This is the single most underrated snl sketch of all time. Seriously
Truth
Nah not really
The critics reviews are the best part.
Agree. Damn funny and pretty true to life with some theater productions
@@sublimeade SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!!!IT IS!!!
True story; my freshman year of college, a friend of mine worked for the school newspaper and asked me to write a review for a play I had not seen. He said he needed them for his portfolio and that they would never be scrutinized, just filed away.
I, along with my roommate helped him out and quoted the reviews in this skit. We were quoting these to each other all of the time and knew them by heart.
Long story short, they were mixed up with other reviews and added to the actual reviews. Lots of the people were really upset with us and the cast and crew apparently worked really hard. It was "Annie Get your Gun" I think.
Apparently thr straw that broke the camel's back was; "I woke up during the play and walked around the stage, and no one seemed to notice or care".
This made me genuinely belly laugh. Thank you
I laughed so hard at this. Thank you for that.
That's awesome. I'm dying laughing.
Hahahahahahhahahahahahahahahhahaha
How did they react to “the only time that the audience applauded was when I whipped a battery at the actors.”
I always love the random sailing jargon they shout out. Half of what they say would literally destroy the ship: "Scuttle the jib", "Puncture the bulwark", "Scuttle the crow's nest"
"The only time the audience applauded was when I whipped a battery at the actors." - Cincinnati Dispatch. I was crying!
Should’ve been a Philly paper, but I guess if the performance is that bad...
She spent about three days in the can over that, but it was totally worth it to see the Goulet brothers just drop to their knees in anguish...
Ana Gasteyer’s face when she’s pulling away from Will’s advances still has me falling out of my seat laughing 🤣🤣🤣
Ikr? She looks so horrified and repulsed and can't understand why he isn't. 😄
“I don’t think this legally qualifies as theater” 😅🤣
I love to randomly sing "hoist the main sail and scuttle the jib!" This skit is amazing.
Will Ferrell's Robert Goulet is definitely the impetus for Ron Burgundy...
"We won't come home for a fortnight / for reasons undetermined!" and "This line has yet to be written" have never failed to make me laugh since this first aired.
And all the other verses about oiling the main engine and checking the compass!
@@Farr50 "...before we get ON the AIRPLAAAAANE!"
@@yellowblanka6058 uh-oh, now you've got me singing that part too!! LOL
I love that all the Goulets insist on wearing their smoked aviators
Hah! Is that what you call them! I thought it was just "designer glasses". Love it!
Sailing the high seas demands it...
Anyone else randomly start singing Red ships of Spain, Red ships of Spain....This line has yet to be written
seriously I do that heaps, I have no problem looking nuts because it's just too damn funny
i did
What? Sergeant, you've gone crazy!
Randomly? Intentionally!
Si mi amigo...
For years, I've remembered every word of that Goulet-to-Sheila song. And the fact that pirates would be wearing designer glasses makes it all the more hysterical. ".....your gentle kisses in my chest hair"!
When I first saw this skit, on the best of Will Farrell, I was the only one of my friends that laughed. I haven’t forgotten this skit since (about ten years now). Now all I can think is, damn, my friends have no sense of humor. This skit is gold.
I come back to this skit at least once a year. I remember seeing it live on SNL and also laughed throughout.
I remember watching this with my brother when it first aired and we laughed so hard. It's hilarious.
Your friends have no sense of humor. Though to be fair it's possible they were young enough to not know who Robert Goulet was - though even if you were unaware of him, the general absurdity of the situation/Will Ferrell's theatrics are always funny.
@@yellowblanka6058 exactly. The skit is just ridiculous and over the top. I didn’t know who Robert was at the time and I found it too funny. This skit is 5 star classic.
@@Nerdynate253 it’s so brilliant. One of my top ten skits.
My six yr old and I are always singing “Red ships of Spain, Red ships of Spain”. He loves it! It’s such a brilliantly hilarious sketch of absurd stupidity. Humor that transcends its time. The writers were AMAAAAAYZING during this period!
same, my daughters and me sing all the parts in this sketch
no way this is happening. maybe red shitz of pain
Glad to know you are raising your child right! Red Ships of Spain! 😂😂
"It’s Captain, Ken! And maybe you would know that if you’d memorized your lines instead of drinking straight Kahlua in the theater bathroom! You’re a drunk"!
“Where is my hat? Where is it?!”
“Is THIS the hat you were looking for??”
“HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, oh, pirate!”
Such bold humor, isn’t it? 🤣
Fantastic! Even the narrator --- Darrell Hammond, I think? --- absolutely nails the sketch.
Goulet's daughter pulling away everytime he tries to do something romantic is priceless
This is one my favorite skits . Yes truly lost gem of snl skits . Look for this skit for years .
I have a very difficult time picking my favorite anything in life, but this is an all-time top 10 SNL sketch. I saw it live and have laughed for 21 years. It's so, so, so good. I have no idea why there are not 8 million views.
I come back to it like a fene 😂
@@Exodus26.13Pi Yeah, I'll watch it again rn, thanks! Lol
3:49 If that bit where he is trying to kiss his daughter went on any longer, my neighbours were going to make a noise complaint
I’m worried I’m going to end up with a collapsed lung
😂👏
When he's getting real close and cupping his lips while she grimaces and leans back, HAHAHAHAHHA!
Me too!
This looks and feels like the pre-conceived idea baby of Ron Burgundy.
Absolutely. I agree.
You can see the gestation of the Ron Burgundy character in all of Will Ferrell's portrayals of Goulet on SNL!
Burgundy's musical talents lie in Jazz flute though.
@@nystagmus Speak on brother, I've had enough of gold, trinkets and jugs of wine. (I tired)
I wonder if there were any smelly pirate hookers in this musical…
I just love this absurdity of this sketch
One of my all-time favorite SNL sketches! I still append to the end of many sentences... "for reasons undetermined."
That and “this line has yet to be written 🎶” are the two lines that stil will pop into my head to this day.
Also the bit about the audience member whipping a battery at his head.
Tony Dungy, an NFL coach and play reviewer.
The best thing about Will Ferrells Robert Goulet impression is that it's based on absolutely nothing. 🤣
I saw Robert Goulet perform in the early 2000s and the voice and mannerisms were very similar to Will Ferrell
Robert Goulet was a real singer 🙄
@@HotdogFiend69Yeah and this impression isn’t far off. 😂
What’s even better is that the real Robert Goulet absolutely enjoyed Will’s impression of him.
I love the implication that every single member of the Goulet family wears smokey aviators at all times
Robert Goulet was actually quite entertaining in Naked Gun 2 & a Half. And he provided a convenient Target for Elvis Presley's gun when Goulet appeared on TV and Elvis was watching
Did he ever. Elvis hated Goulet. Tom Jones, however, mentioned in his autobiography that Goulet could drink any rock star under the table.
I loved the Naken Gun movies growing up!
Oh wow never knew that. Why did Elvis hate em?
@@chaseroush6503 now that is impressive if true(Peter O'Toole
My absolutely favourite SNL skit of all time!
It's so clear 🎉
The best part was that when this sketch aired, the theatre they mention they’re planning to open at had a musical still running there for the last 5 years
I never realized this was a skit! I’m related to Robert Goulet distantly and this is so funny 😂
I remember watching this for the first time. I cracked up so hard! Will Ferrell and Alec Baldwin are great together!
Hey, it's still better than the 2019 version of Cats...
Anything Will Ferrell and Robert Goulet related is gold
Hilaria Baldwin could’ve played the role of the “sexy” “Spanish” Princess Consuela. LOL
Too funny. 😂👏
I have watched this 50 times and it still makes me laugh.
One of the most underrated skits!
BassHeadJazz you know what, you’re right
That's it! Shows over!
I was falling asleep watching a video on the HMS Victory, so I came here to wake up and get a quick laugh. This skit never fails!
I can’t stop watching this. I haven’t seen it since 2001 but I remember every word
I know Will plays Robert in other sketches, but this one's my favorite
This sketch never fails to make me laugh. It's good shit.
Same here. I've watched it probably over a hundred times and something ALWAYS makes me laugh each time...
I've had this song in my head for about 3 years now. And in no way is that depressing. No one knows what I'm talking about though! They're totally missing out
"The man Time Magazine once mention"
For reasons undetermined.......
This line has yet to be written.......
That's because it probably doesn't legally qualify as theater.
I managed to get tickets for the touring show with Billy Warlock and Carl Weathers. I don't know how it ended because I had a minor stroke just after the second interval when the stage was left empty for a full five minutes. Thankfully I have regained full use of my leg.
You my friend, are who Red Ships of Spain was made for.
Ben M You took the words right out of my mouth!!!!!!! Hoist the main sails!
Billy Warlock, lol
@@chinookvalley Scuttle the jib!
This post has yet to be written.
There’s a lot of subtle laughs you only notice after watching a few times. It’s a classic sketch imo.
The reviews seal the sketch 😂😂
I find myself singing for reasons undetermined in public
Yeeeeeep😂😂😂
SNL is too scared to post the Robert Goulet “Coconut Bangers Ball” sketch, I assume...shame, that was hilarious.
Bought the snl best of will ferrel literally just for that sketch
It's not on RUclips but someone uploaded the whole bit to Vimeo.
@@SomeDumbKid1Cool, I’ll check it out.
"I should've never saved you from drowning all those years ago."
“You’re a loser, Ken! That’s why I-AGH!”
Might be my all time favorite sketch
9 comments? 225 thumbs up? This skit was a gem. Pure genius! Eleven years after Robert's death, and I think he would have found it hilarious! Sail on dear Robert, sail on!
chinookvalley dam. I didn’t even know he was dead.
@@therealtoxicbeast2267 I didn't even know he was sick!
"I can't stand that guy!" (as he pulls out his revolver & shoots the t.v. screen.)
- Elvis A. Presley
.
17 people like Blue Ships of Portugal instead.
Wow.
29 now. What is their problem?
This is just one of the MANY great skits SNL has produced.
I remember when this skit first aired, I vhs taped it to watch at a later time as I couldn’t watch it live. I got that vhs tape mixed up with my Mother who thought it was her latest episode of Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman. My Mother was screaming throughout the house that I had accidentally taped over her show and she was furious. With tears rolling down her face, she yelled: “Robert Goulet’s stupid new pirate show commercial is here for all to see!” My Brothers & I were on the floor, laughing. To this day, she thinks it was a real commercial. 😂😂😂
"oil the main engine"🤣
The reviews kill me. "The only time the audience applauded is when I whipped a battery at the actors."
This right here is the most underrated Ferrell skit on this show. Robert Goulet exists so Will could play him
"The Man Time Magazine Once Mentioned." XD XD XD
On HBO’s BARRY, Stephen Root’s character is currently using the alias “Ken Goulet” and IT MAKES ME SO HAPPY
Legendary sketch. Hilarious.
I would seriously pay money to see this. Ticketmaster here I come.
What horror.
The Houston Dispatch critic is named Tony Dungy. I love those subtleties they stick in there!
I have always loved this, but this is a masterclass in cameo by Ana Gasteyer.
This has to be the funniest character Will Ferrell has ever done..........!
Ken should have never saved Robert from drowning....all those years ago.
Ben M Ken never had the gifts Robert had.
like George Bailey saving his brother in it's a wonderful life. 😂
The voice is back 🎼🎤
Cracks me up. He's hilarious
When Will is trying to kiss Ana he looks like a big-mouth bass in a vest.
1:29 one single note from Baldwin for the entire verse
I always wondered what they were laughing at as they were looking through the spyglass
Immensly under appreciated
Robert Goulet when hired for Naked Gun movie was speaking to the producers of the film” it says here in the script my character enters the room wearing a very nice dress jacket. Now do I get to keep the jacket?”
It doesn't get any better than this. With "Wes" and "Ken" Goulet....
The reviews are just too funny
Check the compass and oil the main engine 😂😂
Poncture the Bulwarks and scuttle the Crow's Nest!
Holy fuck, this sketch has been up here since '13 and I'm only finding out about it NOW?!
I love all of the bad reviews!🤣😂
That was long overdue.
Ferrell's gesticulations are astounding
That's one fekked up moon!
Oh, Pirate!
Well, I guess they don't have the other skit posted when he croons in the car. That is a Classic.
“Where’s my hat! Where is it!!”
“For reasons undetermined”
Hilariously spoofy. Goulet trying to tongue kiss his daughter, the song "Red Ships of Spain", the terrible reviews from unknown newspapers and reviewers, Goulet singing while smoking a cig, etc. 🤣🤣🤣
This sketch is better than piñatas and old Spanish castles
The narrator sounds a lot like the narrator who did the narration for Don "No Soul" Simmons (David Allen Grier) from Amazon Women on the Moon 🤣😂🤣😂
i started doing the "reeeeed shiiips of spaaaaaain" in H.E.B. at like 10:45 (they close at 11) and i heard someone laugh 4 isles over. love this sketch!
Don't forget to puncture the bulwarks and scuttle the crow's nest.
That is crazy hilarious.
OMG, who wrote the "James Gund" review? :D
Right?! It had me 😂😂😂😂
Bro whipped a battery at the actors🤌🤌🤌🤌🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶. Smart….
I love how the 3 brothers are basically all the same person.
How the hell does this only have 83k views?!
This only has 25k views....
Inconceivable!
Likely because it's been hidden for several years. SNL likes to upload videos but not make them available to the public.
Who won the Grammy for best New Artist 1962? Bob Dylan- NO. Beach Boys- NO. Otis Redding- NO. It was goddamn Robert fuckin' Goulet!
Can we please have the Robert Goulet All Holiday Special for Christmas?!😭😭😭 🎄
This line has yet to be written!
