The words, "enough is plenty", keep resonating with me. Some people just don't know when to stop. Shopping, eating, drinking, talking! Enough really is plenty.
"No joy in shopping any more"??? Good lord. JOY??? Actually laughing out loud. 😆

shopping has become a big dopamine hit. The corporations count on people having the addiction.
Shopping at least for some now can be seen as it is. One must be more mindful about how much is enough? What is really needed to be happy? Not MORE stuff.
I hate the word ‘consumer’. Faceless...mindless... rather citizens, or customers. Being more mindful with purchases, buying what is needed...being treated well and supporting each other in communities...

Blessings to all at Bealtaine Cottage. Yes, many of us are thinking of new and better ways of living at this time. I don't shop very much these days. I eat more grains and lentils and only food shop once a month or less. I have unread books and unwatched DVDs on my shelves and I am enjoying these now. I have read about minimalism but feel more drawn to "enoughism". I feel drawn to returning to rural living when I retire in a few years time. Sometimes rural bungalows can be too big and the big lawns seem too much for me. I have wondered about planting trees for beauty and willow for heating fuel. Even in my city garden, I take a natural approach. I have ferns, honeysuckle and a glorious rambling rose which blooms for about 5 months of the year.

Good morning Colette from New Hampshire. I so enjoy taking walks with you and Jack over my morning tea.
It is not quite 9am here. 60 degrees F and there is a tang in the woodland air that hints of Autumn 🍁. There was a plump chipmunk rummaging about the fenced raised beds. I forgot to close the door last evening. They love to nibble on the cherry tomatoes, which I don't mind, as long as they leave me enough on the vine to dehydrate. They are lovey to watch play, but please stay out of the attic! I too prefer silver to gold. Regarding the subject of shopping. This year has found me sheltering in place at the farm since mid March. I have been focusing on bringing in, what I feel we need in order to get us through a New Hampshire winter. Items run the gamut from pantry dry goods to canning jars, freezer bags & paper, hygiene necessities, art supplies, garden seeds and supplies and kitchen items. No diamonds. I just finished an amazing book and thought of you. The title is REFUGE by Dot Jackson. It is about a young married woman, Mary Seneca Steele, who flees an abusive situation and travels to live with her father's family in the Blue Ride Mountains, her two children in tow. The year is 1929. I read it on Kindle and loved the book so much that I ordered hard copy. I was there with Mary, clearing out the resident mice from her Grandmother Daisy's cabin, lighting the old fireplace and scavenging twigs for the kitchen wood.
stove. A brilliant story of courage and mountain living.

I agree with you on so many things Colette, you are like my sister! I also do not enjoy very hot and humid weather so am a cool babe. Although I love the sun I need to feel cool air around me. I have also never enjoyed shopping and have never understood why some people have regarded it as a "hobby". I have bought very little since the start of the pandemic, only food when needed and no clothes this year. I am intending to now buy as much as I can from charity shops. I need very little. I also only have silver jewellery. Gold does not appeal to me at all - I think it is probably to do with my colouring as my sister and nieces feel the same as did my late Mum. I love all your videos Colette - they bring much calm and peace to me. Blessings and love to you and Jack 💗

I always get a real pleasure of seeing one of your new videos. I not only enjoy seeing your garden and getting a sense of your calm, but also enjoy your perspective. Your comments on gold were very meaningful to me as I have been trying to raise awareness of an abandoned gold mine near Yellowknife, the Northwest Territories, Canada, called the Giant Mine. It has been abandoned for decades, but it's a very big problem because there is enough dioxin stored there, created from gold mining, to kill every person on Earth! Canadian taxpayers are paying for the cleanup. This problem has been addressed for decades and it's still a big problem and it's getting bigger because of Global Warming-which is causing the giant concrete dioxin storage containers to warm. This problem started decades ago when there were different attitudes about our health, environment and investment, but honestly I don't see a big change if the Canadian government and banks are funding the Oilsands, which is an environmental catastrophe. I've said enough, but if people want to do something, I'd be happy to make some suggestions. Thank you!

Another thought...almost 20 years ago when I first had a computer it would take ten minutes to warm up. Things loaded oh so slowly. This meant that if it wasn't really of value, you just didn't bother. These days you open the laptop and you are ready to go, much much faster.
There is a downside to this convenience - one can waste hours on the internet googling this and that, just because you can. Whilst you are doing this, precious life hours and time in the garden are being lost. So, slow can be better for us. I have certainly been happy to wait for your beautiful website to load, Colette, because it is of such value.

I enjoy listening to the process you live so much. It is so helpful to hear another person sharing their observations about how our lives have changed. Thank you for honoring the magic of the land and the lifeforms that occupy it. I used to be able to take walks in the forest each day with my dog at one point of my life. Now I reside in an urban area because it is where my spouse needs to be for his children. I have constructed an alter that reminds me of the magic of life. I am fortunate to have a garden nearby that is visited by the messenger hummingbirds. I have not stopped trying to build a sanctuary for my spirit.
Please forgive the length of my comment. I am far too long winded. 🙃. But I love the moments that I feel the energy of life and the freedom of a child inside. Thank you for your contribution to showing your beautiful home and sharing your perspective.

But it has nothing to do with what’s popular or bling or not, it’s what matches our particular coloring and chemistry. None of us wear it to extreme anyway. Gold softens me.

Champagne gold is a much softer and more mellow shade than the rich orangey shade that is often on offer! I like silver too! Very happy to see you here today Colette. You bring some sanity and calmness to my day. My Mum used to take me up to London to buy a new coat for Christmas when I was little and I was allowed to wear it for the Lord Mayor's show in November! I don't like gold or diamonds either. To me, they are so ostentatious. I like things that are simple and earthy. And like you said, I think my skin tone is better suited for silver anyway.
I feel people shop out of boredom. Which is a sad state of mind. We as a people, always seem like we have to be entertained. When joy should come from simple things like our gardens/Mother Earth and our homes and families. That's where true happiness lies.
You mentioned that people are starting to reset their value systems. I totally agree because I have seen so many more people lately gardening and taking note of their property and turning their lawns into vegetable gardens and concentrating on the home more than ever. So, yes, I totally agree with you on that.

What a wonderful video! Your comments about gold and the eighties made me laugh so much. I've never been a fan of gold and I'm not especially keen on shopping either. It's interesting that people are waking up to the damage which can be caused by consumerism. It's very refreshing to hear. Many years ago I had a boyfriend who would go shopping every weekend even if he didn't need anything. It seemed to be a constant grasping for something which didn't really exist. Ever since then I've been more mindful of purchases and indeed visits to the shops. Thank you, as always, for sharing and inspiring.

“The Shoulder Pad Experience”!!! That’s absolutely brilliant, especially since I used to wear them and they seemed odd even then. What an idea, that we had to even LOOK bigger 🥰. Don’t have gold or diamonds either & don’t want any. I make silver or copper jewelry but never wear any. I’ve beeen married for 40 years but have never worn a ring, which many people think is “daft,” as you would say. Thought about getting a bone through my nose instead but decided it would be too much trouble. I wore makeup for a few years in high school. That was that. I’m completely baffled by women who never go anywhere without their “mask” on. (Not the kind we wear because of Covid.) Don’t color my hair or have my nails done. We’re all just a bunch of iconoclasts here, at least it feels that way to me and it’s very comfortable ❤️💕🎈🤸‍♂️🤸‍♂️🤸‍♂️

It has always seemed to me that shopping as a form of entertainment was a curious thing. I feel as though the Great Mother has tried to alter the course of humanity gently, as time will change the course of a tiny stream. Finding her children to be unyielding and stubborn, stronger measures have come into play. People now find themselves strangers in a strange land, so to speak. Some are waking up and seeing, perhaps for the first time, that abundance lies round about and in the bright light of that truth, the dark shadow of fear, that grips so many, flees. But, for others fear holds them in an iron grasp. Gold is still being held up as a savior for unsettling times. My thought process is probably different from many...but I feel that perhaps the reason gold is not found in abundance isn't because it is precious...but because it is of little consequence. Had I to choose between a nugget of gold and fertile land....I would choose the treasure that grows, nurtures and breathes life into every blessed thing she touches.

I chuckled when you said that you thought gold was quite blingy. I found an antique ring for my wedding band and it's yellow gold. When the jeweller who was sizing it saw my ring they said something along the lines of "yellow gold? Isn't that a little dull and old fashioned?" Funny how everyone's tastes are so different.

Cannot agree with you more , in the long run the changes that are coming about in perceptions and attitudes will be a very good thing , shame it has taken such a terrible illness to turn this round though..... .’no joy in Shopping’ ....I have heard this said too amongst people in the U.K. . Personally I dislike shopping at the best of times unless it’s for craft supplies or plants (that’s a different matter entirely !) .....but the greed and selfishness in human consumption has / had to stop as it’s so destructive to our wider society . For every ‘winner’, I believe there are always so many that pay a price they shouldn’t have to whether it be low pay or human living conditions ....anyway just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your podcast and although I have lived in the UK most of my life now I was brought up in West Cork and (whilst not at present obv ), I visit regularly . Thank you .

I agree...gold ...sadly...has become a symbol for greed and gluttony....for some....but it is man that hurt its reputation...because gold is really just another natural mineral of our beautiful earth.

Lovely video, calmed my soul which is a little frazzled today.
Just a thought - you could move some of the older blogs and photos to free websites and then make links from your main website to them. All the information would be stored and accessible to all, but it would make loading the site easier so more people can peruse your delightful words of wisdom and your stunning photos.

"The shoulder pad experience"...yes such an apt description... consumerism where I live in the US is such a curse...it doesn't bring people peace, it sets up a cycle of discontent. Combine that with the culture of toxic individuality in the US and we're in a real pickle. I hope the pandemic spawns new and regenerative ways of being and living.

Let's go shopping was a day out with a friend or my dear aunt...it was more of a lunch...visit...and walk around the mall and check out the sale's rack's . It's now no fun mask's. ..can't try on clothes can't eat out. Now when weather is good we meet at the park and bring our own lunch from home to enjoy our visit but shopping no fun anymore.

Before I forget, I’m a silver girl as well. I don’t even wear my gold wedding band anymore-quite a few years back, I bought a silver band for $5 dollars and my hubby is fine with that. Silver and the goddess are one in the same 😌. As far as shopping, here in the US, people have switched to online (Amazon, etc) and it has increased incredibly!! Sad isn’t it that there are far more beautiful things to be doing than shopping and no one has realized it yet? Thank you Colette for the morning chat that went along nicely with my cup of coffee. ❤️ Bright blessings to you and Jack on this lovely day 🌛🌝🌜

I wish all those people who rushed out to holiday places after the lock down would respect the changes for good and take their pollution and litter home with them, pure selfishness ... Frankly , I never found any 'joy' in shopping... I still see it as a necessity , but during all this I had to go shopping each week for elderly neighbours... therapeutic? .. Not on your Nelly! Enjoy the enchanted beauty around you... x

Hi Colette, I certainly don't want to dissuade you from your feelings about gold, but did you know that it's believed to come from supernovas and arrived here during asteroid bombardment about 4 billion years ago? It is literally star dust!

*I'VE FOUND THAT EVEN COATING YELLOW GOLD POSTS OF EARINGS, I CAN ONLY WEAR THEM FOR 3 MINS BEFORE IT STARTS ITCHING & ANY LONGER MY EARS GET SWOLLEN & SORE. I'M JUST FLAT ALLERGIC. I'M GREAT WITH & PREFER SILVER ANYWAY. SILVER & SAPHIRES!! WHEN I FORAGE, I DO SO FOR 1-2 DAYS WORTH ONLY.*

I'm allergic to gold, yellow or white gold. The wedding ring left blisters. Got divorced, sold the wedding set, made a new friend and had the cash to get the house ready to sell.
