ago now we are in 2024
It’s crazy how much talent there was on that 94 Rangers team. Five future Hockey Hall of Famers: Mark Messier, Brian Leetch, Glenn Anderson, Jarri Kurri and Sergei Zubov, with Mike Richter making the US Hockey Hall of Fame.
It took all that and an incredible will to win to break the most infamous curse in hockey history at that time. I saw it happen...and it was AWESOME.
Indeed it did. FYI, Kevin Lowe was the 5th future HOFer on the '94 team. Jari Kurri, while also a future HOFer, didn't become a Ranger until 2 years later.
Enormous talent on both teams
Love watching this every now and again, still get chills. Today's NHL, not so much. How do you ruin such a great sport? Turn it into the ice follies that's how.
VHS!!! The entire playoff run... Bing bang boom NYI & WAS, but the savor of excitement is the ECF vs NJD followed by the circus colored Vancouver Canucks. The Russian Rocket, Pavel Bure (breakaway(s)-same year mind you, Allstar game, along with the penalty shot in the finals. Same move and the same super BURN full split denial pad save by Richter!!!! Richter -2 Bure ZERO!
Awesome video. One of the best.
Great memories! 1994! what a great year for me! Let's go RANGER'S!!
“My arm is thriving”. I think he meant throbbing
"It was twenty years ago today . . ."
Richard Smith Sergeant Pepper taught the band to play?
Howie’s call of Matteau….Matteau….
Matteau is the greatest call in the history of the New York Rangers.
Watching this on the ipad and iphone what a huge difference in technology. I can imagine if we had today's technology 20 yrs ago how nice it would of looked. I remember the old antenna tv I use to have watching this and looking at my 60 inch flat screen HD LG TV now today. I say to myself why couldn't we have these tv's and these new digital electronic ipad and iphones 20 yrs ago hahahahaha. Still the "90 were the best era. LETS GO RANGERS!! I really do hope they win the cup it would look so great on the ipad, iphone and my flat screen 60 inch HD tv.
besst NHL playoff run ever seen. Its extremely eerie how Mike Keenan just seemed to predict everything from saying we are gonna win the cup to trading for Matteau who would score the goal to get the rangers to the finals!
I'm not a Rangers' fan but so many fans were cheering for the Rangers if for no other reason to see the pain of their diehard fans go away. I will never forget that goal. It is certainly one of the greatest goals in NHL history.
Lol to Trautwig telling the lady "Don't ever go to another one because it won't come close to this"... wrong! Stepan game 7 Vs Caps was just as good
It was one of the greatest hockey games I’ve ever seen. So many great players (HOF’ers) were involved in that game. It’s hard to believe this game was played almost 30 years ago. Probably in the top 5 greatest moments in MSG history.
How my 3 year old son fast asleep in his crib upstairs didn’t wake up when I was screaming and banging on the paneled walls of my den I’ll never know.
The most famous sports call in NY sports history.....after Bobby Thompsons homerun call of course.....
not sure if you still respond to comments, but i just noticed something. ive watched this documentary in its entirety about 8 times in the last month. (die-hard ranger fan lmao) and a loooong time ago i saw this on youtube. i never realised who uploaded this. marc weissman? THE marc weissman thats in this documentary?👀
I remember talking to my devils (all in good nature) I have only 1 thing 2 say MATEUE MATEUE MATEUE!
It was an absolute religious experience for me. I was born on that night for the first time. I am not worthy to watch it, yet I still wish it could be in HDTV.
i just got chills watching this again. what a game, what a memory. all those years of suffering finally paid off. to me, eventually winning the cup was almost a let down compared to that because we knew the devils were the only team that could stop us that year. kudos to the canucks for making the finals a 7 game affair but they had the weight of destiny and 54 years of cup starvation working against them.
WERE BACK TO ECF
james molinaro and once again... down 3-2. I can't take it!!
There are a lot of cup finals in history and i think the 94 final was the best. Both teams and fan bases respect each other even to this day over how the SCF went...
Ed Olczyk - "I remember just grabbing his stick[Matteau]...and putting my lips on his blade a little bit..." Who'da thunk hockey was so sexual?
Howie Rose let me down, traitor, I thought he was an Islanders fan for years until this, ugh,at least were both Met fans,I think, lol.
Greatest call of all time and it's not even close.
Absolutely!!
I wasn't even alive at the time but I STILL GET CHILLS!
New York Islanders worst day ever.
That was his second overtime winner…in that series.
What a great night. Kinda reminds me of...LAST NIGHT when Dom Moore scored the winning goal to send us to the cup again!
WATCHING THIS FIR GOOD LUCK TONIGHT GAME 7 RANGERS DEVILS
It's funny but even though the Devils & the Isles have more cups, nobody cares except for the 500 fans they both have. Sorry boys but New York and northern Jersy belong to the NY Rangers, always did always will.
No u are wrong the rangers have 4 cups the islanders have 4 and the devils have 3 and no matter what i say to devil fans all they say is well the rangers have been in the league a lot longer then the devils well if the devils r soo good why dont they have more cups then the rangers or islanders LETS GOOOO RANGERS!!!!!!!!!
JIGGY GAMES Thats actually a legit reason to have fewer cups. The devs have only been around since the 80's and have been FAR more successful compared to the rangers who have been around since the 20's. Plus the rangers won 2 of their cup when there was only 5 other teams to compete against. Devils > Rangers
Dom no: the Rangers won their third cup in a league with 8 teams (New York Americans and Montreal Maroons) and there first two in a league with 10 teams (Ottawa Senators and Philadelphia Quakers). And if you draw back to the Colorado Rockies and Kansas City Scouts, the Devils actually go back a ways.
JSimp140 Oops yea your right. Didn't even think about the Rockies and Scouts lol. Even so, Devils still have a better resume than most teams considering how long they've been around, and how many teams to compete against.
devils & islanders are way more accomplished given their much shorter tenure but have no where near the same fan support. a ranger playoff game at MSG is one of the most electrifying experiences i've ever had while a devil playoff game at the old arena (i still call it "the byrne") was about as exciting as going to a wake (although the devil fans are better than the nets' fans used to be in that building). i have not gone to the new arena in Newark but hopefully its an improvement as far as crowd noise and excitement factor is concerned.
Great video! LGR!!
MATEUE! MATEUE! MATEUE! THANX HOWIE ROSE 4 A GREAT CALL
HEY! HEY! HEY!HEY! HEY!😂
My Toe! My Toe! My Toe!
20 years ago and we again have one more hill to climb. Will it be Mount LA or Mount Chitown? Regardless, we want the cup!
A Ranger fam since 1969. I will never forget it!!!
In today's NHL, Niedermeyer gets called for hooking, no questions asked. back then, nothing,
It was a fluke goal, it was NOT a wrap around. Matteu was trying to center the pass from behind the net, it hit off Marty's paddle and in between his own legs. It was Marty's sloppiness that cost them that OT goal. Too bad.
Billy C still counts
Most overtime goals are not pretty try watching a few games
Those French Canadien players are good. You always want some on your team.
Another Stanley Cup Playoffs for the Blueshirts! Let's do this, boys!
He came to my school today!!
The fix was on in the final
2 more hills to go.. Cmon! LET'S GO RANGERS!
Pens fan here, rooting for your team. I want to see the King finally get a ring.
He deserves it
MATTEAU , MATTEAU MATTEAU
Gd times
I met Matt day last year he signed my white jersey I shook hi s hand told him we will never forget you
back when hockey fever in NY reached an all time high. At the time of the finals, Viacom owned the garden and it would be the only time in corporate history that their stock price improved based on the revenue from the Rangers despite the Knicks losing the NBA finals to the Rockets as well as Forrest Gump from Paramount. The theater near the garden was named the Paramount Theater at MSG where i saw A Christmas Carol. When Dolan bought part of the team along with ITT, things turned sour.
Hi...
I'M HOWIE ROSE!
His arm is "thriving" lol, I love NY
lol
I meet him today at my school he is the part of the legacy progam.he gave us autographs
i met him hes such a cool guy!
Not only is he a great hockey player but the nicest down to earth person you can ever meet !! So glad he is part of my family 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Emotional intense game tears of joy incredible unbelievable crowd , the whole world was watching,
This is honestly a time and moment that forever stole my heart ❤️, so amazing and just euphoric. Sports is something that truly humbles and teaches humility. That 1994 New York Rangers Hockey Team beyond Words what a moment in time unforgettable and I always will love The New York Rangers
Great show, I've probably seen it a million times. Also was there 425 row C seat 12
My Parents remember this moment so well! My Family and I were in our Car leaving the Mets game listening to this game on the Radio! As soon as Matteau scored here, the entire Shea Stadium Parking lot was honking their horns as we were waiting to leave!
Great play by fetisov there not using the boards to clear the puck
I always tear up when I watch that goal but I'm an old hockey fan and nothing quite compares with USA 4 - USSR 3.
Stephan Matteau never has to pay for a drink, meal or lap dance again in New York after that day.
I've waited so long for that.. Better than 1979 beating the fish-sticks but lost to Montreal in finals....
i feel crushed this year being a ranger fan
Fetisov plays it cross ice......oops....thats a buckner moment!!!!
I met this guy in my class
If sports betting was a thing back then, somebody would hav won millions if they betted on Matteau scoring the winning goal
Just an extra thanks to Jeff Beukeboom for a driving the puck deep with a shot that could have shattered bones.
Interviewing “Rangers fans since ‘73” like they couldn’t find someone that actually had something to do with the game?
interesting how they know what's going to happen, very supernatural, but then again, what is creation anyway?
Dumb trade....should of kept gartner..amonte ..weight. dumb
THE BEST MOMENT EVER
Pretty gay what eddie said
Matteau!! Almost 25 years later I still get chills.
This goal was the most relevant thing to happen to the Devils franchise ever. They didn't get this much attention after those cups nor did anyone care about the ot goal that send them to the final that was scored by Adam-whats-his-face.
Who did it better? Rose, Thorne or Rosen?
Howie Rose, bar none. Right up there with Russ Hoges, "The Giants win the pennant.". Rosen call was good. Thorne almost blew it with ""1940 is history". I'm like, they didn't win it yet! Don't jinx them!
@smoothjazzandmore2 IKR. They still had to get through John Shorthouse’s Canucks. The latter might’ve had a disappointing regular season, but they still could’ve won.
