I dont think even he can comprehend it. He just has it. People who are elite level talent like this rarely understand what exactly it is that makes them so good. Its just something theyve had. I listen to a ton of prog metal pretty much on the daily, and I'm able to follow most of the structure even through 7-8 minute songs.
AAL's music continues to be the exception upon which my brain just switches off and doesn't even try to comprehend the dizzying onslaught of polymeters, polyrhythms, time signatures and metric modulations coming at you all at once - especially when the totality of it still grooves and blends together into deceptively ordinary sounding music.

Aside from his insane control and ingrained sense of time (seriously his polyrhythms and the nutty grooves are on another level) another thing I've always loved is how small the circle of wear is on his snare.
So many drums turn 80% of their snare black wit wear, but matts hit radius is so concise and controlled that it's insanely small. A great indicator of his precision that many would overlook

That's the Tama First Chair Series, domed, with no back rest. I have the hydraulic version, and it is amazing. I know a guy who claims his entire drumming career was saved with that very throne. He was suffering from severe back issues from his nightly gigs, but somehow this throne, after having tried many different ones, somehow remedied his pain. That was over ten years ago and he still gigs.

There is so much to enjoy with Gavin Harrison, Mario Duplantier and Matt Garstka living in this world concurrently. There have been some tragic, early losses lately, with Peart and Hawkins leaving us behind, but I hope these modern Masters thrive for decades to come.
