- A lesson on the Chicago blues harp mastery of Carey Bell (Harrington), one of a handful of great players who worked with Muddy Waters. Your host, Adam Gussow, offers an appreciation of Bell's style and shows you how to play a few of his riffs. You'll need a diatonic harmonica in the key of A to play along.

Dear Sir. In 1971, I bought The Muddy Waters London Sessions featuring Carey Bell Harrington and admired him ever since for his work on this album. It took me a long time to figure that he used a çhromatic harmonica for most of the songs. I still never tire of listening to this great album to this day. It's one of those albums that remind you of a time and place in your life when I hear it. Thanks.
I'm not sure. I do know that he really liked 3rd position chromatic playing. What I think you're hearing is his fondness for sliding sequentially off the high draw notes: a quick little upward move--up one hole, then slide down two holes. He'll repeat this move two or three or four times. The draw notes are all chord tones in 2nd position, but you might say that the licks are 3rd position licks.
Loved Carey Bell harp, especially his cd Good Luck Man. My Love Strikes Like Lightning is such a fun song.
Carey Bell, my favourite blues musician 😊
Hi Adam. Every time I get despondent about my harp playing or start to doubt why I do it, I can count on tube Gussow for a hit of inspiration. I just watched your video on busking followed by this one and now I'm buzzing again. This is why I do it. Thank you !
Great lesson (great playing, too). Thanks, Adam.

your playing was really sharp in this lesson adam. Carey Bell was brilliant.
Nice , brings back a lot of memories , look forward to seeing you in Denver
Agreed. Carey Bell really made the harp sound sweet and musical. Not as stiff and predictable as many. Love the soft smooth flowing rhythm without a break and find it very hard to keep still listening to his music.
Even though I have given up on my brief attempt at learning harp and have just focused on getting my guitar playing down, I am still awed by your command at the harp and love watching all your vids, Really makes me think about getting out my harps and trying again :-)
Mr Carey Bell from "Harp Attack!" Thx, Adam ...
Good work there Adam. Carey is on my top 5 list. Lazy Lester is another one we would love to hear a lesson on.
Hey Adam, Been watching your videos lately and you are doing a great service.
You can feel the music & you do know your stuff. After many years of playing and not analyzing the music it's a bit of a challenge. Creating improvised riffs is a new way of playing for me.. I will get there...Thank you :)
this one is steaming Adam. I met Carey Bell once.
@GOLONDRINAS18: You're quite right, and I was sort of saying that. He slurs onto the 6 draw more than the 7 draw. I'm not sure that he intended to do that, but that's what he does. You've got good ears!
Thanks Adam.
I learn a lot from this video !
Nice swinging riff!
Yeah, another great video!
Thanks, Adam! I have the A harp out today anyway, practicing blow-bends. This will give me something to do between terrorizing the neighborhood dogs with my renditions of "bright lights-big city" and "tb sheets"!
I love Carey Bell. bless u, adam. ;-)
is that chord vamping that you play in the beginning? and if so, how do you play that?
Hi adam, do you think that when carey plays in 2nd position he throws some third position in it? like he would combine or merge those two positions.
Hello Adam, do you think that when carey plays in second position he throws some third position in it? it sometimes feels like he merge or combines those two postions.
Big like
Thanks Mr Gussow, I love the blues by Mr Bell & his guitar's brother. Here we're talking about a musician who plays with all his soul!
