I really don't understand how this could be a home run tbh.. I mean, he clearly caught, and had possession of the ball before even getting to the wall? I know it's completely irrelevant at this point, but I just see this as a clear catch.
It's the Dez Bryant "catch" of baseball! Hah
+Greysen Gagné no, it was just a bad call, now that is irrelevent
It's Life irrelevant* And what are you talking about?
***** that was a bad call,
Dez Bryant's catch, it was loose.
It's Life Nah, Dez didn't catch that. If that's what you're trying to say.. I mean, he caught the ball, but didn't have possession for a lonenough time, before it popped loose. Bett's caught this ball, and took multiple steps before flipping over the wall from to much speed, and the impact of the landing popped it loose. Should have been an out..
He didn't do this to be flashy. I believe he was running at 19 mph, and running toward the wall. Look at where he catches the ball, at 0:31. He has no time to stop 19 mph by just stopping, he has to jump or something, he'll break something in his body if he runs into the Fenway right field fence.
Well Ur Obviously A Red Sox Fan So That's Of Course Ur Gonna Say That When Everyone is Claiming He Didn't Have to Go over And I Even Think that.
So Yeah He was Being Flashy
The Man Shane victoriano made a catch a lot like this a few year ago and didn't do anything but keep running and he ended up breaking a few ribs
You are right have you ever ran that fast and stoped running immediately it’s not possible
The Man one of the worst calls ever. And Mookie had to jump
@@nothinghere-wo8bi why did you capitalize every word🤨 I don’t care if it’s been 3 years I still have to point it out
He was already down, it was a clear catch! See this is why the NFL isn't being watched! 😂
By rule, it is a homerun. No voluntary release, no catch.
Speaking as a Yankees fan, I am absolutely stunned into respect by this play. Betts is a real good player to have, it's such a shame his efforts turned into nothing.
The bad call by the umps did it
@@DelusionalDemocrats Learn the rule before commenting, or are you simply too stupid to understand that without a voluntary release, it is not a catch? The umpires were 100% correct.
it was not for nothing--things always don't immediately manifest, the big contract by the dodgers and winning the world series, was all predicated upon this catch, when is the last time the yankees won? i meant "nothing" buy that question.
Omg he caught that definitely not a homerun
That is definitely a HR according to the rules.
CSGaming 13 Go away and leave the discussion to the educated adults. We don't need moronic children like yourself telling us what the rules are.
He dropped it though. If you catch the ball, then drop it, that's a fair ball.
Dumbass red sux fans
From the rule book: "a catch occurs when a fielder gains secure possession of a batted ball in flight, and maintains possession until he voluntarily or intentionally releases the ball."
Betts did not voluntarily or intentionally release the ball.
The best part of this video is the commentary by Alan Hess. Thank you, sir...you have 100% of my support!
He’s a moron.
that ball didn't look like it would have wen over anyways?
+Misael Hernandez He had clear control when he went over the fence. It's when he falls AFTER clearing the fence that the ball comes out of his glove. Bad call by the umpires that it was a homer.
+Sue Reashore That is not a catch. Correct call by umpires.
It wouldn't have but since it didn't hit the ground or wall before leaving
@Alan
Bullshit, that ball was caught and inside the fucking glove inside the damn park and his momentum goes over the wall still having the ball inside his glove and then hits the ground when the ball comes out.
The umpires called it wrong. That is an OUT!!! and not a fucking home run. Shit.
Daveyo747, Two things are required for a catch. Secure control of the ball and voluntary release. There was no voluntary release, so it is not a valid catch. That means it can only be one thing. Since it left the field before hitting the ground, it is a home run by rule. But you don't know the rule and to post such nonsense doesn't make you look too intelligent.
That was clearly an out. If he was playing basket that would have been called travelling
Not an out, it was a homerun. You don't know the rule.
"cough " Bullshit "cough"
Toy Bus Productions, Because you don't know the rule does not mean it is "BS".
Yup, bullshit call according to official rules
Should have been a ground rule double at the most because if you look at the replays especially 3:54 you can see his glove hit the side not the top of the wall which should have nullified the chance of a home run. Now weather or not that was a out I will let RUclips decide
It was a soundstage on Mars.
wwe fan4 life a homerun is a ball that goes over the wall without it hitting the ground, which is what happens
wwe fan4 life nope, this isn't football. In order for it to be a catch you must voluntarily release the ball, he did not do that and the ball went over the wall, thus home run was the correct call
wwe fan4 life “weather” or not
Worst call ever. It was a catch
A catch must have voluntary release, doesn’t matter if he had control for a long time. According to the rules this is most definitely not a catch. A homerun is a batted ball that goes over the fence without a bounce, and that’s exactly what happened
It’s a catch
@@DelusionalDemocrats Wrong again Mike. Educate yourself before commenting, or go watch lacrosse or soccer because you don't know baseball.
He’s the only player on the Dodgers team that I love.
Could not agree more
Horrible call
As a sox fan, I'd love to argue that he had control of the ball for a long enough time, but after watching the replays, it's a respectable call and I feel like it IS the right call
It's the wrong call he had the ball long enough and lost possession of the ball because he was hurt it was the wrong call
+Christopher Valentino 17 The umpires were correct in ruling a homerun. How long he held the ball is irrelevant. What matters is that Mookie did not complete the catch by displaying voluntary release. You should consult a rule book.
what... how is that "voluntary release"? he landed on his back and hit his head.. far from voluntary if you ask me.. or anyone else really
I think it was a bad call. A double or triple woulda been good. He caught it at the warning track. Then he fell over the wall. If he didn't get it in his glove, it wouldn't be a home run anyways
Tim Wenger it was not the right call
Impossible for that to be a home run. He caught the ball in fair territory and then flipped into the bullpen. Therefore that should be a ground rule double because technically even if he lost possession, that is a ball batted by a player into the stands. This would be a ground rule double. GROUND RULE DOUBLE.
James Doherty *the ball never hit the ground before going over the fence you fucking bafoon.*
Towelie bad call
@@DelusionalDemocrats How long have you been umpiring? Oh. I see, you have never umpired or studied the rules. You are just a big mouth idiot arguing something you know nothing about.
@MLB hi I’m a HUGE fan
garbage call. my grandmother could make the right call there.
Norse61 We do not need your grandmother to make the correct call since the umpires made the correct call of a home run.
You are just another homer ignorant of the rules. Read a rule book, it will help to make you not look like an idiot.
+Alan Hess if it was you you'd probably be mad about it he took two steps before jumping how could that be a homer he caught it easily
+jimmy firlotte He must show voluntary release. He didn't. Two steps means nothing. No catch. Correct call. Learn the rules.
+Alan Hess Agree and disagree. Release wasn't voluntary, but he held that ball, CAUGHT, before he fell AFTER his momentum carried him over the wall. Taking two running steps doesn't mean two "normal" steps as though he was walking toward the wall. Call was wrong.
+Alan Hess Agree and disagree. Release wasn't voluntary, but he held that ball, CAUGHT, before he fell AFTER his momentum carried him over the wall. Taking two running steps doesn't mean two "normal" steps as though he was walking toward the wall. Call was wrong.
Man suplexed himself
Why is HR if he catched it on the ground then take two step before going to the wall, if it is for the rule it should be a double. Can someone explain me what happened there? I can't understand.
+Delfo Junior If a fielder causes the ball to go over the back fence, its a homerun. If an outfielder for instance were to throw a ball over the back fence that would be scored as a homerun aswell. If the fielder doesnt make contact with the ball and it goes over the back fence, its a 2 base hit. In this situation, It's a homerun because he has the ball in his glove and then goes over the fence completly. While I dont agree with the decision I assume this is why.
Delfo Junior it was a blown call
@@DelusionalDemocrats shut up mike. You are a special kind of stupid.
What are you going when doing the
They made the right call. For instance, mccutchen when he fought a pop fly, thinking it was the 3rd out, then throw it over the fence, it was a home run. This is essentially the same thing.
No, bad call
@@DelusionalDemocrats Stop showing the world your stupidity. Home run was the correct call.
I'm not a Red Sox fan, but I would have thought it's a catch which then he loses the ball after it's already out of play. But maybe because he was never able to demonstrate control, that they ruled the way it did. In the end, this replay was more about a rules question than what physical action actually happened.
It was a catch. Bad call
@@DelusionalDemocrats 5.09(a)(1) "In establishing the validity of the catch, the fielder shall hold the ball long
enough to prove that he has complete control of the ball and that his release of the ball is voluntary and intentional."
How stupid must you be to not understand this simple rule?
Those umpires did a bad call. Mookie Betts did caught the baseball before he went over the wall to the bullpen. The right call should be out anyway.
The play should have been live still, but since everyone stopped after he went over the wall, it should be a ground rule double imo. Definitely not a home run.
Agreed
+ChewedMint Your post is total nonsense.
Yup, no way was this a home run
He had both feet down lol he’s fine
No voluntary release means no catch. Learn the rule.
How can it be a homerun if the ball fell into his glove before the wall...? Even if he didn't have control, which he clearly did, the ball would have bounced off the wall. That was a terrible call. I get what the rule for a catch is, but similarly when a fan reaches out and grabs the ball before it hits the ground, they rule it a double. The rule has to be modified and the "voluntary release" be removed. Ot should read "A catch is one thing. Controlled possession of a ball hit by the batter before it hits the ground in any circumstance."
Jerod, all you need to do is convince MLB to change the rule. Good luck with that.
And you again show your ignorance of baseball rules. It is not a double when fan interference occurs, runners are placed where, in the umpires judgement, they would have been absent the interference. You are looking stupider every time you comment.
This was clearly a catch. Horrible call
If not an out it should definitely not have been a home run because had he not caught it, it would have landed in play a few feet in front of the wall. It should have been a ground rule double. Cuz it landed in play (Betts glove) and bounced over the wall (Betts diving over).
Emma, what you describe is exactly why the umpires made the correct call of a home run. This was a batted ball that the ball left the field of play in fair territory and there was no catch.
Alan Hess it was a blown call
@@DelusionalDemocrats Nope, totally correct call.
This is not even a tough call if you have video replay. It is a home run, not a catch. Section 2.00 of The Official Major League Baseball Rules defines "a catch" and does not allow for a catch if a fielder ".....simultaneously or immediately following his contact with the ball, he collides with a player, or with a wall, or if he falls down, and as a result of such collision or falling, drops the ball.
It’s a catch

Yes can I get you number Monica?
Yep, Clearly Betts caught it and he had it for tons of time and even if it wasn't caught, it looks like it wasn't going to be a home run
Its because he took the ball over the wall with him before it touched the ground, and when it finally did come out of his glove and touch the ground it was on the other side of the fence. I think for it to be an official catch he has to hold the ball until he has complete control, say a guy is running and catches the ball and before he gains his footing back to slow down to a controlled pace he drops it... which would be an out
Yup, worst call possibly ever in MLB

the rule states you must voluntarily release the ball, since he dropped the ball it was the correct call
Sportsdude 994 since he dropped it over the fence it was a homerun
Lee Marion the catch was made inside the park not over the fence. So the ball wouldn't have been a homerun. A better call according to the rule would be no out, but a hit and ground rule double. The rule has to change because 99% of the time, an out is recorded well before a fielder "voluntarily releases the ball."
Jerod M. It would be wise for you to learn the rules instead of trying to make stuff up. According to the rule as you mention, this is a home run.

There was no voluntary release which is required by rule to complete the catch. That's why it was properly called a home run.
The funny/sad things about these comments is acting like NFL rules have anything to do with MLB. Control, possession, and steps don't mean anything. The only thing that matters in regards to this rule is voluntary release, which it was clearly not. The call was right.
You can be mad about the rule, but the umpires made the right call.
So if I catch a flyball in left and I'm running towards the infield hesitating, hesitating, undecided where to throw the ball and I trip and fall 8 seconds later and balls comes lose, it's a hit. This is a simple call and obviously a homerun to people who know the rules. For a catch to be a catch, you must control the ball and perform a voluntary release of the ball from your glove using your hand. He obviously didn't complete that action. A homerun, by rule, is a ball that travels over the outfield wall without hitting the ground which is exactly what happened. Just like when the ball hit Canseco's head and went over. Umps completely got that one wrong ... it might not have been a "good" catch -- although it appeared to me that Mookie had possession of the ball long enough -- but it was nowhere near a homer ... rewatch the replay, and you can see that the ball would have landed in the warning track IN FRONT OF the Sox bullpen had Mookie not gotten to the ball in time. How/Why a homerun was awarded here baffles me.
Keep trying Michelle, but you are still wrong in almost everything you wrote. The umps were completely correct. The length of time the ball is held is not a factor in determining whether or not a catch is valid. Secure possession and voluntary release are. The ball left the field of play in fair territory and there was no catch. According to the rules, it can't be anything but a home run.
Alan Hess This wasn’t a home run. It was a blown call
I do think he jumped on purpose, he was going full speed and he would have fucked himself big time if he kept running straight into the wall.
That was a horrible call and shouldn’t have been a home run but he jumped over the wall for no reason and injured himself. Low IQ.
WesleyAPEX it's because if he ran into the wall running that fast he could break a couple bones
From the rule book: "a catch occurs when a fielder gains secure possession of a batted ball in flight, and maintains possession until he voluntarily or intentionally releases the ball."
Betts did not voluntarily or intentionally release the ball.
👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎 u
Your are a fucking idiot
WeaselAPE 29 thumbs up from morons like you. He made the choice of taking the wall in his shoulder our trying to roll over the wall He made the right move Low lQ
No way was that a homerun he had complete control for a while before I landed on the back of his head and dropped it BS call
Shawn Sr, you are another baseball "expert" who has no clue. Home run was the correct call.
Alan Hess no it wasn’t correct. This was a bad call
that is so fuckin rud3
My cousin knows nothing about sports and he would have made the right call
We don't need your cousin to make the call since the umpires made the correct call.
Alan Hess No the umpires did not make the correct call
@@DelusionalDemocrats How about you post a rule that backs you stance? You can't do it can you?
Are there any Boston commentators who aren't biased? I thought it was just the NESN Bruins commentators but these guys too... if he drops the ball it's a home run. He dropped it.
Bluffer first, that's not a homer, he controlled that, and at the very least it's a double. Second, these people are payed to be apart of a network that analyzes Boston sports, what the hell else you'd expect?
NE Patrul
If you knew the rules of baseball, you would know this is a home run. Shit, even Red Sux fans are biased. Go read the rules
NE Patrul, How can we take you seriously when you don't know the difference between payed and paid? or apart and a part. Maybe you should repeat the third grade.
Bluffer stick to hockey you don’t know the rules
Toad, he is right that it is a homerun. It appears he knows the rules better than you do.
that is a horrible call. Even if he didn't catch it, it would not be a home run
Tucker Strack The rule is clear that the fielder must show voluntary release to complete the catch. Everyone saying it should be a catch are wrong. Their opinions do not matter when the opinion is in direct contradiction to the rules.
I would suggest anyone wanting to learn the rules should go to umpire-empire and post their questions which will be answered by qualified umpires.
Alan Hess this was not a good call. No home run
It looks like he wanted to fall off
It was a blown call by umpires
