I was in the Theatre Arts school at Fresno State when I went along with a friend to his audition for this film. I'd grown up on a farm and knew my way around horses, and the Director, Hans Fussel, asked me if I was there to audition. I told him no, I was just there with a friend. He asked me to read anyhow...and I ended up getting the role of the self-centered cowboy Skip Harper. I had so much fun doing that film...and I think it's a very well-done movie that still holds up today. By the time the film had it's opening, I was in San Diego working on an M.F.A. in acting. When the producers called about attending the premier, the head of the Drama Department told me that I couldn't go...that if I wanted to waste my time on some film opening when I should be working on my scenes and concentrating on the "Legitimate Theatre" maybe I didn't belong in the program. Well, one of my greatest regrets has always been that I didn't go to the opening of More Than A Champion with or without his approval.
I carried around a 16 mm copy of More Than A Champion that the producers sent me for decades until I finally lost it...and I'm so happy to find it here on RUclips.

So glad that you added this to Utube. I lost my VHS copy long ago and wanted to find another. Wilbur showed this movie as part of our Pioneer Faith Festival in Selma years ago. He gave one of his great sermons afterwards in his clown costume and many came forward giving their lives to Jesus. So blessed to work with him.
