Can we talk about the fact that Eve was in such a state of desperation to save Wall-E, that she didn't take him outside for him to charge, and instead she blasted a hole in the roof. She wasn't willing to waste a single *second* . Something about that intense desperation makes that brief moment when Wall-E isn't himself anymore even sadder for me.

  • @robertscott1949
    @robertscott1949 3 года назад +326

On a technical animation level, consider how all the emotions expressed by Eve were expressed through the shape of her digital eyes. And all the emotions expressed by Wall-E were expressed through the tilt of his camera-eyes. No mouth smile. No eyebrows. Very little voice intonation (although Eve did use some.) All the normal methods used when animating humans were unavailable, except for those two things. Pixar animators understand the role of eyes in emotion better than anyone.

Wall-E has a special spot in my heart and mind. The friendship/comradeship between Wall-E and Eve is just so wholesome and heartfelt as mentioned. This movie also highlights issues in regards to our own environment and how us humans are often negligent of it. Ignorance is bliss, as they say, but then again it can eventually lead to the worst outcomes. This is an eye-opener for all kids and us adults as to why we should care more for our surroundings and not just leave excessive deposits around everywhere.

When Wall-E first kissed EVE, he gave her the Spark of Life. If you notice, she stops caring about the Plant after that, and is more interested in Wall-E. This is why when Wall-E died, he was essentially factory reset. He only came back once EVE kissed him, giving him the Spark of Life back. It's the difference between a machine and a sentient being.
Wall-E also spread that spark to the other robots in different ways, such as teaching M-O to ignore the lines and forge his own path. If you notice, the robots all sing the song that Wall-E plays, because he taught them to learn and feel for themselves. Also, the so-called "broken" robots never use the lines after Wall-E shows up, while the steward robots exclusively use the lines.

    • @johnwalker1058

Oh wow, I've watched this movie several times, and I never noticed that whole "spark of life thing!" Nice catch!
I did notice the whole "WALL-E inspiring other robots to go their own way/path" theme, such as the moment where the cleaning robot (MO) decided to go off his pre-set path to follow WALL-E so he could clean up his dirt tracks that he left behind. I always thought that was a nice touch.

It's interesting how they used live action to depict humans before they left earth. I think that's done for a few reasons. For one thing, prior to seeing the cartoony fat humans on the Axiom, everything in the film has an element of realism to it, except the cockroach. It could believably be live action if you squint. Also, they wanted to use the clip of Hello Dolly for Wall-e to watch, showing his desire to experience love. Thirdly, and I think this one's the most important, they wanted to show humanity in a way that we would recognize it, so that it would be more jarring when we get to the Axiom and see how they have fallen.

WALL-E must be one of the most gentle & innocent & kindest characters ever put to film, regardless of genre. He's not a child, he is not an adult. And yet he is both, at heart. A total expert at what he knows & can do but completely oblivious to everything else. His true greatness is his curiosity. That's why he was the last remaining robot of his kind, he developed an actual AI. Damn lucky that it was an AI with such a good soul. What I also love so much about this film that, with the exception of AUTO & his little helper, every single being, robot as human, that encounters WALL-E changes during the course of the story. They all wake up, they all become more than their original directive & they take their eyes off their screens. The curiosity of WALL-E spreads as a positive force to everybody. One of my favorite examples is the secretary bot below the captain's cabin that realizes that it can wave its one & only limb just because WALL-E waves hello to it as he passes. This story is so much about freedom. Humans & robots don't realize they are all slaves. All they needed to do to free themselves was to look up, to jump off the light trails on the floors.
WALL-E is also a magnificent sci-fi movie! And its creators paid so much homage to all time sci-fi classics. Most certainly to 2001 but also to Alien. The computer voice on the Axiom is, after all, Sigourney Weaver herself! This is my absolute fav animated film ever! It makes me laugh, it makes me think, it makes me cry. And it's also so simple. A movie everyone should watch.

Wall-E is voiced by Ben Burtt, the lead sound designer on the original 6 Star Wars. Any iconic sound effect you think of from those movies, that was Ben.
I also find it funny in this movie that the one film that seems to survive is Hello Dolly, one of the most expensive flops in film history that not only killed the "Roadshow" presentation format but severely crippled Movie Musucals as a bankable genre.

My favorite movie ever I think when it comes to animated movies. Wall-E has everything for everyone. It was my romance movie before I met my wife. ^_^ Among its many themes, the obvious one is humans conception of products and things. Polluting the earth and what not. It's why the movie did well and with adult. There was deeper story in alot of it for adults like me.

This movie came out the same year as THE DARK KNIGHT. Most thinking people wanted both to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. Because of genre bias neither of them were. The Academy embarrassed themselves so severely that they eventually changed their own rules to have 10 Best Picture nominees. Because the old fogies in the Academy insisted they couldn't pick ten movies a year they came up with a convoluted way of having voting that gave them a random number of nominees for BP depending on how many votes the movies got. It resulted in even crappier Best Picture winners. I do believe that this year they are going back to a solid ten nominees. This was a masterpiece. It's a shame we didn't take the lesson. Ten years on and we spent a whole year surviving instead of living.
There is a live action movie from the 70s that was a lot like this called SILENT RUNNING.

The pandemic you saw the oxygen levels rise and the air feeling more easier to breath, nature and animals coming out. But now that it's coming to a so called end, cars and many factories will start again and continue to destroy the earth

Auto may have been the "villain" of the movie but he wasn't evil. Auto was just following his directive, which came from the last president of Buy'N'Large. The President had more authority than the captain, so that's who's order he was going to follow. As far as he was concerned, his last order was to stay away from Earth so that's what he was doing.

I agree and respectfully disagree. Beauty and sorrow are not mutually exclusive in my mind. While I agree with you on how sad the state of the Earth in this movie is and that the cause of it was awful and ugly, there is a certain beauty to the landscape still. The towers of trash are depressing, but also breathtaking as you realize how much time it took to build them, like memorials to what used to exist. They are like a ghost of cities left abandoned long ago and reminiscent of the life and joy now gone (much like Once Upon a December from Anastasia). Then when Eve is introduced as she soars above the ruined land, the scenery is dull but not dark, sunlight shines and the shot is beautiful because of Eve's graceful arcs and the freedom she displayed, but it still is touched by the sorrow of the Earth's plight. What happened to the Earth in this movie is steeped in sadness and grave warnings, but there is still beauty there, like a sad song sung by an angelic voice.

The creators of WALL-E wanted to know how much they could remove from a face but still show as much emotion as possible for WALL-E. In the end, a neck, eyes, and eyebrow analogues give a full range of emotions. It's amazing how well it works, and how much they let us learn about WALL-E through only actions. Because WALL-E and EVE don't say much, it's all about what they do that tell us about them. In fact, most of the movie's story is told with as little dialogue as possible, telling it with what you see in the background. And it does it better than a lot of movies with a huge script can.
And there are so many moments toward the end that just bring me to tears, no matter how many times I watch. Without a doubt, this is one of the absolute best movies Pixar has ever done.

The movie that is shown on the iPod and the songs "Put on Your Sunday Clothes" and "It Takes A Moment" is from, is "Hello, Dolly". The reason that it is in this movie is because director Andrew Stanton liked the movie and the musical it is based on ever since he played Barnaby Tucker (one of the main characters) in a high school play of Hello, Dolly. Originally, the movie was suppoused to start with French Swing music but since The Triplets of Belleville opened up in the same style and Stanton didn't want to think WALL-E was ripping off from that movie, so he changed to "Put on You Sunday Clothes" as it starts with "Out there..." which is the perfect way to set with outer space. "It takes a moment" was used to show to WALL-E (and the audience) that holding hands symbolizes love, as WALL-E and EVE can't express through words.
Thanks to the desicion, Stanton thought that all the humans in the past had to be real people hence why they're live action instead of animated (plus the transition from normal humans to "gels" didn't gel as much, excuse the pun, if the original humans were still animated models which was slightly caricatured). In earlier drafts the humans actually devolved into gelantinous blobs for spending centuries out in space but test audiences thought them too weird and couldn't relate to them, so they were changed to obese humans for spending all their lives sitting in their hover chairs and keep drinking food stuffs most of the day.
Trivia: The movie Hello, Dolly! didn't have a close up of Cornelius and Dolly holding hands so Pixar edited in a zoomed in version of them holding hands, with permission from 20:th Century Fox (this was years before Disney buying Fox). The composer for Hello, Dolly! Jerry Herman didn't knew what the songs were going to be used for when giving Pixar permission to do so but when he saw it he thought how it was used was genius. Coincidentally Lionel Newman, the uncle of WALL-E's composer Thomas Newman's uncle (and Randy Newman's as well).

Jerry Herman is the composer of the Tony-winning musical "Hello, Dolly!" and had licensed songs from the 1964 show to Pixar -- The Walt Disney Co.'s computer animation arm -- but he had no idea that his music and lyrics would factor so prominently in the story line of the sci-fi robot romance.
