Yup, that's the Souls game engine all right. Since day 1 it's been choking out CPUs. I always blamed it on being optimised for the PS3, and that never really changed. I remember when I first noticed it, when I had to switch out GPUs from a lacklustre GPU and a good one and it made little difference in performance. Kinda amazing really, that Quad core Q9400 was able to play DS1, 3 and Sekiro with pretty much similar performance between games(20-30 fps). I wonder if I could have gotten Elden Ring to run on it.
At 9:48, the mod completely killed the scene. You are supposed to see the carriage fully lit, no matter if it makes sens with lighting around. It is both an art direction decision and level design. The carriage is a beacon to give the indication to player that this is the right path.
Yeah it sucks, people that emulate games don't know what they're missing in terms of details and effects because of the hacks used to get better performances
This is kinda the case with all fan-led lighting and texture projects. They're all primarily playtested by hardcore fans who have a decent memory of level layouts and item locations, so "legibility" for new players just isn't prioritized as often as fidelity.
@@marrow94 It's a mod and is not tied to emulation. Out of the box emulation (with 60 fps patch) is currently already 10x better than playing it on a ps4 or ps5.

I was gonna say this too. Some of the intentional color choices are blotted out by being too dark. I've never played this game, but aside from the res and frame rate, I preferred the PS4 version due to the color.
Oh fair. To me it looked like quite a subtle improvement and adds depth to the image but I do get that it’s not something that everyone will enjoy. I’m a big dark souls guy but haven’t yet played Bloodbourne (waiting for a solid 60fps, soon!) so maybe that’s why?
Completed the game for the first time + dlc on shadps4 ver 0.5 a few weeks ago, it was good, played well, few crashed and texture issues but extremely playable
@Deliveredmean42 If you are a fan of Bloodborne you don't want Bluepoint anywhere near it, unless it's a simple remaster. The remake of DeS looked pretty but the art design was awful.
Horizon sold 25 million copies in two years, Bloodborne sold 7 million in a decade. As much as everyone here likes to think they're the center of the world, the fact remains that Elden Ring is the first actually popular Fromsoft game.
@gitnjur Horizon fans are genuinely moronic. They actually think this franchise has moved 30 million copies. Horizon has just been carried by bundles. So many millions of PS4s and PS5s were bundled with this trash that as long as the system was selling the game would too regardless of whether people wanted to play it or not.
That's the irony.. no one asked for them, and what tf with remastering games that just been released, that's how you know the state of gaming, milking new shit for newer shit.
@gitnjurI agree, and without GRRM's involvement - even though I love Elden Ring and I'm sure it would have still been a great game without GRRM, I don't think it would have become as popular ..
Crazy how the PC community can put emulate Bloodborne within almost a year while Sony still after so many years still has not announced anything about a PC release, this is why emulation is amazing
It's becausw Sony is being strategic in locking up this milking cow for another day. A complete native 4K remaster could yet come true someday. Imagine this game with HDR and path tracing RT.
@@tyty0071 Sony hates this IP for some reason. FromSoft and Miyazaki stated multiple times they would be interested in a remaster or remake, yet Sony never showed interest. They would rather release 10 more Horizon Zero title than giving BB a shot.
tbh Bloodborne is one of the few games where I actually didn't mind that effect. I think it adds to the nightmarish aesthetic, those types of visual distortions are typical of nightmares. I felt the same about its use in The Evil Within. It bothers me more in games that are aiming for realism.
I don't understand Sony, they've already brought Spiderman, GOW, TLOU, Uncharted, Horizon, Returnal all to PC but somehow can't port the FromSoftware games for some reason. It's literally money sitting on the table.
I just finished BB on ShadPS4... Beside Laurence in the DLC not loading I had no issues whatsoever. Also I briefly played it on PS4 at my buddies place when it released and I remember the excrutiating loading times.. On PC with emulation running on a modern SSD it literally loaded in 3 seconds :D

They later did manage to cut the loading times significantly at least. Though they were still fairly long on PS4. Or even 5. Then again. Would expect quite a lot of waiting with a 2.5"HDD in a PC as well..😹
Just started finally playing this legendary game like this a couple wks ago. The key for me has been incorporating the awesome software recommended by this very channel: Lossless Scaling. I let the emulator render the native 1080, then upscale to my preferred 1440 (avoids those crashed from the resolution mods), as well as interpolate the 60fps patch up to 120, this program also gets HDR working for me. Tried some reshades, ended up just keeping a couple sharpening filters from the Veil of Yharnam Reshade that I feel do some heavy lifting on their own for like 3fps cost on my system. Ends up gorgeous!
It has definitely improved since I tried it back in September and posted it on my channel. Thanks for the heads up on the Nexus mods for further improvements.
It's truly amazing how much it has improved in such a short amount of time...I tried it a couple months ago and it would crash nearly everytime I would swing my weapon...But now, I just finished a full playthrough including the DLC and only had one crash the entire time...Man once they get the higher resolution patches stable i'm going to be a happy camper!
I just finished a ps5 pro playthrough 2 weeks ago and this is night and day. If I haven’t just played it and the dlc I’d have definitely replayed this on pc right now. This is definitely a game I’ll be playing via imitator in 6 months so it will be a bit fresher and not so burned out.
What did he say? That Bullshit about Sony having to much respect for Miyazaki and not releasing anything Bloodborne because of that? It contradicts everything Miyazaki has stated. Great video Tom. Another benefit to the mod if I recall Fromsoftserve correctly is a fix to the overly 'wet' look of the game by essentially fixing the maths used for the material specularity or something to that effect!
Been playing this on ShadPS4 since December, has been an incredibly stable experience, now in NG+ And still enjoying the frequent updates and fixes to the emulator, really damn good
The crashes Tom was getting seems like he ran out of RAM. Is he using only 16GB? As you can see from the footage submitted by the other user, the emulation was using over 16GB of RAM, so if Tom only has 16GB, it's going to crash.
It doesn't seem to depend on ram. I monitored the ram usage and it still crashes in 1 hour or 2 even with 32 Gb of ram without ever saturating it even remotely
Like the rest of you I have been waiting to be able to play this game in buttery 60FPS since I finished it on the PlayStation! Big respect for everyone involved in making this happen! Can't wait to throw my controller at walls again!
@VariantAEC eh, it ran exactly like this on my ryzen 7 7840hs and a 4060 laptop, I am sure the average setup can run it, add lossless scaling and you get 100+ fps gameplay
It's a locked 60fps for me on the latest nightly build. Hardware is a ryzen 5600x and 4070 super with 16gb of RAM. Also using lossless scaling framegen 2X with LS1 upscaling so the game effectively looks like 120fps. I can't believe how far we've come.
@brucepreston3927 There are but I wouldn't say they're too distracting. You get a bit of distortion at the edges of the screen when panning the camera fast and the compass at the top of the UI has noticeable ghosting. Minor drawbacks imo for the huge boost in visual clarity.
I'm really not a fan of the mod displayed in the video here. The colors and brightness seem so...muted. Idk. I know the sometimes blinding fucking lights in Bloodborne can be annoying but it just gives a nice sense of contrast that isn't there with the mod
I'll definitely try this emulated version. I never could finish the original game because of all the frame pacing issues and blurry ambient. I just get sick every time I try to play the game again. Thanks to the modders who are allowing a lot of people to enjoy this awesome game
Just finished the main game and haven't seen frames dip below 45fps outside of loading areas. Average fps was typically 55-60fps. This was with a 3080 (10gb) and 5800x3d at 1080p. The old hunters dlc is a different story. Framerate is really struggling in the opening zone. The quality of experience during the main campaign was fantastic though, and I think this is my new favorite Fromsoft title. Fantastically realized game all around. So glad the emulation has improved to this point, because my crappy eyes and reactions could never handle the native framerate
Bluepoint are good with optimisation but very questionable with art design and considering Bloodborne already had a lot of cut content already I can only imagine how much Bluepoint would miss out.
I played through Bloodborne for the first time ever on shadps4 and had an amazing time with it. I did this with an old i5-4690k and a GTX 1060 and despite being on way earlier builds that crashed often, I was able to run it at 1080/30 solid. TBH maybe you're just not sensitive to input latency, i wish i had this power lol.
@arnham True, I have mine pretty high for a more consistent look. But I really haven't felt any more latency than in the original game on PS4.
All their games always had latency built in between action and movement, except Sekiro and maybe Elden Ring. But I used it on lies of p as well and there were no issues either. I played with and without LS on that and it literally felt no different
i just finished my first full playthrough on the emulator. since i fell in love with bloodborne almost 10 years ago i wanted this game on pc and especially at 60fps. even tho the developers probably wont read this i really just want to say: thank you for making my dream come true. its been a treat and i will have countless more playthroughs of this game, finally in the way i always wanted to play it. i had a hand full of crashes throughout my playthrough but thats it. played on a 7700k and a 3060 with 16gb of ram. now thats impressive!
pls hook me up with the files to play the game, i've sold my PS4 collection and PS4 in 2018, when i moved to PC gaming, now i have no way to play the mod

@@MaxIronsThird firmware isnt necessary. i played without one
Lol me too
Yup, that's the Souls game engine all right.
@@marrow94 it still on early phases so running with all effects its just not possible

Guys, we have to support massively this type of videos. There is a huge part of gamers that we still want (we have been waiting almost 10 years) this game remasted is PC.
Excellent Tom, glad to see your impressions
Lance just got hit with a DMCA for the 60fps patch, gg. Emulator soon 😭
It's working almost perfectly in 2K and 4K now. It's beyond amazing.
I feel like the lighting in the mod is worse though everything is darker.
I was gonna say this too.
Some of the intentional color choices are blotted out by being too dark. I've never played this game, but aside from the res and frame rate, I preferred the PS4 version due to the color.
It looks like complete crap
It's only because of reshade -- the actual mod itself is amazing
Oh fair. To me it looked like quite a subtle improvement and adds depth to the image but I do get that it’s not something that everyone will enjoy.
I’m a big dark souls guy but haven’t yet played Bloodbourne (waiting for a solid 60fps, soon!) so maybe that’s why?
Reshade is optional. You can use everything else in it.
Really impressive work from modders, chapeau!
Completed the game for the first time + dlc on shadps4 ver 0.5 a few weeks ago, it was good, played well, few crashed and texture issues but extremely playable
I played all of DS games on m+kb, is there m+kb support for this?
If Sony patched this game to support 60fps on the ps5, I'd buy a ps5 just for it. Bloodborne is in my top 5 games ever and I'd love to play it at 60.
spread it!!! put the pressure on Sony!!! shame on Sony for just totally ignoring the community!!
What a waste of talent on Bluepoint... They really miss the mark and making their second team work on a now canceled Live Service game.
ikr how hard would it be to at LEAST release either a true 4k or 60 fps patch?
@Deliveredmean42 If you are a fan of Bloodborne you don't want Bluepoint anywhere near it, unless it's a simple remaster.
The remake of DeS looked pretty but the art design was awful.

Ah, you were at my side all along. My true mentor. My guiding moonlight.
Amazing video, thank you Digital Foundry.
Sony gives us remasters that no one asked for (Horizon Zero Dawn and Last of Us 2) but ignores the remasters everyone has been asking for.
Didn't you know? We're stupid and don't know what we want.
I love these videos! Thank you for covering this in such detail
We do NOT want to see improved lightning (detail loss) and anti aliasing (blur filter).
Thanks for covering this. Nice to get more eyes on it.
i think this video absolutely smashed shadps4's website server
Adaxum’s focus on real-world applications makes it a standout project. Joined the presale today!
Why would they waste money doing that when their line up of amazing live-service games will rake in the dough instead?
oh wait...
@@tyty0071 Sony hates this IP for some reason. FromSoft and Miyazaki stated multiple times they would be interested in a remaster or remake, yet Sony never showed interest. They would rather release 10 more Horizon Zero title than giving BB a shot.

Great news and great video Tom!
Turning off chromatic aberrration... Mayozaki is rolling in his proverbial grave somewhere.
tbh Bloodborne is one of the few games where I actually didn't mind that effect. I think it adds to the nightmarish aesthetic, those types of visual distortions are typical of nightmares. I felt the same about its use in The Evil Within. It bothers me more in games that are aiming for realism.

Hi Tom. Suggestion, the thumbnail should say ‘won’t’ instead of ‘can’t’. Sony just doesn’t want to remaster the game. Good video!
Welcome back, Tom.
I don't understand Sony, they've already brought Spiderman, GOW, TLOU, Uncharted, Horizon, Returnal all to PC but somehow can't port the FromSoftware games for some reason. It's literally money sitting on the table.
They most likely do not have the in-house talent to undertake such a task.

It's truly amazing how much it has improved in such a short amount of time...I tried it a couple months ago and it would crash nearly everytime I would swing my weapon...But now, I just finished a full playthrough including the DLC and only had one crash the entire time...Man once they get the higher resolution patches stable i'm going to be a happy camper!
fromsoftserve finally getting a shout from a large channel. bout time.
It would have been nice to share the links to the shadps4 build and the mods 😅
I love this emulation videos, keep coming
I find lossless scaling helps me a lot instead of getting 50 - 60fps with lossless scaling I am getting 250fps
And now make a screenshot and look at any generated frame xD
I just finished a ps5 pro playthrough 2 weeks ago and this is night and day. If I haven’t just played it and the dlc I’d have definitely replayed this on pc right now. This is definitely a game I’ll be playing via imitator in 6 months so it will be a bit fresher and not so burned out.

This has been such a blessing, playing for first time and @ Fishing Hamlet rn :)
I bought this game when I first bought a PS4. I found it unplayable due to the frame rate. Might look into this

With Shuhei Yoshida's statement on Bloodborne's destiny on PS5 and future HW, I'm feeling more forgiving about not having heard any news yet..!
What did he say? That Bullshit about Sony having to much respect for Miyazaki and not releasing anything Bloodborne because of that? It contradicts everything Miyazaki has stated. Sony hates Bloodborne for some reason and if we don't get any news for it's 10th Anniversary then we know that anything Bloodborne is dead and hopeless.
@@SpikeyfiedLetsPlay Sony literally just used Bloodborne in a 30th anniversary trailer, they clearly don't hate the game and haven't forgotten about it
@CorruptedDogg if you mean the "It's about... Persistance" meme, well. What has come since then? Nothing. They mention it from time to time but there never comes anything from it. It's just a giant middle Finger from Sony and we keep chasing the bait that they throw at us. It's like an Abusive relationship where Sony keeps mentioning Bloodborne just to go radio silent for months after that. PlaystationDE's X Account also keeps trolling the Bloodborne Community and mentioned Bloodborne in a couple of Tweets. I'm well aware what they are doing and i don't like it. Did you say $70 remaster? Because I think I heard $70 remaster
Great video Tom. Another benefit to the mod if I recall Fromsoftserve correctly is a fix to the overly 'wet' look of the game by essentially fixing the maths used for the material specularity or something to that effect!
Ahhh, Kos, or some say Kosm... Do you hear our prayers?
Will be looking forward for future, more stable, releases.
Emulation is the best thing that has ever happened to gaming, playing Demon souls ps3 right now.
Better version of the game
Im pretty sure Sony heard gamers , they just don't care.
Amazing. Going to wait for more polished version but damn this is great.
60fps AND TAA? I need this now

I hadn’t checked PS4 emulation but maybe it’s time.
This is a special project. PS4 emulation is still nowhere near this level all around.
@@VariantAEC That's a shame, but yeah I was expecting it to take a while longer to be playable with most games and PCs.
@@Grumpy_ol_Gamer
This PS4 game is barely holding 60FPS on an RTX 4080 and a premiere Intel CPU that is only 2 years old.
@VariantAEC eh, it ran exactly like this on my ryzen 7 7840hs and a 4060 laptop, I am sure the average setup can run it, add lossless scaling and you get 100+ fps gameplay
The 12600k is mid-range and over 3 years old. The RTX4080 is unnecessary, a 3060 can play the game at PS4 settings just fine.
Wow this is truly impressive!
It's a locked 60fps for me on the latest nightly build. Hardware is a ryzen 5600x and 4070 super with 16gb of RAM. Also using lossless scaling framegen 2X with LS1 upscaling so the game effectively looks like 120fps. I can't believe how far we've come.
Are there many artifacts when using frame gen? I have been thinking about trying it out...
@brucepreston3927 There are but I wouldn't say they're too distracting. You get a bit of distortion at the edges of the screen when panning the camera fast and the compass at the top of the UI has noticeable ghosting. Minor drawbacks imo for the huge boost in visual clarity.
2:55 looks like an Ubisoft job application pitch.
0:29 or Ps4 Pro update

I'm really not a fan of the mod displayed in the video here.
The colors and brightness seem so...muted. Idk. I know the sometimes blinding fucking lights in Bloodborne can be annoying but it just gives a nice sense of contrast that isn't there with the mod
"Autoexposure" I honestly think its better now, the old lighting was basically broken
The mod completely ruins Bloodbornes atmosphere. It looks terrible. Not sure what DF was smoking when they praised it at the end.
@@chris42069 it absolutely was broken, but man did it do a good job at building a very specific atmosphere that the mod ruins imo
I'll definitely try this emulated version. I never could finish the original game because of all the frame pacing issues and blurry ambient. I just get sick every time I try to play the game again. Thanks to the modders who are allowing a lot of people to enjoy this awesome game
Since Ps4 is X86, emulation should be easier, right? Less of a layer
Yep!
Same with Xbox One and Series X/S
Just finished the main game and haven't seen frames dip below 45fps outside of loading areas. Average fps was typically 55-60fps. This was with a 3080 (10gb) and 5800x3d at 1080p. The old hunters dlc is a different story. Framerate is really struggling in the opening zone. The quality of experience during the main campaign was fantastic though, and I think this is my new favorite Fromsoft title. Fantastically realized game all around. So glad the emulation has improved to this point, because my crappy eyes and reactions could never handle the native framerate
Why the colors are looking muted and, dark on the emulator ? Also, some materials look like they lost their reflective properties, for example 9:48 .
The emulator is a WIP
is the modded version with dynamic lighting and shadows, without is the same as ps4
Contrast seems way overtuned in the lighting overhaul. Creator seems to think that darker = dynamic.
I know a lot of people are asking Sony for a remaster, but wouldn’t a sequel be better at this point?
Pc does what playstadont
Way better a emulated version compared to another bluepoint remake for me.
Bluepoint are good with optimisation but very questionable with art design and considering Bloodborne already had a lot of cut content already I can only imagine how much Bluepoint would miss out.
