Your discussion at 25 mins is really insightful regarding gon: gon is composed because having someone provide him an opportunity to help them makes him feel better usually! When gon feels bad or inadequate, he tries to help others to try to salvage his self worth (im thinking of him going to help leorio and kurapika in the hunter exam after being humiliated by hisoka, for example). Going on a date with palm makes up his broken promise with her - something he feels responsible for - and therefore allows him to feel better about himself, even as his cope denial over kite largely paints over his other self worth issues.
Regarding Palm and the date and the unsavory aspects of everything: I really appreciate that youre open to looking at Palm in various ways! though there is no doubt in my mind that the date with Palm is meant to come off as uncomfortable, unsavory, grooming type behavior of a woman demanding a child treat her romantically. I think the thing to ask is WHY this is happening at this point in time, why togashi is spending chapters showing us all this - he wouldnt if it werent important to the themes of the arc! I believe that juxtaposing this seemingly cute wholesome outing (with bleak implications of grooming a child) together with killuas own arc trying to protect gon from rammot is very purposeful. The person who’s enjoying this little date with gon is not the person who is thinking deeply about how gon feels, about gons safety and wellbeing, about his future. Simply put, palms superficial love (taking advantage of gon so she gets attention and affection from him) is nowhere on the level of killuas love. The one who should be staying and fighting by gons side is not palm!
Regarding Palm herself (and your discussion at 30 mins), I tend to feel very ambivalent about how Togashi wrote her, I think she is very important to the themes of this arc, and yet she is written in a kind of clunky way here. All the same im really happy and touched that you are putting this level of thought into her character, since most people just hate her off the bat. I think asking about why she is such a disaster is really important - how was attention and affection withheld from her to make her into such an impulsive, dysfunctional, emotionally disregulated person who thinks its okay to seek that attention and affection from a preteen? It makes me feel very sad for her, though I can never excuse her actions and dysfunctional behaviors here. I think looking at both her egoism in prioritizing and forcing upon others her own feelings, as well as her loyalty to others (such as knov) allows you to resolve her contradictions and see her as a whole person - two sides of the same coin, as it were.
Shes a significant piece for the themes of chimera ant arc!! Relatedly, a lot of her talk on love when she is introduced comes back later in the arc - no spoilers, but the idea of respect as a pivotal component of loving someone, for example, is examined in several ways! Im hopeful that you will enjoy Palm and truly appreciate what she does for this arc!!!

Like yes she's not 'normal' duh! but the question is "why? what happened to her? how did she become like this?"
Do people really believe she was born this way? come on! I always thought that she maybe was abused by her dad or an older man in her entourage when she was young and maybe that's one of the reasons why she's (on one side) attracted to someone like Gon : young, innocent, harmless, nonthreatening, someone who treats her right and takes her seriously
Obviously nothing will come out of what's happening with Gon (and I don't think she expect more than spending some quality time with Gon, nothing physical for sure) but she's happy enough in the moment having a good time and Gon is happy to do just that for her in compensation of that promise he couldn't fulfill
Gon's concept of a date is as we see here : making the girl/woman feel special and spending a good time ...he probably started with Mito who wanted him to grow up to be a proper gentleman and learned more about what kind of activities women do enjoy on a date from those women who surely enjoyed how cute and genuine this kid was (Mito definitely wouldn't allow smth inappropriate but they play here with that ambiguity Killua's reaction is quite funny)
I'm very curious about how Palm came to know Knov and became his disciple, must be a very interesting story...
I'm equally interested in Morel's encounter with Knuckle&Shoot, Wing with Zushi, Netero with Bisky etc ...the master/disciple relationship is very special

@@Madmax-jg7kw Not really no. People love Hisoka, Filmbuff does as well, nobody is calling him a pedophile defender? Nobody is saying Hisoka was abused and thats why hes aroused by Gon because thats not the story thats given to him, he's aroused by power and people's potential (so that he can defeat them) which is weird in itself but interesting, most people with nuance are able to see that. The reason why Palm is different is just because...her personality is different to that of Hisoka. Everybody knows that it's weird that she wants a date with Gon, but people are allowed to wonder why? Espacially since she seems to be more "into" him when he's showing care and affection. Same with Knov, she gets giddy when he shows he cares (even tho hes a bit more aloof). It's just good writing! Nobody is excusing her behavior like you're making it out to be!
@@Madmax-jg7kw imo this is interesting regardless of whether they're man or woman. it is pedophilic, and it is treated more as a light joke because she's a woman, something common here in the west but even more common in japan, but it's also normal in japan to make characters like this for the sake of it, to present pedophilia as a villanous/creepy trait that's just one consequence of their personalities, instead of a dealbreaker that says everything there is about said character
its the same with hisoka really, people know he's a pedophile and talk the topic because so many people excuse it, but when talking about the character itself it's not brought up, we know he's like this the question is WHY. if people dont talk about this about palm is because she's honestly uninteresting compared to all the other characters in the arc, she's not a bad character and i like her a lot later, but she doesn't have her own voice, yknow
@@azealia573just want to point out that while yes, Hisoka is aroused by strong power and potential, he did stare at Gon & Killua’s butts. He may or may not have done that if they weren’t ripe with potential, but that moment in of itself shows he’s attracted to the boys physically.
@@UltimatePower01 Thats true! I think his attraction to Gon and Killua (whether or not it's due to their potential) is definitely more sexual and predatory! I think both Palm and him are predatory just in a different way (her more like putting on unrealistic and unsavory romantic expectations on Gon than anything sexual) :p sorry if it wasnt clear!
