I really never noticed which one I use. Now, I'm going to pay attention to how I crochet ! 😅
It's interesting to figure out your own preference! 🧶🧶🧶
I was thinking the same thing 😄 I've never really paid any attention to which way I do it, now it's all I'll be able to focus on when I crochet next 😂
I find that both relatable and strange, because as a beginner, one of the first things I learned was to yarn over and always bring the hook towards you when attaching it to the yarn. But also, I've accidentally also done it the other way.
same I didn’t notice I was doing yarn under 😅
Definitely yarn over! I just can't be having to think about changing how I grab the yarn with every stitch. I would have to frog my project constantly.
Haha!! Me too!! 🧶🧶🧶
This is what i'm about to say too 😂
my first thought, too 😂
Maybe it’s just because I haven’t been doing crochet long when I heard about this stitch a couple weeks back, but I can do both stitches really easily without thinking too much about it, it’s like a simple switch In my brain of muscle memory and after the first few stitches I don’t have to think about it, yarn under gives a lot more shape to detailed patterns but yarn over I think is better sometimes because I used it to crochet a snake face and the transitions between increases and decreases came out way too harsh in that one so I used yarn over for the face to make it look softer
I used to be like that but then I just got used to it after doing it for a few minutes and now I actually have to think before yarning over 😭
i've accidentally learned to do yarn under when i just started crocheting, and now i can't relearn no matter how hard i try 😅 i love how neat those stitches look on toys!
They do look nice! 🧶🧶🧶
@@EliseRoseCrochetyes they look awesome just wanted to say when all I knew how to do was chains I yearned under them when my fines were teaching me to crochet thy forced me to do yarn over until I got a hold of it 😂😂
I've done both but I prefer yarn under. Especially when selling toys. Parents are always fascinated with how neat the stitches look
It really does make lovely little stitches! 🧶🧶🧶
I prefer yarn over it’s how I learned and it feel more comfortable
Not that I think you’re an expert but recently I made the switch and I noticed that sometimes using this stitch makes animals with soft faces look too harsh
Do you think this would be an issue with my stitch consistency? Or is there a time and place for each stitch? I’m new
Yes, I was going to say that I love how tight the YU stitches look!
I’ve been a yarn under all this time and didn’t know it til last year. Love that it uses less yarn. 🧶
It does make pretty little stitches too! 🧶🧶🧶
ive been using both all at once, like not keeping track and switching between the two during one project 😭 i didnt even realize there was a difference
Yep there is a difference! ❤️
I never realised I was a yarn under until I watched this 😂 I feel like such a pro for no reason now
Haha!!! It's fun to try both ways to see which one works best! 🧶🧶🧶
I’m team YO because that’s how I learned! I’m a self taught crocheter and never realized I could do yarn unders until I saw this!
Same, I just started learning recently, and yarn under feels weird and uncomfortable to me. As someone who often gets tangled even in simple stitches, I think I will stick to YO for now :D
I find the terms yarn under and yarn over so difficult to conceptualize for some reason. It’s helpful for me to think about it as clockwise or anti/ counter clockwise. I don’t know why!
That makes sense to me! I have to think about where the yarn is in relation to the hook! 🧶🧶🧶
I know I always thought about the hook so the the word "under" makes me think of yarn over but I just made a trick where I usually just tell myself it’s the opposite of what I’m visualizing and I hold the yarn so that the hook is very clearly going over or under it so it’s easier to visualize and I don’t get confused
Yarn under! It makes my stitches tighter, so I can use a larger hook!
Thanks for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
Under for sure! I really cannot stand when stuffing shows and the under I think helps with that.
Thanks it sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
YU,YO. I love the X shaped stitches for amigurumi. 🥰
They do look nice! 🧶🧶🧶
Yarn under!!! It was weird to start at first but now it's weird to yarn over!
I ALWAYS yarn under. It just feels so much neater and more satisfying as it builds up. Plus looks nice and tight, perfect for amigurumi.
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
When I first started crocheting I learned to yarn over, so that's what I've stuck with this whole time. I didn't realize yarn under resulted in smaller stitches! I think I'll have to try that with my next amigurumi so my yarn skeins can stretch a _little_ further 😁
Yep! The toys end up being slightly smaller as well! 🧶🧶🧶
Now knowing both stitches it makes crochet so fun! There’s more variety and because of muscle memory after I decide to make the switch it only takes me a few stitches and then I don’t even think about it
Interesting. I only just started to crochet. Totally blown away by all the options and possibilities.
It really is amazing!!! Welcome aboard! 🧶🧶🧶
I"m a long time crochter n i watch alot of video"s to me it"s crazy how many different ways people hold the hook n yarn
this is barely the tip of the iceberg
Yarn under! You end up with a neater, tighter stitch. I've tried both ways and always do my amigurumis yarn under.
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I learned to crochet yarn over when I was 6 years old. After 60 years of crocheting…well, you know what they say about old dogs, and new tricks!!!
Haha! Love it! 🧶🧶🧶
Yarn under for amigurumi, but yarn over for all other crochet 😊
I'm impressed that you can switch back and forth!! 🧶🧶🧶
Same for me as well
@@EliseRoseCrochet It’s definitely brain-bending 😆
same
I also do that
I honestly didn't know that there's any difference but after watching this short, must say, I'm a yarn 'overer' ;)
I yarn under, but not because of using less yarn; it's just how I learned. In fact, I didn't even know that it used less yarn!
I guess you learn something new every day!❤
Never knew about yarn under. Looking forward to trying it next time 🧶
It's fun to experiment with! 🧶🧶🧶
I'm leaning towards yarn over lately since I like it when my amigurumis are really squishy, but I still use yarn under from time to time if I want a project to hold it's shape more
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
Holy crap... I KNEW you could do the alternate yard under but I have never even thought to try it but I definitely am going to now!! That looks AMAZING for little stuffed animals! Thanks!! ❤ Will be trying very soon!!
It's fun to experiment to see which one works best! 🧶🧶🧶
As i pretty much taught myself to crochet from pictures, I was using the yarn under method without even knowing. But then, when I started watching more youtube tutorials (after crocheting for a few years), I naturally switched to yarn over and now I'm having a harder time switching back.
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I do yarn under on everything just because that’s what the tutorial I learned from used - didn’t even know there was a difference!
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
Im a beginner with crochet, i didnt know there was a difference. Thank you for teaching me something
You’re welcome 😊
You hold your yarn just like I do! 🎉❤
I've recently converted to yarn under, yarn under (2nd part too).
Awesome!! ❤️
I never realized it but I’m a yarn under for everything. Not even just plushies and stuff. It just feels so much faster
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I've been yarn under ever since watching your video about it! Game changer for the aesthetic for me, but hands definitely need a break more frequently 😅
I yarn over, but I think I'm going to give yarn under a try ^^
It's fun to experiment with! 🧶🧶🧶
I was a yarn over crocheter and didn't think it would matter. But decided to try yarn under and see how different it looked. I am converted and prefer the yarn under as I think my world looks neater. ButI have seen beautiful work both ways by others.
I'm team "both". I know how to do both, and have naturally tight/neat stitch tension, so depending on the look I want, I will use either stitch. I love the look of yarn over because, to me, it looks warmer and friendlier for cute amigurumi. But on highly detailed amigurumi, yarn under provides the type of stitch definition I seek.
I look at them both as being of equal merit, with neither being better than the other. Just as I love having many colors of yarn to choose from, I love having multiple textures and looks to pick. YO/YU are both tools in my toolbox.
Thank you for sharing!! Great info!! 🧶🧶🧶
Exactly my thoughts. ❤
I’m so glad that I watched this video all the way through because this whole time I’ve been thinking that yarn under required putting the hook over the yarn both times, not just while the hook is through the two loops at the beginning.
My daughter is team yarn under, and I'm team over. She's also a pencil gripper, and I'm a knife gripper.
That's very interesting!! ❤️
I'm going both ways as far as amigurumi is concerned, but I'm team ELISEROSE! I'm also definitely team Lobster-I am obsessed! He's so adorable!
Yarn over feel more fluid but I love the way yarn UNDER looks. I think both have their place though.
Possibly even in the same piece. ❤
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I crochet about 8 years now and I am mind blown about the fact that there are two different ways to do a single crochet. I always did the yarn under method. But I might try yarn over for my next project 🥰 thanks for your videos🥰
It's fun to experiment with! 🧶🧶🧶
I usually switch between the two depending on how im holding the needle, wasnt even aware it made a difference
It does make a slightly different stitch! 🧶🧶🧶
I do both, I learned yarn over first and still use it for some of my plushies. I use yarn under for my cat and dog toys because they make tighter stronger stitches which helps hold up longer to sharp teeth and claws. 🐾
I just switched to yarn under on my last project and it looked so much neater
Wonderful! Thanks for sharing! ❤️
I have always used yarn over but I’m interested now lol and I could save a LOT for yarn over time 😂
It's fun to experiment with! ❤️❤️❤️
When I’m making any stuffed toy I always yarn under. **I love how it almost gives a solid fabric look** And it’s really helpful with hiding decreases and any stuffing that might poke out a little 😂
Thanks for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
Im team yarn on hook, im still learning so im just happy to get the yarn through the stitch in one piece
That's a great place to be! 🧶🧶
I visited my neighbour to learn crochet from her. I loved it and started creating the chains. It's basic and I will visit her again after 2 days, after I get accustomed to today's pattern by practising.
That's wonderful!! 🧶🧶🧶
Definitely team yarn under for my amigurumis. I like that it makes a more compact stitch that I think gives the piece more structure. 😍
Thanks for sharing!!
I use a mix of both because I never realised the difference till now
It's fun to try both! 🧶🧶🧶
I only recently tried the yarn under, and I love it.
I was always a yarn under until I learned that it’s hard to do for a triple crochet (which I dont do often anyway). Now I do both just depending on how tight I want my work.
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
yarn under. i’m a lefty so when i learned from youtube i mirrored the videos to my left hand resulting in me yarning under
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I'm going to try YU for my dryer balls.. I think it will be a nice tight stitch for that!
That's a perfect project for it! 🧶🧶🧶
after crocheting for almost 1 year, I keep telling myself that I was doing yarn over because I was only following youtube what to do (did not observed what method they used either yarn over or yarn under). But as I crochet again, I noticed I was constantly doing yarn under in all those 1 year 💀
It was very comfortable so I didn’t notice I was doing yarn under in all these months that I thought I was actually doing yarn over 😅
Sounds like you found what works best for you! ❤️
Yarn under looks nicer to me. It takes a few minutes to readjust before and after an amigurumi project, but it's totally worth it!
Thanks for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
I always use yarn over because I'm used to it and I go fast
Plus, I really like the end result 😁
Me too! 🧶🧶🧶
I had to train my brain to yarn under but it was pretty easy and now that’s what I do 😄
Thanks for sharing! ❤️
I didn’t realize i yarn under most of the time because it gets a good rhythm goin
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I use yarn over for everything except when I make a plush. I prefer the look of yarn under for those
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I didn’t know about yarn under technique!! Thanks I am excited to try it and see how it affects my tension 😊 thanks!!!! Love your channel ❤
I have just started doing crochet and had been making a couple tiny amigurumi. I've never noticed yarn over or under makes any difference cause I often use both in one project lol 🤣 tysm for these, I most definitely pay a closer attention when crocheting 🧶❤
Was naturally "yarn under"-ing for weeks while dc-ing making a giant granny square blanket without realizing and had a small identity crisis trying to re-train myself Y/O.
Haha!!! I think it's a pretty common thing to do! 🧶🧶🧶
I will have to try yarn under next time. I'm still learning. I learned the traditional way.
I was a yarn over gal but since becoming a yarn under gal it’s been a game changer and I can’t do it differently now and sometimes I get mixed up switching between blankets and garment stitches and amigurumi stitches.
I went yarn under, and I never went back. It feels so much better as well!
Thanks for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
I am team Yarn Over. I am too busy counting stitches and trying to get the thing made between baby feedings, diaper changes, loads of laundry, and the next meal prep. 😅
Goodness! That's interesting! I have been yarn over but I'm definitely going to try ysrn under! Thank you for this.
I always do YO for amigurumi since it's better for decreases and increases, but YU for clothes and wareables since its thiner/smaller and looks cool
i didnt know it would change smth ! ive only started crochet (i did 2 plushies and thats it 😂) and i only do yarn under because it just feels easier/more comfortable to do for me i didnt think it would change how the stitches look like 😂 thanks for the informations 👍
You're welcome! 🧶🧶🧶
Im a beginner and I heard someone say yarn under in a video, thank you for clearly explaining the difference ❤❤
You’re welcome 😊
Oh so cool someone talks about this! I change depending on what i make, if its a sleeping animal for example i would make Vs because it is slightly...calmer? The Xs i use for "moving" postures :D
That's such a good tip! Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I use a combination naturally!
Interesting! 🧶🧶🧶
I’ve never tried yarn under. I feel like it’d slow me down a lot but maybe for a quick small ami I’ll try it!
I had fun experimenting with it, but I'm a yarn over gal! 🧶🧶🧶
@@EliseRoseCrochet I started a new little ami project tonight and... I forgot I was trying yarn under almost immediately. I think I'll have to stick with yarn over!
After the first time trying yarn under I prefer it even subconciously when doing non-amigurumi projects! I didnt know it uses less yarn too, even better!
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I’ve been making amigurumi for about 6 years and just started yarn under. Took a bit to wrap my brain around it but I prefer it now
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I YU for amigurumi and then YO for anything else. I usually do more basic things like granny squares to remembering when to yarn under/over isnt really too much of an issue for me.
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
i only learned yarn under when i started (thank you tiny amigurumi kit) so i never learned how to yarn over lol
it makes my stitches on garments super neat at least
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I only started crocheting a few months ago and Ive just been doing yarn over. Might try out yarn under one day and see if I like the result better, but itll probably be difficult to switch.
It's fun to experiment with both to see which one works best for you! 🧶🧶🧶
I have always been using yarn over.❤
Thanks for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
Stoppp your plushies are so adorableeee
Haha!! Thank you!! ❤️
I wish I'd known this was a thing. I just finished my first piece. Ive done crochet for years, always yarn over, BUT when doing this Amigurumi I was pressed for time because it was a gift. I worked until my hand hurt and I know I did yarn under at times because it was more comfortable. I had wondered why some stitches looked so different.
I've been crocheting for 2yrs now and I never even knew this even made a difference. But now I'm definitely gonna try on my next amigurumi, thank you!
It's really fun to experiment and see what works better! 🧶🧶🧶
Awww that pig is so cute
Yarn under but I do it for both the stab and strangle and the strangle and pull through two.
Thank you this is the best explanation. I think that I finally understand the difference. I think I'm a over person
Glad it was helpful! 🧶🧶🧶
It’s come to my attention I’ve been yarn underwing wrong😭 I do over/under rather than under/over😅
That's ok!!! When you're doing amigurumi it really doesn't matter. If you like how it looks, then keep doing it! 🧶🧶🧶
I prefer YU due to the way I hold and crochet, I've been doing this for 15 years and just learned last year that I've been doing this lol
That's great that it came so naturally to you! 🧶🧶🧶
Hello Elise.i do both . thanks for sharing your gift with us 😺
Yarn under all the way! Certainly for amigurumi, but I also crochet most things that way, unless the pattern absolutely requires otherwise. It just makes neater stitches and is easier on my hands.
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
Yarn under for amigurumi was a game changer! ❤🎉❤🎉
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
yarn over!!! I always yarned over and dont feel the need to change!
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I'm always yarn over ❤ So I'm fascinated by this 😊
Thank you! 🧶🧶🧶
Yarn under! It’s how I learned to do it when I first started crocheting!
Thanks for sharing!! 🧶🧶🧶
Well, you learn something new every day! I never knew there was a difference! I am starting an amigurumi today and I will try yarn under. I have always yarned over by habit. Thanks for the tip!
I never knew there was a YU. Ive never seen it in a pattern or used in the amigurumi videos ove watched. I will have to give it a try and see if i like it better!
It's a lot of fun to experiment with! 🧶🧶🧶
I use the regular stitch for blankets and sweaters but for hats I use the the yarn over gives a tighter stitch
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I've been doing yarn under without even realizing it was the alterative way!! Its just the way my mother taught me how to do it!
oh dear😂 i think i might do both randomly while crocheting, i need to work on that
It doesn't matter which one you choose for amigurumi, but it is good to stick to one or the other! ❤️
I’m so glad you are talking about this. I bought some amigurumi kits and the yarn over is the way it should be done. Thank you for this ❤️
You are so welcome! 🧶🧶🧶
I am yarn under for everything that’s just natural to me.
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
I can't remember to consistently do yarn under! I just started a new project doing YO and I'm already worried my arms won't match 😂
I'm team yarn over, but it's fun to try yarn under! 🧶🧶🧶
Yarn over 🧶 😊
Thanks for sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
