TARDIS Interior - Console / Control Room Redesign CGI

- An animated walk-through of my 2009 CGI TARDIS interior redesign. Taking all my favourite elements from the classic series, and giving them a revamp, this is the kind of look I would personally like to see again.
Harking back to the original roots of the time machine control room from 1963 (including a console whose buttons and readouts follow the template of the original) - the time machine is brightly lit, spacious and quite typically futuristic. I grew up with the 'Five Doctors' control room (or console room as JNT would have it), and from this I borrowed the trim on the console, and the style of the central column - which I prefer not to see connected to the ceiling.
I have borrowed the deep roundels of the sixties, and the flat ones from the eighties, and created a hexagonal chamber with sloping walls. Behind concealed screens is the Doctor's little workshop, featuring numerous keepsakes and paraphernalia from previous adventures. How many old props can you spot?
It seems logical to me that the internal architecture should not rely on the external configuration, and I have never warmed to the idea that the Police Box boors could be the proper TARDIS external doors. Therefore in my version, the ship has proper inner doors to seal us from the outside dimensions.
I hope you enjoy this walk around my design and I look forward to your comments as ever!
Perfect! I wish we could have had something like this for the new series. In other words, something bigger, meatier and more solid, but still bearing the hallmarks of the original. Also, this video is well lit. Why the fashion nowadays seems to be film the TARDIS interior as dark as possible I just dont know! Well done!
Absolutely fantastic work (FOUR STARS!), I always loved the TARDIS with a futuristic interior not the hodgepodge of today though I know there is a reason for it. Best rendition on the web!
Thanks for the glimpse!
Steve Moffat was inspired by a fan made opening title sequence, I hope this Tardis interior gives him food for thought! this is much better than the organic tardis interior.
Any Timelord would be proud to have a console/control room like this. Absolutely superb.
Now I really wished the BBC had used this as the new TARDIS interior - FAR FAR better than what they are using at the moment. Well done - outstanding job.
Absolutely beautiful. You have a talent for redesign that accentuates and pays homage rather than trampling the original glory of the Hartnell console room.
Also... I love all the props from previous stories in the sliding wall cupboard. Have to love that wooden Knossos throne replica..!
I'd really like to see a longer video showing us a kind of virtual walkthrough tour of the rest of the corridors and rooms. Maybe even the oft mentioned swimming pool that we never saw in the original TARDIS!
that is what you call a control room i really love it
I love this. I hope to see more console rooms in the style of the classic episodes. If something resembling this ever graced the screen, I could die a happy fan.
This is the most natural and logical progression of what an upgrade of The Doctor's TARDIS would or should look like! When the technology to make REAL TARDIS travel machines is devised, THE ONES THAT ACTUALLY WORK WILL LOOK LIKE THIS!
OUTSTANDING!
This is a fantastic design! I seriously hope the make a design something like this for the next console room!! I love how you used the style of the classic series but added the spacious console room, the little 'workshop' and the external and internal door thing which just makes it 10,000 times better than any control room. great job!
Fantastic. I love the little room that opens up. Oh and the round things!
This is what they should have in the tv show. The current (Capaldi) console room has a wonderful retro feel to it, but this one is better.
very clever, especially the way you have the console with the traditional lay out in a touch screen format. Beautifully put together video. Definitely a high point.
Well your dream has come true! They redesigned the console room and gave it a modern sci-fi feel to it with a touch of CS Console Room.
This is the Master's Tardis. The Doctor would never have anything working this good.
What a marvelous design, I grew up with the third doctor onwards, and your design is how I would see my own tardis even down to the original sound effects. Well done
The ultimate console room! Love it.
This TARDIS is amazing!!! In my opinion, it is the best console room ever!!!
A red central column you can lay your hat on. That's what I like to see. :-)
Loving the map of the alpha quadrant circa late 24th century tucked away there ;)
Fantastic rendering; it's got a lot of similarities with the classic control room, yet it's also got features like the hideaway, holographic console, and the column that make it seem appropriately futuristic. And the door mechanism makes sense for once!!
That is absolutely brilliant!
Love the slide up wall, and that you've got both sets of doors!!
I love the design work you've done. The projected on control surfaces and read outs are a fantastic idea.
Absolutely LOVE it - I like you, found the Five Doctors console room the best, and I love the way you've added touch screen technology. Excellent work!
As much as I love both the new console rooms this would be 100x better. I love the futuristic look and the touch screen controls.
amazing, really nice idea, I love the design of the walls, takes the original design but makes it that bit more modern
beautiful! how i wish this was this was the real tardis interior! great work
I like this: A touch screen TARDIS console! Very Modern and very Star Trek ;)
Genius, genius, genius without doubt...genius
Amazing work.
Props wise; Mona Lisa, Matrix Files that Dratho liked to carry around, the Doctor's gun thing from Invasion of the Dinosaurs, the Seventh Doctor's question mark umbrella and hat/coat wrack from numerous stores.
Did you catch the fluid links?
Staggeringly beautiful!...
Lovin' your work, the sort of console room we should have had in 2005 to be honest.
that is better than the newer tardis interior by far
I really like this. I'm not so keen on the current version, but this looks cool. And I love the giant sliding doors to reveal the Doctor's study. Very imaginative!
Very good indeed!! Ive been looking at this on your website and wondering if you would ever do this into a video.
If Doctor Who stuck around for the 90's, i bet this is what we would have in the late 90's. The sliding doors were a wee treat.
That's what the Tardis should look like. Much better than that current designs. Best laugh is that one of the designs they scrapped was similar to yours!
I like the 7th Doctor's brolly sitting in with the 1st's walking stick. Nice touch.
Absolutely brilliant
@themindrobber Personally, I felt that I was looking at the default "desk-top" theme for control room of a Type 40 Time Capsule. Standard Timelord-OS: clean-sleek, ultra-tech style.
Still over of my favourite console rooms.
Excellent as always, I hope Steve Moffatt takes it into consideration. Very spacious.
Awesome! I love all the classic nods here.
absolutly amazing well done
Fantastic - my own version of the console room is similar with inverse sloping walls, traditional (ish) console, though on a platform, & a holo viewscreen which can be multiplied if necessary!
Oh and yes, exterior AND interior doors!
Good work!
awesome. completely brilliant.
I prefer your interior to the organic look of the new series!
oh that is beautiful
wow that is really inventive great work and ideas
This is really nice!!
That's lovely!
Thanks to watching Keeper of Traken when I was like 9, that clock still scares the crap out of me.
Oh, I love it!
Just awesome.
gorgeous
WOW!! That is simply amazing!! I liked the old battered and industrial look of the Tennant era TARDIS, but was never keen on the "odds and ends" control panel..then with the Smith Tardis, I liked the size and "new look", but again, the "odds and ends" controls I think are too cartoonish.. I really like your design! I have not looked yet, but do you have more to it? like passageways to to other parts of the TARDIS?
Staggeringly nice. Probably the best TARDIS consle room I've ever seen. One day, I will build this set. Do you have blueprints?
Yes the newer tardises have an organic and darker look, which actually helps to conceal the fact that is only a studio, something that the older pristine-white tardises never really were able to get away with, but I prefer this kind of design.
This would really fit Capaldi's doctor.
Very Beautiful
Amazing!
If only there was a rating higher than five stars!
Very nice - harks back to the classic series TARDIS but updates it as well. I think the actual new set retains the 2005-2009 bronze look but goes back to the old large roundels ... it'll be interesting to see :D
This looks amazing, brilliant job. Wouldn't mind a copy to put into my DW for Skyrim mod...I will literally get on my knees and beg if it helps :P
Amazing, gret effort.
I am just a might jealous as I am actual in the process of updating my own tardis inspired craft.
Fantastic
this is a real console room a++++++++++
Perfect! Love it! xxx
You should check out the 2002 TARDIS console.
Superb
That's what the TARIS should've looked like if the classic series had a 27th season.
Cool!
Can you make a full interactive version of this? I'd love to take a stroll around this layout.
VERY nice.
Oh I like this very much :)
WOW well done :)
Seeing as Peter Capaldi is likely to play a classic series style doctor, this is entirely possible.
amazing stuff, possible re-revamp for the new series??
Very Nice! I especially like the workshop alcove. Just one question; where is the exterior viewscreen? We've got to know what's outside or when something is going to crash into the TARDIS or as a means of visually communicating, right?
pretty cool
I love this design. have you taken it further?
wow..jjust wow.
awesome :)
are you doing anymore tardis intertior design cause I like to see my own interior with eighth doctors console
That's awesome!
Although, it's a bit too organized for the Doctor, don't you think?
lol the map on the wall is a mpa of knowen space in the alpha quad of our galaxy and it has the main bodys that control it (federation kilingon romulan and cardasian) im nerding out now
cor can't wait
Must ask - where did you get the in-flight Tardis hum?
The Master's TARDIS was the grandfather clock...
This is great. Iam in need of a TARDIS int' could I use this for my fan made series please ? I will of course credit you.
@southport97
Just because it "looks" high-tech and perfect doesn't mean its not battered, obsolete and broken
That was the point from the very beginning of the show, I think :)
I want jodie whittiker to have a tardis like this
I would love to see your version of the new 2012 TARDIS.
Yummy ;)
The only thing that doesn't work for me is the wall with the flat roundels. Would it be possible to have it so that it has a wall with the deep recesses lifts vertically from over the top of it, and then a flat wall behind it opens as a door to the workshop?
The control room looks similar to the one in the comics in the 1990's
Why did they have to turn the TARDIS into a dungeon from the 1996 movie onward?
EXACTLY! It's as if "The (7th) Doctor" once again attempted to repair the chameleon circuit and, yet again it misfires and, upon the T.A.R.D.I.S. returning to the junkyard it, instead, changes the T.A.R.D.I.S. *_interior_* to match the outer surroundings!
If you look at the 7th Doctor's TARDIS interior from the canon comics, you can tell that it looks like a mix between the 7th Doctor's TV TARDIS and the 7/8th Doctor's movie TARDIS. I think that the comic TARDIS is the original interior, and the 8th Doctor's TARDIS is when he decorated it, since he's been living in it for quite some time, as if in retirement as he approaches his natural end to his 7th incarnation (before he was shot down by thugs, that is).
You e redecorated, I don't like it.
I love it
I find it funny how the tardis's interior sorta goes in reverse...
what I mean is that in the old series it was bright and futuristic but in the new it's dark and old-school...
when I first got a good look of the 11th doctor's tardis interior I felt it was much more steam-punky than the 9th and 10th one's...
Amazing!!
Really good design?
I meant really good design!
soup herb! nicely thymed...
@celestialtoystore It would be fairly simple to render top and side projections of each component as a reference, if you're serious about it!
