I just read that Sakamoto has passed away. Wonderful music but sad at the same time - just the way life can be at times. I wonder what became of her (Wenxiu)!
What a wonderful scene. Goosebumps at the time I watched it on one of the biggest screens in Madrid back then. Now the remaining screens are much smaller (and fewer)but my freedom is so much bigger!!!!!
Vivian Wu who played Wen Hsiu in this movie also played some Japanese characters. 1. She played Mitsu in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3 2. She played Nagiko in The Pillow Book 3. She played Kito in 8 1/2 Women
Best scene ever... made by masters: bertolucci and storaro. Look at camera 2:14, 80% of movie directors would follow her. and what a music , sakamoto is amazing...
Fun fact: both actresses would star in the drama, Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace where Joan Chen starred as the Empress Jingren, while Vivian Wu played the Empress Dowager Zhenhuan.
David Byrne and Bertolucci turn this moment into something epic, and magical. One of the best, most universal moments in this great movie. I got goosebumps as soon as it began. The moment you cut the ties that bind you, when you realize, for the first time in your life... You are free. Epic.
and in their past lives, these 3 were *Ulanara Yixiu* (Empress Xiaojingxian), *Niohuru Zhenhuan* (Empress Xiaoshengxian), & *Aisin Gioro Yinzhen* (Yongzheng Emperor) -Ruyi spoilers tihi-
empress goes in the rain, rain can make you wet, as life can make you wet. The emperor's umbrella helped her as in the past, to avoid her from getting wet. But she is leaving, free, she doesn't need the emperor's rich means. What a great scene
oldboy: headbanging to a scene where a sad man eats a bunch of dumplings the last emperor: headbanging to a scene where the emperor's concubine leaves him for good
I watched this movie at the theater when it was released. I still remember this scene clearly with music. A woman who goes out in search of freedom.
one of my favorites scenes ever

What a poetic and beautiful melody.
"Rain"is the most favorite piece of Ryuici Sakamoto.
The music, the colours, the picture...

Goodbye Maestro.
The best scene in this movie and the best music in sakamoto’s. I love your musics. RIP

"I do not need it."
Maestro Bertolucci you are missed so deeply as well as Enzo Ungari, the first screenplay writer, whom I had the honour to meet.
She made a VERY wise decision

still married to one man even in their "past lives" teehee
That’s crazy! I didn’t know that was her either damn! 😳
And they both also played an empress and concubine married to the same emperor.
@@盧璘壽로인수 There you are! ^^ Great scene!

Epic.
This track is by Ryuichi Sakamoto, not David Byrne.
@Vejur9000 You really thought the Talking Heads guy performed this sort of music? WOW. Completely different type of music sir.
That’s empress dowager from Ruyi Love in the royal palace that’s wants a divorce! I did not know she was an actress for that long!

Name of the composer to add in the description or title : Ryuichi Sakamoto.
She had the right idea. Why continue to stay in misery? He loved his wife more. She was just a side piece who felt unloved and rejected.
I love this movie but it’s sad :(
Best part ever
Honestly I never knew rain was a song from a film, Might as well watch it anyways :D
