On a technical animation level, consider how all the emotions expressed by Eve were expressed through the shape of her digital eyes. And all the emotions expressed by Wall-E were expressed through the tilt of his camera-eyes. No mouth smile. No eyebrows. Very little voice intonation (although Eve did use some.) All the normal methods used when animating humans were unavailable, except for those two things. Pixar animators understand the role of eyes in emotion better than anyone.
As someone who has been drawing all her life, eyes are the most crucial part of the expression. I spend a lot of time on them because they have the most impact and they have to be right to work. Major props to the animators here, their work is magnificent 👏👌
When Wall-E first kissed EVE, he gave her the Spark of Life. If you notice, she stops caring about the Plant after that, and is more interested in Wall-E. This is why when Wall-E died, he was essentially factory reset. He only came back once EVE kissed him, giving him the Spark of Life back. It's the difference between a machine and a sentient being. Wall-E also spread that spark to the other robots in different ways, such as teaching M-O to ignore the lines and forge his own path. If you notice, the robots all sing the song that Wall-E plays, because he taught them to learn and feel for themselves. Also, the so-called "broken" robots never use the lines after Wall-E shows up, while the steward robots exclusively use the lines.
Oh wow, I've watched this movie several times, and I never noticed that whole "spark of life thing!" Nice catch! I did notice the whole "WALL-E inspiring other robots to go their own way/path" theme, such as the moment where the cleaning robot (MO) decided to go off his pre-set path to follow WALL-E so he could clean up his dirt tracks that he left behind. I always thought that was a nice touch.

Wall-E is one of the best animated films in history. I would argue the Toy Story saga is Pixar's best work, but in terms of award-winner films, Wall-E is their best.
That shriek that EVE does when Wall-E gets crushed holding up that machine to keep it from closing crushes my soul every time ;A; Loved this reaction through and through, Nick!
I think that this is definitely one of those movies that you actually "experience" and feel, and it can be surprising the amount of emotion it can make you feel with the characters, colors, and music. This has definitely been one of those movies that floored me (and I love animated films lol) and it's so great to watch people experience it and love it for the first time 👍👍👍😁😁😁. I'll still put it on to help me sleep sometimes since there is so little speaking in the beginning. Thanks for another great reaction!
Second comment: The first time we watched this was in high school, during lunch, when our classmate brought a copy. I still remember how we crowded around their laptop and awed over Wall-E and Eve, as well as the human couple. Wall-E is one of the OG cinnamon rolls before cinnamon rolls were a thing. 😁
One of my favorite examples of how great Pixar is at character animation is when WALL-E's memory is wiped. Despite him being a bunch of solid metal bits that can't make traditional expressions, it's immediately clear that all the personality we saw from him throughout the movie is gone, which makes it all the more impactful when it comes back.
Fun fact! If you didn't know, there was multiple axioms! You hear the president say, "autopilots" as in plural (32:27), refering to the other axioms autopilots, and in the little tv holograms, there's multiple axioms!
I saw this movie when it came out and it was so much more impactful than I expected. It's yet another testament to how you don't actually need dialogue to make a film. The old film WALLE watches is called Hello Dolly, and was an old musical about a matchmaker.
WALL-E must be one of the most gentle & innocent & kindest characters ever put to film, regardless of genre. He's not a child, he is not an adult. And yet he is both, at heart. A total expert at what he knows & can do but completely oblivious to everything else. His true greatness is his curiosity. That's why he was the last remaining robot of his kind, he developed an actual AI. Damn lucky that it was an AI with such a good soul. What I also love so much about this film that, with the exception of AUTO & his little helper, every single being, robot as human, that encounters WALL-E changes during the course of the story. They all wake up, they all become more than their original directive & they take their eyes off their screens. The curiosity of WALL-E spreads as a positive force to everybody. One of my favorite examples is the secretary bot below the captain's cabin that realizes that it can wave its one & only limb just because WALL-E waves hello to it as he passes. This story is so much about freedom. Humans & robots don't realize they are all slaves. All they needed to do to free themselves was to look up, to jump off the light trails on the floors. WALL-E is also a magnificent sci-fi movie! And its creators paid so much homage to all time sci-fi classics. Most certainly to 2001 but also to Alien. The computer voice on the Axiom is, after all, Sigourney Weaver herself! This is my absolute fav animated film ever! It makes me laugh, it makes me think, it makes me cry. And it's also so simple. A movie everyone should watch.
especially where WALL-E almost died, then EVE's rush to repair him, and his brief lost of memory and personality before EVE gave him a kiss that re-sparked his consciousness
I don’t shed tears anymore, but WALL•E, EVE, the captain, and the others are so endearing that I still *feel* the emotional beats hit. EVE being enchanted with lighters, her determination to serve her purpose, her breaking the mold and redefining her directive. MO’s giddy rebellion and tenacity for cleanliness. The captain’s enthusiasm with Earth and how EVE coming back positive gave him hope and a will to live. *Literally every sound and action* that WALL•E does on screen! (My chest can’t NOT drop when the machine crashes down on him owww-) The humanity of these machines is so damn immersive~
The original ending was a lot darker: the characters that Wall E meets were aliens, but in a spoof of Planet Of The Apes, the aliens, whom look giant bowls of Jelly, are actually humans, having mutated by 700 years due to radiation exposure in space. The aliens find the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor, resembling what they once were.
That’s not the original ending, it’s the ending they considered during the writing stages. And they were just gong to be aliens. It was abandoned as an idea early on, not only because it’s really stupid, but there’s nowhere for the story to go. Unless you’re interested in Pixar’s writing process, it holds no other value as a fun fact.
@@chrissmith6097 As someone interested in Pixar's writing process, I can confirm: that doesn't seem helpful outside that specific field of knowledge lol
I can’t believe I didn’t enjoy this movie when I was younger! It’s not my favorite Pixar movie now, but I love it way more compared to when I was a kid! 🥰

@@Little1Cave Same for me on both, as well as all the 2000s Pixar movies sans Monsters Inc - they just felt boring to hyperactive child me, but watching them back now, I appreciate them a lot more. 7:17 Run! The humans are coming! Kkkk I'm sorry, Wall-E just always fills me with a quiet sense of horror at the scenery of all the mountains of trash, and the way you said "humans are coming" was perfect.
I just love your reactions. Not only you point out things I never realized when I watched these kinds of films, but also the love and admiration you have for every aspect of each movie
Wall-E is voiced by Ben Burtt, the lead sound designer on the original 6 Star Wars. Any iconic sound effect you think of from those movies, that was Ben. I also find it funny in this movie that the one film that seems to survive is Hello Dolly, one of the most expensive flops in film history that not only killed the "Roadshow" presentation format but severely crippled Movie Musucals as a bankable genre.
My favorite movie ever I think when it comes to animated movies. Wall-E has everything for everyone. It was my romance movie before I met my wife. ^_^ Among its many themes, the obvious one is humans conception of products and things. Polluting the earth and what not. It's why the movie did well and with adult. There was deeper story in alot of it for adults like me.
I remember seeing this in theatres as a kid and sobbing. Like I was not prepared for the emotional roller coaster that you go on with these robots that really don’t even talk. They were able to convey just so much emotion!! I love Wall-E and Eve and the cockroach… they just did such a great job at showing characters emotions and stories without words and that always stuck with me
The scene where Wall-e and Eve fly around the ship made me instantly fall in love with the movie when I first saw it. The music and the way they fly around like they're flying round the ship like they're dancing in space is so beautiful.
Neat fact the small robot Cozmo is the closest we have to that small janitor robot and it is cute and The scenes of the Earth recovering that appear during the credits were added after test audiences said that they didn't think the people on the spaceship would survive. Credit to TV Tropes. PS Happy you loved the film I thought it would be a silly film but then I watch it and was really surprised at hoe good it was.
This movie came out the same year as THE DARK KNIGHT. Most thinking people wanted both to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. Because of genre bias neither of them were. The Academy embarrassed themselves so severely that they eventually changed their own rules to have 10 Best Picture nominees. Because the old fogies in the Academy insisted they couldn't pick ten movies a year they came up with a convoluted way of having voting that gave them a random number of nominees for BP depending on how many votes the movies got. It resulted in even crappier Best Picture winners. I do believe that this year they are going back to a solid ten nominees. This was a masterpiece. It's a shame we didn't take the lesson. Ten years on and we spent a whole year surviving instead of living. There is a live action movie from the 70s that was a lot like this called SILENT RUNNING.
Oh my gosh, I just realized that wall-e decorated his home for her with lights, because he knew she came from space and they would look like the stars!!!! My heart ♥️
Best part of watching your videos is how expressive you are. You show your happiness and sadness same as so many of us. And it just makes watching these so much more of a treat. It’s like when you show someone something you care about and want them to live it as much as you do. And that’s what these videos are like. You love them as much as we do. Thank you for that.
Tbh when it comes to some views consistency is a lot less important than a familiar face they just like- your personality is great! I love watching movies with ya.
This is a commentary on screen addiction, environmental destruction, technology dependence and megacorporations. It's not really a "beautiful" setting. It's really sad. Characters are likeable and memorable which is why the movie ranks high amongst fans, but it's really depressing.
I agree and respectfully disagree. Beauty and sorrow are not mutually exclusive in my mind. While I agree with you on how sad the state of the Earth in this movie is and that the cause of it was awful and ugly, there is a certain beauty to the landscape still. The towers of trash are depressing, but also breathtaking as you realize how much time it took to build them, like memorials to what used to exist. They are like a ghost of cities left abandoned long ago and reminiscent of the life and joy now gone (much like Once Upon a December from Anastasia). Then when Eve is introduced as she soars above the ruined land, the scenery is dull but not dark, sunlight shines and the shot is beautiful because of Eve's graceful arcs and the freedom she displayed, but it still is touched by the sorrow of the Earth's plight. What happened to the Earth in this movie is steeped in sadness and grave warnings, but there is still beauty there, like a sad song sung by an angelic voice.
I will always love the nice little touch they added to the ending with the view of the planet zooming out, how the earth still looks very dirty like it did in the beginning, but it has just a hint of a blue hue to it, showing that the earth is beginning to recover.
I had a feeling that you would love this one! 😁 A heads up: if you didn't watch the end credits, go watch them! 😊 They show some if what happened during the first time of humans being back on earth, and they are just really cute 😍 Great reaction as always 😁
Wall-E is the first and only movie I had watched multiple times in theaters. Like 5 times. All my friends and family kept going to see it and I tagged along with each group. It's like, 'Oh you're going to see Wall-E for the first time? Mind if I come along?' It's still one of my all time favorites.
I Can't watch these films without a mournful sigh of the forgotten 1986 film... Short Circuit because it is the origin of all endearing robot faces and personalities in all the loveable robot movies. and Short Circuit gets no credit and poor Johnny is kicked to the curb unmentioned and lonely.
Im here to share all the tears I bawled when Wall-e is trying to hold the detector up and... Anyways this is a very beautiful movie, I always enjoy it so much, thanks for sharing this reaction!
The working theory is that when WALL-E gets the small *zap* from EVE, she unknowingly set some sort of save state. When she *zap*s him again after his whole memory loss ordeal, she more or less resets said save file. So, if this theory is true, WALL-E doesn't remember anything that happened after the *zap* up until EVE *zap*s him the second time. (Don't shoot the messenger, just wanted to point that out.)
Such an amazing movie most people nowadays forgot about or haven't seen. The message about how Earth is going to end up like how it is in the movie; its something people acknowledge but still to this day no major change has happened. The pandemic you saw the oxygen levels rise and the air feeling more easier to breath, nature and animals coming out. But now that it's coming to a so called end, cars and many factories will start again and continue to destroy the earth
The story, soundtrack, and visuals are always beautiful!! So glad you got to see it! Also if you are curious on that song from the live action movie they showed, it's from a movie called "Hello Dolly!" If you ever wanted to, I'd say check it out as it's a fun musical.
I always get teary eyed in the beginning when he's watching Hello Dolly and he does the hand holding thing. You don't need words to tell how he's feeling
The creators of WALL-E wanted to know how much they could remove from a face but still show as much emotion as possible for WALL-E. In the end, a neck, eyes, and eyebrow analogues give a full range of emotions. It's amazing how well it works, and how much they let us learn about WALL-E through only actions. Because WALL-E and EVE don't say much, it's all about what they do that tell us about them. In fact, most of the movie's story is told with as little dialogue as possible, telling it with what you see in the background. And it does it better than a lot of movies with a huge script can. And there are so many moments toward the end that just bring me to tears, no matter how many times I watch. Without a doubt, this is one of the absolute best movies Pixar has ever done.
The cockroach surviving being stepped by WALL-E and EVE's blaster is a joke on how resiliant cockroaches are, as they can survive even in post-apocolypic landscapes that most animals wouldn't, even when an area has nuclear radition (although it's an urban myth that cockroaches can survive being dierectly exposed to high nuclear radition, they'll get killed by it just like other creatures, and in real life, step on a cockroach, they'll get crushed to death). It's named Hal after filmer Hal Roach and HAL, the computer villian in Stanley Kubricks 2001: A Space Oddesey.
That scene of Eve and Wall.E flying in space is a million times better when experienced during the World Of Color show in California Adventure...IVE SEEN GROWN MEN CRY during that part!😄🤣
I totally felt that you’d love this movie and you’d love the energy of this movie. It’s such a cute and tear jerking movie. Also, if you love this one, I’d suggest Short Circuit. Johnny 5 is like the first Wall-E without Disney and it was like a 70’s-80’s flick.
I love the bit in the credits where you see the plant in the boot grew up to be a large tree that is around when the kids that were born on earth are running round.
If you like the song that kept playing throughout the movie, then I highly recommend watching the musical that it's from: Hello Dolly! It''s such an amazing musical and is one of my absolute favorites of all time.
Little fun fact about the song in the credits: That was actually supposed to be performed at the Oscars, but when Peter found out it wasn't going to be the full song, he turned it down.
I can't be the only one who thinks the Axiom Repair Ward is just an insane asylum for the droids, considering every other robot contained there is malfunctioning like they're crazy.
Watching this reaction made me realise how much there is to appreciate. From the lack of dialogue yet unmistakable craft of a well developed love story between robots, to the way WALL.E affects every robot he comes across, spreading his human like qualities that rebel against the idealistic structure of the Axiom. The captain himself, you can tell he's not quite as reliable as you may think. He still over sleeps, so subconsciously, he isn't as regimented as the other humans but still understands his duty to perform as the captain by reminding the ship's clock. All that and more has made the film very inspiring. It helps that I saw the film in cinemas 13 years ago so I've been a fan for this long but it still resonates with me, just in a different way. Thanks for this video. It was great to see how effective the film's craft is to you.
I really love this film, just so well done considering how silent characters are for the most part! Wall-e being so expressive and relatable despite being a mostly silent and expressionless robot >< I'd also recommend watching "Burn-E" in the extra's if you have it on disc, its a little side story from the perspective of another robot and is quite funny. Pans labrynth is a great film but definitely a difficult one to place, I hope you enjoy it even if its not really one I can see you wanting to rewatch (its a bit schindlers list like in that regard)
Auto may have been the "villain" of the movie but he wasn't evil. Auto was just following his directive, which came from the last president of Buy'N'Large. The President had more authority than the captain, so that's who's order he was going to follow. As far as he was concerned, his last order was to stay away from Earth so that's what he was doing. WALL-E is short for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-class. Eve stands for Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator.
I know what it's like to have been forgotten by someone you love... I was Wall-E... I lived with my girlfriend who changed over the years and I was alone. Waiting for the woman I loved to come back. Waiting for her to remember who she was when she loved me.. I could have left at any time.. Given up and gone home.. But I stayed. Every day I would tell her that I loved her. Every day, I looked after her and the house, her car, and the pets. I kept hoping that the good person she was would come back. I would see her from time to time. Peeking though the person she became. She was still in there.... -- She died in my arms of cancer this June.. I'd taken her to the hospital and I was there every day with her.. In the end, I got the "Quantum Leap" ending... -- I spent years holding my own hands like Wall-E and praying that things would change. Sometimes, there are no happy endings. Or redemption. (addendum :. "Quantum Leap" was a TV show from the 90s in which Dr. Beckett would leap from person to person, year to year, and put the wrong things right. The last episode, ends on a black screen with the words, "Dr. Sam Beckett never returned." --- Fans were in an uproar because all those seasons of waiting to see if he gets home, and we felt like we got gypped. --- It's only when you look back at it as an older person that you realize he made the right choice. That the hero's job, is never really done.) -- In my relationship, I felt cheated. That had there been more time, maybe the good person she was would have come back. In the last six months, I lost her, the house, I had to give our pets to the shelter... And now I'm truly alone. Just me and the ghosts. The memories of the happy and the sad. And I will always be haunted by the last image in my head of her laying in a very quiet room turning blue and cold in the dim light.. No matter how long we had, it wasn't long enough. And those last months flew through me like angry birds with razors..

I always loved the tiny detail of Wall-E calling her Eva simply because he's unable to pronounce Eve, and can only say the sounds 'eev' and 'va'
Same here. WALL-E has a nickname for her that only he calls her by, which adds to the cuteness.
“I thought he was going to keep the ring!”
If he knew what was coming that day he would have ❤️
Can I heart this comment? LOL
beautiful
If someone doesn't cry during this, they are not human. I sob every time.
especially where WALL-E almost died, then EVE's rush to repair him, and his brief lost of memory and personality before EVE gave him a kiss that re-sparked his consciousness
(My chest can’t NOT drop when the machine crashes down on him owww-)
The humanity of these machines is so damn immersive~
@@niyaodom1944 facts u feel ur heart tightening a bit
Such few words are spoken, yet it is one of the more emotional Pixar movies I’ve seen.
The original ending was a lot darker: the characters that Wall E meets were aliens, but in a spoof of Planet Of The Apes, the aliens, whom look giant bowls of Jelly, are actually humans, having mutated by 700 years due to radiation exposure in space. The aliens find the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor, resembling what they once were.
...Holy crap, that ending's so much more interesting. I love the original but WOW.
That looks dumb lol
That’s not the original ending, it’s the ending they considered during the writing stages. And they were just gong to be aliens. It was abandoned as an idea early on, not only because it’s really stupid, but there’s nowhere for the story to go. Unless you’re interested in Pixar’s writing process, it holds no other value as a fun fact.
@@chrissmith6097 As someone interested in Pixar's writing process, I can confirm: that doesn't seem helpful outside that specific field of knowledge lol
Feels a lot more realistic
This movie is easily one of the best animated movies to come out in the past couple decades. So great!
when robots have a better romantic story than myself
I can’t believe I didn’t enjoy this movie when I was younger! It’s not my favorite Pixar movie now, but I love it way more compared to when I was a kid! 🥰
That was me with Ratatouille. 2000s decade Pixar man, so much quality stuff. Lol
Me w/ Toy Story and especially Monsters Inc tbh. I loved Finding Nemo, Wall-E, RATATOUILLE (fav Pixar film), Up, but wasn’t too into the first two. Monsters Inc especially has grown on me and I love it now
@@Little1Cave Same for me on both, as well as all the 2000s Pixar movies sans Monsters Inc - they just felt boring to hyperactive child me, but watching them back now, I appreciate them a lot more. They really are beautiful films in ways that that kid from 2008 couldn't fully appreciate, in the midst of his obsession with Transformers.
This movie made us Cry about two robots and a Cockroach, while teaching us a lesson in Contamination, Trash, politics, etc, this movie is just amazing.
21:17 John is his real name. His voice actor is John Ratzenberger. He's in nearly every Pixar movie. He's Hamm in the Toy Story movies, for instance.

Thanks so much so glad you like them!
So basically Wall-E and R2-D2 have the same “voice actor”? That’s AMAZING 😍
@@amy_grace Yup. That is right.

Sigourney Weaver (ALIEN movies) provided the female computer voice on the AXIOM...another sci-fi Easter egg😎
I remember seeing this in theatres as a kid and sobbing. Like I was not prepared for the emotional roller coaster that you go on with these robots that really don’t even talk. They were able to convey just so much emotion!! I love Wall-E and Eve and the cockroach… they just did such a great job at showing characters emotions and stories without words and that always stuck with me
I get so emotional when it comes to Wall-E. He's just so adorable! Him aside, I love this movie and the message and music. So beautiful.
Such a great movie! Glad you’re feeling better and finally got to this one
I'd only seen this once before, but it is so beautiful. They did such a good job conveying emotions with few words.
It really is! Surprised me so much with how good of a story it was!
Silent Running is one of my all time favorite older sci-fi movies. I would recommend it.
One of Pixar's Best! Probably one of my favourites up there with Ratatouliee and Incredibles
The only one to actually touch on this
I agree and respectfully disagree.

In the end credits they show how earth is rebuilt. You should have watched through those as well.
I will always love the nice little touch they added to the ending with the view of the planet zooming out, how the earth still looks very dirty like it did in the beginning, but it has just a hint of a blue hue to it, showing that the earth is beginning to recover.
I had a feeling that you would love this one! 😁

This movie is the definition of emotional roller coaster
Wall-E is the first and only movie I had watched multiple times in theaters. Like 5 times. All my friends and family kept going to see it and I tagged along with each group. It's like, 'Oh you're going to see Wall-E for the first time? Mind if I come along?'
It's still one of my all time favorites.
The clip is from “hello dolly” with Barbara Streisand and Walter Matthau. Though it’s the supporting cast shown on screen.
This is without a doubt THE MOST unique Pixar film. This film is so dependent on visual storytelling, but in a beautiful way. LOVE IT.
i feel like this movie will continue to be loved by people decades, maybe even centuries into the future.
6:12 when I went to see this in theaters, every adult in the theater started laughing at this scene.
Also if you are curious on that song from the live action movie they showed, it's from a movie called "Hello Dolly!"
If you ever wanted to, I'd say check it out as it's a fun musical.
The message in this movie is so great and important especially now
I always get teary eyed in the beginning when he's watching Hello Dolly and he does the hand holding thing. You don't need words to tell how he's feeling
Imagine In Deviantart With The VHS From Fantasia 1940 After To Watching Fantasia 1940 In The Movie WALL-E In Disney Pixar WALL-E

Little fun fact about the song in the credits:
That was actually supposed to be performed at the Oscars, but when Peter found out it wasn't going to be the full song, he turned it down.

WALL-E was indeed inspired by Johnny 5 from SHORT CIRCUIT, especially the eye pieces. Well-spotted!

Such an underrated movie .... Wall-E is really fantastic!!!
I can't be the only one who thinks the Axiom Repair Ward is just an insane asylum for the droids, considering every other robot contained there is malfunctioning like they're crazy.
I really hope you watched the full credits! Showed how they evolved and progressed after coming back to earth. One of my favourite parts!
Wall-e being so expressive and relatable despite being a mostly silent and expressionless robot ><
I'd also recommend watching "Burn-E" in the extra's if you have it on disc, its a little side story from the perspective of another robot and is quite funny.
