I saw Paul Simon in concert in 1991. He must've had 20 people (including three singers) on stage with him! He performed for two hours...and he opened the show with this song! One of the Top 5 best concerts I've been to.

Absolutely! Saw him in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and the audience responded the whole evening. I believe there was a spotlight on a section of folks in wheelchairs, and they were close enough that PS could easily see them. When Call Me Al started, they were popping wheelies and “dancing” like crazy. He came to the end, turned to the band and did the whole thing over again! Best concert of my life.

I’ve always loved this song. The drums are phenomenal, the words are brilliant, and the vocals are just right. It’s a deep song that only holds more meaning as I get older: The cross is definitely in the ballpark now.
I LOVE this channel. Your reactions are joyful, your interpretations are interesting and intelligent, and you exude positivity and sunshine. Thank you!

I remember reading somewhere that the famous "the cross is in the ballpark" line came to him after seeing the Pope conducting a Mass at Yankee Stadium on tv.

Where the songs on Graceland were infused with music from South Africa, the songs on his follow up album, The Rhythm of the Saints, were infused with music from Brazil. The video for "The Obvious Child" was shot on the streets of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, one of the oldest cities in the Americas. "Some people say a lie is just a lie \ But I say the cross is in the ballpark \ Why deny the obvious child?" --Troubles are manageable so disregard the naysayers and get on with life! Carpe diem!

Thank you, Fay. Another song that keeps that head moving. The fighting you see in the begining and ending parts is called Capoeira. It is a brazilian martial art and was created by slaves in colonial times.

I love Paul Simon's brilliant "Graceland" album but I think you can argue "Rhythm of the Saints" is as good, if not better. Paul or Bob Dylan (take your pick) are America's finest songwriters.
