  • Not enough people remember how great Titanfall 2 was. Among its many accomplishments, it used a very well crafted first level to inspire the type of awe the series had always had at its heart but never had a chance to effectively set up. Let's look at how!

Goddammit (sorry for the language professor), it just pisses me off that this channel is so ridiculously underrated. Your analyses are incredible. There's whole more effort here than majority of RUclips channels that tackle video games. You deserve whole lot more views sir.

I almost want to mention that you do actually keep your arguably strongest mobility option at the start of the campaign. Even without the pilot kit, you can bunnyhop and build up as much momentum as you want with airstrafing.

Feel like they're often overlooked, loves the story mode in 2 and thought the maps were a bit more cramped at times compared to the first, but overall great game series and still hoping a third will come out eventually

Feels strange to essentially be watching something i already saw, after essentially having broken into the initial test screening 3 days before the official release date on accident.
Not a bad feeling, but certainly a unique one.
good to see the intro got working. :)

It’s pretty ironic that the titans are probably the weakest part of Titanfall 2 multiplayer. In a way it’s a shame they made the movement so damn sick that getting into a titan feels more restrictive than anything.

Would you consider a look at Titanfall 2’s narrative? It’s easy to overlook, but Titanfall 2 is not a power fantasy. Instead, it is simultaneously a fantasy of adequacy with a secondary story about comradeship becoming friendship through trials that spur mutual growth (by which I’m not just referring to BT, but that’s another conversation). In that, it becomes strangely more effective at connecting to an audience than other well-regarded games like, say, the classic Halo games.
You start as a noob whose purpose is - well - to be expendable as a tool and you only get your shot because everyone else who was actively qualified to do The Job has been knocked aside. You have The Mentor who whose last words to you are essentially “don’t @&$# this up...” rather than “you were meant for this!” which drives home the idea that you succeeding is not supposed to be in the cards. BT, your new partner, speaks to you with formality and unfamiliarity, calmly trying to shepherd you through the stage of “settling in” on the fly while every enemy with your radio frequency tries verbally grind you down even as you are demolishing them. The way the player is increasingly taught to leverage the movement system and new, level-by-level loadouts mirror the process of learning aspects of careers through on-the-job training. Each Apex Predator (with the exception of Blisk, but that’s another conversation) you face represents different challenges that you have to overcome throughout life from stumbled beginnings to places of unassured stability to positions of relative worth and security. You, the player, are also contrasted against the baseline enemy Pilot/Titan pairs who are treated as tools by their respective team being thrown at you haphazardly because they are seen as disposable, same as you.
Two-thirds of the way through the game, you have to rely on BT to back you up when the good guys look at you and say “good job, but maybe we should have someone else take over for you,” in order to have your effort and successes recognized as being worthy. From there, you move forward side-by-side with those who would have been considered infinitely your betters the day before and they show increasing recognition of the fact that you - whose talent was earned through hard work and practice rather than a gift of genetics or status - are actually capable of operating at their level. The final run from the point where BT is demolished has the player waking up from an actual failure, “remembering” everything they learned without anyone to hold their hand, and becoming a key part of the effort to salvage the greater endeavor. However, this takes place WITHOUT you taking over for the player’s boss and becoming a stereotypical emotional and practical “rallying point” for your entire team, instead having the boss rally the team while your new colleagues support you with a show of solidarity. Ultimately, the cost of the player’s victory came both because no one was perfect, making mistakes that had to be compensated for as things progressed but also because the Big Bad - Blisk - defies the stereotypical “force of evil” role by demonstrating a sense of professional ethics that sees him take his own victory and leave rather than show contempt by trying to settle a petty score. The ending monologue, one that describes you being elevated through the merit of your actions and accomplishments rather than as a delayed delivery of validation that was somehow meant to be yours from the start (which would have been absolutely ridiculous), is played against a montage of you shaking hands with those you would only have looked up to in the beginning.
There is so much more to say about just the story alone, about the side stories you see in protagonists and antagonists alike, etc. I could gush for days. If you think it’d be worth an in-depth analysis, I’d certainly tune in!
