- Mr. Yuzo Sebata is one of the most well-known tenkara anglers in Japan. He keeps his fly-fishing simple and enjoys backpacking in the mountains of Japan catching trout and foraging for mushrooms. When we went backpacking together, he brought along a very simple fly-tying kit, which he pulled out at our camp by the stream and proceeded to tie a fly. Watch to see how he ties flies without a vise and with very simple materials.

Simply amazing. This inspired me to start a new habit of collecting natural materials around the river and tying a fly with mostly found items, exception to the thread and hook of course. It is quite fun to see what you come up with and has been generally successful in catching fish. I think Mr. Sebata would approve

I’m new to tenkara thank you for what have been doing in all the research I’m doing to learn about this gentleman is a great honor into some of the other senior Japanese men that have made this a beautiful art Although I am turning 52 this year I feel like I’ve been re-inspired to learn something new I can hardly wait to catch my first fish using this method I hope Daniel we get to fish one day and I can learn from you thank you for your time

What part of Japan is Mr. Sebata from? My mom and her family were from Ashio in Tochigi prefecture. This area is very mountainous with many steams. From what I hear my grandfather (ojiichan) a poor lumberjack by trade used to fish the streams of Ashio to feed his family of wife & 13 kids. This was before WWII. I went to visit my mom's inaka back when I was 6 years old. Her village had disappeared by this time her parents living on a small farm in Chiba prefecture that my father had purchased back in 1949. Anyways I was curious if you ever had the chance to fish in Tochigi prefecture. I left in 1966, and have never returned but dream of fishing the mountain streams of Ashio one day. Please keep up the great work. I especially enjoy the videos shot in Japan like this one, very nostalgic for me.
