Violent Vibration From Worn Out Spindle Bushings

- Hey my lovelies
It’s KOH prep time for all vehicles and this one surprised me. Just loosing 1mm on the spindle bushing ,which seems so small, caused such a big vibration when driving MM in 4WD.
Now that we have addressed that he should almost be good to go.
It’s all about maintenance and I love to keep up with it on MM and Nessie.
Here are the video for Stage 8 and their website:

Thank you always for watching and we will see you Saturday 🤟🏻
Holls
Glad to see you moving around. Hope your back keeps improving.
I love that even after living in the US for a few years you are still measuring the thickness of the bushing in mm's! Metric for the win.
Looks more like 5mm, top line on calipers is in inches, but who cares 😂
Failure to assimilate is the reason that the U.S. is so messed up. Everybody comes here wanting to live the same way they did in the places they came from. Suggest she start using units that are used in the U.S.
@@mikek5298- If you were as smart as you think that you were, then you would be aware that virtually everything in the US is already metric. The packaging either simply uses both measurements or has an Imperial equivalent for bone headed consumers.
Failure to assimilate does not have anything to do with why the U.S. has problems. In fact, seeing how freedom is a foundational tenet of this country, it’s probably much more likely that those who come here do so in the hope of being able to measure things however they liked - especially in their own garage. Also, it’s a bit of a stretch to associate economic and social problems with a globally recognized system of weights and measures 🤣.
@@mikek5298 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Wow. Can’t wait to see all of the KOTH coverage. Keep it up Holly🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Great work on MischiefMaker. He’s getting better and stronger each day you give him some love. I’m rooting for you Hollie during KOH. I know that you’ll be great behind the wheel of Nessie. I want to see you leave them all in your dust 👏👏👏
Hi Holly it’s good to see you getting stuck into those axles you certainly are talented in doing your own mechanics’s, I couldn’t stop laughing 😂 at you doing the job with the video speeded up
Ready to Rock and Roll again. You are a 100% better mechanic than I am. My skills are changing tires and oil changes! lol!
Holly; a suggestion; go to your local metal supplier & see if they have any brass bar stock and find out if you could get a "drop" from it; only need a 6" piece, use one of the replacement buchings & locate a machine shop and ask them if they could "turn down the brass" far enough where it's a micron of an inch smaller than your repalcement bushing; it would be much better than a socket.
Enjoy your cuppa with shortbread! I love shortbread too!!! Have a great day Hollz!!
I have the same maple butcher block tops on my workbenches and rolling cabinets. They were too pretty to destroy so I made removable covers that fit over them out of 1/2” mdf and sealed the tops with hammered finish gray/silver paint. They look great and are holding up fine.
Nice to see ol mischief maker getting some love😊 just watching your body language but my unprofessional opinion is your back is good to go👍👍👍👍
Great job. Thank you 😊
Getting it done Holly way to go. Hope the work you did fixed the issue. It was obvious that the work you did was needed so at least it wasn't wasted even if it did not correct the loud noise. But hope it did. so MischiefMaker is good to go now.
I use the bearings on the spindle. I just completely rebuilt the front hubs on TIGGUR!
Tip on the hub seal.Put grease around seal where the spring is to prevent it from coming out when installing it.I like you are not afraid to get your hands greasy.
Wow. Your shop looks like a hospital. You could give shop organizing lessons to Matt, Roy, and especially robby
HEY! Holly! Good morning lovely lady and thumbs UP!!
We we madam measure.
Good job my Holly.
No more squeaky.
👍🏽🤙🏾✋🏽👩🏼🔧🤜🏽💥🤛🏽👏🏽.

THANKS FOR THE VIDEO
Holly when you are using your verniers try to use just the ends of the calibers especially when measuring small rounded material…it will give you a larger measurement then actually have.
Hey Holly thanks for this video. I have a new idea about where those strange vibrations might be coming from.
Definitely check it out. Those bearings fall apart quick with even slight water/dirt intrusion.
Morning Holly!!
6:58 tunes are kickin.
Factory parts in the spindles, I've been working on 4x4's forty years.
I will have to think about it some, if I could have used 2 seals instead of one early in the video I would. The outside seal helps the next seal in line
Holly nice job on the maintenance of the hubs I am sure it will sound much better. You need some Gorilla nail polish so it will stay on. It's nice that you keep the floors so clean.
Harbor Freight does sell a seal driver kit
Hiya Hollz!! Mornin'!! 😊
I work in a shop in Tennessee and that bushing problem is very common with the 07 and newer super duties.
I wasn’t even aware the unit bearing axles had spindle bearings (or bushings). The buggy I’m building will be the first unit bearing rig (all 4 corners) I own, so that will be a whole new learning experience! 😃🙌🏻
Just don't give up on him. I heard you say he's getting old on another channel. Don't give up on him sweety.
That truck IS you.
Was the shaft marked up very badly where it rides on the bushing? Sometimes it can be a chore to polish off any residual from the old bushing and smooth off and roughness that will shorten the life of the new ones. 1 millimeter reduction in the thickness of the sidewall means a 2 millimeter increase in diameter so that's a pretty big potential for damaging vibration.
When driving a socket with a hammer you really don't want to hit the socket with the hard face since that can chip plus it can distort the socket so it won't fit correctly on the square drive of the wrench or extensions.
No thin fiber gasket on the hubs? The ones I used on construction and snow removal equipment all had a hard gasket to seal the locking hubs up.
Do mostly high speed high mileage so no poly bushings here but roller/needle bearings and high pressure grease for roadway vehicles.
I had one motor bike come in for a defective muffler that had cracked and a rear fender that kept coming loose and falling off which they were rabid about being due to cheap mufflers and fenders however it was vibration from a worn drive sheave that was telegraphing though the frame and destroying seemingly unrelated components. Fixed the root cause of the vibration and all the collateral damage stopped.
Glad you tracked it down and hopefully stopped any further collateral damage from taking place.
Best!
Holly, love the videos. Hey just want to let you know the Stage 8 hub nuts don't work with the Yukon hardcore hubs. It says on the Yukon website. I also ran that combo and chewed up spacers and had weirtld noises. Swapped it out for the traditional style and all fixed. Just wanted to save you some hassle.
Yikes!! They’ve been on my rig for almost 18 months working perfectly. 😬
I’ll give them a call and see what they say, but they’ve been fine for me.
Awesome video as always. Is the lower control arm jam nut on the passenger side, axle end tight?
It is, the gap you are seeing is due to the Belleville washers that sit between the jam nuts and the aluminum arms. Those gaps are not there on Nessie because all of her joints are right hand thread so the overall distance can’t change unless the joint is removed from its bracket.
2:50 That was cute! 😂
That welded u-joint....
Is there a video…. That explains how you put the JK lights on the JL grill?
Or is that just an entire new grill for jks that looks more like a jl? It’s the only one I’ve seen.

That's the DRIEST I have ever seen anyone run a front axle?? also never have seen those nylon bushings in place of the Torington bearing??
Any particular reason you don't run the slinger/shield on the stub shaft, the dust seal fits tighter against the back of the spindle with it in place.
Also if you pack the back/inside of the wheel seal the garter spring won't pop out when you drive it in the wheel hub.
Gday guys
Is that a plastic bushing. If so you might look into getting metal bushing that could solve your problems. Just an idea because I don't know for sure if that is the fix.
Water and dirt intrusion is a real issue for the metal spindle bearing (and the stupid needle bearings inside of them) when it comes to offroad vehicles. I’d love to know if there is a brass bushing option, but I don’t think that makes sense for this application. These poly bushings are 3 years old and my first set of metal spindle bearings lasted only a few months and scarred the heck out of the nice machined surface of my stub shaft.
One cool thing to remember is that nothing is spinning up front except the hub on the spindle unless he is on the trail. I am always disconnected at the hub and the transfer case unless I’m wheeling, so the shafts, carrier, gears, etc…don’t ever see sustained high speed use.
Cool,
Way to go!! Keep doing what you are doing!! What is the name and brand of that black greaseless bushing that you installed, want to pick up a couple to keep in the bag, just in case mine are new that are currently installed. Thanks!
Where is the test drive? We need results😊
So ... I have a "death wobble" at speeds between 40 and 55 (less it doesn't happen and faster it levels off..... Do you think I may have this same issue?
Maybe. The cause of "death wobble" is not a one thing diagnosis.
My YJ had it due to a bent spring and a bad wheel spindle bearing and bad tie rod.
My son's ZJ had it due to bad ball joints and the drag link came loose at the frame.
Death Wobble is caused by excessive movement of the wheel(s). Once you get it you need to track down the cause because the wheels flopping around are causing massive issues on the rest of the suspension parts.
Find a good mechanic you trust to go through the entire suspension. Every part needs to be checked and every one that has excessive movement replaced.
The kids ZJ ended up with the entire suspension rebuild because the previous owner just kept driving until it would not go straight even at low speed.
@@keithmalmberg8395 yeah Everytime I ask I hear a different diagnosis ... But seeing this made me think..... Is it this simple? Lol... I mean I do want to put a lift kit in so I didn't want to go replacing the stock parts just to change them out with the kit lololol
@@stormtrooperjeepjk Because of the complexity of the cause the answer is, Yes No, Maybe.....
I had the same problem also with my wife's XJ. We did a lift and up graded the steering components rather than replace the stock parts. I had 3 sets of tires for the lifted YJ and none for the stock jeeps. It was the same price to lift as buying new tires after fixing the problem.
Lots of ways to make it good.
Find a good club in your area. Get with them and they can help you get it going.
If you're in the Seattle area go check out Timber Tamers.
#221 when I ran with them.
👍👍🚙
Can’t remember the last time my mechanic wore red finger nails.
Me either! 🤣🤣
What is the part number for the bushings?
Here is where I get them:

What's happening to the Scottish hammer
I was hoping to start on it this month, but it might have to wait until after KOH ends on 2/3
👍

Is Walter going to be your co-driver.
Fun fact, Walter’s last ever time inside Nessie was before her cage was wrapped up. At almost 7ft tall, he will never actually be able to ride in Nessie the way she is currently set up. 😅
@MischiefMakerTV ok thanks on that do you have plans for a co- driver with you just in case you need a break on the trail.
Use the bearings over the bushings
How often do you check the bearings and/or replace them? Also, do you have an atlas and disconnect at both the hub and transfer case. I’m only happy to run the bushing because nothing up front is spinning except for the hub spinning in the spindle unless my rig is on the trail.
@MischiefMakerTV we disconnect everything on the front-end unless on the trail. I would rather see a bushing like in you u joints vesus a plastic based bushing but the u joints get lubricated every couple of trips if not every trip.
Metal only for me.
You need tobrun the racecar not a completely differently built vehicle. That's like test driving a civic at Daytona and then getting in a Nascar.
That’s what I said. I’ll be getting seattime in the car but I’m not going to run it for 2 weeks before the race everyday is what I meant
@MischiefMakerTV that's good. Just getting to know way around there is key.
