Thanks very much for checking out the video, Jan. I enjoyed shooting the 150-500 on the ZFc. It’s such a capable little camera when it’s really not sold as any sort of action cam. Have fun with your lens selection!
If and when Nikon releases a pro or semi-pro DX camera body, especially with a battery grip, this Tamron lens would fit like a hand in a glove with this DX camera body.
Hey, the extra ‘reach’ with the DX crop works well with the Tamron. A full D500 mirrorless successor would make a lot of people happy, though I’d largely be content with an upgraded Z50 body with an Exspeed 7 processor. IBIS would be nice but not a deal breaker for me. Thanks for checking out the video and fingers crossed for some new DX bodies!
@@jonneave The future "Z90" may have a 33 megapixel sensor which would have a greater pixel density than the DX cropped 18 megapixel Z8 and Z9 images. It will be interesting to see what Nikon will release in the future.
Great video @jonneave. How would you compare the overall experience of shooting action with a Nikon DX and a 150-500mm, vs say an olympus em1iii and a 100-400??? Both in terms of AF and in terms of image quality? I'm a fellow Nikon and M43 user, but trying to decide which way to go for wildlife/action. I can't afford a Z8/9.
Hey Christopher. That’s a great question that I think I have an answer to but am still collecting my thoughts as to why. I’ve owned Olympus bodies since 2011 and had pretty much all of their bodies (and a few Panasonics) up until the E-M1 iii. And I have the Panny Leica 100-400 which my experience and reviews online say is a little finicky to get the best out of with the Oly bodies. Long story short, the ZFC is very reliable with the 150-500 from an AF perspective. My hit rate with the µ4/3 combination is much lower though I need to give it another go before I conclude on it. The Oly is much more full featured than the Z crop bodies, including frame rate, joy stick, pro capture, neutral density, live composite etc etc… but I dont really miss them and I find the eye autofocus of the Nikon bodies to work well with my photography. In general, I find the AF-C of the Oly to be ok if the background isn’t too cluttered. If the background is messy, the Oly is much quicker to lose focus than the Nikon bodies. I hope that helps, though I’m sure different people will have different views. Thanks for checking out the video.
Thank you very much for that. Is that with the latest oly firmware? The reason I ask is that I recently watched your video on the em1 mark I, in which you say C-AF is considerably better since the latest firmware. I'M quite indecisive, I think nikon would it to bed if they brought out a z50ii 😊
No worries. My e-m1 iii is running the latest firmware though that body didn’t get any major AF updates over its firmware update lifecycle as far as I am aware. The mark 1 was substantially improved over its lifecycle. It went from being unusable for moving subjects to decent. The E-M1 iii is certainly better than the mark i at continuous autofocus. And its pretty good as long as the subject is clear and the background isn’t excessively busy. Though I’m not sure it’s really much better than a mark ii body with its latest firmware. I find all the Nikon bodies to be more consistent than the E-M1 series. That’s not to say the Oly bodies are not useable, they just require more care when selecting the right focusing target and covering the subject with it. With even the earliest Z bodies you can concentrate a little more on image composition than nailing the subject with the autofocus box. I hope that makes sense.
Hey Hearty. Thanks for checking out the video and taking the time to comment. I think lens choice is a question of preferences. The Nikon is likely a hair sharper and is 600mm with better VR. The Tamron is cheaper and a good bit smaller to carry. If you’re big into video work handheld, the Nikon is a winner. I went for the Tamron largely because it was a lot smaller and being cheaper didn’t hurt none! All great choices!
Hey Rinaldo, thanks for checking out the video. I’ve not used that lens though I am aware that some older Tamron lenses were not compatible with the Z mount. I recall Tamron updating the firmware on their newer F mounts lenses so they could be used with the FTZ adapter on a Z mount camera. I don’t know if the 150-600 G1 received that update. Thanks for the comment.
Hey Grunge - thanks for checking out the video. I think you’re getting better VR and maybe slightly sharper results with the Nikon versus a significantly more portable and cheaper option with the Tamron. I dont use a super telephoto enough to justify the additional expense and I like the size of the Tamron much better than the Nikon. You may have different priorities but I think they’re two great options. Good luck!
Hey Benny, interesting question. I still think it’s a good lens for a DX camera as there aren’t any dedicated DX lenses with a comparable focal length, certainly not native Z lenses. With the lack of IBIS in Nikon’s DX bodies, maybe the 180-600 would provide better stabilization though you have to deal with the much larger size of the lens. What’re your thoughts?
The problem with the 180-600 it’s massive on a Z50 and probably a bit overkill, I hired a Z100-400 and used on my Z50 & absolutely loved it, it’s just the purchase cost that’s a killer for me even second hand they’re only a couple of hundred pounds cheaper than new when on offer
For the price of the 100-400 S you could get the 150-500 plus a good copy of the Z6 gen 1, though with the release of the 180-600 I think the 100-400 S prices are starting to soften.
Hi, if you’re after a lens that has an effective field of view up to 750mm it’s a great option. It produces nice images on a crop sensor and the hand grip on the Z50 makes for decent handling of the large lens. Best.
Thank you for this video. I already own the Z fc, and this lens is on my wishlist...

Hi there. Thanks for checking out the video and taking the time to leave a comment. Do you own the Zfc and 150-500?

it would seem to me that the nikkor 180-600 would be the better option for a crop body like the zfc because of the great VR that it has.

The only problem with the 180-600 is 1. It’s massive 2. It’s a lot heavier. 3. It’s more expensive. 4. The short end is just that much longer
I couldn't make the Tamron 150-600 G1 autofocus work with my Z30 using the FTZ II.

I use my Z 100-400 + TC 1.4 on ZFC or Z8
How do you find the handling on the Zfc Avner?
I have the smallrig grip on my ZFC helping to handle the 100-400 the focusing and sharping is great!!@@jonneave
Yeah I think the small rig grip is pretty much essential. It works well with the ZFc and the Tamron 150-500. Best.
But would you have if you have a Z50 and can’t afford a Full frame body
