Is this better than the ‘official’ version? I dunno. That’s a pretty bold claim. The official version can still give me goosebumps 35 years after first hearing it. It’s pretty bonafide, but this can definitely stand toe to toe with it. Gotta love the extra verse too. I can never get enough of Kim’s voice, sooo…..
To answer my own question, yes… this does *SLIGHTLY* trump the original, if only for the inclusion of the extra verse. I’ve listened to it repeatedly, and each time it becomes more apparent. Albini was a fool… not that that’s a big surprise. I’ve come to expect exactly that form of short-sightedness from his holiness over the years. Most overrated producer ever.

Because Albini’s a pretentious dick, and most likely demanded that it be left off “for the sake of art”, or some such pudwankery. That’s my guess anyway.
Pixies remain my favorite band of all time. Brick Is Red was always a beloved track - but this is the first I've ever heard of a demo. Georgeous - Thank you!

I could almost see him deliberately choosing inferior takes (not that I think there’s anything “inferior” about the official version of this song. It’s pretty much perfect), given the choice. For all the hype he incurred after this in the early 90’s, he still proved to be a pretentious wanker in the long run. I know that there are still many who toot his horn, but I’ll go to my grave standing by my word that he’s one of the most overrated producers in the history of recorded music. I don’t care what anyone thinks.
Yes, absolutely… because it remains untouched by Steve Albini’s overrated production. I still often dream of Surferosa being produced by Gil Norton. I don’t give a single squirt of precious urine how many times his name was checked by the grunge cognoscenti, Albini was nothing special and I’ll never understand the appeal.
