Using a Norseman to dig up dinosaurs!

  • Most knife owners wouldn't pound their Grimsmo knife into soft rock on a regular basis, but how does the Norseman hold up to a paleontologist doing just that?
John's brother in law, Dr. David C. Evans, comes to the shop to show us his beaten and battered knife. The knife is still beautiful, but could definitely use a CNC spa treatment.

Funny to see one of those knives used and abused. I think that is better than them living in a case.

He had it for free so no problem with using it. If I'll get Norseman for free I can use and abuse it too.

No better testament or honor to a knife than to be used. I made 10 knives in my entire life, simple, nowhere near as complex as the Norseman, and i'm happy as a peach each time the recipients come back to me to have them resharpened or fixed.

    • @aserta

I can only imagine how useful the Norseman is for digging stuff based on my art school years using a tipless German bayonet knife to form and work sculptures in lime.

I'm sitting here this evening watching Dino Hunt on Netflix, 100% because of this video.
    A. Your brother in law is a bad ass
    B. Dino Hunt is sort of like an adult version of "where's Waldo" for the Norseman. I'm sitting here just as excited to spot the Norseman on Netflix as I am to see the dinosaurs!

More grimsmo videos and a frickin dinosaur digging norseman. This is a great idea to film this as a testimonial to what a grimsmo knife can do in use and shows how well the quality you put into every knife has paid off.

H1 Metal bearing cage, it’ll never rust or take damage, unlike the plastic or polymer that Most makers are currently using. This race would look something like what shiro uses. But not a Multi row system, still single. This would probably be a pointless upgrade for most people. But in theory it’ll add durability, to a “weak point” in the knife.
Of course this would mean you no longer have captured ball bearings. I don’t know how having none captured bearings will affects the track the bearings dig. I wonder if their is a better material that’s more durable then polymer, but that’s rust proof as well, and will still allow for captured bearings 🤔. Or maybe the free bearings in h1 wouldn’t be issue, and worth upgrading🤔
I also just bought the last Norseman you guys had up, mostly stonewashed, no anodizing. I’ll definitely be doing a review.

    • @neroknives1828
      @neroknives1828 5 лет назад

Use the same tool that you use now for the polymer cage. This would allow for the bearing to fit into a thicker steel cage. And be captured on one side. Call only go in one way. So when you take apart the knife, if you pick the washer up, and don’t turn the cage over, the balls stay in.
I know I’m talking to myself, but this is the shit I think about.

I've done that job, excavating dinosaur fossils in Alberta, and most of us used a simple awl.
But that was 35 years ago, and things change. Incidentally, it's a $200,000 fine for a member of the public to collect fossils.

Did you give him a loaner knife while you're working on his. (I know it's not something you usually do, but it would have been nice.)
"Princeton Field Guide to Dinosaurs" We stopped in Princeton last night on our drive back to Florida from New Hampshire. (We're stuck in Princeton now because of a snow storm.) People in New Jersey are worse than Floridians when a hurricane is coming through. It's snowing, and they've completely freaked out. Everything is shut down. It's almost like it's if it snowed in Florida, and Floridians started freaking out. (It did snow in Florida yesterday or the day before. LOL.) It's literally regular snow... No high winds, no ice, sleet, freezing rain, etc.... Just some light snow. It's crazy, they're acting like it's the apocalypse.
