Imagine what they each were thinking back In Vietnam. I bet never in a million years could they picture themselves 40 something years later apologizing eye to eye and shaking hands. Sad that many men lost their lives among those years, but happy that there is peace now. Even though the war was pointless, we still have to respect those men who died on the battlefield for serving when called upon, and gave their life for us. If you actually think how much each person had to go through back then, it hurts to.

In my eighth month in Vietnam, I embraced the Vietnamese people. For the first eight months I was on the DMZ in Quang Tri Province and had little to no contact with the civilian population. I requested a transfer to a unit in Quang Nam Provence south of Da Nang, where we had a great deal of contact with the villages and peasants. I tried very hard not to harm them. I became completely disillusioned with the war once I was in close contact with ordinary men, women, and children in Vietnam. Up to that time, I was very respectful of PAVN soldiers, but, they were soldiers like me, and it was their duty and my duty to kill.

+TheClownz View You will encounter different reactions and different responses from the Veterans you say that to. I'm a Vietnam Era Veteran, USAF Feb. '70 - Jan. '74, and the following is mine... "Tim O’Brien, a Vietnam vet and the author of the acclaimed book “The Things They Carried,” told me that his war’s vets who believed in the mission like to be thanked. Others, himself included, find that “something in the stomach tumbles” from expressions of appreciation that are so disconnected from the “evil, nasty stuff you do in war.” The more so, he said, “when your war turns out to have feet of clay” - whether fighting peasants in Vietnam or in the name of eradicating weapons of mass destruction that never materialized. But doesn’t their sacrifice merit thanks? “Patriotic gloss,” responded Mr. O’Brien, an unofficial poet laureate of war who essentially elevates the issue to the philosophical; to him, we’re thanking without having the courage to ask whether the mission is even right." www.nytimes.com/2015/02/22/sunday-review/please-dont-thank-me-for-my-service.html?_r=0 I enlisted because I couldn't afford college, and didn't know what major I wanted to pursue even if I could have afforded it. I enlisted because, if I didn't, I'd probably be drafted anyway. I enlisted because I was the son of a WW2 Vet, a Navy SeaBee. I enlisted because it provided me with a reliable job, good training, experience I couldn't get anywhere else, and a steady paycheck, room and board included. I enlisted because I wanted to be available and prepared in case some other country invaded America, my home. I enlisted because I thought it was the right thing to do at the time. I still think every one of those reasons was right and valid. What causes "something in my stomach to tumble" now, when I hear "Thank you for your service." is the realization that the highest leaders of this Country put me and thousands of my contemporaries at risk and in harm's way for a lie. In a deeply visceral way, not visible but definitely felt every time I hear it said, "Thank you for your service." I feel betrayed by those leaders, and slightly ashamed for my part in believing that lie. I served honorably, yes. But my service was not used honorably. I find that to be a cold and heavy "honor" to carry.

I did not hate, or even dislike, the Vietnamese, the NVA. However, I, in competition with them. would not, could not allow them to hurt my brothers beside me.
you can never hate an enemy only respect them enemy soldier or not they are your brothers either way
Because the government told you to do so, correct?
Juice iL yes and no they only hated each other because their leaders ordered them to but deep down two enemies that went through the same hell they become ironically enough good friends
I guess when you are ordered to fight you don't care who your enemy is, he said it himself it was "his duty".
Juice iL exactly
I only wish I could have that strength and clarity at 87 years of age.
All my Anger and hate just disappeared...Rest in Peace Grandpa
HE should be the one apologizing to THEM and asking for THEIR forgiveness
This is beautiful, just beautiful. No more words I can think other than that.
kashi tey but that's a good thing in a way, we need to learn to put aside our differences and live with each other like humans should.
watched the vietnam war in netflix and find this very beautiful video.
man the Vietnamese people are amazing
I spend 7 months in Vietnam without being in that war. The Vietnamese people are really great.
It‘s a sad thing that young people are fighting in wars against each other. In any other situation these young soldiers would be friends and relate to each other. Glad you found peace.
another beautiful example of the fact that no matter which side we fight on....deep down inside, we're still human.
Man just got 40 years of regrets, guilts, shame, nightmares relieved. Imagine that.
Then should have never been there

That guy fought every big empire and survived, what a legend
Old Tiger looks like he had a good few glasses of the wine, bless him.
When I went to Vietnam, I was shocked, I actually felt guilty (even though I'm team Ali). There is so much evidence of what we did to them but they were the nicest people. When you to the jungle you can see why we lost...
Good. I am so happy for everyone here . The Vietnamese people always hold a special place in my heart .
This man should be in History
"There is no forgiveness necessary, as you were just doing what you were ordered, and if did not come from your heart"
Translation: a human being, realizing his former enemies are just as human as he is.
I love it.
+John Flagler Thank you so much for sharing that with us. I can't imagine what having that experience must have felt like...all the emotion and inner-conflict that must have stormed inside you. I wish, one day, war will only be known in the history books, and we can ALL just laugh and eat with each other, like the men in this video.
+John Flagler if you can pls tell your Senator to help our country to clean dioxin/orange agent they still affect on childrean of the people that get spray agent orange/dioxin . + my grandfather are NORTH VIETNAM ARMY OFFICER he fought the france since he 15 year old ( that time our army call vietminh ) then after 54 he and his division in vinh long ( south vietnam) move to north ( and france/pupet state move to south dual to paris treaty ) and he fought you guy during vietnam war he do not hate american people the only thing he dont like i think the us gov :) i remember when i was kid in 2003 i and my granddad chear for the iraqi and hope they win you guy :) and my mother/father/grandmother and sister on american side and they say you guy gona win :) and my grandmother/sis/papa/mama was right :)
+inoue jerry , so who did you want to win? I am a red blooded american, my father fought North of Saigon in 1968, he had a lot of issues after the war, I don't have an issue with the Vietnamese people, not sure on my feelings anymore about your government, but I am curious as to who you wanted to win, I love my country, and would die for it, but that doesn't mean I necessarily support everything my government does, but I always support my military, our fathers were taking orders and protecting their country, just like our friends and family are today.
I know it would be a small chance, but just wonder if you met my mother in-law while you were in DaNang
I'm Vietnamese. You spared the lives of civilians best you could. I think your conscience is clear, and we hold no grudges against you. I'm sorry for how you were treated in your country.
Now they can sleep better at night knowing they don’t hate each other anymore :)
Thank you for sharing this
A great lesson in compassion. Wonderful and touching.
This touches me for being apart of my step dad’s family, all from Vietnam. Some of them were in the middle of the Vietnam War and migrated on small boats across the world. I’ve never had a chance to be in Vietnam, but my gosh, for the Vietnamese people I know, they are some of the most genuine, wise people I’ve met. This just reminds me of that.
It's nice that people can come together like that
this is the most beautiful video ive ever seen

Congrats for all veterans from both sides...
We have to learn and remember about the past to not make the same mistake again.
How the world could learn from this. God bless & thank you for your service
What a great video. It simply illustrates how regular people are just that... regular and the same. The people fighting were not the problem.
Very special moment thank you for sharing God Bless
this is the most hopeful and fantastic video I've seen on youtube, we, brothers and sons of nature, need to unite and leave our inside primate back.
sorpendente despues de tantos años de ser enemigos, los sentimientos y los recuerdos, existe el perdon de ambas partes. muy buen video.
Thank you all for being so brave,, I'm so proud to see you all break in the bread and forgiving each other and I always had the utmost respect for the Vietnam veterans I'm still in a lot of days weeks in the VA Hospital and Dallas and Waco and some of those guys are still over there mentally I'm glad to see some healing for once so we don't make the same mistake twice y'all have a lot of knowledge to share with the world please do it takes a big man to admit he's wrong God bless you all and especially the Vietcong for being so open forgiving it's contagious and makes me feel good and I am one tortured soul, thank you all for your sacrifices,,,
What are the Americans going to forgive VT vets for? The women and children of Vietnam was killed, burned alive and starved to death.
Thank you men and women of our U.S armed forces, and any branch for their service. - USA civilian/patriot
Others, himself included, find that “something in the stomach tumbles” from expressions of appreciation that are so disconnected from the “evil, nasty stuff you do in war.”
The more so, he said, “when your war turns out to have feet of clay” - whether fighting peasants in Vietnam or in the name of eradicating weapons of mass destruction that never materialized.
But doesn’t their sacrifice merit thanks? “Patriotic gloss,” responded Mr. O’Brien, an unofficial poet laureate of war who essentially elevates the issue to the philosophical; to him, we’re thanking without having the courage to ask whether the mission is even right."

I enlisted because I couldn't afford college, and didn't know what major I wanted to pursue even if I could have afforded it.
@@4y6857 extremely profound words sir, you have brilliant insight
US army are cowards and tear ore ist
The war is over. Now it is time for both sides to join hands and make this a better world. I have no hatred for the former enemy who almost ended my life.
After 1975 - the war is not over - North Vietnamese torturous- killing thousands South Vietnamese peoples (women and men). They steal every things from South Vietnamese peoples…. (lands - houses- $$$$ - every things they can steal .
😞 😔 😢
I want to hug this man.
Very emotional, yet very joyful. Tears of joy.
But it takes courage to man-up to ask for forgiveness. Hallelujah. Amen.
Time really does heal. Enough time passes and old hostilities that at the time were full of hatred, bitterness and anger are all gone and replaced with forgiveness, understanding and kindness. I absolutely love when old enemies come together and embrace. Maybe someday i too will do the same to anyone i currently harbor hostile feelings for.
Forgiveness always come next after everyone's short coming....love you all!. This is from the Philippines.
This has to be healing for all involved
Respect to everyone. We need to love one another.
Gosh! I can’t even imagine how terrible that war time was. It must be very terrible. I saluts to all these people, no matter which side they fought for, once they are brave enough to go to the battlefield, they are heroes. They have my respect.
manly tears have been shed.
Regret pure and simple on that Marine's face.
all the vc look so happy
This is incredible
Truly amazing
