That 98/99 United team was unreal. People forget just who they had to go through to win that European Cup - Barcelona with Rivaldo and Figo, Inter Milan with Ronaldo and Zamorano, Juventus with Zidane, Davids, Dechamps and Inzaghi, not to mention Bayern Munich twice (group stage and the final). Players and teams that have become all time legends were defeated by that United team.
In the FA Cup they had to beat Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool before beating Newcastle in the final - the most difficult opponents they could have possibly faced.
It's always hard comparing teams from different eras, and you can argue that football is faster and more athletic now than it's ever been, but it's also less aggressive and physical than it's ever been. Asking teams from one era to compete against teams from another is essentially asking each team to give away one of their main advantages - toughness and the ability to tackle hard (and withstand hard tackles) from one side, or the time/space to play nice football without getting booted into row z on the other.
Perhaps if we're going to compare teams from different eras, they should be two-legged games: one with modern referees and VAR, and one with a 90s approach to refereeing and no VAR. I'd pay good money to see that.

The Champions League run was very overrated. United never beat Barcelona in the groups. Inter Milan finished 8th in Serie A that season and Juventus finished 7th. They didn't actually have to play any hard teams on the way to the final and is arguably one of the easiest runs to the final ever. The level of competition domestically is also much lower than it is today.

I agree with all of Rory's choices . And to Thogden, the1970 Brazil team is considered the best national team ever by nearly all football historians. If we timetraveled that team to today, would they still perform? Absolutely not!.... for obvious reasons football has evolved in every way possible. That's why we evaluate teams through the lens of history.
Edit: the current Man City will obviously challenge the 99 Man Utd team's position if they also win the treble, but as it stands the 99 United team reigns supreme.

Back then the game was more physical and tackles were very hard. I doubt this man City starting 11 would survive a full season. Now with absolutely level pitches and fantastic balls the game has become a lot more smooth. I doubt man City team of today would get even close to as many points then as they get now. They would challenge United definitely but they look so much above that man United team right now only because times have changed and they're not facing each other off in real time. It's recency bias.

    A few important points here.
Firstly, Having a kid (Thogden) argue the Utd 99 team against the current (insanely funded) City team which he watches live is a bit daft. He wasn't even alive for Utd 99, and if so, wasn't even outta nappies.
Secondly: I doubt he's watched all games from that 98/99 season both domestically and abroad to really understand what that Utd team went up against. This was a tough era. Was the same era as Zidane, Rivaldo, Brazillian Ronaldo, Batistuta, Figo, Raul, Thierry Henry, Shearer, Roberto Carlos, Shevchenko, Stevie Gerrard, Patrick Vieira, Christian Vieri, and the list goes on and on. Some of the biggest legends to ever play. That Utd team beat some of the greatest teams with the best players in history. And won the treble!
Thirdly: You can't compare a Treble to a Centurian because you have to make tough choices towards the end of a season with injuries (especially when the game was much tougher tackle-wise). So some PL games Fergie needed to field a weaker side to save better players from the risk of injury to play in bigger CL games. This was the norm back then. So getting 79 points and winning Champions League and FA Cup was a serious achievement in those times
Lastly: United weren't owned by infinite pockets to allow them to buy the biggest players on earth. Of the squad members in 1999, 77% of the team was homegrown from the British Isles!!! They had a great starting 11, but didn't have the money like City does today to have two strong starting 11s bought from all over the world. City have only 34% of their squad being homegrown. That wasn't a luxury Utd 99 team had, It was simply owned by Martin Edwards who was handed the club from his dad and also sat as the Chairman. So it was operated on profit like a normal business rather than billions in cash injections. I've no issue with big pockets. Great for the league in some ways. But its a point to make as to the actual achievement of the 98/99 squad.
It took a very clever strategy to win The Treble in those times. And Fergie did it without unlimited pockets, plagued with injuries from loads of hard tackling in a very hard era of football. And let's not forget that Utd side wasn't under investigation or charged by the Premier League for breaking financial rules, as this City team has been.
So unless City win the treble this year, there isn't even an argument to the greatest-ever PL side.

Barça had just lost R9. They did win the league but only won 24/38 matches and finished on 79 points.
Real Madrid was terrible that year, lost 12 league games and drew 5 and finished on 68 points.
Juventus finished 7th in the league in 1998/1999.
The 1998/1999 United team finished the league on just 79 points. They needed replays twice on their road to win the FA Cup. They narrowly edged Barcelona in the group stage to advance in the CL. They beat a struggling Inter team that finished 8th in the league and were without star man Ronaldo. They beat a struggling Juve team that finished 7th in the league and then were mostly outplayed in the final by Bayern who were very unfortunate to lose.

Even as an Arsenal fan, looking back at the unbeaten season, yes it’s a great achievement but those 12 draws are a massive blemish.
    We threw away leads late on, on FIVE occasions - 1-1 Man U (H), 2-2 Spurs (A) 1-1 Everton (A), 1-1 Bolton (A) and 1-1 Leicester (A). That’s criminal.
Those 10 extra points would’ve ensured we accumulated 100 Points instead of 90.
There was also no games in that season where we are really on the ropes in terms of being behind with 80+ minutes to go, where our character would’ve really come out in the wash either way. I would say only the Pompey game away from home where we’d won the league and were just trying to get over the line in the sense of staying invincible. Reyes made it 1-1 but we did hang on a bit, aside from the missed penalty at Old Trafford obviously.

Liverpool were European Cup holders at the time something Arsenal teams and city teams never did. Also if it wasn’t for covid they would have smashed the points record. Liverpool probably would have got 105 points. Finished with 2nd beat points total anyways and this isn’t the best English sides ever it’s the PL who cares about trebles in this context Untied won leagues back then with less that 80 points which obviously means in a league campaign getting 99 points means your better. I think its very important to rule out stats sometimes, and mainly focus on the players individual ability/team ability. Also, you need to take into consideration the teams each team was playing against. Guaranteed the centurions had an easier time with the opposition in PL then the invincibles or 98/99 man U team. So its important to take that into consideration. I can win a billion cups/tournaments with my team if I played against children, but do those stats matter if someone beat a top pro team with there team?. Thats sort of my point to a lot of this. Its also something that really comes from playing actual futbol rather than watching, as the more you play at a competitive or high level, the more you understand that stats are irrelevant in many ways.

You can say Chelsea bought their success for sure. But you can't detract from gheir achievements by trying to say they outspent everyone else. When Abramovic came in he spent a lot to catch up with United and Arsenal who had a massive financial advantage over everyone else in ghe league at the time and were dominating. They did buy their success - they wouldn't be where they are now without the money. And they did/do have a financial advantage in the years that followed. But in 2004 when Abramovic had only been there a year they didn't have an unfair advantage over the likes of United and Arsenal. You can't use the money argument to take away from the 04/05 team. Cant just compare points from teams that played 20 years apart. They played different teams. Not as simple as City got 100 points so that's the best side. Chelsea getting 95 points 15 years before in an era when no one was getting near that and literally competing right after an time season in the Invincibles with Fergie at United. Idk I'm not saying they're better but context matters. If that 04/05 team played these days who's to say they wouldn't get more than 95 points - they'd be playing against different teams. I think looking at how deep each team went in each competition as well as the point totals, goal difference, records etc gives a better picture of who the better side was. I think 04/05 Chelsea and 17/18 City are similar. Chelsea went further in the Champions League, City were more dominant domestically. If City win the treble this season that's the best side ever argument done imo. Treble with 90+ points and look at who they had to beat on the way to the final - PSG, Bayern and Real Madrid. Thumped them good and proper aswell.

Styles make teams and 442 classical just won't work with this man city team because they'd drag them from wide positions and force 1v1 on the wings while united fullbacks wouldn't know if they need to stay tight inside or come out and defend more on the wings. It's about Haaland per say but more about the sysem evolution that pep came up with . United 99 would be beaten comprehensively and would barely have the ball out of their halves. Cole and Yorke's link up is up there with the best and would cause city problems
It would be a hell of a game but I wouldn't dismiss a united team that could physically dominant city into submission and have the quality to not only defend well but be lethal on the front foot and in transition pretty football works now because the game is softer but back then pep wouldn't play this tactic because teams back then would snap them to pieces
