I feel fortunate that I was able to ride this thing! As for the next IP lets go ahead and throw in Miss Piggy and the Muppets in their version of the great movie ride!!!
Indeed, you should feel lucky! That's really cool!! Even if an attraction is bad, things like this are generally experiences worth remembering!! I never got to ride this myself, sadly, but I was fortunate enough to go on The ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter when I was a kid, which was awesome and I miss it! If you remember, I'm very curious what your overall experience with California Adventure 1.0 was!! :)
Super jealous! I'm a little surprised they didn't go ahead with the muppets version in the first place, but I do feel like Monsters Inc has a little more staying power 🤷♂️ Thank you so much for watching as always 🙏
Thank you so so much! I've been loving making these history videos, but might have to get back to the vlog style for a couple videos coming up to cover some VERY timely stuff at Universal 👀 Thank you for watching and coming along on this ride 🙏
Oh my god. I went on the version in Florida and it felt SO UNCANNY. I had no idea I why the art felt familiar. I went to DCA in 2002 and I completely forgot about it until now 😂 this video unlocked my memory
Excellent video as always Ryan. I love the passion you have for thr parks and the incredible effort you put into each video. Thank you for an entertaining watch!
My last visit to California Adventure was in 2001. I don't remember much about Superstar Limo, aside from finding it weird, haha. For the park itself, me and my whole family actually liked it for the most part.
Obviously, the Genie was in the Bel-Air portion because Disney knew nearly two decades in advance that they were going to cast Will Smith as the character in their live-action remake, and wanted to stack the references on top of each other. Sadly, the clairvoyants that made those predictions all died out to the silent menace of gingivitis. Tragic, really.
Whoopie is at the end, because not only she's worked on Disney projects like TLK, but also Touchstone (Sister Act). She's the first black woman to become an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony winner). So out of all the celebrities who appear as AAs she is the technically the most accomplished and therefore the biggest "superstar". Also, if they done this ride much sooner and around the time they originally had the idea, Whoopie definitely would've been a "superstar", as she had a lot of hits in the early-mid 90s.
I'm from the UK and have vistee wdw a bunch but was lucky enough to visit Disneyland back in September of 2001. I was only 6 but still remember riding superstar. It broke down so much and was awful but as a major Disney fan now I'm so happy I got to do the shortest open Disney ride. Even if it was awful 😅
They should’ve went back to the no doubt idea for the coaster after the princess diana news. Would’ve been cool to have our own version of the Aerosmith coaster in Orlando
Great video with quite the history! Watched this earlier today on TV and almost forgot to comment. I've never been to Disneyland so not sure I'm qualified to give an opinion- I think Monsters Inc is a relevant current IP and based on what's coming to DL I'd say - level the current attraction & replace with another Monsters Inc attraction!
You are for sure qualified! I would agree! Even 20+ years after the first movie, it is still a classic! And I'd love to see it! Thank you so much for watching 🙏
Great video, Ryan! My family was thinking of you as we were near your old stomping grounds the other day. Have you ever visited Mitsuwa Marketplace in Arlington Heights?
I've been to Arlington Heights quite a bit, but never to Mitsuwa Marketplace! I'll have to check it out next time I'm back in town! Thank you so much as always for watching 🙏
I would have made the ride about all of the various characters from Disney's animation Cannon going about their celebrity lifestyles throughout the various iconic locations within the Hollywood and Los Angeles area as if they were actors and actresses. So for example, Cinderella would be walking out of a shoe store with a ton of boxes. The three caballeros would it be dressed up like The Beach boys and Carrie Ariel on top of a surfboard. Hercules would be dressed up in a typical 90s workout outfit over at muscle Beach showing off his muscles. It would be equal parts parody and in character humor.
As the show producer for SSL I tell you that Swift y tells you no tattoos no pool parties and no shopping binges. All of which the driver thrashed you to
Had no idea this ride existed! But yeah definitely looked creepy and like a big let down. Would’ve been cute with Muppets. But happy Monsters Inc replaced it, it’s a cute ride! Great informative video, thanks Ryan 😊
I remember the old old California sign in front ah great times.. and also the rides were definitely different like the Orange stinger where now stand the Silly Symphony Swings are the old California screamin (true story got stuck on before they changed it to the incredibles coaster), old Mickey Funwheel with the sun and their was a bunch more!
My family and I went opening day and there were no trees (tiny trees) or shade. It was hot as hell. None of us understood why the hell did they build a California theme park in California we just thought that was the funniest thing.
I might be of the minority but I think the Monster's Inc ride is perfect and grows better with age. Especially since Pixar Pier has transformed the entire area to commemorate other films, it fits right in. I grew up going to Disneyland and my family would always rely on Its A Small World in the main park and Monsters in the second for a break in the nice air conditioning 🤭
Missing all the videos at the park of late. Since you always have an entertaining day at the parks. Surprised we haven’t seen one of what you think of Not So Scary Halloween this year 😂. Since I am actually going this year. Skipped last year.
I’ve really been trying to focus on these history based videos as of late, but.. I’ve got two regular(ish) vlogs coming up next week from the parks. Not from Not so Scary, but another Halloween party 👀
I actually rode on Monsters Inc: Mike and Sully to the rescue LONG before I knew the history behind it Now knowing what it used to be, I can’t see those CDA agents the same way again (I still love Monsters Inc though)
hahah I have actually been toying with the idea of doing a Soap Opera Bistro video deep dive, but I know for a fact that the video wouldn't be a draw whatsoever hahaha we'll see 🤷♂️ Thank you so much as always for watching 🙏
Pretty sure I saw superstar limo regis peer around the bedroom door fanning me with cash last night while I drifted off to sleep 😂 Thank you so much as always for watching 🙏
Honestly they can still develop their original idea for a limousine inspired roller coaster. Disney World has Rockin Roller Coaster featuring Aerosmith, so they can do something similar here in California. My suggestion? Rockin Roller Coaster: A Tribute to Prince. They can get permission to use some of Prince’s hits to celebrate his legacy in music. Create an all new storyline for the attraction. I think it’ll work tremendously! 🎸🎼🎶🎼🎵🎼🎶🎵
If they are going to expand the Avengers Campus, I have an idea for an attraction.... something that will tie an Avenger to a missed classic ride.... Ant-Man and Adventure Through Inner Space...
I was there in 2001 riding this SUPER CREEPY ride!! Yes, it was awful, yes it was creepy! However, since I grew up in the 80’s I can tell you that Melanie Griffith, and Antonio Banderas, and Cindy Crawford, and yes, even Whoopi were HUGE celebrities. Not making excuses for the creepiest ride, but they WERE huge stars! 😀🤷🏼♂️. But the whole thing was just beyond awful, and HOPEFULLY soon they’ll rip out most of the Hollywood area and redevelop that side of the park!! ……and isn’t “muscle beach” Venice beach, NOT Malibu?! 🤷🏼♂️😂😎. Great video!!
Oh, no denying that they were huge stars, I was trying to elude to the fact that if the ride had stayed more than 11 months, it would be outdated almost instantly haha and with Disney's track record with Tomorrowland, it wouldn't see an update for 20+ years 😂 Thank you so much for watching 🙏
Great Video, but like most misconceptions that everyone has stuck with over the years with some of it is actually false. 😅 I've talked to multiple sources for over 4 years that worked on the ride during it's creation and the one thing the media get's wrong is the fact that Diana's death was the leading cause to eliminating the high speed aspect of the ride. By the time of Diana's death the ride was pretty much set in stone and the only real update to the ride was the video screen in the vehicles and the ending audio. The statement you made about the "budget cuts" that lead to it not being as great isn't entirely correct because it was infact already given a very low budget to begin with and was actually on budget for it's creation unlike any other ride in the park at that time. During it's creation similarly to what you said as it being like Mr. Toad's is correct, but it was the engineer's who ultimately decided to change the way the vehicle was towed along the track forcing it to have the turn radius of the haunted mansion which was not ideal for a fast pace speed hence it's slow ride. One of the other statement's you made in the video was that the actors featured in the ride were all under contract by Disney which is true. The only thing I would add to that was the fact that they did infact have many other celebrities deteremined for the ride as well as artwork of them, but it was the fact that Disney offered as little as a "silver pass" to the park as payment for being featured on the ride. All in all I just thought I'd input some of the facts that I'ved obtain through multiple sources who worked on the ride. Because it is in fact one of my favorite rides I've researched for fun & that I collect. Hope this comment is enlighting on the subject of one of the shortest lived attractions produced by disney.
I was among the few that rode this piece of crap. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Disney fan, but DCA was IMO, a bunch of gift shops surrounded by a theme park. When I was riding "Superstar Limo" along with my friend, we could not believe what was unfolding around us.
Now about that section of the video. i want to see Carrie Underwood in the newer Superstar limo because well she sang the Ending song from Enchanted, Ever Ever After.
It might be a long shot, but if the new Pandora area is built elsewhere in the park, I think I could see Hollywood Land transform into the world of the animated television series that most of you and most Disney fans have never heard of.., The Owl House
The ride sucked, for sure, but at least it was an original creation I guess. I miss the days of original Disney rides, Disney is incapable of making anything now that isn’t IP-based. I enjoyed that aspect of it, I loved the weird puppets and the movie set part.
Regis philbin Tim Allen Whoopi Goldberg Drew Carey am I the only person who’d mildly enjoy this ride I love those guys and I l loved the millionaire cd rom game too
I mean it was bad, real bad, but I don't know if it 's the "worst ride ever" perhaps for a Disney park sure, although I'd have to think about that. The entire ride screamed cheap and rushed, and it goes further because Monsters Inc is quite literally the same exact ride with difference show scenes, nothing else different happens with the ride mechanisms and it's a decent enough ride (I still don't feel like it's really "good"), but you could quite honestly say the entire park felt rushed at the beginning, that or some really overpaid who have the position where creative geniuses need to be, the vast majority of rides felt like ride you'd see at any old amusement park, and there really was no creativity there. As for what goes in that place, well it seems California has been slowly removed from Disney CALIFORNIA Adventure, yes Soarin, Grizzly River, and the Redwood trail still exist but neither of those rides really says "California", the whole Hollywood backlot area though... yeah that can go. Based on what we've been told will go into DCA, I think the area is a good place to stuff Avatar, like if they level the Hyperion theater of course, but still keep Monsters Inc. I really don't want to see any expansion of Avengers Campus, last thing we need is more brutal modernist concrete architecture with very little to do except spend more money, and I'm sorry but Deadpool does not belong in the park, love the movies, love the character, but it is just too wrong for Disney parks.
Based on the concept art Avatar is not going in Hollywoodland. First is the total lack of Monorail. But if you look in the lower right of the art you will see the entrance to this new land. It is a very large covered tunnel. The type that you would use to disguise the fact that you are crossing the street to a current parking lot that was just approved for park expansion using Avatar as one of its selling points.
Yeah, I kinda threw that in there as a bit of a safety net regardless of where it ends up😅 Just trying to cover my bases before they inevitably announce where it'll be, which with my luck will probably be days from now. 😆 Thank you so much for watching 🙏
I mean, if they are gonna murder my Muppets courtyard at Hollywood Studios, lets put the Muppets in California Adventure. But on a real note, let's just put the Drew Carey Anamatronic back to the way it was and make it into a price is right ride. Can you just imagine what Plinko would be like or Cliff Hangers!? Dude the attraction just wrote itself. Just buy CBS, Disney.
Muppets back at DCA NEEDS to happen! A price is right ride would be crazy and I would not be against it 👀 Disney will probably own every tv station in the next 10 years anyway 😂 Thank you so much for watching man! It was great meeting you last weekend 🙏
This ride looked and sounded awful, but as soon as you said Whoopi Goldberg I literally threw my hands in the air and praised God this abomination and any reference to the scourge that is the View no longer exists
Mr Morrow is one of the world's nicest people--Would love to see him brightening up a ride at Disney. With Chris Provost to be positive and spread good vibes.
@@ForTheLoveOfThemeParksVlogs Yeah, both of those guys are so friendly and gracious. Nice to see these days. It's really interesting to see the incredible amount of new plans--although I'm sad to see some things go, it looks overall like changes for the better. Just hope it's full on Disney imagineering and care rather than the "Good Enough" attitude that seems to be plaguing the parks since Chapek. Would love to see Disney World drop some incredible new attractions at Fantasy Springs level... My Japanese is really rusty and that flight is EXPENSIVE.
No, Superstar Limo actually worked and didn’t sacrifice anything prior. Bayou Adventure is much worse and replaced their best attraction ever made with a disaster, conceptually and mechanically.
I actually rode on Monsters Inc: Mike and Sully to the rescue LONG before I knew the history behind it Now knowing what it used to be, I can’t see those CDA agents the same way again (I still love Monsters Inc though)

they almost rethemed to the muppets???? we were robbed 😭😭😭

This is also the kind of ride that would have to be updated constantly since some of the celebs either arent as popular/well known now or passed away.
Disney scrapped ideas are almost always the best choices. West cot, a no doubt roller coaster. Disney just go with your gut
Golden Dreams was amazing and features a song by Heather Headly. Califia saying “Ma’am… you forgot your bag” lives in my head rent free.
Love these videos and then I see a cameo from TDRexplorer?!? Omg fabulous!!

Right now, rumors are suggesting that all of Hollywood Land is going to be replaced by the all-new Avatar Land that's coming in several years.
No Doubt is my favorite band so I really wish we had Rock N Roller Coaster Starring No Doubt in California 🥺

A price is right ride would be crazy and I would not be against it 👀 Disney will probably own every tv station in the next 10 years anyway 😂
Thank you so much for watching man! It was great meeting you last weekend 🙏
This ride looked and sounded awful, but as soon as you said Whoopi Goldberg I literally threw my hands in the air and praised God this abomination and any reference to the scourge that is the View no longer exists
Jungle Book. Make it Jungle Book.
I was there. It was awful. Rumors have it that Monsters Inc is going away for Avatar land 👎🏻
Ehh Tiana’s bayou adventure is even worse
Sorry, but saying Jackie Chan, Cher and Whoopi are not A List superstars is fucking idiotic. Whoopi is an EGOT winner ffs
MY GUY RY
I'm your Ry Guy 🫡
Thank you so much for watching 🙏
Monster Inc. isn't any better
First! 🥳🎉
Haha thank you 🙏
We would like them to rebuild The Great Movie Ride
Mr Morrow is one of the world's nicest people--Would love to see him brightening up a ride at Disney. With Chris Provost to be positive and spread good vibes.
hahaha that would be great! 😂
Thank you so much for watching 🙏
I've tried with this channel, but I can't. I can't stand the host.
I actually rode on Monsters Inc: Mike and Sully to the rescue LONG before I knew the history behind it
Now knowing what it used to be, I can’t see those CDA agents the same way again
(I still love Monsters Inc though)
